Y'all missed baking soda and water paste - what my Grams used to stop itching.
Camphor oil (or go grab some leaves off the tree)
My sis swears Aloe fixes everything (she'd freeze some - i think the cold worked more), Dad thought Vick's vapor rub fixed everything, my kid sister liked pink so voted for Calamine lotion, and mom and Pawpaw preferred Iodine, one aunt thought Mercurochrome was best ( I don't think that is even sold these days), and the other for some odd reason thought making an X with a nail on the bite helped, hubby prefers the rubbing alcohol.
I forget what is in tobacco that is supposed to stop itching, or relieve a sting from a wasp, but a wet cigarette is at least contained in the paper.
A wet tea bag - Not just for skeeter bites. I was told by a swimmer it also helps jellyfish stings and then a scuba diver told me unseasoned meat tenderizer in a paste works better.
Everyone has their preferred thing to stop an itch.
Me? I prefer not to be bitten, so use OFF :)

The best, easiest and most available mosquito bite remedy is the 'fingernail cross.'
Using the fingernail that most easily reaches the itching bite, press straight down into the bite with the sharp edge of the nail for 2 or 3 seconds. Yes, it smarts a bit. Pick up your finger and rotate it crosswise to the mark you made and do it again. Then leave that bite alone and it quits itching in 10 seconds.

I've never heard of a frozen spoon, but I have heard of putting a spoon you just stuck into boiling water on bites, and my friend's mom uses really hot teabags(it works for her but it doesn't work for my friend, so it might be different for everyone) Also, Nail polish is a good remedy for chiggers, since they burrow into your skin and it suffocates them.

Best home remedy for bites of most all types of insects goes as follows. Mix up a small spoon full of Vicks vapor rub with as much sea salt as it will take. Store in an air tight container. Dab on bite using a cotton swab. The Vicks is an analgesic to kill the itch and any pain, while the salt dries up the bite, drawing out any poisons as well in the case of a wasp sting for instance. Put a bandaid over the treated bite to help keep the salt solution in place. Re-apply as needed, every few hours.

Green mouthwash (mint) works for chigger bites, not sure about mosquitos. It will take the itch away from a chigger bite for about 6-8 hours, so it has to be reapplied, but it does help immensely. Way better than the pink lotion my mother used to use.

*I can say this from personal experience - spider bites tend to itch much longer than mosquito bites and the clear nail polish cuts way down on the long term itch. Clearasil works a lot of the time too, Have not tried toothpaste yet, but will.*

    1. Timely and relevant for us mosquito magnets; I'll be carrying toothpaste in my bag from now on. 2. Next you should try homemade mosquito bite preventatives; I'll nominate Red Devil Lye Soap (homemade). Little lady at church gave me a bar before my second year as a camp counselor, and it worked amazingly well.

Yes! Wintergreen alchohol! It works wonders for mosquito bites! Apply the wintergreen alcohol several times a day for a day or two and the bites will not itch. Bonus, it isn't messy. Regular alcohol will not work as well, only the wintergreen alcohol works.

vinegar, most biting insects excrete an alcaline to stop blood coagulation, vinegar is acidic which neutralises alcaline soothes itch and helps heal bite. also works for flea bites. its my personal go to, also tends to repel wasps and bees.

I use a spoon run under hot water. Kinda hurts a little, but the heat destroys the proteins that make us itch, therefore, no more itch. Or at least less itch.

I've grown up using toothpaste. Best way to not have the mess is to keep those small round bandaid on hand. A dot of toothpaste and one of those and you're set to go. It keeps the toothpaste on longer for maximum relief without the mess. And a hot spoon is the right trick. The heat breaks down the stuff the mosquitos leave behind that you body is reacting to. However, it hurts like hell because of the temp it needs to be...so I don't recommend it.

I learned the tobacco trick as a kid. I got stung by a yellow jacket during my soccer game. One of the dad's on the sideline grabbed my arm, pulled a dip out of his mouth and rubbed it on. The pain was gone immediately. You may think it's gross but it works.

  • @ArgentAbendAzure

I think heat will really reduce the itching. It's supposed to do something to the substances the mosquito injects.
Hold a coffee cup with hot water against the bite for awhile. Obviously don't burn yourself.
I've done this, and it feels like it itches less.

    • @RyanWaldroop
      @RyanWaldroop 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Came here looking for ammonia. Best to use it immediately after being bit. It neutralizes the pH of pretty much anything that bites or stings and then the bite won't be as bad afterwards. Good for spider bites, mosquitoes, fire ants, and wasp/bee/yellow jacket stings.

Ammonia works well for itchy bug bites. Then you apply the clear nail polish. That way you will be able to scratch it, if it itches without disturbing (hopefully) the bite.

If you use the rubbing alcohol as soon as you get bit (like when you come in from yard work) the bites won't even form, they'll stop itching before they even START. This is important for me as I'm so allergic, the bites can last for over a MONTH.

I've found that bruised tobacco is better for bee stings than mosquito bites. Every time I got stung as a kid, I'd swell up like a mofo unless Mama could get tobacco on it pretty fast, lol. Course as I've gotten older, I've learned that charcoal is better for drawing out venom from mosquito bites, bee stings, and spider bites than tobacco (especially since I don't keep tobacco in the house anymore), so I use a coal tar based dandruff shampoo on bites and stings now and it works like a charm.
