I’m a 60 year old rocker who as a teen was into Black Sabbath Deep Purple Led Zeppelin Cream etc. Back then I didn’t like the Beatles as they weren’t a rock band. But in my late twenties there was an upsurge in interest in the Beatles and especially then Sergeant Pepper as it was twenty years old then and the title track says ‘it was twenty years ago today’. After hearing the Sergeant Pepper album on radio one I bought it and began to appreciate the Fab Fours music and to learn how innovative they were. If you watch a few videos about what the Beatles did first you will realise just how much they changed music. They took rock and roll, country and western, Motown, jazz, swing and elements of classical music and used them all on one song or another to create songs people had never before heard or imagined. Tomorrow never knows for instance sounds like it was made in the late eighties. Paul and John and later George wrote songs of lyrical genius with tunes that even 50 years plus later are played by everyone from beginners to the biggest stars. Yesterday is the most covered song of all time. In April 64 the Beatles held all top 5 places on the US billboard singles charts. Ask any top musician who were their influences and there is a good chance they will include the Beatles. Even guys like Ozzy and Lenny credit the Beatles as a big influence. Paul and John are the most successful songwriters ever, George wrote while my guitar gently weeps an all time guitarist favourite, Ringo while not up there with John Bonham, Keith Moon etc is admired by his fellow drummers and is a great drummer when it comes to holding a steady beat for the rest to work from. Post Beatles all four had successful careers and if John hadn’t been murdered in 1980 I don’t doubt he would have written many more hits and worked with other great artists. I think as you get older you will appreciate the Beatles more and more, I know I have.

You always have to see the music in the context of the time of its release. In this respect, the Beatles were unique.There were not many things that existed before the Beatles. To bring in elements from classical music from Bach or Beethoven or Handel etc. recordings to be played backwards, ambiguous texts, to use a wide variety of instruments, a wide variety of bars from 3/4 time or 7/4 time, etc. Even on the last album Abbey Road synthesizers were used.Completely normal for us today . ,at that time absolutely new in 1969 . There weren't many artists who used synthesizers. Electronically changing the sound of instruments or the vocals was all quite revolutionary.
Great, thoughtful dissection dude. Man I really hope you come around on For No One, lol. It's so good. McCartney really got at the core of the sounds, melodies, and moods that remain at the heart of pop music to this day. It's the beginning of truly modern pop to me.
For No One is my second favorite Beatle's song, overall. It's right up there with the best of Bach and Mozart. I think it just takes a while for people to 'get' it.
I don't think I ever really appreciated it until I got my heart broken after a long and meaningful relationship... then it all made sense, and, oh how those words rip into you... echoing dolefully around your empty, hollowed out heart. I know of no other break-up song that does it better. Our reviewer here is young (as everyone keeps telling him) and still has a lot of living to do.
Nah, the overall “best” album changes every once and a while in the zeitgeist. It was Pepper for the longest time, Abbey Road before that, and it’s been this for a long time ever since Rolling Stone’s list. Rubber Soul will probably get the spot when the remix comes out.

The Beatles are an experience. They grow and grow and grow on you. I am no fan boy, I'm a fan of music and after years of going through thousands of bands and genres House and reggae blues in the late 80s early 90s, onto dance and so on, I can honestly say that no one does it for me like the Beatles. When you realise that most of their album tracks are as good or better than most artists singles released tracks There songs don't sound similar and even on an album you get your monies worth with great songs one after another and this is before you get to Past Masters Vol 1 and 2
What makes Revolver my favorite Beatles album is how it balances their early bright, exuberant sound with the sophistication and creativity of their later work. It's all here. And I enjoy everything on it, and that edges it out, for me.
The thing is it still sounds fresh whereas so much that come after it sounds from a time period, often tired and dated. Revolver has no time period sound.
Also, to add to the second half of the album - ‘For No One’ culminates in the realisation his relationship is over, his friends direct him to ‘Doctor Robert’ who helps him get over the relationship by essentially drugging the patient into a euphoric high… the comedown to this track is ‘I Want To Tell You’ a song about all the regrets running through his mind and wishing he could go back and tell the girl what he felt, as he is unable to do so he again turns to drugs, Paul has often said ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ is a song about the bands discovery of weed, onto ‘Tomorrow Never Knows’ where he sits there high, concluding life is not over just because he lost his girl. I feel sometimes you have to experience things in your own life to fully grasp the Beatles music which comes with time, glad you enjoyed though. I’m sure you will revisit this when you feel you need it most.

Someone else has probably mentioned this by now, but "Yellow Submarine" is a Lennon-McCartney song. It was not written by Ringo. I always thought that "Yellow Submarine" was mostly written by John Lennon, but in a recent book, Paul McCartney gives the impression that he played a large role in writing the song. It was definitely not written by Ringo.

I love Yellow Submarine! It's clever, brilliant, absolutely new stuff back in time and it makes me feel so good!! Good Sir and young Paul McCartney piece of art in music!! Ringo sang it because they were so close friends and so they decided that also Ringo had to sing a song per album! I love this friendship o'em!!
The reason most people wanted you to listen to the mono mix is because it was the version the Beatles themselves intended (at the time), and also because it has some effects that are not present on either stereo mix. The mono mix also has tons of compression that makes it sound heavier in a garagey sort of way, especially the cymbals. She Said She Said for example, the new mix is more "chill" in a way since the guitars are seperated and so much cleaner and the cymbals arent compressed, it removes the intensity. While it sounds better, it makes the song feels different. The effects on Tomorrow Never Knows are also quieter in the 2022 mix, which lots of people don't like, myself included (also the reversed guitar solo was double tracked in the mono mix). However, I feel like all of Paul's songs are absolutely better in the 2022 mix. Paul didn't have any heavy songs on this album that relied in compression for their sound, they were just compressed to fit with everything else (i assume). Here, There and Everywhere for example, the drums and bass are incredibly quiet in mono, while the new mix brings them up a lot. For No One is a more layered song, but on the mono mix you can only hear 1 piano, vocals, bass, drums and french horn, while in 2022 you can also hear the acoustic guitar and maybe another piano (and the bass is turned down a bit). With George's songs and Yellow Submarine (actually written by John and Paul, just sung by Ringo either mix is good in my opinion. TLDR: Mono is how the Beatles originally intended it and released it, and it has some effects that arent in the 2022 mix. Most of John's songs are heavier in the mono mix, while most of Paul's are muddier/overly compressed
Anyways great album, glad you liked it, glad you like Gizzard, if you ever react to Sgt. Pepper I _beg_ that you don't do the 2009 version, it doesn't include tons of effects that were in the mono version, and the 2017 mix brings most of them back.
For No One is my second favorite Beatle's song, out of their entire catalog. 'A Day in the Life' is my favorite. I guess we all have differing filters. And we all want everyone else to think the same way.
Ignore the mono supremacists. My introduction to Beatles albums was the 2014 mono box set on vinyl that I still have today. Mono mixes are fantastic on speakers, but muddy on headphones. Stereo mixes are mostly fantastic, Atmos is even better. And never listen to people that defend the original stereo mix lol. I love the grab bag chaotic sound of the White Album. I think people like myself who are fans of psychedelics tend to like it. "(They ) aren't like super trippy and hypnotic and pushing the boundaries of music or anything." Tomorrow Never Knows has entered the chat. Also, the thing that make The Beatles so great is that almost all of their albums are phenomenal and they go so many different places. Not to mention things like John's vocals, Paul's perfect pop sensibility, George's eastern influence, and Ringo's drumming that perfectly fits every song.
"Openers are often my least favourite songs on the albums" 'Taxman' can still be your least favourite on Revolver and nobody would bat an eye. That's how good Revolver is.
If you like this type of music (tomorrow never knows) Try magical mystery tour album. Also there’s two albums of non album tracks - these are the A and B sides of singles. There’s a song called Rain you will like also hey Jude, don’t let me down.
yea, they had too many good tunes, most bands have trouble getting a single abum side. so for these sessions - 'Paperback Writer' (trad Beatles ) and ' Rain' which is special. where the 45 rpm
Listen to any other album that existed prior to Revolver and you'll really understand how experimental every single track was. Listening to it without the context and it's a great album. Listen to it with that context, and it's mind blowing and then you'll really understand why they have the reputation they do.
Judging these albums is so so difficult you are young but I lived through this era. The fact was that they were innovative true there were others but none more consistent. This album left me open mouthed as a spotty teenager. For its time it was groundbreaking.
Almost all albums by other bands give you 10 and sometimes 12 tracks. The Beatles always give you more content. They didn't stretch songs out just to fill album space. Songs were shorter but also individual creative pieces.
To say that Ringo is not in the top 100 best drummers in history is an understatement, considering that he always appears high up on the list, and that several drummers up there have already praised him. The point is that it must be difficult to tell any member of the Beatles and anyone else that they are one of the best at their craft...but HEY? What can we do if the guys are the bosses of the game? 🗣️
I think you’re taking entirely too much stuff for granted when it comes to how innovative they were. The invited half of modern recording techniques. They didn’t close mic drums before the Beatles, really. People didn’t use feedback on recordings. They popularized double-tracking vocals. They invented playing tracks backwards BY PLAYING SOLOS IN REVERSE ORDER AND PHYSICALLY WINDING THE TAPE BACKWARDS. That’s not even 1/8th of the shit they introduced. Read something about just how this album was made ALONE. Then listen to it again. As far as songwriting goes-you need to listen to what other people were making in 1966. Don’t compare them to today-BECAUSE EVERYONE IS BORROWING FROM THEM. In 1966, “Eleanor Rigby” was REVOLUTIONARY. Even the quick fade-out on “Taxman” is cool BECAUSE IT BREAKS CONVENTIONS. 90% people who think the Beatles are just “okay” don’t know enough about songwriting, audio engineering, or the history of pop music to really assess them. These videos are not objective analysis of The Beatles and their affect on music, they are my personal feelings on the music and how it appeals to me. The people wgho are warning you off the stereo mix are probably referring to the older mix with its awkward left-right hard panning. If you're listening to a 2022 mix this is the Giles Martin re-mix, using Peter Jacjkson's machine-assisted learning tech to de-mix the instruments and rebalance the stereo image. A great success on most tracks - with the exception of She Said She Said which loses impact.
i heard that most albums released in England are 14 songs within 3 minutes at that time, it's like a standard, when beatles recorded their first album they had to cover several songs to make it to 14 songs, also all their stuff before sgt peppers are within 3 minutes, i don't know if it was because the music industry had developed or just because they had more money to do different things that they didn't need to think about the time limit after revolver album
Defiantly with the influence of Bob Dylan and the weed roll up they had in 1964 with him changed their idea of making music along with the psychedelic music that was pumping out from San Francisco was sprouting up new ideas all over the place not to mention Johns weird l - s d experience he had with actor Peter Fonda that led to She Said She Said being the song it is.. ... Another great album that came out in 1966 is The Mothers of Invention/ Freakout
If you put other famous drummers in to replace Ringo assuming some time travel alternate universe, you'll likely see the Beatles become less popular as the songs are destroyed by ego.
The White Album probably should of just been a single album instead of a double. They had so many bits of songs though when they came back from India they just decided to throw them all on.
The period Rubber Soul/ Revolver/ Sgt Peppers were when they were at their creative peak, the later stuff is still great but they were starting to fall apart as a band

At Ringo's influence was basically changing time signatures and using a lot of toms lyrically which is not happening in any songs in those days. And the front three in the band saw that and he was just a better fit .As for rock drummers ,there was no rock drummers back, their were. session drummers and jazz drummers trying to make like rock drummers. There were only the American rock drummers, who were not exactly genre-based drummers . In summary, drummers are basically influenced by session session jazz, country or even pop, styled drummers. So your ranking of a drummer that pretty much was the first proper rock and roll drummer from a band that was not a bunch of session players nope he was the first rock and roll drummer.

This album is okay. I am sure it was very great for the time period. today it just sounds fine. Some good songs but overall, a lot of okay ones. I can see how they were innovative and inspired many others. But I am not listening to most of the songs on this album often.
The Beatles were a pivot point in music. There is no band that even comes close to them in creativity. Go study music dude. Eleanor Rigby written in Dorian mode is genius and so is For No One. Yellow Submarine is a reconstruction by McCartney of a dark Lennon ballad. A good place to start learning about music is the documentary made by Classical Composer Howard Goodall about how the Beatles saved music, including classical music. The first thing of note about Revolver is has no sound from any particular time period. It is still fresh today.

I prefer the American release, left out Dr Robert and Bird can sing, a much more concise experience. Yes Sterio recording, listen with headphones. You have no idea how revolutionary this album was. Following the very strong Rubber Soul. Each song packed a punch. from the gritty laugh that opens Taxman. Yellow Sub was obviously a children's song. and it caught on like wildfire around the world I heard a French version. George studied under the Sitar Master, Ravi Shanker. and learned to play this complex instrument, a sound new to the Western world. I was 18 graduating High School when it came out. I had been following the group since Hard Days Night. keeping an eye on their progress, Songs like "Yesterday" land "You've got to hide your love away" were changing popular music. 66 was a good year for music,

Someone else has probably mentioned this by now, but "Yellow Submarine" is a Lennon-McCartney song. It was not written by Ringo. I always thought that "Yellow Submarine" was mostly written by John Lennon, but in a recent book, Paul McCartney gives the impression that he played a large role in writing the song. It was definitely not written by Ringo.
Yeah, I didn't learn that until I watched a video right before I uploaded this one. I always though it was a Ringo song, and I was blown away when it wasn't

I love Yellow Submarine! It's clever, brilliant, absolutely new stuff back in time and it makes me feel so good!! Good Sir and young Paul McCartney piece of art in music!! Ringo sang it because they were so close friends and so they decided that also Ringo had to sing a song per album! I love this friendship o'em!!
The reason most people wanted you to listen to the mono mix is because it was the version the Beatles themselves intended (at the time), and also because it has some effects that are not present on either stereo mix. The mono mix also has tons of compression that makes it sound heavier in a garagey sort of way, especially the cymbals. She Said She Said for example, the new mix is more "chill" in a way since the guitars are seperated and so much cleaner and the cymbals arent compressed, it removes the intensity. While it sounds better, it makes the song feels different. The effects on Tomorrow Never Knows are also quieter in the 2022 mix, which lots of people don't like, myself included (also the reversed guitar solo was double tracked in the mono mix).
However, I feel like all of Paul's songs are absolutely better in the 2022 mix. Paul didn't have any heavy songs on this album that relied in compression for their sound, they were just compressed to fit with everything else (i assume). Here, There and Everywhere for example, the drums and bass are incredibly quiet in mono, while the new mix brings them up a lot. For No One is a more layered song, but on the mono mix you can only hear 1 piano, vocals, bass, drums and french horn, while in 2022 you can also hear the acoustic guitar and maybe another piano (and the bass is turned down a bit). With George's songs and Yellow Submarine (actually written by John and Paul, just sung by Ringo either mix is good in my opinion.
TLDR: Mono is how the Beatles originally intended it and released it, and it has some effects that arent in the 2022 mix. Most of John's songs are heavier in the mono mix, while most of Paul's are muddier/overly compressed
Anyways great album, glad you liked it, glad you like Gizzard, if you ever react to Sgt. Pepper I _beg_ that you don't do the 2009 version, it doesn't include tons of effects that were in the mono version, and the 2017 mix brings most of them back.
I think there are parts of both I appreciate more over the other. It doesn’t have to be a contest!

For No One is my second favorite Beatle's song, out of their entire catalog. 'A Day in the Life' is my favorite. I guess we all have differing filters. And we all want everyone else to think the same way.

Ignore the mono supremacists. My introduction to Beatles albums was the 2014 mono box set on vinyl that I still have today. Mono mixes are fantastic on speakers, but muddy on headphones. Stereo mixes are mostly fantastic, Atmos is even better. And never listen to people that defend the original stereo mix lol. I love the grab bag chaotic sound of the White Album. I think people like myself who are fans of psychedelics tend to like it.

Also, the thing that make The Beatles so great is that almost all of their albums are phenomenal and they go so many different places. Not to mention things like John's vocals, Paul's perfect pop sensibility, George's eastern influence, and Ringo's drumming that perfectly fits every song.
I always thought that mono was no stereo, or separation, all the same on each channel. Like what you hear on AM stations. Vs. FM (stereo).

Listen to any other album that existed prior to Revolver and you'll really understand how experimental every single track was. Listening to it without the context and it's a great album. Listen to it with that context, and it's mind blowing and then you'll really understand why they have the reputation they do.
Judging these albums is so so difficult you are young but I lived through this era. The fact was that they were innovative true there were others but none more consistent. This album left me open mouthed as a spotty teenager. For its time it was groundbreaking.

Ringo wrote 2 1/2 songs with the Beatles: Octopus’s Garden, Don’t Pass Me By and part of What Goes On. I’m not counting Flying and Dig It.

Almost all albums by other bands give you 10 and sometimes 12 tracks. The Beatles always give you more content. They didn't stretch songs out just to fill album space. Songs were shorter but also individual creative pieces.

To say that Ringo is not in the top 100 best drummers in history is an understatement, considering that he always appears high up on the list, and that several drummers up there have already praised him. I think you’re taking entirely too much stuff for granted when it comes to how innovative they were. The invited half of modern recording techniques. They didn’t close mic drums before the Beatles, really. People didn’t use feedback on recordings. They popularized double-tracking vocals. They invented playing tracks backwards BY PLAYING SOLOS IN REVERSE ORDER AND PHYSICALLY WINDING THE TAPE BACKWARDS. That’s not even 1/8th of the shit they introduced. Read something about just how this album was made ALONE. Then listen to it again.
As far as songwriting goes-you need to listen to what other people were making in 1966. Don’t compare them to today-BECAUSE EVERYONE IS BORROWING FROM THEM. In 1966, “Eleanor Rigby” was REVOLUTIONARY. Even the quick fade-out on “Taxman” is cool BECAUSE IT BREAKS CONVENTIONS. 90% people who think the Beatles are just “okay” don’t know enough about songwriting, audio engineering, or the history of pop music to really assess them. I am well aware of how influential and innovative the band are, but influence and innovation doesn't affect how much *I* like something, personal connection does. These videos are not objective analysis of The Beatles and their affect on music, they are my personal feelings on the music and how it appeals to me. The people wgho are warning you off the stereo mix are probably referring to the older mix with its awkward left-right hard panning. If you're listening to a 2022 mix this is the Giles Martin re-mix, using Peter Jacjkson's machine-assisted learning tech to de-mix the instruments and rebalance the stereo image. A great success on most tracks - with the exception of She Said She Said which loses impact.

i heard that most albums released in England are 14 songs within 3 minutes at that time, it's like a standard, when beatles recorded their first album they had to cover several songs to make it to 14 songs, also all their stuff before sgt peppers are within 3 minutes, i don't know if it was because the music industry had developed or just because they had more money to do different things that they didn't need to think about the time limit after revolver album

Defiantly with the influence of Bob Dylan and the weed roll up they had in 1964 with him changed their idea of making music along with the psychedelic music that was pumping out from San Francisco was sprouting up new ideas all over the place not to mention Johns weird l - s d experience he had with actor Peter Fonda that led to She Said She Said being the song it is.. ... Another great album that came out in 1966 is The Mothers of Invention/ Freakout

The White Album probably should of just been a single album instead of a double. They had so many bits of songs though when they came back from India they just decided to throw them all on.
The period Rubber Soul/ Revolver/ Sgt Peppers were when they were at their creative peak, the later stuff is still great but they were starting to fall apart as a band

Almost all songs were short back in the day for all bands.
At Ringo's influence was basically changing time signatures and using a lot of toms lyrically which is not happening in any songs in those days.
And the front three in the band saw that and he was just a better fit .As for rock drummers ,there was no rock drummers back, their were. session drummers and jazz drummers trying to make like rock drummers.
There were only the American rock drummers, who were not exactly genre-based drummers .
In summary, drummers are basically influenced by session session jazz, country or even pop, styled drummers.
So your ranking of a drummer that pretty much was the first proper rock and roll drummer from a band that was not a bunch of session players nope he was the first rock and roll drummer.

This album is okay. I am sure it was very great for the time period. today it just sounds fine. Some good songs but overall, a lot of okay ones. I can see how they were innovative and inspired many others. But I am not listening to most of the songs on this album often.

The Beatles were a pivot point in music. There is no band that even comes close to them in creativity. Go study music dude. Eleanor Rigby written in Dorian mode is genius and so is For No One. Yellow Submarine is a reconstruction by McCartney of a dark Lennon ballad. A good place to start learning about music is the documentary made by Classical Composer Howard Goodall about how the Beatles saved music, including classical music. The first thing of note about Revolver is has no sound from any particular time period. It is still fresh today.

I prefer the American release, left out Dr Robert and Bird can sing, a much more concise experience. Yes Sterio recording, listen with headphones. You have no idea how revolutionary this album was. Following the very strong Rubber Soul. Each song packed a punch. from the gritty laugh that opens Taxman. Yellow Sub was obviously a children's song. and it caught on like wildfire around the world I heard a French version. George studied under the Sitar Master, Ravi Shanker. and learned to play this complex instrument, a sound new to the Western world. I was 18 graduating High School when it came out. I had been following the group since Hard Days Night. keeping an eye on their progress, Songs like "Yesterday" land "You've got to hide your love away" were changing popular music. 66 was a good year for music,
