Im an Aussie that grew up not knowing what ice hockey was. I started following team Canada that year when I caught their first round game randomly, after watching this gold medal game, I’ve been a die hard hockey fan ever since. Best sport in the world !
I was a Canadian living in Australia, I remember watching it first thing in the morning, and going out in my Canada jersey after to celebrate. All the Canadian’s were wearing there jerseys and all Australian ether cheered with us or looked at us like we were crazy. Which we were haha.

you will be smote if you say ICE hockey in canada. i've been to melbourne twice...nowhere else in oz. i lived in japan on and off for 19 years became a big sumo fan. also met a guy from melbourne who became a great friend. he was a yuge aussie rules fan. got me interested in the sport which is, i think, a great one. follow essendon. i also had a girl friend from wagga wagga.

Crosby's attention to detail is the most impressive bit. His stop, start, acceleration effort is what creates the separation. That isn't luck... That's creating space, which he does with his power - that's skill. No one else sees the ice like that, and even less can act on what they do see in this situation.
every canadian knows where they were when this happened. to say it was a goal of a lifetime is such an understatement. still 13 years later watching the play unfold and hearing iggy and hearing the iconic call of the goal gives me goosebumps

I do....and recall going out to the Danforth with our fourteen-month-old child to the Danforth in Toronto (Yonge St was too far away). What I also remember is not being sure for a few seconds if the golden goal rule was in place. Crosby threw his gloves up as Chris Cuthbert referred to it as being a "golden goal". I could barely hear the announcers anyway. I can't imagine having to go through an entire overtime clinging to a one-goal-lead.

On the hardwood floor in my living room, laying right in front of the TV next to my best friend at the time. I don't remember a lot about my childhood, but I could never forget that moment.
The audio recording of Vancouver's ambient sound from that moment is incredible.
100% a core memory. I doubt any Canadian who watched this game live has forgotten where they were when this golden moment happened.
Was at the casino in Ajax ON. watching it while i played blazing 7's lol. The big screen was right in front of me.

I remember watching and feeling the almost overwhelming excitement when we tied it up with seconds left in regulation. I also remember the deflation that came with Sid sending this one home. That Crosby sure is good at hockey.

I was in downtown Vancouver a few blocks from the Arena when this went down! It was an amazing scene. Everyone chanting GO CANADA GO! Giving each other high fives and hugging. I lost my voice for 2 days from the celebration 🍾
What a place to be in dt van that night. The celebrations afterwards have been unmatched, only topped by when the Canucks won the cup the next year.

Got to watch this with my Dad and family , sadly dad pasted away later in the year but was able to spend this day with him and see how happy he was !! I will hold this memory close still gives me goose bumps when i here "The Golden Goal". Thanks for making this @Hockey Psychology brought me back to a good moment in my life.
That was one of the greatest games I've ever seen. I was in Vancouver. My entire neighborhood erupted after the goal, and shortly after that there were mobs of people wandering around the streets cheering for hours. What a great day for Canada, and therefore the world.

Pretty sure he didn't, unfortunately, it's a term I've mostly heard in soccer the winning goal in sudden death OT is referred to as the Golden Goal
Chris Cuthbert is brilliant. He came up with "Golden Goal" on the spot based on Golden Goals in Futbol.
I remember hearing Luongo himself say that he was actually going to freeze the puck prior to giving it to Niedermayer. Niedermayer called for it and then passed it to Crosby and the rest is history!
Not quite. Scotty passed it Sid the Kid, who then hollered "Iggy!" to Jarome "Iggy" Iginla. At that point the rest is history. Iggy was the unsung hero.

American, watched this game at the dining hall at my university. Was 18 and a freshman, such a shitty result from my perspective. But I have lifelong friends I made sitting there watching these Olympics.

As long as Russia is banned from all sports competitions, we still won't get a best on best tournament, even if the NHL allows it. Canada and Russia were for the most part the top two countries in hockey for the last several decades. Without them, it wouldn't be the same.

I was at the airport when the game was on talking to Mike Gillis. Trevor, Stan and John Weisbrod were there too. We were on the same flight to Chicago. Weisbrod (an American) was streaming it on the plane until he was told to shut it down just after the US tied it up. Much to Weisbrod's joy.
We were in the air when the golden goal was scored and the Pilot announced it. The cheers were deafening.
The salt Lake city game was the big one for me, with Waynes press conference to build everything up. You should do a video on that one next.
I discovered hockey on french TV in 1980 Olympics (famous "miracle on ice") and have been hoocked to the game ever since. in 2010 I was rooting for Canada because of players like Bergeron and Crosby... and because I'm french of course (we always have a soft spot for Canada... and moreover I'm a Leafs fan.)

I was going through the outdoor security for the closing ceremonies. Suddenly, the security guards started cheering, people on condo balconies started cheering, and we knew we had gold! Inside BC Place the audience - us- rehearsed for the closing ceremonies. Once complete, they announced there was time to show the overtime for gold. 80,000 went nuts when they saw Crosby's arms go up! Pure joy!
I was in the living room at my dad’s place. When the puck went in it was pandemonium. Remember sprinting outside cause of the adrenaline. Everyone one was going nuts. Cars were honking in the streets for a good hour. Having that moment and then the Canucks 2011 run were the 2 greatest years of my hockey viewing life.
Was cheering for team USA. Me and dad jumped from the couch when Parise got the goal. I wasn't a pens fan so by default not a crosy fan so him scoring put a little extra salt in the wound. Best game still I ever watched on TV.

I remember pacing in my living room as soon as overtime started - as I do when a game really matters to me. I still recall raising both arms and hooting when I saw Sid score... and I am not usually that vocal watching a game. Awesome memory!
On a related note, I remember I was travelling in Florida during the Salt Lake Olympics (2002) and was at Epcot during the gold medal game. I was trying to find somewhere to watch it, and asked a few people. If they were American they typically said "what gold medal game?" or "is USA playing?". Eventually I found it... at the Canadian pavilion of course. :)

I remember this game vividly. Bummer that we lost, but you couldn't ask for better quality hockey. One of the best tournaments of all time.
The world cup of hockey never got the same status as the Olympics. Outside of Canada, no one really seemed to care about that tournament. Even in Canada I don't recall a lot of enthusiasm for it or talk about it after it was over. Nothing compared to the summit series in 72, or the three Olympic gold that Canada won in the last twenty plus years.
Then in the last world cup, they made two all star teams, one for Europe and one for North America. That to me was a mistake, especially with the N.A. team. Who in Canada or U.S. wanted N.A. to win? McDavid wasn't happy playing for N.A. and said that he wouldn't do it again if there was another W.C. with N.A.. It was a bit more understandable for Europe to allow good players from smaller European countries to be in the tournament, but no reason for the N.A. team.
I remember being in high school watching the game live with the entire school, was in the cafeteria on a projector, everyone got out of class to watch live, the school erupted when he scored the goal, it was absolutely amazing and one of the best hockey memories, hopefully we’ll get another chance to witness something like this agaib
Old Canuck living DownUnder here. I was in Nelson, New Zealand in a heritage house we lived in for a while near The Brook. Though we're in Aussie now, we still have that house and I can see/smell the room in my mind, all kauri wood and high ceilings, heavy curtains and drafty as old Kiwi houses tend to be. The TV signal was crap and I only had sound. Early in the game, upon observing the intensity of the game, an announcer from England remarked "see here, these lads are out to hurt each other" Yup. Despite every level of interference on the airwaves, I heard Crosby yell "Iggy" and the rest they say is history. But I'm old enough to remember Paul Henderson's goal in Russia in the first Canada Cup decider. I was in the library at my junior high school in Parksville BC and the whole school was watching a grainy small black and white TV with the sound cranked to distortion. Both times, this crusty Canadian teared up.

I was almost 16 back then. Detroit native watching the game so obviously the 09 finals still stung a bit on top of this one. Then to think Fairy Dettman won’t even allow NHL players to compete in the Olympics anymore for “protection” sake. Game for the ages but one of the biggest heartbreaks in my lifetime.
Yzerman’s double OT game winner against the Blues was also a broken play. When it happened I was crushed because I was cheering for the Blues. The next day at school we were that was the craziest goal I’ve ever seen. Now it’s my favorite goal ever scored. Off a broken play

I'm from Brazil and started to watch hockey in the middle of the pandemic. Even trough i'm 32 there is so much iconic moments that i were not able to follow and even just to saw this goal were never enough to make me feel why were a big deal.
But i loved your video, the buildup to reach the moment of the goal was amazing, i would love a series of moments like these and the breakdown, it's helps me to see the flow of the game and the little details that as a newbie following the sports, i'm just not aware of.

watching this vid gave me chills. i was 7 and remember enjoying the mario and sonic olympic games and wasn’t much of a fan of hockey but ik how high the stakes were. looking back, international hockey needs to return to this. super teams facing off in gold medal games
I wish i had these videos as a kid as I never played organized hockey. The analysis helps point out the otherwise unnoticeable things that good and great players do that make things happen.
This is a great breakdown. I would also love a more in-depth background into Crosby's playing the rest of the tournament and why it was such a big deal that he scored the goal after going pointless in two games. It just made it even more momentous that he pulled it off

Greatest hockey day of my life. We watched it in our family room between the semi-final and gold medal game of my Son's Atom hockey tournament and I was coach. We left shortly after to play the GMG and won the tournament. My greatest hockey memory ever.
My son and I were at the game... 2nd row, centre ice, beside Canada's penalty box. We were given two tickets because at the time he was a 7 year old kid with cancer... and he looked it... bald, feeding tube in his nose, etc. The timekeeper gave us the puck from the 2nd period.... we still have it.
I like to think that Sid's Golden Goal and the entire Canadian team helped give my son the strength to fight his health battle because, 13 years later, my son is a healthy young adult who has put cancer behind him. So, for me, this was the best game I have ever been to... period.
I hope Sid is reading this message. He would find this heart-warming, just like I did. May your kid live a long and fulfilling life. 😊

As a Canadian part of me wants to thank Zach Parise for tying it, sure if he didn't and Canada went on to win 2-1 it would've been awesome on its own and probably saved us a lot of stress but because the US tied it, it allowed for the creation of one of the greatest moments in Canadian hockey history and a moment and a feeling I think every Canadian watching will remember for a long time, those 2 weeks in Vancouver were special and this moment caped it off perfectly

I watched this game when I was 9 years old. Pure nostalgia.
I remember being a Crosby fan girl at the time and everyone was all for Ove and "Crosby as a fluke, not strong enough, too fragile, etc". That moment changed everything, Crosby scoring the winning goal for our country PLUS he had a broken ankle at the time if I remember correctly. Suddenly, everyone around me where a Crosby's fan.

I remember I was at work - I'm not sure if I went there just to watch it or it was after actual work. It was at a recreation facility and I was at the bar/lounge. There were just a couple co-workers there. When Crosby scored, I never jumped up so fast. I threw my hands up in the air in celebration. The goal was so fast in real-time that this was the only reaction that I was a bit surprised this turned out to be a goal. Bartender then brings everyone shots haha

Lived in Vancouver during 2010 Olympic’s. We were 20 of us watching live. Best memory to date. Afterwards we went downtown and everyone, I mean everyone was full of joy and for a day we all felt connected. Best Canadian moment we all felt.
I was squatting in LA and watching this game on a laundromat TV. when Crosby scored I walked outside and screamed in frustration and unintentionally scared the shit out of an old lady walking down the street towards me. this then resulted in me almost getting into a street fight with some dude.... fuckin Crosby, man. smh

I’m old enough to (barely) remember Paul Henderson’s goal against Russia in the ‘72 Summit Series, and I definitely remember Gretzky’s pass to Lemieux to win the Canada Cup in ‘87. Both of those goals were as big for Canadian hockey fans as this-some older fans might say even bigger. That being said, however, I’ll never forget how great it felt watching Sid score this one. Such a great game and great moment in hockey history.

I remember watching this game at a restaurant/ bar in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. I had just taken my 5yo daughter ice skating for the first time. We stopped for a bite to eat and got to watch Sid score the golden goal. The whole place was so excited Sid won it. What a great day!

I was working at Costco in the electronics department, had all the tv's on the game tons of members were all watching - it was pretty cool!
I don’t know if they televised this part but in the intermission between the 3rd and OT they had mike Babcock on the big screen interviewing him. All I remember from that interview is Babs saying this is all part of the plan we just wanted to make it interesting for the fans. Let me tell you that fired up the crowd!

The NHL ruined hockey with f'ing up 2018 and then losing 2022 to COVID hurt so bad... We need 2026 to bring this back. It truly is the pinnacle of hockey.
i was watching this game in my family's living room. we all were. i was so devastated (again!! Red Wings fan) by Crosby that i completely forgot about all the other details that led up to this moment, especially Parise tying it up late. you awakened some deep memories because i had flashbacks when you recapped the rest of the game. 😂
As a Wings fan, this is when Crosby became my most hated player. First, he beat my Wings in 2009 to win the Stanley Cup then he beat my home country with the OT winner to win Olympic Gold the very next year.

I didn't think this goal was more iconic than the Henderson goal - but then again, it was something else when you break it all down.
I was watching the game with my daughter. My wife came into the room and asked why were screaming so much. We explained it was the gold medal game and it was overtime.
She asked, "Is that Crosby boy playing for Canada?" We said yes and she replied "Then why are you worried he will score." She barely made it out of the room and he did.

I was at a hockey party in an apartment in Vancouver's Gastown neighbourhood. The party was silenced when the US tied the game and forced OT. Everyone was sooo stressed! Then the Golden Goal... What I will always remember will be what came after. All you could hear across the city was screaming and cheering. We went up to the roof of the building and that sound- it was incredible. Then everyone erupted onto the streets. I've never had so many high-fives and hugs from random strangers. I never expected to see people doing "keg-stands" in the middle of the street. I never expected to see one of the city's busiest intersections shut down by a game of spontaneous street hockey. Incredible once in a lifetime memories of the game and the entire Olympics. I personally got to see Team Canada play one of the qualifying matches with Germany as well as the womens' semi-final game.
