    I procrastinate all the time in replying to messages... For some reason I just get SO overwhelmed, i just feel like crying... Then i let it to later... But that's true the price only gets higher...
    I've lost many people because of that... And i just feel worse every time i do it.
    Some people kinda "accepted" it (but i see our relationship getting more strangered anyway) but i cannot accept it and when i do accept it, it feels like what I'm doing is wrong... So i immediately stop accepting, and just hate myself.
    I never understood why i do that, i do understand a little (low self-esteem and intense fear of rejection, also "i need to wait a little because otherwise i will just be bothering them", "if i talk right now that I'm feeling overwhelmed, i will just be too dry and people will hate me, with reason! So i should wait until I'm better" so i wait and in no time I'm in my endless loop of "i suck, i suck, i suck, I'm ghosting them, now too much time has passed and they're pissed"), but why i keep doing it and why my mind just panic in a horrible way when i try to do it... I never understood this part... And idk how to stop being like that.

    Procrastination is a curse and a blessing, you really gotta utilize it and procrastinate when needed. Sometimes the best decisions are not made right in this moment, but rather maybe tomorrow if you have actually thought about it and maybe had a few things happen to you on the way that pushed you into the right direction.

    • @babybirdhome
      @babybirdhome 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      That’s not procrastination, then. If you’re spending a day actually thinking about it, you’re not procrastinating, you’re just doing more work before making the decision. Procrastinating would be completely ignoring it as if it didn’t exist or need to be done at all until later.
      On the other hand, if all you’re doing is thinking about thinking about it, then you’re procrastinating because you’re not thinking about it, because that’s work. You’re just wasting time and pretending that thinking about thinking about it is work - which it _is_ an expenditure of time and effort, however, it isn’t _accomplishing_ anything, so then that is procrastination, which is what a lot of procrastinators actually do. I’ve been there. I’ve spent way too many hours thinking about thinking about something so that I feel like I’m not procrastinating, but I am procrastinating when I’m doing that, because actually thinking about it is work and takes mental and psychological effort and consumes valuable resources that procrastinating by thinking about thinking about it doesn’t.

      It kinda blends together. Procrastinating, indecisiveness, dwelling. Just not having enough info or time enough to make a decision, but asking yourself, when is my decision good enough to act on, whether I should, verses the time and effort I've already sunk not acting yet. Sometimes you're better off just trying things to see what works best, but you don't always have that option either. If there's no urgency, I often fail to act, bc I'd rather have the time to make up my mind, and think things through. When pressed, you just have to do what you think is best in that moment.

    • @ChazzItUp6714
      @ChazzItUp6714 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dankline9162 Ay I appreciate the explanation, was really lacking the words for this plus I was kinda pissed.
      But yeah, your explanation is pretty spot on, procrastinating doesn't necessarily mean that you just suddenly stop thinking, that's more of a ADHD symptom. Psychology in general doesn't really have boundaries like that as certain aspects, symptoms, feelings and behaviours start to blend all together at some point. Procrastinating itself for example can be just a symptom of 20 other possible things that happened in your life that could've caused that

    Waiting can be very expensive. I put off paying a traffic ticket. My license was suspended, and now I need to pay a cost to reinstate it and for the ticket. Also, now I'm riddled with shame for losing my license, so I'll have to battle those negative emotions to go pay up.
    I'm frequently reminding myself of how embarrassed I will be if I get caught driving without a license. It's not actually helping, but I'll put on my big girl panties and go pay today.

  • @bigman7856
    @bigman7856 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +46

    It’s not good that I procrastinate, but that’s how my brain manages to get things done well. I’ve put in the work to do things the “proper way” on many occasions. It all ends poorly. The issue is that this runs contrary to the way most others work. I do a lot of things including art as a hobby. I used to do commissions with a loose schedule. This ended in the project being drawn out indefinitely. Now I ask for a strict deadline from clients. Not only do I produce a superior product, but it’s done quickly. Idk why this is the case, but I’m sure others experience similar situations. Though don’t get it twisted, there are still many situations where procrastination absolutely screws me. It’s a part of my ADHD and I can see the pros and cons.

    • @Deathraze1
      @Deathraze1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +12

      To me this sounds like the opposite point you seem to be making. If I didn’t misunderstand, you seem to be pointing towards procrastination helping you. While to me the act of setting deadlines helps you procrastinate less. Which in turn is showing you superior results. Doesn’t this point to procrastination making things harder? And in turn not procrastinating making things easier? This seems to all be in support of everything Dr. K said in this clip.

    • @bigman7856
      @bigman7856 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@Deathraze1 ideally I wouldn’t procrastinate. It’s just something that I’ve dealt with for my entire life, so in turn I’ve basically forced strict deadlines. Not a good thing, that’s just how I’ve had to counter or prevent the bad effects of procrastination in my professional life.

      I feel for you. Like faucez99 mentioned, play some music and focus on one box at a time. Your approach can also depend on your organization style. Do you categorize items by the room or by their purpose? You can prioritize boxes based on which is more important or which is easier. I'm not sure of your progress since it's been awhile, but best of luck either way. A little bit goes a long ways.

    It will always be much worse and far more work. Perfect examples for me are dishes, laundry, trash, paperwork (notes, mail, scheduling, and so on), and so on. Just do it; future you will thank you for taking that amount of work off of their back so that they can use their time for more fulfilling things (play is as important as work- in order to refresh) after completing the small amount of work they had to put in the next day. Chronic burn out, depression, being unmotivated, just being tired, procrastination, and distractions are all common problems for myself, but it's still ideal to take little steps towards completing tasks so that it's not so overwhelming later when you need to catch up. "A little bit is better than nothing", has been a helpful motto when I don't have the energy for upkeeping the various daily tasks. Most of the time, motivation kicks in for me after seeing results which will cause me to want to keep going to see the complete end result. Sometimes you do need to rest; my point is that it's also important to not make things harder on yourself later. If distractions play any role in the procrastination, you could try waiting until after a task is done to experience after as a limited or timed treat/ reward. Timed tasks can also help, such as the Pomodoro method. I hope that helps someone, cuz it's been a tiring, long-time struggle and I just thought I'd share on the topic based on experience.

    But when the cost increases so does the feeling of reward or accomplishment when I do it, and so does the excuse if l fail.
    Example: in college I left almost all of my studying until finals week. I did very well. I told myself “I’m pretty smart, did great, let’s celebrate.”
    Plus there was an increased rush when the deadline got nearer. I was able to focus, got in a zone and a flow that was highly enjoyable.
    In grad school I did the same. Did well but far less well. One class I did pretty poorly in, though. But I had an excuse - I wasn’t dumb, I just didn’t study enough.
    Years later I have to consciously avoid that practice. But it’s still a natural inclination.
    @BrotherShaw has a comment below that’s fantastic. Give your future self a reason to thank you, not be pissed off at you.

    Keep in mind that this is not true for all problems tho. A lot of things don't escalate if you don't do them immediately. With those types of problems, they're often not even problems to begin with, and you're sometimes better off to ignore them on purpose.
    If something is only a mild inconvenience, and doing nothing about it doesn't make it worse, chances are you will eventually get used to that inconvenience and you successfully procrastinated the problem away. And by having one less problem, you will have more energy to focus on the actual problems.
    So learn how to evaluate problems better, discard the unnecessary ones and you will have a much better time dealing with the actual ones.

    It might not be a miscalculation, it could be just another shortcut, the paradox of taking the road of least suffering... That is until you run out of "time".

    I procrastinate for lots of reason. Lack of details is big one. I need to know. I also have X spoons in day and sometime I just don't have the spoons to do it when I planned. A little annoying because something unexpected took the spoons I allocated to doing something. But if it's special interest no cost and I never procrastinate with that.

    Not always true though, buying something from supermarket for example, if you procrastinate, you will eventually find more things to buy tomorrow and save time by only going once instead of twice.

      Yes more motivation to complete a task that is now harder. For me the fact I recognize the task is getting harder is what increases my motivation.
      So if I could just recognize that today instead of tomorrow.

      For me, it's not increasing the motivation. It's just the things if I have to do, I just do and If I can't, I do tomorow. I am never proscinating, just chilling today and do tomorrow tasks, for tomorrow problems 🤣 I just don't think about it today, when there is tomorrow to do so.
      For example, I have to do dishes, forget about it, there is always a tomorrow, if I can't do them today. 🤣
      But... I actually do those things, because it's the day when I do already something and then when I chill, I just chill if I remember something that I forgot to do so,I ain't even doing it.
