There has been so much going on in the workshop this week!
…and to top it off, I think this is one of the best videos I’ve made!
The other guys aren’t back yet, so it’s just been me and Patty holding the fort. We’ve been working on sole-boards, engine drip-tray, chain locker cladding, cockpit design, diesel tank design, fitting the stern tube, painting bulkheads, varnishing cypress/oak panels, and sailing Stromboli!!
This is actually a pretty normal couple of weeks around here, but in this video I’ve tried to give a sense of all the different things happening at once, rather than focus on one specific subject.

I liked the video. More 'smaller" jobs per video is entertaining. Of course, in depth videos about the bigger and more important stuff are also very nice.

I'm nearly 57 but feel like a kid on Xmas morning opening his presents when a new video gets posted and by happy accident my timing was perfect today. Glad you have got your mojo back Leo - getting away from it all for a while & going back to the UK to see family and friends probably helped some.

As a ship desiger I work with CAD in a daily basis and I'm really impressed by Leos capability to sketch technical drawings on paper. They are pieces of art from engineers point of view.
It's mind boggling how massive a job it is to build this boat. Loving every minute here.

a lifetime of mechanical design, woodworking and photography behind me and yet I think my head would pop if I tried to be Leo for a day. I loved the video. Was it new in some way or just more of Sampson Boat Co's general awesomeness? I couldn't know but glad he felt his creative juices flowing again.
I don't know where you get the energy to work on your boat and put out videos at the same time but thank you for your time.
We've all heard the expression, "the devil's in the details", but I think this, and other things Leo has pointed out proves that the details are what ties the project together. Again Leo, good to have you back working, you were missed.
MAD skills Leo... in everything. you do, from drawing plans to creating mockups to doing detailed carpentry of the highest order. Remarkable as a fan of this channel for many years, and now a patron as well, the sense of pride I feel in what is happening here... almost as though I am part of the effort. I like this video a lot, shows how many projects you're juggling in a given week, which isn't always as obvious in your other single-project-oriented videos.

@@oinodin I've actually had a lot of boatbuilders approach about different Pi integrations they've built (or are building) into their vessels. A lot of proprietary maritime tech can cost gobs of money, but there are some open source replacements for navigation and entertainment systems especially.
Heck, some people just use a Pi and a monitor for entertainment, since that setup can sip battery and charge with solar more easily than a powerful PC or other entertainment devices.

Of the boat building channels that have finished and set sail, i've so far not watched them since they have, so... a bunch of us like the building more I think.
The 'dependancy tree' on this project is crazy. "I have time and materials to do the sole boards, but I have to get the fuel tanks designed, which ties to the deck plate, which ties to the cockpit design, which ties to the paint on the bulkheads... so I need to order the tanks, place the fittings, measure the spacing between the deck beams and after spinning those up, what was I doing? Huge respect for you.
I will never not be amazed with how you can make such complicated shapes in wood that perfectly fit the space required. Tapering and differing angles in multiple directions. Amazing!
We like this format, Leo. Dude, you have touched every part of "Tally Ho". Your DNA will forever be in that boat.
Oh he and quite a few of the people who have worked on Tally Ho have literally left the DNA in the boat. No carpentry project goes by without a little spilt blood.

I've watched your build of tally ho from the beginning and enjoyed the process truly amazing . What I've been interested in seeing is how the interior was going to happen, living quarters, galley, sleeping quarters and exterior hatches etc.. and the craftsmanship involved and the finished look of the wood choice .
No complaints from this quarter! I was impressed from the start and have continued to admire your work ethic, boatbuilding skills, personnel management, film making, all of it.....everything.

I'm sure its been said ad nauseum yet also goes without saying, but the interior is absolutely gorgeous. Awesome choices of Wood and Varnish/ finishing materials.
You know what would be nice is a tap on the oil pan to drain it into a bucket cleanly if it gets full as well as an oil tap in the oil sump of the engine. Mitch cleaner than mopping up with oily rags or pulling a bung plug.
I like how this one was edited. I think cyclically switching up/alternating styles of editing or format of presentations suits this epic project.
Love the build! Been watching for awhile. I myself know nothing about boats or building boats but absolutely love watching the thoroughness and craftsmanship. It is truly wonderful to watch. My 4 yo and 7 yo daughters love watching! Keep up the great work!
Another great video showing a huge range of skills, I was particularly impressed with the sole board cut out around the frames also incorporating the fastenings and Patrick's chain locker work, hats off to both of you.

Throw a video like this in every now and then! I personally like this kind of episodes just as much as the ones that focuses on one particular task.
I much prefer this sort of video, Leo. A mixture of this and that, rather than a focus on one thing. It would be nice to see fairly regular overviews of the whole boat.....catching up on the state of the decking, for instance.

I was quite moved by the footage of you putting the coats of varnish on the door frame. A labor of love caught on video. The choice of music for it added a lot to the scene. This was a very enjoyable video. The bits with Patrick had echoes of "Whatcha doing, Pete?" Well done and thank you.

Honestly it was nice to see an overview of all the different things happening simultaneously and get a feel for a normal week in the shop. Your hesitation to deviate too far from what has brought you success is totally understandable, but know I really look forward to the little distractions; The field trips around the boatyard, interviews with your collaborators, boat trips, and yard dog counts are always a fun treat. You got here making videos that were fun for you, keep doing that and we'll keep watching.

Great to see you back. The format of the video was fascinating. It's interesting to hear the "We're doing this, but first we gotta do that, right after we finish most of the other thing." Keep up the fantastic work. She really is an artwork.
It's always humorous watching the crew tackle the myriad of tasks . However the most pleasure I get is watch Leo ( master shipwright ) designing , templating & fabricating extremely complex objects out of wood . The shaft boring was amazing and very precision once again . Well done skipper , it's been a long road since Brookings .
I actually thought to myself: "I wonder if he has hired an editor", just because it felt a bit more playful than before. The camera movements at 6:42 very much broke the fourth wall, and hearing the radio in the background in a few shots also seemed unfamiliar. I liked it a lot!

When I watched the first video you posted on this project I couldn't believe that you would be able to do any sort of restoration of Tally Ho. Not only are you further in to the project that I ever thought you would get, but with every episode I am astounded at the quality of your workmanship and those who ae helping you. Well done Leo, Tally Ho will be a thing of beauty that will be a lasting legacy showcasing your talent.
Its not a restoration its a rebuild from the original plans.
Although entertaining and wonderful craftsmanship The original Tally Ho is gone to the burn pile, This is a copy probably built better than the original better materals and better detail, but a copy just the same, not 110 years old, no history just a copy, anyone who disagrees with me needs to take a second look, nothing but maybe a few transom boards and some of the original lead from the keel are original!

I don't consider myself a expert but on any project when 99% of a project is replaced it no longer becomes a restoration it just becomes a rebuild, anyone with a ounce of intelligence could see that.

Just a great rebuild of a great old boat built from the plans into a great new boat.
@@ghostboatsofsouthernmichig5978 Agree that this is more of a replication than a restoration but there is an issue with saying "just". There is much more work in replication - look at the knees, for example. Instead of stripping, derusting and painting, there has been a whole series of procedures to replicate them in bronze. I learned a long time ago that most people don't know the difference between original and authentic; which is a pity, as there is much more work in the latter that needs to be acclaimed. In this case Leo will end up with a brand-new version of a 100+ year old design, which will allow people to marvel at it for years to come.

adding a drain plug to that drip pan might be a good idea. this way if you have a major leak you can drain it into another seal-able container without having to remove the whole tray while its near full.

Much enjoy watching Tally Ho being reborn' i was a commercial fisherman in Alaska for 30 years and had 3 sail boats after i retired. If you aren't planning to put a drain plug in that drip pan you might consider it. Easter to get the bulk of fluids out if you have a high volume spill.

I agree. If not a drain plug, I'd put a sump area in the pan to dip a suction hose into. I'd also put a shallow "V" in the bottom of the pan to channel to the sump area..

Cockpits on wooden boats often have very straight vertical back rests and it really pays off to get some comfortable slope into the back as well as the seat so you’ll automatically slide in backwards due to the slight angle. It sits very comfortably as you slide in the back of the seat with a comfortable backward leaning resting position from which you can still steer the boat and operate winches comfortably as well. Maybe test and calculate in some dimensions for cushions that are comfortable but not to thick. You’ll be spending lots of time sitting there and there are human dimensions and angles that are industry standard for comfortable seating, it’s worth looking into (interior design as a study has lots of lists with predetermined dimensions correlating with the size of people it’s designed for, it’s really helpful to build comfortable well sized seating etc.)
I’m impressed with quality of your drawings done without T-Square, set squares and a good drawing board. Basically free hand with a steel rule only very good.

@@mobilixone1575 agreed, I'd love to be able to get a coffee table book of his project tables, notes, and sketches; along with a write up of his thoughts along the way about the project. If he kept a journal, he could write a book and include pictures or photocopies of his notes and sketches. The sales could help support the first few voyages, financially.

At 26:25 while Leo's vanishing ( I hope that's right) the boards, it dawned on me.....just how personal and enduring a wooden boat must be. There is so much time, purpose and care put into every single board on a wooden boat. It's no wonder they are so loved and appreciated by those who make and or sail them.

With regard to the drip pan for the engine, May I suggest & recommend you have the metal worker include a “return” around the top edge, to prevent any excess fluids from slopping over into the bilge. It’s amazing how these problems will happen when you are not looking, or busy on the forward deck.

I enjoyed watching all the fitting and patterning involved in boat building, since there are often few square corners in a boat. The small projects created more variety. Your problem solving skills are amazing.

Liked the video. Showing a bunch of different smaller jobs is good to get a sense of what working there is like in a week. I also enjoy the single subject videos too...I think mixing it up is the way to go! Whatever makes the most sense given what's going on that week.
Welcome back Leo, just loved the variety and complexity presented. A good flavor for those uninitiated in the complex art of project management wrt schedules etc. Plus seeing your wide spectrum of abilities to get things done should be an inspiration to young folk coming up. While coming to the end of my journey, it's so heartening to see you and your young team kicking proverbial ass and delivering a wonderful heritage project for future generations to savor.

The good thing about this video is seeing various things in the context of time.
Pouring the keel for instance was a huge step that is several videos in and of itself, but a lot of other tasks can be shown bit by bit over time.
The answer isn't to do one or the other, it's to do justice to key milestones like the keel and whisky plank, but to do a fair bit of this as well.
Regardless of what you choose to do, you'll have everyone's support. That you've taken and continue to take the time to show us is extraordinary. Thank you for that.

A great catch-up format.
With the "normal" videos there has often been a focus on one task, but seeing the number of tasks running more or less in parallel gives an impression of the scale of the project.
Hopefully in future weeks we will see the rest of the crew re-appearing (along with Pancho aka "The Boss")
btw - How did you get on in the race or were you DQ'd for not registering?
Just an idea. The drip tray should be sloped with a ball valve for changing the oil. You could drain the engine into the tray and let gravity feed it into an container at the front. Wipe down the tray when you're finished.
Hi Leo, that was a lot better than the previous half-dozen. It was much more dynamic and fun. I really enjoyed watching it. The last few haven't been so good.

I did like this style. It makes Tally Ho seem so close to being done, like you're just working on the house at this point.
I think you'd need a very large piece of paper to list the constructions still to happen.
I am no help on which formats are best. I like them all. I appreciate all the time you spend to film/edit and we get to see enough of what you are doing so we understand your process. It’s always great to see your tools, equipment, shops, and the cast of characters. I enjoy your hand drawings, too. I try to mix sketches with my CAD drawings in my shop for myself and sometimes for clients. You are more artistically skilled than me, tho.
I am a retired timber framer and have a well equipped and nice size personal shop. It’s been great for working on and winter storing my fleet of boats here. My stuff (and there is a LOT) will go somewhere in the next ten years or so. I am in northwest Montana…..maybe to a young timber framer who wants to make a go of it? Or maybe it will be a talented boatbuilder like you in Port Townsend. I am still picking away at my stock of dry salvaged fir. I still have a lot of projects.
I have not been to Port Townsend since 2014??. Work, play, and Covid impacts. It’s time to go this September. It would be great to meet you and your crew for after-work beers.
The drip tray is a good idea, but since this is a sailing vessel I suggest to make the sides higher otherwise any oil may flow out when heeled.
Also suggest to check any possible oil leaks when the engine is under extreme heel. (like accidentally drying out on the tide). The dipstick and crank vent should be led to somewhere along the centerline so all oil in the engine stays in the engine, whatever position the vessel is in. Also check the gearbox vent opening.
I learned this the hard way... I dried out, forgot about the engine, and after the tide came back and the boat afloat, found most of the oil back in the wet gear locker having escaped the engine via the dipstick
