In this episode we follow some really interesting and complex joinery on deck.
The hatch sills, built by Clifton, feature some mind-bending half-lap mitre joints and some very challenging coves.
The bulwark termination block is an unusual feature that Tally Ho was originally built with, and gets remade from some large purple heart blocks.
We also receive some beautiful new tanks which get installed in the bilge, and have a lot of fun playing with some knives.

Routing Teak wood without wearing a mask is irresponsible. Early on in this project PPE was at the forefront. Now safety seems to have taken a backseat.

As a carpenter with 15 years of experience, watching Leo start this @29:25 blind hole and ending up here @29:45 on a project with so many years in.. It makes me pucker every time, and I can't imagine how it makes him feel. Props.

These videos are always top tier, but there's something about this one that made it extra good. Idk if it's Clifton's sills, Leo's bulwark-receiver-thing, the new tanks, or just the general satisfaction of seeing several components started and finished, but this one was a banger. Felt like two videos' worth of content. Great work to the team!

That was quite the storm. I'm six or seven miles southwest of the boatyard and our power was out from 10:00PM Friday to 5:00PM Saturday! Thank goodness we have a generator.
Leo, I'm a retired welder and I have to tell you, those water tanks are a work of art. The quality that went into creating and fabricating them for you was done with amazing precision and professionalism. It fits with the wonderful quality that you and your friends have been doing to make this boat such a beautiful classic yacht.

not a welder but everything in my facility is Sanitary, and you learn real quick what a good weld is and those are fucking fantastic
I’m curious how you determined the quality of the welds when there are no closeups of the welds.

I am reminded in the 80s I had a crew of 6 guys that worked for 2 yr on a porject at Mystic Seaport. We had the best of times working together just like you guys. This is how work should be done. So much fun and to boot we accomplished alot. Thanks guys for reminding me of that time. RC

I don’t know why you would say that & I don’t particularly want to know. The product (knives) looked pretty good & I will go looking for them soon. The fact that this company basically gave Leo & his team a lot of leeway to advertise their product, & paid them well with fridge/freezer donations to boot tells me they are a ‘good’ company who supports projects such as Tally Ho, not unlike the way in which a member of my family supports local kids hockey by paying for their uniforms & kit. So please, do not “knock” those that participate in whatever manner they decide is the right thing for them to do. As ‘Shamwerks’ said, Kudos to Kamikoto. Their donations/payment is certainly appreciated. I’m sure we are all aware that Leo & crew are not professional ‘marketers’ & have no experience making a commercial but, they had a lot of fun doing it & it is certainly different from what we normally see on TV. If anything, I would think it might generate sales for Kamikoto simply because many of us use the MUTE button whenever commercials appear on TV whereas, I/we watched ALL of this amateur commercial because the guys made it funny & the fact we “know” this team.

@@rctaylor5689 I'm sure the knives are fine to use for most people, but they are not professional chef knives. Google around and you will see the complaints and marketing trickery. They are a Chinese company selling "Japanese" knives for one. The steel they use is budget stainless.
I mean I'm happy they sponsored the project, but eeeck, probably not the greatest sponsor for Leo's amazing reputation.
Leo, I can't believe what you and your crew/ community have accomplished with Tally Ho from a almost forgotten hulk to this masterpiece. I know it's far from finished but WOW. What a journey so far. Thanks to all of you. I have enjoyed every minute of it.

Those sills might just be my favorite part of Tally Ho. I know if I was living on that boat I'd appreciate them every time I walked past, they truly are masterfully crafted.
I am a mechanical engineer and like any mechanical engineer we think we can do almost anything without major problems. But when I look at how you work and what skills you need to do your job, I am left speechless. I am seriously impressed ..
I’m impressed by the skill of the crafts people involved of course but I keep thinking about the management of the project, the logistics, workflow planning, procurement etc…it must be an incredible amount of work in itself.
Is... is that a thing we think? I usually assume we'll need 3 revs to get something right.

@@shabut FWIW most of the time with consumer grade stuff, the engineers know exactly how to make the product better, but they're up against a cost limit and have to cut quality somewhere. I'm more talking about the product development side. Your first stab never works, and the second one is usually in the right direction but misses the mark. The third one is usually close enough. It's amazing to me that Leo is able to just start carving into a $1000 piece of lumber and come out with the right part without screwing it up twice on the way.
TL;DR: Blame marketing for bad products, and Leo is a very talented person.

I doubt there is a boatyard anywhere in the world with a more skilled group of craftsman than you have working on this project. Amazing to watch those random pieces of tree turned into something so beautiful.
Leo&crew are indeed perfectionists but in all fairness there are several other shipwrights also worth their weight in gold!!
Of the various sounds in this one, the sound of the sharp rabbet plane cutting the end-grain purpleheart is my absolute favorite.
Pinot Blanc, 5 string banjo by Wayward Jane and exceptional craftsmanship by the Tally Ho crew at every turn. What a wonderful juxtaposition and a way to spend time on a Sunday afternoon. Well done!

Hi Leo don’t normally comment on TH-cam videos but your TH-cam channel kept me sane whilst recovering from a virus not Covid related two things that impressed me most about the project is yours and your volunteers level of skill and craftsmanship is amazing and to be admired and secondly is that she was first built about a mile from my house in Shoreham, would be great if when sailing in the UK you bring her home as Sussex YC is in the same location as the shipyard where she was built, looking forward to the next video many thanks
The joiner work by Clifton was incredible. And Leo that chain block was built with so many cuts, planning, sawing you could have been building a figurine, fantastic episode.

All the work you do is beautiful, I think back of those days when you were pulling roten pieces of timber off that old structure called a boat, I could never imagine how painstaking, precise and technical it would become, as a retired tradesman congratulate you all. BTW I love all the tools and machinery you have.

My weekend would not be complete without a video. I can only look on with admiration as to the workmanship going into this boat.
Leo, some trivia. That big block at the fwd end of the bulwark is pretty close to the layout on sailing trawlers. They (specifically the Brixham sloops, but later mules and Lowestoft smacks) had a big roller next to the stem, flush with the rail, over which ran kind of relief line to the trawl. The idea was that if the trawl fouled, the main warp would come loose, and this relief line would take up and swing the smack into the wind. We used it for anchoring though, and for that it was perfect!

I hope from bottom of my heart that after 100 years, someone as talented as Leo and his team will restore Tally Ho once again to it's full glory. They will have amazing material on their hands on how Tally Ho was restored last time (If someone will archive this channel in a way that they can still watch these videos).
After every episode I'm somehow more and more in awe on craftsmanship and how uncompromisingly every small detail is done on this ship. Leo has been able to gather amazing talented team around him. And to addition the production quality of each episode surpasses most of big budget tv productions. Hats off to you all!!

Well, considering Leo, he'd most likely try to keep Tally Ho in much better overall condition that when he first got it for whomever gets her for another restoration job. A lot of these parts would likely survive to the next reincarnation of the boat!

The number of skills that Leo has mastered to pull this off hurts my brain. Master woodworker, solo bluewater passage-maker, navigator, draftsman, CAD designer, naval architect (this is not an exaggeration; you need to understand the structure and purpose and engineering of everything on the boat), materials science expert, purchasing agent, machinist, manager, project planner, foreman, video editor, cameraman, financial manager, producer/director...and don't underestimate the talent to be a likable on-camera presenter. It's crazy.
I've been watching from the beginning, and I still get blown away twice a month. Clifton, you are one BMF, outstanding work as usual.

I have really enjoyed watching Leo and his merry men doing a beautiful job, and bringing their craft to all of us. All the traditional crafts may pass us by, if we don't document them, and hand down those skills to all of our future generations.
Lovely ! I just saw him routing those teak pieces and I could still smell it from here (AUS) thanks to the many pieces I used to machine on our o/h routers back in the '70's !
Seeing 5 years ago your first episode I knew it was going to be a huge task to complete Tally Ho. I hope I will see this ship in the future in real life. Here in The Netherlands we have some events with sailing ships and hope you and your crew will come to one of these events. Wow.

Yet another great video! I have done general carpentry in my youth and cabinetry for many years and only later in life began to restore medieval furniture. My passion is hand tools and absolute perfection in every detail. It is so interesting to see my own interests displayed in video after video…until now…at the very end of this vide I noticed on one of the deck planks that an inside corner cross grain cut had been carried about a 1/16th too far and still been applied to the deck right where the eye is naturally drawn to the lovely teak framing work. Every detail oriented craftsman that boards your boat will instantly spot that cut and wonder who it was that left it in the work…..but the music was great and the video fascinating! Thank you so much for sharing your great adventure with an old man!

Leo, THIS video is one of the best you have produced in the whole time that you have been doing them. From the absolutely hillarious ad for the Knife company with all participants getting in on the act to Clifton's absolutely beautiful joinery work on the comings and your fabrication of the purple heart block for the prow. All first class elements that shows your talents as a "Ring leader".
You surely have come full circle as a master boat builder. The Tally Ho will be a wonderful cruiser and I hope that you get old and grey on this beautiful boat. As Clifton said, "the next guy to do the restoration on the Tally Ho will be dealing with all of the elements (a hundred years from now?) that he and you have installed on the Tally Ho". Hard to think about that in this stage of the game as it has not even been in the water yet. It is so rewarding to see this vessle come to fruition. Being in San Diego and not dealing with the raw weather of the North West it is hard to imagine working in the winter months but as an Englishman, you are quite accostomed to the weather changes. You really have put the resurgance and newfound interest in the wooden boat craft. Look at all the new viewers that have got bitten by the bug and all those old wooden boats out there may be saved and restored due to your sharing your love of boat building. God speed and God bless you and the crew in this wonderful tale. I certainly don't want it to ever end ! ! !

What an episode! The bulwark receiver - getting the right angle for a 2' hole to be drilled, and both different and correct - wow! Also the long shot of the deck showing all of Clifton's immaculate sill work, my goodness, such beauty.
