    The unfinished staircase was planned to go to a caponier facing towards a certain other defence but then some spoilsport in the planning of forts cancelled it being created :(
    However there is a caponier on the West side of this site

    All that barbed wire makes me think that it was the stuff that had been all along the south coast beaches during the war. It was all ripped up from 1945 onwards - maybe this is it's final resting place. I've never seen so much, and to find that it is so prolific, it is actually turning into ground, is fascinating - and not a little frightening, to be honest. Needs a scrap dealer with an electro-magnet crane, to shift the horrible stuff.

    Back in the days when we were kids and exploring the tunnels of Dover, that area was inaccesible due to the site being occupied by the Royal Engineers that used to be based in Dover.

    • @clairedouglas5450
      @clairedouglas5450 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, I was thinking the barbed wire must have been there to keep people out at one time.

    The fire bucket with the handle on the bottom was an old army trick for a fire bucket that hangs up on a fire posts in the building contains sand. The handle on the bottom stopped squaddies using them to prop open fire doors or doors in general.

    Hi guys, I agree there did seem to be a weird kind of serial killers lair type feel to those tunnels and that mask was just plain freaky. A great explore though folks of another forgotten golden gem. Ian I did send you a private message on your Instagram page that you might be interested in. Thank you for sharing, much love. xx💖🤘

    Easier way into that moat than the way you went in. There's also another sewage hole there covered by a wheel barrow that's alot deeper than the open hole you looked down. Can also get into the moat of a certain place on the opposite side of the road from that moat as the tunnels that are now back filled used to connect them.

  • @thra5herxb12s
    @thra5herxb12s 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's the wheelbarrow I walked past without looking under it. On someone elses video it had loads of rubble chucked down it. Looks like someones been back and started clearing it out A lot easier to explore here since the army cleared out 👍

    Until funds and labour are available, the vegetation is best left in place as it protects the brick and stonework from the elements. The bucket with the handle underneath is a fire bucket which would have been filled with sand. The extra handle gave a better grip for throwing the heavier contents over a fire.

    That area is part of the scheduled ancient monument nearby (across 258) so no metal detecting. At the end of the video the rifle range is documented. The site is a haunt of rough sleepers.

    Just an educated guess but I assume they laid the barbed wire out over the landscape in places where they wouldn't be able to see someone climbing up they just lay barbed wire up the sides of the cliff to make it unclimbable

    I've done a fair bit of exploring round the Western Heights, and I can't figure out where this is. So, as I understand it, there's three main forts, the Drop Redoubt, the Detached Bastion and the Citadel. Where's this one in relation to them?
