    I think I mentioned that somewhere but if I didn't thanks for pointing that out! It's true, you need to make sure the disc is a bit closer to the black sensor receiver thingy but not so close that the disc is touching the sensor.
    I'm glad that the videos were helpful! Thanks!

    Great video and very informative, thanks! I am still using my G25 in 2020 after some years in the dust and when I dismantled it after seeing the symptoms you describe, you helped me confirm that the crack is not normal! :-) However for what it is worth, you can replace the disk (on the G25 at least) without removing half of what you did. Just remove the top cover and unplug the wired from the right of the PCB, you can then pinch the black cover and you have enough room to get it off on the right side... I used this to reassemble it after I received the part (I dismantled it completely initially)!

    Just did this myself, thanks for the vids. Works better than new. I will say though that you should mention in the comments about pushing the brass replacement closer to the black receiver. First time I put mine back together, it was too close to the light, and caused the wheel to stall during it's startup self-check (would only go 1/4 turn, tries 2 more times, gives up). And the closer you get it to the receiver, the crisper the FFB response. :)
    Cheers.

    Thanks for the video.
    I have replaced the Encoderwheel as well, but now the G25 ist not finishing the calibration. I think it is related to the gear rack centering that you mentioned at the end. Guess I will have to fiddle arroung a bit to get it alligned.
    Actually for replacing the encoder wheel, you do not need to unscrew the 4 inner bottom screws that hold the steering wheel gearbox. Then I think you wont have any problems with an not centered wheel.

    Thanks for the videos around this topic, i tried gluing mine and it was a tight fit until I pushed it in and it cracked complitely :) so I have placed an order and waiting for my brass one.

    Hi Mike, just recieved my brass encoder today. I owned a G25 where the plastic encoder actually broke in half. I managed to super glue it together, filed the rough edges and worked fine ever since. But I remember there was no need to strip so much of the wheel to get to the encoder like you illustrated. Anyway, I have a G27 with this darn issue now so thats why I went the brass option this time. This expensive logitech set brought down to its knees by this little crappy part, just wish they will fix it permanently.Thanks for the info, Ill be installing my new encoder tonight. Jaco

    @mikeschmeeedotcom  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    When I first replaced the encoder I had a similar issue and I quickly realized that the gear rack or whatever its called was not properly centered with the steering column gear. I took it apart again and just moved the blast plastic piece with all so its dead center with the wheel and everything was back to normal.
    Also check the encoder disc's position. It can't be touching the circuit board or sensors but it has to be kind of closer to the white sensor so it can be picked up.

    i've replaced the old encoder with a new metal one and its still not calibating, it does like a little movement when i plug it in and thats it . The light on the shifter keeps blinking, i've checked everything like 10 times, its all put together as it should be, so im guessing it cant read the encoder?

  • @mikeschmeeedotcom
    @mikeschmeeedotcom  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Make sure the new optical encoder disc is not touching either of the sensors that it sits between but make sure its a bit closer to the black sensor but once again make sure the disc is not touching the sensor at all. Also try putting the G27 back together without the top part of the case to make sure the optical disc is spinning. And also make sure that the black plastic piece that aligns with steering wheel column is dead center. If its slighting out of alignment you'll get a blinking light.

    Awesome video. Hopefully you can help me out with a specific question I have. Do you glue the brass wheel in place or will it stay on its own? I ask because aside from cracks I've read of wheel slippage too.
    I should be getting my brass wheel any day so just wondering if it needs glue. Thanks!

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it does not need glue. It slides right on just like the original plastic disc. Make sure you space it out correctly so that it does not touch the two infrared sensors. Try to center the disc as well as possible.

      Ok thanks a lot for the quick response..you mean in the center of the opening of the board that goes over top of it? Also has yours held up fine since doing this or any other issues?

    Hey man. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix lack of power/no calibration. The sequential shift light is on when I start my pc up (left side of dpad) but the power light (right side) has gone from being fully light up to a really dim faded light and the pc regonises the wheel but doesn't calibrate and there's no Force Feedback.

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not really too sure. Try opening the Logitech and see if there is any loose connecting somewhere? Maybe you just need to replace the A/C adapter? I haven't run into any power failure issues yet. Sorry

    Hi Mike,
    I just followed all your video to replace the disk, however I found out that it was not cracked. I did change the power supplie and it seems that was the problem. Now when I mounted back the wheel, I did what you showed on the video, but the wheel turns one side but stop and the green light is blinking. I try to re align the plastic bar with the steering wheel but I still have the same issue, I checked the disk to see if it rotates properly end everything seems OK. How can we make sure the aligment is OK between the steering wheel and the bar with teeths?

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jean Pierre St Louis
      Find the center of the bar with the teeth. Count the teeth if you have to and divide by two to locate the exact center.
      If you removed the disc, make sure it is in the center as well so both sensors can read the discs.
      I don't know what else it could be. I'm truly sorry for not being able to provide more help.

    Bought the encoder and put it into my g27. Now the power light blinks and it won't calibrate at all... all of the buttons still work though. I have had the wheel apart before and it weas fine, so I can't figure out what is going on this time around.

    Hey Mike, do you have any suggestions about the overheating problem of the logitech. Yesterday I played WRC4 for the first time and after an hour of playing i got some smoke comming from the left side of the wheel and quickly turned it off. Today I got back to rFactor and everything was working perfectly. The thing is that i feel more FFB in rFactor than in WRC4 but my wheel stays cool while playing rFactor, any thoughts about this?

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not too sure. Perhaps some circuitry of the electric motors within the Logitech fried? I remember I had some something similar but not exactly the same. I was playing GT5 and I smelled something burning but there was no smoke. A few weeks later the wheel no longer functioned and my optical encoder disc was cracked. Perhaps you can find some more information regarding your issue on Logitech and dedicated racing simulator gaming forums?
      Sorry I couldn't be of much help.
      Goodluck!

      hey guys i had this problem. after the last few months i could smell smoke from my g25 which would come and go, then today it died with a glitchy alignment issue so i pulled it apart to assess the encoder, which had tiny cracks starting but no obvious problem yet so i put it back together after wriggling a few wires etc hoping for the best lol, and started it up with the case off and a puff of smoke came from inside the right motor (the non encoder one). i would say the brushes have worn. possible encoder issue aswell. i am now in the hunt for new motors and have a brass wheel ordered. thanks for the vid and the links they were both useful

    thanks for the video man. I have a question. does the encoder disc have to go on the motor in any certain way. whe taking off the circuit board, the disc was so cracked that it slipped right off. So if it lines up a certain way, i have no way of knowing now.

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not too sure how to explain it as I'm not good with words. It's one of those things where I would have to show you instead of explaining it in writing. I know the video is horrible quality due to an old GoPro camera and terrible angles plus you can't clearly see how the disc gets put on so I apologize for that. The brass encoder is a disc and cylinder in one piece. Make sure the cylinder goes facing down onto the silver pin and the disc will kind of go through the slot on the tiny circuit board.
      I hope that makes sense and I'm sorry if it doesn't. Like I said, I'm not good at explaining things.

    • @Jok3sta
      @Jok3sta 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok so as long as it's in the slit of the circuit board and not touching anything its good to go right.. thanks for the reply man. Mine cracked in two places which I'm assuming is the reason my wheel doesn't work at all. It sucks the only place I can get one is from Thailand. .

    • @mikeschmeeedotcom
      @mikeschmeeedotcom  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gregory Latty Yes, it should be all good as long as the disc is in between the little opening of the circuit board and not touching anything while its spinning.

    No need to apply glue as you install the encoder wheel on the motor shaft?

  • @Krongorka
    @Krongorka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have changed the optical encoder, but when I power up the wheel calibration doesn't work properly - 2 full rotations without the final one. The power light is blinking.

    • @Krongorka
      @Krongorka 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, after few tries the calibration procedure is complete, but the wheel is slightly off-centered to the right side.

  • @edmanrapperu
    @edmanrapperu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Mine calibrates correctly but goes like 30 degrees of center after playing for a bit. I'll open it up and see what's wrong, I hope the disc is still fine because 38 euros is a bit exorbitant for a little brass disc.
    Thanks for the videos.

    Hi Mike,
    I've been doing all steps of your video but i didn't manage to make it work.
    problem is same as the 90% of people, the wheel isn't calibrating properly, I really tried to make it dead center but I seriously didn't achieve anything at all.
    Plus I would like to know where has to steering column has to point.

      Carlos Martín I'm so sorry but I'm not too sure what to do. I would have to see it in person and do some trial and error like you have. Perhaps I was lucky and my logitech G25 was not that badly broken as others may have reported. Maybe something is loose or not aligned correctly or maybe the sensors are not reading the new encoder disc? I really don't know at this point. I'm so sorry I cannot help any further.

    Where can i get optical wheel for normal price, not that insane price i see it at repair services?
    I saw a crack on my own g25 optical wheel. And steering wheel calibrates from 2-3 attempt from tome to time. But i still can play LFS and rFactor with no problem but feels like not for so long. It gonna die soon...
    SimRace camarades, help me whit some info please, i digged out google but all i found is one offer at eBay that (with shipping) costs to me as a wing of a Boeing airplane lol
    Damn that industry is so overpriced! I sad for that day when i dropped to trash the whole box of old ball-mouses, about 30, and parts from different manufacturers as IBM, Genius, Logitech, A4 Tech etc.. I clearly remember that some of those whells were look like exactly like this one but maybe with different inner diameter. damn

      Sounds like some type of alignment issue. May you please elaborate? When I took my G25 apart and didn't align the little bar that has "teeth" on it with the steering wheel column. I took it apart again and made sure that part was dead center. The wheel was working fine after that.Let me know, I'll try to help as much as I can.
