    Samphire Hoe was created with the earth,rock etc removed from the channel tunnel,and the railway line is the main line from Margate ,via Ramsgate ,Dover,Folkestone Ashford etc. Shakespear beach is between there and Dover.

    Looks to have been a rail link to the battery, (ammunition deliverys most likely), most rail lines have those access points along beside them, poles above would maybe carry phone lines etc.

    As it was an early war production rangefinder, Steel shutters added later in the war for strafing and shrapnel Protection. Most later produced rangefinder bunkers had the roof slab and front projecting much further out to give angled protection from aircraft fire.

    Look like cable ducts. Inspection pits maybe.. also they would maybe aid in pulling through of updates or new cables. Just putting it out there... Also I used shoot at Lydden spout whilst training at Shorncliffe back in the 70,s.. great content as usual folks..

    It would be good if the National Trust restored at least one BOP to original or even safe condition, as a tourist attraction, from where people could enjoy that spectacular view in relative safety, and, like the tower on Samphire Hoe, below, it could carry information boards, etc.

    The second bunker visited appears to be an early fully manual rangefinder site with an early rangefinder table/mount.

    After seeing what you found with that pillbox, it is similar to one's here in Australia that were retrofitted with a targetting Radar used in conjunction with mk1 eyeball binocular rangefinder (That's what the triangular concrete plinth is for in the front of the pillbox facing out to sea.)
    The radar would've been Mounted on a short square frame with the bottom of the antenna just above the rangefinder section that pokes up. Just enough to have the radiating part of the search beam clear of obstructions and metalwork.

    That's not ventilation for the tunnel, it's cooling. There are 40 refrigeration units on the Shakespeare cliff side and 30 on the French side. (google earth). The French provide the ventilation with a giant fan that pumps air into the service tunnel that vents it into the running tunnels. The deal done is the French do the ventilation and the English do more cooling so both sides share equal running costs.

    Being an OP for the guns the three pillars would have supported a concrete table thus mounted a large telescope on a semi circular rail for fixing bearings on visual targets. Pendennis Castle in Cornwall has a restored gun battery OP with all of this set up. Check English Heritage Pendennis Castle Half moon battery. Great video .

    I never really understand the point of camouflaging these defences really. Any manmade structure with straight lines stands out from the air like a sore thumb, plus especially in this case, the locations are so obvious anyway. I doubt very much the axis wouldn't have known they where there, even if they were just guessing! Maybe it might help at a point in time, at a local level for the Luftwaffe pilot for example? Plus radio masts, I mean what a giveaway! I always think the same about the Regional Seat of Government nuclear bunkers, supposedly secret, but with a huge great mast on top of all of them, or very nearby, usually in the middle of nowhere. I bet both sides in the cold war new exactly where each others hiding places where, both thinking that they don't, and it's not like there wasn't any technology and that, especially later on. Very interesting vid as always guys, many thanks.

    Are you sure those "Drainage pits" aren't the cabling and distribution points for multiple command detonated lines of foo gas canisters/mines along the easiest attack approach to the battery site?

  • @sleepwalker3520
    @sleepwalker3520 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    to me they seem like soap pits, and the pipes would be vents to stop transmission of gasses
    i honelstly dont know but thats what they seem like

  • @rossstenner4402
    @rossstenner4402 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    The Concrete plinths are for Watkin range or position finders, the instruments were set firmley in position & electronically transmitted the information to plotting rooms & the guns. See www.victorianforts.co.uk/CoastDefence2.htm for pictures & an explanation

  • @JAY61ish
    @JAY61ish 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Concrete block buildings would have been cheaper and quicker to construct. With less mortar joints and beds making it stronger against small arms fire etc..probably later edition as technology moved on..

    The front entries for feeder cables.

    • @sleepwalker3520
      @sleepwalker3520 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it looks like a soap pit to me, but could very well be an old cable route, seems odd that it would need to be vented though

    You wouldn't build elaborate drains along a ridge line like that as the water would drain down to the bottom of the hill anyway
