You're not crazy Conan, "monkey mind" is an actual term they use in meditation. It refers to how your thoughts jump around every which way and it feels like you can't control them. Meditation is basically about trying to calm the monkey mind.
Exactly! A lot of people get discouraged by this but it's really not a bad thing at all. Every time you realize you've lost focus, bringing yourself back to the meditation object strengthens your awareness and through doing that many times, you can become more mindful. It's like working out for your brain. Some days that monkey is A LOT harder to calm than usual, but I'd argue that those days are better for overall improvement than the effortless ones!
Vapasana Meditation is- Focus on your breath- Wherever you feel it the most (Chest, Stomach, Throat, Nose). If a thought comes up- Gently come back to the breath. Don't beat yourself up. Just focus on your breathing. Practice, Practice, Practice. Always coming back to the breath. The mind will eventually calm down and sharpen. Meditation is just focusing on 1 thing.
What is meditation? Awareness of just awareness… The essence of being alive. A stage with no actors/object/ideas/words…just awareness. Instead of having thoughts for its pleasure, awareness’s pleasure comes from going deeper, there is “something to do” or let happen, it’s a dive into deeper levels.
Watching Conan listen to Kumail describe meditating and touching the table reminded me of Conan yelling at Jordan in Italy about touching the wall! "This guy is perving out touching a wall!"
I understood your reference Conan, you're not 'crazy'! In meditation we use monkey mind as an analogy for an unfocused usually anxious mind, and Conan just took it up a 1000 notches to 1000 monkeys in his head 😂And the discussion about mindful eating haha so funny! I LOVE Kumail's example of touching the table as a way to ground himself back to the present moment. Damn But it's actually REALLY hard focusing on 'nothing' during meditation because what even is that; seems almost unimaginable. The best meditation is to focus on your breath, easiest thing to hone in on at any time, focusing on how the breath moves the body, through the nose, how the chest/shoulders rise and fall, etc. I had to use guided meditation in the beginning to get used to it because I used to be an anxious mess. It becomes much easier over time (with LOTS of practice). Good luck to anyone trying meditation and/or mindfulness! You got this!
Conan: look up Dzogchen meditation. You just haven’t had a good teacher try different styles. Anyone can meditate! It may be different for you but advanced meditators will know how to manage it. My friend had schizophrenia and he manages it with meditation but he hired a full time Buddhist to help him!
I'm the same way..I'm an entertainer so being in that moment I'm totally ok..its when I'm not w/ others ..when I'm not entertaining is when I'm not ok!
Meditation: get comfortable. Then start thinking about your toes, try to feel them without moving them or touching them. Locate them and feel them. One by one, each toe. Then move to the foot, the bottom of the feet, the top of the feet, then ankle. Try to locate them in your head and feel them. Before you get to knees, you are "in it".
As someone with somewhat severe ADHD, I can totally relate to Conan (minus the murdering everyone part 😅). There is always chaos happening in my mind, never a quiet moment for me to collect myself or think a single linear thought. The *one* time I successfully meditated-almost exactly one year ago from writing this-I literally cried because that was my first time, possibly ever, experiencing what a quiet mind is like. I was so excited, amazed, and shocked that I had to tell a friend about it immediately, I didn’t know what else to do 😂. I’ve never been able to replicate it since then, despite even practicing the same meditation technique, which doesn’t really help with the depression part. So when Conan is making these jokes using metaphors, I genuinely understood exactly what he was saying. And when he basically said, in a defeated tone, “no one here understands me, I apologize,” my heart sank. I get that he’s still joking a bit, but that’s exactly how it is. You exhibit ADHD symptoms or try to explain the chaos, then you read the room, then apologize for even saying anything.
Chris S. I did not the chaos in my mind when I was young Yet had the hyperfocus and creativity, there was no understanding of inattentive attention deficit in the Northeast (Connecticut and New York State) in Schools, just medication of children exhibiting hyperactivity. I am so sorry you cannot find Peace now in your mind yet have seen much Respect on the Internet from Practicing M.D.s on the subject. I really Hope you get the help you need because now in my 50's I can relate to the Distracted Mind. Bless You x
Notice how everyone in the room with him still answered his question, while continuing with the humor and laughs but still giving him their love and support, though. It certainly can feel that way sometimes; but giving voice to things, as best we can, in the moments that we feel safe in/are right to...can be an incredibly relieving and emotionally uplifting experience. Besides, people apologize for things that they shouldn't be apologizing for all the time! 😄
Conan, try adopting a mantra to calm those unruly monkeys. I also gaze at a candle flame whilst repeating my mantra until I’m no longer in my body. It’s a trick to get there quicker. Much love from Long Beach. 💜💜💜
There's lots of ways. Running helps me. With or without music. I usually do zero music though And there's Self Inquiry. It's basically ask yourself "to whom do my thoughts occur?" Obviously the answer is "to me" So then think really deeply on what that me is. It observes your mind, so at the ground level, it has to be separate from your mind. (Anything to do with thoughts, feeling etc I classify as Mind). Basic logic says the observer and the observed have to be separate from each other But then you'll realize that you are "pure awareness" and then if you think about it you'll realize that since that "pure awareness" doesn't have any qualities, that means it's exactly the same for all of us. So even though it sounds super annoying and new agey, we literally are all "one"
The main reason people feel like this is because there’s something missing in their lives!…. U can deny it all u want but once u bring God into your life that solves everything…. Depression/anxiety all of it will go away instantly and u feel at ease… this is because we all have a natural tendency to want to believe in a higher power!
Kumail Nanjiani was going to Pixar Animation Studio, Kumail Nanjiani wants to perform Fantastic Beasts and Kumail Nanjiani is gonna be in PAW Patrol: The Mighty Movie.
(mostly copied from a comment thread for better visibility) More often than not, this "I cannot meditate" talk is the result of unrealistic expectations. The biggest mistake people make is thinking that meditation is about "achieving zen" or nirvana, being instantly totally relaxed and in the moment, not a thought in their mind, and if that doesn't happen, then they must be doing it wrong. NO. Your mind generates thoughts, that's just what it does. That is its job, just like your heart's job is to pump blood through your body to get oxygen and nutrients to all the cells. Your mind will NEVER stop doing that. Meditation is not about "stopping your mind", as that is an impossible task, it is about NOTICING what's happening in the present, including thoughts, as it occurs. Not just thinking and being absorped by the thoughts, but WITNESSING what is going on as it happens from a calm, neutral, and non-judgmental place. To even be able to get to that place, you need something like the breath as an anchor to come back to once you realize that you've been distracted. So your ONE AND ONLY JOB in a focus meditation (awareness meditation is likely not going to be a worthwhile approach for a beginner) is to bring your attention back to your object of meditation (e.g. the breath) once you notice you've lost focus. That's it. It's not about trying to silence your mind, it's not about *trying* to relax or get anywhere other than where you currently are. If you make meditation into a means to an end to achieve some goal that is in the future (even if that future is just a few minutes or seconds from now), like silencing your mind, relaxing, getting to any kind of altered state, you've already lost the plot, because to desperately want to get to the future is to live in non-acceptance of the present. Also, there is a learning curve to meditation as there is a learning curve to every other skill. You have to allow yourself to completely suck at first and keep at it. I mean, you wouldn't expect to be able to play a Beethoven piano sonata after practicing for a total of 90 mins either, right? Or get your black belt after training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for four weeks? So why do we expect to sit down and instantly turn into Buddhist monks? In that vein, starting small is also good advice. Meditating for 5 or even 2 minutes every day is way better than attempting to do 20 mins once and then not meditating for another 6 months. Once you have established the habit, you can then increase your time.
@@morrownow totally. Breathing and visual meditations are the most common, but that is only one piece of the mindfulness pie, and different minds need different kinds of mindfulness practices. Conan could probably find something aside from comedy to get that mindful recovery time.
Yes! I love walking meditations personally, and there are lots to listen to. A good free app to begin with is Mindfulness Coach by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
5:42..." thinking " Meditation is whenever your thinking about something other than your thoughts. Activities bring a meditative state. It could be anything, people who use machines will experience it along with becoming a cyborg (union between man and machine).
I added up the run times of all the Kumail video clips, they total 49 and a half minutes. The complete episode is just 1 hour and 2 minutes, which is about enough to fit a 50-minute interview along with the usual Matt and Sona stuff. So if they've already uploaded seemingly all the video footage anyway, WHY CAN'T THEY JUST RELEASE THE COMPLETE INTERVIEW ON VIDEO? What harm would be done by that?
Whenever people talk about "being present" and the way their degree of consciousness dictates their interaction with the world, I wish they would use Heideggerian terminology, just because it would help paint a really precise definition of what they mean. As such, the conversation presumes a high degree of shared understanding that I don't think innately exists. There's an untapped conversation here in regards to the modalities of Dasein and the interplay comedy has between states like _present-at-hand_ and _ready-at-hand,_ because the fundamental ontology of comedy is probably the most fruitful social domain there is because comedy is practically pure etymology.
