That song has always been one of my favourites too, but I don't like the remix of it. The acoustic guitar is so low in the mix, which is a weird choice to me. I think the bass is too loud as well. I love most of the rest of the remix though
If you never heard it the Grey Album is one of my favorite remix albums. It definitely sounds dated, but the beats and production are super interesting in every track.
I haven't heard Fantano's videos on the other Beatles remixes, but as an audio professional in the field, it's clear this is out of his wheelhouse. Of course it's his platform, he can do with it whatever he wants, but it does kind of bother me that he's speaking to a captivated audience as if he's knowledgable on something he's not. One of the biggest changes with Revolver was the STEREO MIXES. Revolver was recorded on 4-track tape...for those unfamiliar, in the Pro Tools era today, every individual instrument/vocal or "input" has it's own track. You can tweak it as you like, change the level as you like. They did not have that luxury back then. Multiple instruments got recorded to a single tape, multiple tapes got bounced down... This album never got a true stereo remix because all we have today of the recording sessions is the four-track master tapes, where many instruments live on one tape. However, Giles Martin got permission and help to use the outstanding AI software used for the Get Back documentary, which learns what each individual instrument sounds like. It goes, "oh, this is what John Lennon sounds like," and removes that from the master track so you can edit it individually. It's impossible. It's like pulling pen ink out of a paper; it should be permanent. Or that's the way it's been for years, but it seems like that's all going to change. What I hear on the new Revolver mixes is instrument separation like never before. I GASPED the first time I heard the new Eleanor Rigby mix. The strings were a whole piece before, one thing sitting in the track. But when that song came on, they all hit me--INDIVIDUALLY, in different spots than my brain remembered. It's insane. What did Anthony have to say about the track? "The strings maybe have a little compression?" The ENTIRE fucking sound of the original mix was compression. This was the album that made compression the sound of rock. It's been established as such for years. It's an industry reference point. The new mix didn't "add compression," it breathed life into things. He may have had some good insights later--I didn't make it past song #2. I just couldn't believe what he wasn't hearing.
The Eleanor Rigby track used no AI. Each member of the string quartet were recorded on tracks 1-4 with their on mic and then bounced to track 1, with tracks 2-4 with vocal harmonies. They mixed the pre-bounce string quartet tapes with the vocals. Other tracks used AI when no pre-bounce tapes existed. Fantano may think there is compression simply because the strings were miked as close to the strings as possible.
I loved how dynamic the new mix made the entire album sound, but Tomorrow Never Knows was INCREDIBLE. I've never liked this song as much as I did listening to the new mix.
Let It Be is my personal favourite record from them, with Revolver at a close second. And both of these new mixes have let me fall in love with them all over again.
I totally agree, although I like to hear recordings as they were mastered originally I do think as years and years go by the more I wish Revolver wasn't so high endy so I'm glad we have another version to listen to in the car that packs more of a punch
If you want another great remix of a classic album, I heavily recommend the new remix of Fresh Fruit for Rotten Vegetables by Dead Kennedys that Chris Lord-Algae did.
Gotta disagree here actually, some of the tracks have their bass and guitar cranked up too much. Jello gets drowned out in a number of songs which is a total turn-off.
I was really impressed by it and I feel a lot of love for this album. It was the first Beatles album I heard on cassette in the early 2000s as child. My dad got the cd from the library and then put it on cassette tape. Then from 2009 they remastered all the albums and I was blown away. Always been a Beatlemaniac!
1:21 All Beatles albums that have a mono mix were simultaneously released in Mono and Stereo (maybe give or take a month), just until the last couple the Stereo mixing was done without The Beatles involvement.
wish you had remarked on the new mixes for paperback writer & rain too. some of their best singles from this era, & this redux really did them justice. overall though i think this release was a great balance of respecting the original intentions of the engineers who did the first mixes while also providing some great balance with the stereo imaging. more pared back than the in-your-face modern re-imagining we saw in the last few super deluxe packages. much respect to peter jackson & the team who designed the crazy AI tech that made this possible. i’ve been listening to this album since i was 5, & without any context, i always loved how dramatic the panning was. & after studying audio & doing mixing of my own, i still love the super dramatic originals. you can almost see the engineers turning the knobs. so i was kind of nervous going into this one, but this was a fun experiment and i love it. a lot of these legacy artists seem to feel the need to keep pumping out anniversary editions & such to stay relevant, but i really hope the beatles just leave it at this. i don’t know what else they could do that would make it worth it.
Hi, Anthony. Regarding the rhythm section you mentioned on For No One - it’s a double beat of the kick drum throughout. In the prior mixes this was nearly buried by Paul’s bass on the upbeat. Since 1966, I’ve never known about that. It really changes the dynamics as I hear it.
The editor's note at 1:17 is wrong. Every Beatles album up to and including the White Album came out in mono AND stereo. The original 60s stereo mixes have been the "standard" versions of most of the albums pretty much since the end of the 60s, even though the mono versions were the standard ones IN the 60s. The new remixes aim to improve on those 60s stereo mixes, which had some quirks and limitations based on the technology of the time.
I just recently got some decent headphones for the first time in my life, and listening to Eleanor Rigby and actually hearing the strings coming from all different directions is so incredible.
The mono version is still the best for this album, but it's great that the stereo version is much better now compared to the original 60s stereo version
I've had a beetle infestation at my home for years now and while I've never done anything to curtail it, I'm not going to encourage it with this band either. Thank you very much, Anthony.
Here there and everywhere is probably the most nostalgic song in my entire life. We have this home movie where it’s that song over a bunch of clips of me and my sister as like 3-4 year olds and I used to watch it as a kid when I’d feel sad or anxious
Hey Anthony I know this will get buried but I’ve never watched your videos, but I like what you said about this album. From one music nerd to another I am glad you are making these videos. Only one thing, On Tomorrow Never Knows the sitar noise is actually a reverse guitar solo. Harrison wrote the music he wanted, played it in reverse and then they played the tape backwards so that they could get that sitar noise but cleaner
@@henrydangelo4943 Eleanor Rigby and Got to Get You Into My Life also. (And Good Day Sunshine). The man was 24 years old. I always thought he was the composer of Yellow Submarine too, but the Super Deluxe Edition reveals it was actually a John Lennon song!
@@Spellchec We don’t really know because all we have is a demo. However it seems that John wrote the verse melody and then Paul wrote the verse lyrics. Then Paul combined that with his chorus
Just a note about your note at 1:23 : At the time the Beatles albums were released both in mono and stereo, but the recordings were made with mono in mind, that’s why the first stereo mix is that weird (and because there were only 4 individual tracks). So the 2009 version on Spotify isn’t a remix but a remaster of the original 1966 stereo mix
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact their singles Rain and Paperback Writer were included and remixed! I hadn't heard the songs before cuz I had never explored any of their singles, I was interested in what you had to say about their new mixes
5:00 I have a 1966 UK mono vinyl cut of this. It's one of the bassiest records I own and if anything I have to back it off on the amp. I also have an early 70s UK stereo, which definitely has less bass and better clarity. But I do like the punch of the original.
About ''Got to Get You Into My Life'', the ONE thing that I really wanted was for the drum to be louder, especially the fills (they're almost inaudible in the original mono mix). They're better now, but I feel like the track's dynamism and punchiness could benefit from louder drumfills.
The new mix of She Said She Said is so bad 😢 the rest is wonderful though. Fantano’s Beatles knowledge isn’t great but I’m always glad to see him cover them
Probably the only mix where I prefer the original stereo mix. Hell, the mono mix is better to me (and I usually avoid anything mono). Love You To is another example where I prefer the original as I think the double-tracked vocals fit the Hindu sound that Harrison was going for.
I don't like it at full volume. The guitars are so far apart it almost tickles my ears. Sounds rounder at lower volumes, you shouldn't really be listening max volumes anyway.
@@_PuppetMaster86 There’s no reason to doubt monophonic production when the album in question and time period it was released in had mono as the standard. There’s plenty of classic albums where mono is the way to go, like a good chunk of Bob Dylan and Rolling Stones albums are best heard in mono, it sounds more in your face, raucous & personal.
Not mentioned here but I think the best remix on the set is Rain (on the "EP"). Doesn't sound different at first, but when you A/B it again the previous stereo mix, it's a revelation. (Which I think is exactly what you want here -- not obviously different from what you know and love, until you actually check.) It sounds significantly clearer without losing the hazy trippy quality of it. I'm guessing that track originally may have suffered from whatever they did to the tape to slow it down and then combine it with the regular speed vocal take, or something, but it finally sounds as clear as you would want it to sound. One thing working against this set as a whole is that there are quite a few key songs that have already been remixed pretty well (Yellow Submarine, 1, etc.) That was also true of Sgt. Pepper but there was a lot more contention there with the differences between the stereo & mono versions. So it felt so great to finally have the full album in stereo and not botched. Whereas this one, it's definitely better, just not as exciting. I do disagree about Helter Skelter though. I always wanted something more from the original stereo mix, and I felt they finally nailed it with the new one. Finally hit as hard as I wanted it to.

I hadn't noticed the weird panning thing on Paul's voice in Eleanor Rigby before. Also the cellist is crushing it on there
I loved how dynamic the new mix made the entire album sound, but Tomorrow Never Knows was INCREDIBLE.
I love that they included a new mix for their hit song "It's Okay to Leave a Dog in a Hot Car" can't stop listening to it! 🎶 ❤️
That's their peak
Truly their magnum opus
The greatest Beatles song
Help! is still my favourite Beatles album.
I like how much fun you or your editor had with this video. It matches your energy for how much fun you had listening to this.
If you want another great remix of a classic album, I heavily recommend the new remix of Fresh Fruit for Rotten Vegetables by Dead Kennedys that Chris Lord-Algae did.
Another band who didnt make a bad album
Gotta disagree here actually, some of the tracks have their bass and guitar cranked up too much. Jello gets drowned out in a number of songs which is a total turn-off.
I was really impressed by it and I feel a lot of love for this album. It was the first Beatles album I heard on cassette in the early 2000s as child. My dad got the cd from the library and then put it on cassette tape. Then from 2009 they remastered all the albums and I was blown away. Always been a Beatlemaniac!
1:21 All Beatles albums that have a mono mix were simultaneously released in Mono and Stereo (maybe give or take a month), just until the last couple the Stereo mixing was done without The Beatles involvement.
except white album
Giles and team did a stunning job.
I love this new version of the album. This 2022 mixes are top notch. HOWEVER the original Mono version will always be King 👑
Yes, it was made to be mono and that's the best way the album has been mixed. Always.
Good to see the love of Beatles being honored, as long as there are ears to hear there will be fans of this band. Long live rock
So great to check all these great albums I overlooked so long. Revolver is a masterpiece.
I agree with your overview. It would be dope to hear your thoughts on the Pink Floyd - Animals remix that came out not too long ago.
wish you had remarked on the new mixes for paperback writer & rain too. some of their best singles from this era, & this redux really did them justice.
overall though i think this release was a great balance of respecting the original intentions of the engineers who did the first mixes while also providing some great balance with the stereo imaging. more pared back than the in-your-face modern re-imagining we saw in the last few super deluxe packages. much respect to peter jackson & the team who designed the crazy AI tech that made this possible.
i’ve been listening to this album since i was 5, & without any context, i always loved how dramatic the panning was.
It's really getting better all the time 🙏
Great review mate. The droning instrument on Tomorrow Never Knows is actually called a tanpura.
I love the new mix. For most songs I think they made it sound better.
Can't wait for a new "Rubber soul" mix!
I waited a full month for the remaster and was not disappointed
That’s crazy
That's crazy
EHEHEHEHEHEHEHEH
Wow that's crazy bro
Im gonaa say a funny word
That's crazy
Hi, Anthony.
Regarding the rhythm section you mentioned on For No One - it’s a double beat of the kick drum throughout. In the prior mixes this was nearly buried by Paul’s bass on the upbeat. Since 1966, I’ve never known about that. It really changes the dynamics as I hear it.
9:38 To be fair, Mono is the version the original production was made for.
3:49 this coupled with the new Paint music video rly tripped me out earlier and I just now realized it’s because of the new mix lol
Revolver my fave album in their catalog
The editor's note at 1:17 is wrong. Every Beatles album up to and including the White Album came out in mono AND stereo. The original 60s stereo mixes have been the "standard" versions of most of the albums pretty much since the end of the 60s, even though the mono versions were the standard ones IN the 60s. The new remixes aim to improve on those 60s stereo mixes, which had some quirks and limitations based on the technology of the time.
Tomorrow Never Knows still sounds like the future. One of the greatest albums ever.
Really great album. I'm still obsessed with it
I just recently got some decent headphones for the first time in my life, and listening to Eleanor Rigby and actually hearing the strings coming from all different directions is so incredible.
Fantano looking like Billy Shears himself with the mustache
fantabi is da real pol
For No One is one of the greatest songs ever made
0:12 missed the op to say “and everywhere” after that
The mono version is still the best for this album, but it's great that the stereo version is much better now compared to the original 60s stereo version
Hell yeah man
Giles Martin did a fantastic job with this and I'm interested to see if the technology he used can be used for other bands and artists
Finally, after 60 years, I can have an opinion on the mix of this record.
THE BEATLES ARE GETTING BETTER WITH TIME :)
The Candyman cometh.
Revolver is the best Beatles album, ever
R.I.P Takeoff, feel surprised Fantano didn't make a video addressing it but respect to the dead man regardless
Revolver was Paul McCartney's finest hour
What about Sgt. Pepper, he made that album the legend that it is
@@ead630 here there and everywhere + for no one are both a cut above any mccartney song from sgt peppers
Fantano + Beatles always ❤
Finally, my left ear can now appreciate the verses on Eleanor Rigby
I'm Only Sleeping sounds AMAZING!!!
You don't think the acoustic guitar is too low end soft in the new mix?
Great review! Just got my copy yesterday and no complaints here.
nice to see anthony getting an honestly nevermind shirt
Revolver is absolutely amazing excited to watch this
So when are we getting a Beatles tier-list/worst to best?
Just a note about your note at 1:23 :
At the time the Beatles albums were released both in mono and stereo, but the recordings were made with mono in mind, that’s why the first stereo mix is that weird (and because there were only 4 individual tracks). So the 2009 version on Spotify isn’t a remix but a remaster of the original 1966 stereo mix
Hopefully a Beatles tier list soon!
I never thought being able to separate those old masters into stereo would ever be possible. We are truly living in the future.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact their singles Rain and Paperback Writer were included and remixed! I hadn't heard the songs before cuz I had never explored any of their singles, I was interested in what you had to say about their new mixes
The only issue I have with this Remix, is that She Said doesn't have enough bass. The bass in the 09' mix is so good.
Finally a revolver video
5:00 I have a 1966 UK mono vinyl cut of this. It's one of the bassiest records I own and if anything I have to back it off on the amp. I also have an early 70s UK stereo, which definitely has less bass and better clarity. But I do like the punch of the original.
Strawberry fields has amazing drum fills from Ringo
Bro I'm so high and just hearing melon talking about the Beatles almost like they just dropped a brand new hot mixtape is WILD to me
About ''Got to Get You Into My Life'', the ONE thing that I really wanted was for the drum to be louder, especially the fills (they're almost inaudible in the original mono mix). They're better now, but I feel like the track's dynamism and punchiness could benefit from louder drumfills.
The song’s very horn centered so the drums being in the background i think serve it a bit more though i wouldn’t’ve minded them being more out there
The new mix of She Said She Said is so bad 😢 the rest is wonderful though. Fantano’s Beatles knowledge isn’t great but I’m always glad to see him cover them
Same with For No One
Probably the only mix where I prefer the original stereo mix. Hell, the mono mix is better to me (and I usually avoid anything mono). Love You To is another example where I prefer the original as I think the double-tracked vocals fit the Hindu sound that Harrison was going for.
the cymbols on the old stereo was so annoying dont know why you wanna ruin your ears with cymbol crashes every 2 seconds? new revolver is superior
It's getting better all the time
Tomorrow Never Knows stays the song oat
