In the 2023 NHL playoffs the Toronto Maple Leafs faced the Tampa Bay Lightning for the second year in a row. After six straight first round exits, and 19 years without a playoff series win. John Tavares score of the OT winner to end a playoff curse. We break down how a ‘failed’ play a year prior contributed to the very play that ended a playoff curse.

Knies deserves a lot of credit for that play in OT. I will always say that losing him in the Florida series is one of the main reasons they ended up losing so quickly. Maybe they still would’ve lost with him in the lineup, but I think they at least would’ve stood more of a chance with him then without.

we all knew that the team blew its load just winning a single series. we all knew they were gonna get absolutely hammered in R2.
now they can spend the entire length of Matthews' next contract try to win the 8 games it takes to make it to the Conf Final and they can FINALLY get down to the business of breaking our hearts in R3 like the good ol' days of the 90s and early 2000s.
I think they lost to Florida because Sammy was injured and woll wasnt ready I don’t think Florida smoked them every game was close
Never realized that Tavares' spin move was the last moment of the past two series vs Tampa vut with different results until you brought it up. Seems fitting

It was a beautiful moment. After seeing that and hearing that the Panthers beat the Bruins, I was so sure that the Leafs were going to go on a huge playoff run. Needless to say...that confidence died very quickly in round 2.

@@leokeesic3657 The curse he's talking about is how we haven't been able to get past round 1 for like 19 years lol, we didnt win a cup yet but we did finally get through the first round lol. Even if we did end up getting destroyed by the panthers, the panthers outplayed us there

While his shot would have missed the goal by about three feet without the deflection, the decision to shoot in the first place was very good - I understand that 100% of the shots you don't take, won't go in. And with some traffic in front - so why not?

Panthers fans still are grateful the Leafs beat our hated Tampa rivals (who we never can beat when it matters). I was at the amazing game 3 in Florida. Tons of Toronto fans were there too … and they wanted Florida 😎.

As a Leafs fan, you’d be surprised. While my friends were chanting We Want Florida, you know who I wanted to play against in that second round? Boston, so we could’ve had the chance to have our revenge. So now, my team is a laughing stock more than they were last years.
Tavares did score in that game seven against Tampa, but the goal was nullified by a debatable obstruction call against now-former Leaf, Justin Holl.
The goal was never nullified because the play had already been dead for a couple seconds before he took the shot.

Great video! Really enjoyed it, and love your channel. One thing I would recommend is that you work on your narration. It seems more like you're trying to reach a certain word count in a highschool essay than making TH-cam video commentary. If you were to clean it up a bit so that you don't have as much repetition (especially at the end), I think it would make the video that much better. Either way, gj. This shit ain't easy.
I am a 14 year old girl who plays AA hockey. This series was the happiest moment of my life and of my whole family as we all are leafs fans. Auston is my favorite player but that day was the happiest moment of me and my family’s life.

Another series loss shrouded by controversy (2022 was due to a Holl interference call; 2023 was due to Bobrovsky skating the puck into the net, only for it to be waved off due to the play being considered dead even though the whistle never blew)
Don't forget the bogus high sticking calls in game 6 of 2022. Leafs had just erased a 2-0 deficit and had all the momentum on their side going into the third until back to back soft calls gave TB a 5-3 to tie the game and send it to OT.

I will die protecting our precious Johnny Toronto, NYI can suck one, that insane elation and relief of that goal was something I'll never forget, that image of the moment post goal deserves to go in a museum (or at least my wall), years and years of heartbreak finally culminating to some degree of success. I'm used to being hurt and watching the Leafs lose, now they know what it looks like to win, they just have to build on that.

I can remember back when Toronto's curse was their inability to win a cup. Now expectations have gotten so low that just getting out of the first round is their big accomplishment. Well, congrats, boys. Maybe in another twenty years you'll get out of the second round.

Winning a round in the playoffs is absolutely not a small feat. Would it be better to win a cup? Always. Unquestionably.

Even though the second one went in it was still nearly as shit of a play as the first one. Basically got very lucky on a low speed shot.
It didn’t end any curse unless the only goal the leafs had was to get out of the first round lol. They got completely exposed by the 16th placed panthers in round 2 but congrats on doing something nearly the entire league has done in the last 5 years lol.

Toronto won that series against a over tired team that was on the decline and will be even worse this season and Florida showed the Leafs they weren’t that good.😮

As a born Leafs fan of over 30 years, I take offense to people thinking we care about a round or two. You don't pay 4 guys half the salary cap to disappear for half of all their playoff games.

The thing I find funniest is that everyone was freaking out over the littlest things like Gudas pulling on Jarnkroks stick a little bit or getting mad that the refs called two blatant high sticks the year prior. But when not one, but two massive incorrect calls go in the leafs favour (missed high stick on Hagel in game 6 and Point goal being overturned for no reason in game 3) nobody bats an eye.

Tavares doesnt have what it takes to win imo. Every team he plays on struggles with him as a leader. He's too quiet in the locker room to be a captain.
