I can't blame you, Squatch, for staying away from what lubricants you will be using. I don't know why oil is such an emotional topic for so many people. I never tell anyone what oil I run in my motorcycle for the very same reason. It turns into a senseless circular arguement every time.
As a machinist in the industry fixing lots of machinery mishaps...I can testify to the addage of "any oil is better than none" quote. Seen lots of worn out parts with plugged grease ports & fresh grease on the fitting & the farmer saying..." I always grease it...not sure why it just broke.." ....

I like your take on lubricants. Your explanation reminded me of my late father. The man HATED Quaker State. Didn't matter the oil/grease. Didn't matter the application. If it had Quaker State written on it anywhere, he wasn't using it....period. I don't know what his hangup was with Quaker State, as I could never get him to tell me. Whatever it was, he was dedicated to it. Thanks for helping bring up that memory!

Seal retainer was designed when common sense was common. Today when someone uses a simple method to get great results it's should be called uncommon sense. LOL. Great progress. Happy Easter to you and your family.
The final drives are looking real good, and heavy. I’m sure you’ll have a good setup to lift them into place, otherwise there will be acorns rolling around the floor. I have really enjoyed following along on the rebuild thanks for taking me/us along.

To finalize the videos on the drive sections, can you show us some simple hand drawn diagrams of how it all works together? What I'm looking for is something showing "this turns this direction" causing "this to turn this direction" with appropriate arrows, etc. You know how all this works coming and going (like the back of your hand), but for us viewers it is a little confusing as you bolt & sandwich each housing layer together to see how it all interacts together.
Awesome video! Great explanation on those seal retainers. Everything they did had a reason, and nothing was done with out a reason. Amazes me how they were able to do feedback loops with mechanical devices, that nowadays use sensors and computers. Something to be said for the mechanical way when troubleshooting an issue. Easy to see a worn or broken metal piece. Pretty hard to tell that nowadays with out a computerized scanner. Easy to fix as well, weld a broken part or make a new one. Of course wouldn’t be doing that with the amount of torque going through those final drives, but linkages would be easy. Interesting you talking about oil. Just looking at topping up/changing the oil in the trans and finals on my D2. Looking for Cat’s recommended weight. Thinking 90, and something lighter in the trans. Have to get out the operators guide. Working on rebuilding hydraulic cylinders, leaking seals. Still trying to figure out where the oil in the bell housing is coming from. Main engine, pony engine, pinion housing or transmission. Now for the second time in a few months the pinion is kicking out at low rpm. Yesterday it kicked out every time I engaged compression, at about 1/4 throttle, diesel throttle off. Had to warm it up without compression, then open the throttle and then engage compression. Fires up fine as long as warm enough. Runs fine and shuts off fine, so I know diesel throttle is shutting off fine. Oh well another mystery to solve, or two. You and yours stay safe, and enjoy Easter weekend.
I work on farm machinery all the time and people ask me what oil to use and I always tell them what ever the owners manual calls for. Or if someone asks what do you think about this oil I rarely have a comment good or bad. Because if someone dumps oil in that I said was ok and something blows up people tend to point fingers at ya. lol, you have to love the reality in your footage.. we're not perfect human beings.. love it. keep up the beautiful work. im not rebuilding my tractors but i learn something new every time i watch your videos. with what i watched today, im guessing it would be good to maybe run your tractors down a road or somehow lift your tractor and run those final drives to get all the oil to run everywhere. running them around the house like i do is probably not enough to get the oil to run everywhere inside the final drives.
Kind of have to agree on the lubricants topic. Everyone has a different idea on what to use. I have my own view just as 10x100 other people. So in that sense I can understand leaving that topic untouched is for the best. Agree on the thing that gears get destroyed from the lack of lubrication(or sometimes water +moisture damage). That has come up in my practice as well. Cage rollers will be a fun part to see. I think some of that CAT D2 roller design is still in use today.
OMG, Squatch, whatever that pink goo you used was all wrong! It's too slippery. My grandpa's son's kid in Kansas used whatever that stuff was and his bull gears accelerated out of control even with the engine shut off! He went right off the top of the mountain. Haven't heard from him since.
your opinion of oil is the same as mine. talking about oil back in the day my grandpa told me they use to put a rope wick in a barrel of old oil and let it flow threw the wick and clean the oil so they could reuse it

@Squatch253 - I have been searching for this video all morning, "How to adjust the brakes" . I guess i will just assume there is no need to mess with the bottom centering bolt and just tighten up (adjust) the brake. I just bought a 1937 D-4, it runs good. Oh yea the clutch lever when I release it does not have a good release or spring to hold the lever released so when I release it the dozer tries to keep moving so I keep wanting to use the left brake to stop dozer not sure if I think I am trying to use it as a brake or as a clutch, so that's why I need to adjust brake. Now I need to find video on clutch lever and see what that is about. I have watched the entire series, but memory is not what it used to be.
I use a similar method for construction projects at home as your gear lube selection. I figure costs out to the penny and then double the figure and gets me close to finished costs!
That assembly lube in the little aluminum (vienna sausage?) can was gorgeous, almost looked good enough to eat. Kind of like honey or STP, very clingy and very supple. Is that stuff a trade secret or would disclosing what it is violate the non-discussion policy on gearbox lubes? I sure liked the look of it as it went on. You covered a lot of ground here. Good work!
I agree toby about the oil grades. I have seen more engines and whatnot destroyed by dirty oil or lack of oil. My personal rule for oil is use the best you can afford that you can get easily. Don't step over a dollar to pick up a penny

I’ve seen you use various potions on your builds, the one that really sticks in my mind is the Permatex Blue you favour. Would you mind doing a video on the various elixirs you use regularly?

Have you ever tried the locktite 518 or similar flange sealer? We have been using that on our tugs and works great nice thing about it is it doesn’t clog up oil passages and stuff like what can happen with RTV or silicone. When excess is used it actually dissolves in oil/fuel but when used between flanges it’s a nice seal. We personally love it and it’s all we use now
Oil Rule 1 - Some oil is better than none. Oil Rule 2 - Full oil is better than some. End of rules. 2 - Stroke observation: No motor ever died from too much oil. Many have died from too little ...
My Great Grandpa worked for Standard oil 1885-1930. His crew shoveled coal to fire the evaporation towers. (That's what they called them back then). They had to shovel the paraffin out after each batch. Gasoline was considered a waste product until 1914 and was simply dumped into the Hudson River. My grandfather worked for them too as a salesman 1918-1953. Oils were pretty crude compared to todays standards. Low speed #1 failure, lack of oil or contamination. Highspeed #1 failure, same.The salesmans job was to get you to like him more than the next salesman. Hence lots of "swag" giveaways at each visit.
You have been an inspiration to me in my Deere model B rebuild to the extent I hand made most all of my gaskets and mechanical locks but I have a question and that is if I am making a large gasket and it will need to be multiple pieces what is the best "joint" to use and where would you place them ?
I haven't read the comments, but would you use synthetic lubes (whatever brand) in most big trucks we have synthetic lubes in at least in the transmission and rear ends. Just your opinion on synthetic versus organic lubes.

Only ever used first press virgin dinosaur oil, but make absolutely sure it's first pressing.

However, I do have a question of sorts around fluids.
I’ve seen you use various potions on your builds, the one that really sticks in my mind is the Permatex Blue you favour.
Would you mind doing a video on the various elixirs you use regularly?
I find that the best lubrication of large gears like that is a handful or two of 3/4 minus gravel.

Have you ever tried the locktite 518 or similar flange sealer? We have been using that on our tugs and works great nice thing about it is it doesn’t clog up oil passages and stuff like what can happen with RTV or silicone. When excess is used it actually dissolves in oil/fuel but when used between flanges it’s a nice seal. We personally love it and it’s all we use now

The truth regarding lubrication, any is better than not enough oil or dirty oil .

My Great Grandpa worked for Standard oil 1885-1930. His crew shoveled coal to fire the evaporation towers. (That's what they called them back then). They had to shovel the paraffin out after each batch. Gasoline was considered a waste product until 1914 and was simply dumped into the Hudson River. My grandfather worked for them too as a salesman 1918-1953. Oils were pretty crude compared to todays standards. Low speed #1 failure, lack of oil or contamination. Highspeed #1 failure, same.The salesmans job was to get you to like him more than the next salesman. Hence lots of "swag" giveaways at each visit.
You have been an inspiration to me in my Deere model B rebuild to the extent I hand made most all of my gaskets and mechanical locks but I have a question and that is if I am making a large gasket and it will need to be multiple pieces what is the best "joint" to use and where would you place them ?
I haven't read the comments, but would you use synthetic lubes (whatever brand) in most big trucks we have synthetic lubes in at least in the transmission and rear ends. Just your opinion on synthetic versus organic lubes.
