    Most of the 4x4 products are made in China if not Australian. Like it or not, that’s the reality. This afternoon I used my Chinese made air compressor to inflate my Chinese made AT tyres. I also used my Chinese made recovery tracks to get my GWM ute out of trouble. I don’t think any Aussie can live the same and live the way we love without CHINA.

    Although i disagree on some of your comments on EV's, it was a very well done review and not too biased. BYD are watching and listening to Aussie mainstream thoughts on EVs, and what this vehicle can do for the Aussie public is convince people EVs are just better, even when they are hesitant jump to full EV because of all the FUD they hear about the tech "not being ready"... It is ready but BYD knows the aussie public arent convinced yet so this is being sold as a stopgap or a "gateway drug". (Also they arent coming for your old Landcruiser they dont give a shit about your old cars on the road just new ones, they know most people are just gonna let there old cars go to landfill so they arent in a rush to kick them off the road. That being said you may wanna convert that Landy to EV one day and breathe new life into her! 😉 Check out Electric Classic Cars in the UK they have done a few 4x4 conversions.)

    BYD's PHEV technology advantage is that even if you never charge the car, only use gasoline to drive the vehicle can maintain low fuel consumption and strong power, because most of the long-term majority of users are using pure electric drive and it has the function of kinetic energy recovery, reducing the burden of the brake system, so that it has the advantages of long maintenance cycle, low maintenance costs, and low failure rate.

However, I really don't know how the batteries will hold up when submerged from a river crossing to a flood from a hurricane. I have seen too many photos or videos of EVs burning up when in contact with water, especially salt water. I really like my house. Nothing new in that regards. In fact in the past it's been even more intelligently done where the petrol engine is inline with the motor (which can be reconfigured as an alternator) and drive system. Throw in some clutches and the car can be driven direct by the petrol engine, while spinning the generator and charging the battery, or combine the petrol and electric motor for lots of torque or disengage the petrol engine and run purely electric.

    We've had a 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (100% made in Japan) for almost a year now and it has the same drive configuration as this BYD and similar range from both the battery and the petrol tank. It's absolutely fantastic. We charge it up for the week's drive to work and back using our solar and/or the cheap overnight electricity rate. The average fuel consumption is 0.8 litres per hundred kilometres. We've taken it from Newcastle to Brisbane twice. The first time we thought we'd charge-up along the way but the charging infrastructure is a joke. We couldn't get a charge anywhere so we gave up trying and just used the petrol option. Anyway, the car was still fantastic. It did everything it was supposed to and used about 6.5 Litres per hundred. My daily driver and weekend warrior is a Jeep Wrangler so I have no need to wheel the Outlander. I'd be cautious about doing any creek crossings in an EV for sure.

    As someone who lives in a major city and just has the one car for it all, the idea of being able to drive to the shops or Bunnings without using any fuel or a cold start is pretty cool. The power train is more attractive than the gadgets inside (imagine if the screen got stuck part way through its orientation) but agree the longevity will be important. For long trips where you can't do any charging and run mainly off petrol, I wonder about the round trip efficiency of generation/storage/electric motor and if it's actually worse off? I'm sure over the life of the vehicle it wouldn't really matter. With your comment on EV chargers powered by generators, I get it's ironic but realistically over the life of the vehicle (if you consider the average ev owner might be uunlucky to do 5 of them in their whole ownership and it facilitates electric travel rest of the time) it's still a huge net gain

  • @nigelhunt8275
    @nigelhunt8275 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Water in the battery is a significant concern. Although the battery might be protected against collisions, water can still cause problems over time, such as electrolysis on the metals, rust, and metal degradation, not to mention the potential for shorts and fires. In countries like Japan and China, cars are often discarded once the motors are worn in, but we tend to drive our cars much longer. Given that a motor vehicle is the second largest expense in one's life, it's crucial that these electric vehicles last beyond 10 years, as replacing them every 3 to 5 years is not a viable option.

    Hard to believe that the petrol engine will achieve that sort of efficiency when having to power a generator for a vehicle that large tbh.
    Our very efficient Korean grocery getta doesn't do much better than that at times, it weighs way less than that and is way more aerodynamic.
    I've also seen that running that sort of hybrid system is very hard on the motor and it would be very complex as well methinks.

      BYD's current production engine has a world-record thermal efficiency of 46%, The current maximum thermal efficiency of the engine used by ICE is 41% .
      BYD's PHEV uses an engine that mainly provides power to the battery, and the engine is operating in the optimal thermal efficiency range most of the time, while the ICE engine can only be in the best condition very little of the time. Therefore, BYD's engine has a very low failure rate and is very fuel efficient and low noise vibration.
