    If you bow hunt long enough you'll understand Aaron's arrow and broad head rationale. Complete penetration at short range is what we should all strive for. Killer set up , Aaron.

    I've been bowhunting since 73 and have experimented with light v heavy, fixed v mechanical. Rarely will a deer carry your arrow! I'm a ol man now and at 62#s still getting pass throughs 99+% of the time, can only think of 1 that carried a arrow by the fetching a few yards. For the record, I can't tell you how many I've harvested the last 40 years, quit countn a long time ago, not bragging, just a blessed hunter.

    Awesome arrow setup Aaron. I’m shooting 618gr with a single bevel as ell. That arrow will penetrate really nicely especially through bone. I also agree with you that you won’t beat a deer’s reaction with a faster arrow. BUT with a heavier arrow your bow will be quieter.
    Great video!

  • @blaineholcomb2118
    @blaineholcomb2118 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Great arrow / insert / and broadhead selection. That setup will penetrate far better than the toothpick arrows and 100 grain mechanical heads that most guys think are the best. Single bevel 2 blade cut on contact broadheads have been proven to break through and penetrate shoulder bone. And I'm not talking about shoulder blade, I mean the actual shoulder bone itself. Dr. Ed Ashby's tests prove it. As long as the total arrow weight is at least 650 grains then the single bevel heads break through even moose shoulder bones. His test results are online if anyone is interested and there's youtube videos of it too. Too many guys are concerned with speed. When those toothpick arrows and mechanical heads hit any rib or shoulder bone they don't do nearly as well.

    Excellent rationale on the way you configure your sight - makes very good sense. Additionally, an accomplished hunter like yourself doesn't have to explain your choices to us - your success speaks for itself. By the by, John Dudley and Randy Ulmer use relatively heavy arrows and they are two of the best archers and hunters alive today. You and your team are first rate and I wish each of you a safe and fruitful season.

    Last season I tried those Gravedigger broadheads by Bloodsport Archery. Immediately fell in love! They're a fixpandable head that you can set the screw to however loose or tight you want. Awesome for practice! They cut one hell of a hole when set to open easily. Comes in either cut on contact(my favorite design) or chisel tip.

    Shooting lighter arrows wont help you "beat the deer" but it will flatten your trajectory, which really helps when hunting in the woods when you trying the squeeze arrows through windows in brush. That being said heavier arrows do hit harder and get better penetration. All in all you want to go for the best of both worlds the "happy medium". Good luck this season everyone!

    Nice bow setup, Bear compounds are very underrated. forget about what everyone else thinks, use what works and is reliable. a heavy arrow with a good cut-on-contact broadhead has been a tried and true performer for many decades, and it will still work well many decades from now! let us know how that Kuma shoots! you guys should get together and make a video of everyone target shooting their main hunting bows for the season ;-) .

    Realizing this is an old video that broad head design is one the best options you could ever had picked, IMO. I’ve been bow hunting since 1963 at 13 years old. That basic style with double bevel edges was about it for 40 years. And the previous 30,000 years. I have continued using the plain fixed maybe with bleeders some years. Back in the day we didn’t have a clue on arrow weight and foc. We just used whatever was at the local K-mart. God’s truth, I have lost one deer in all my hunting with a bow. From recurves to long bows to compounds in all these years. I can not remember taking any shot more than 25 yards ever on a meat animal. I’ve killed lots deer with Easton Lightspeed target arrows with 80 grain Slick Trick 4 blade. Maybe 300 grain? No idea.

    There is a load of information on documented deer reaction time as it relates to arrow speed and ability to impact at POA. I can link a write up to a good, lengthy article I read about, but basically once you reach out past about 30 yards, you need an excess of like 350 fps to get anywhere near matching the deer ducking the string, not really matching the speed until 380 +fps or so.

    Watched all the THP pig hunting stuff with you guys and Ranch Fairy, and I went and built a heavy(ier) arrow. I weighed my original arrows, and they were already at 517, but I got my arrow set up to the like 642. So cool you guys are coming to North Dakota! I’m located way up in the north eastern part of the state, it’s mostly ag so not much public land around here. If you look up the Pembina Gorge theres lot of public land and really cool hunting there! Good luck I’m sure you guys will have success hopefully have good experience up here as well! Good luck!

    Totally agree with your comments about deer reaction time...I dont shoot beyond 30 yards because there are too many variables I cant control (wind, surrounding noise, etc...) Too many for me to take a risk at wounding a deer...I have a natural "wiggle" I cant control so now that Ive gotten older Ive even moved my MAX in to 25 yards and I feel real confident at that distance...Great videos guys and good luck this season...Mine starts in upstate NY on Sept 27th!
