7:00 minutes in video, plug-in power is not for connecting usb but is for mic/line input jack which is in X/Y capsule. This input is used for using lav or external mic and plug-in power power can be used to power this mic 2.4 v. Page 8 and page 88 of Zoom H6 manual
I've had one of these for a couple of months to record my podcast. I hate to admit this, but I just bought a new condenser mic and was having so many issues with how quiet it was and end up buying a cloud lifter to get it back up without distorting it with increasing the gain. Literally 3 minutes in to this video when you were talking about the -20 db switch I looked at my recorder and I had that turned on on my mic and switching that off fixed my issue and now I can return the cloud lifter that I don't need yet. Thank you for saving me $150!
Excellent walk through. I just ordered one, now that the price is even less than the H4 (under $200!). But to get that price down, lots of accessories no longer come with it. Just the quality sound of the stereo mics alone, on the H4, are worth the price of the whole unit. And I hear the H6 is even better. 👍
Bought the H6 in 2018, it was so daunting to try to understand at that I've only just now took it out again, and thanks to your amazing tutorial, I now know how to use it! Thank you!
This is by far the best tutorial for a product I haven't bought yet but will definitely consider more to buy after watching the whole video! Thank you for making it's so easy to understand for a guy who have never touched an audio device before!
i guess im asking the wrong place but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account? I stupidly lost the password. I love any tips you can give me.
@Zahir Emiliano I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and im in the hacking process now. Seems to take a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Great vid! I would add that you might want to change the sample rate to 48khz if you're going to use your recordings for video, it's the most commun standard for video as far as I know... Thanks for sharing!
I'm at the very moment when I'm just starting to gather information about a video podcast. I need two medium quality microphones for starters, 2 pairs of headphones I have from sennheiser and a camera to film full hd on sd card 45 minutes or maximum one hour. My question is if I could use the BM 800 Condenser microphone with Zoom h6 input to get quality sound and the h6 zoom output at the microphone input in a camcorder? Thank you
Brilliant and simple walkthrough. Thank you very much. Which is the best mic attachment to use for a one-on-one interview? Say you were speaking to a football manager after the game. And also, do I need to adjust Lo Cut or Comp/Limiter to help reduce background noise? Cheers
Hi, I just watched your video, thank you very much. I was wondering if I can use a lavalier with the zoomH6. I usually make blog videos, I just moved to zoom h6 so Im looking for the best option for recording.
Thanks for watching! That totally depends on the lavalier. You'll need to know what kind of voltage the lav mic takes, so that you can plug it in without damaging it. If it's typical +48v like phantom power, you can connect it using the 1/8" jack on that XY mic at the top of the H6. If it's lower than 48, you'll need to A) get a 1/8" to XLR adapter (amzn.to/2YZvaO9) and B) change the voltage on the input you're using to match the lav mic (either 12 or 24) by going to Menu > Input & Output > Phantom > On (to turn it on) and also Voltage to set the correct voltage level. Good luck!
Could you go into more detail of what the "Pad 0 to -20" actually does? I thought it gave a boost so that I wouldn't need a cloudlifter but from watching your video what I am understanding it is more of a limiter. Which if you have a hot microphone or instrument it limits it so it doesn't keep peaking. I just want to make sure I understand what the Pad does.
At 7:00 you described the “plug-in power” as selecting batteries or external power through the mini USB plug. I don’t think that is correct. I believe plug-in power is something you may need if you are using a lav mic through the XY mic connector. Lav mics usually need low voltage...plug-in power.
Art Johnson I agree, there is confusion between USB power and ''PLUG in '' power. older cheapo mics used that,, about 1.5 volts ,, Can't seem to get him to understand the difference.
Thank you so much for making this. I am curious - if recording an interview with other people, do you recommend that they be wearing headphones to monitor the recording or just the podcast host? I've been wondering if I should get a splitter for the headphone jack. I'm guessing they will be curious how they are sounding? I don't know though!
Thanks for the video! At 8:07 time line, you say Rec Format quality standard is 44.1 @ 16 bit. Is this the ideal setting for recording voice for podcasting? Or is it also the ideal setting for all types of recordings as well?
The standard for podcasting by now is 48 kHz @ 24 Bit. This is what software like auphonic or other services work the best with. So if you have the possibility: Use this recording settings
Depends on the interface, every interface has different internal preamps which have different native gain levels, so you might have cleaner or noisier inputs on an interface. Like I said they're all different, so you'd have to test them. The H6 is great because the inputs are very clean
Excellent for recording. I got mine 4 yrs ago. Is there a way i can put a downloaded mp3s or wav files in one of the tracks so that I can play guitar and mp3 backing tracks at the same time?
Thanks for the video. I'm trying to connect the Ronalds CS-10EM binaural headphones. I placed the red 3.5 mm minijakc on the Y connector (2 normal output jacks) to record each channel separately and put the black on the headphones. In this way, I hear a background noise that increases when I increase the gain. Phantom is connected and configured with 12 V because they are condenser microphones. I do not know how to eliminate this noise. I need to record with these headphones. Any information will be useful. Thank you.
Connect CS10-EM straight to the 3.5mm jack located on the side of the x/y-microphone capsule and switch plugin power on in the menu system. You can see it in the menu system at about 6:10 of the video.
thank you for this walk through! let's say i have four mics plugged in and ready to record, where would i plug in each of their headphones to the mics? (as mentioned around 11:50)...would i have to plug in each person's headphones and test them individually?
Thank you for sharing. In my experience with the zoom h6, the Monitoring Mix is very useful in both play back and recording volume. Usually I set the levels at about 6.5dBm and will do amazing job. Otherwise, the production sound quality seems so flat.
I am considering using this to vlog. I'd like to hide the wires as much as possible. How would you recommend a person uses the H6 in that way? Also when you host a podcast (another project) and it's you and one or two more people what attachments do you use? Thanks!
Do you happen to know how I would able to connect my iPhone to play music/audio and record it directly to the memory card. while aslo using XLR mics for a podcast?
tedjonesworld you can plug in a normal AUX cord into the XY attachment. Or, you can plug a 1/8 to 1/4 into one of the 4 XLR inputs, but the 1/4” end of the connection MUST be mono. Or the Zoom won’t read it properly
Is there any way possible that I can connect my phone to the H6 to accept phone calls during a recording of a podcast? Thanks from 3 Guys with Small Mics
Use a 1/8" male to 1/8" male cord and connect it to the line out! From there, you can assign the line out to a track. That, or you can use a 1/8" male to 1/4" male cord and plug the 1/4" into one of the 4 inputs. Hope this helps!
Is red button is smooth as compare to other buttons. I'm asking because, When you press other buttons, It sounds little bit but red button don't. I want to confirm, is there any problem with mine or is it same for all.
Do i HAVE To use batteries when using this as an audio interface? I am using Logic Pro X on mac. If i use my computers USB for power, will there be a lag?
What if i wanted to hear the sound of the voice to test whether or not they are speaking loud enough? Or can that be done afterwards with the saved file?
Thanks this was great! If you were doing a podcast with 4 mics (4 people) what do you suggest as the most efficient way to set them up with headphones? I was looking into using headsets for convenience purposes but not sure if I'd need another piece of equipment to make that work.

Have you ever had an issue trying to use the H6 as an Audio Interface in Multi-Track mode? I tried to and Skype and my DAW Reaper saw it as an option but no sound came through.
@@beccahammond I was able to figure it out when it comes to Skype you need to be in Stereo Mix not Multi-track. The DAW the challenge is that I didn't know is the input in Reaper starts at 3,4,5,6 for the XLR inputs on 1,2 which I assumed it was.
I just purchased one of these and have it set up and ready to go. Problem is when I push record I get a message that says "Invalid SD card". The card is new. It is a SanDisk Extreme PRO, 95 MB/s 64GB. Somebody please help me!!!
Did you format the card? Another comment mentioned it & said when the card is formatted it created a ten ‘project folders’. Maybe if not formatted the sound from zoom has nowhere to save on the card. I could be wrong. But if not then cool. Good luck 🍀
Thanks man. If I set it up for battery use for power yet still have it plugged in, will it automatically feed off of plugged in power once the batteries die during recording?
8:07 you should ALWAYS record with 48 kHz @ 24 Bit if you're recording a podcast. It's the best sound quality without creating extremely large raw footage, and every software and service like auphonic will work best with these settings. Also if you use StudioLink or however work with other podcasters, 48 kHz 24 Bit is the standard that the podcasting community mostly has a consent in.
@@thepodcastmasters OK, then maybe standard isn't the right term, because different things have different standards. But 48 @ 24 is the setting that I would highly recommend, because you will have the least compatibility and desynchronization problems with all these different software and services. My recording software requires this setting, StudioLink uses it and if you want to merge recordings from different sources into one project, you can stay away from much trouble if settings are always the same. And the actual space you save isn't too much, especially nowadays where hard drive space is cheaper than ever.
The 1/8" input is on the side of the XY mic - I may have skipped it in this video but there is a more current setup video here: th-cam.com/video/CE4JP-6Tp4Q/w-d-xo.html
when recording using two mics I get two wav files once uploaded to my mac, one I sound clear and the guest does not on the other wav file its reversed. What am I doing wrong?
@@SirBamBam404 If you don't have either of those mic attachments plugged in, the H6 won't even let you turn on the L/R record enable buttons. Phantom power is a totally different thing
can i ask a recording formate question my zoom seem to create a new recording file n move it to a new folder each time example i have 10 files in 10 different folder how do i set it so all my files are in 1 folder
Dealing With My Grief is correct, when you format the SD card the device will automatically create 10 project folders, then gradually save your new recordings into them
@@thepodcastmasters why are you saying that? I am looking to bring phone callers for my YT channel and been looking for a simple/easy way of doing it and was looking at the h6. Why do you think the rode is better?
It has more functionality and it’s easier to use. And it all comes in the box - you don’t need any adapters or extras to make it worth. Bluetooth connectivity. It’s amazing.
I get this question a lot - but I don't like providing you with a specific gain setting. Every situation is different so you'll need to take it case by case. As a guideline, keep an eye on the monitor control on the H6 and you'll want to keep your levels hitting about -10 for the majority of the time.
@@AdamBuckmantechpad1642 I wouldn't use the xy for podcast. Use the mid-side if you must. Even better, use the shotgun. An XLR would be optimal, assuming its of a higher quality.
Thank you for the help in setting up my H6. I just bough tit for my new podcast program, Civil Defense Radio, and didn't quite know how to set everything up. Your video was clear and concise so even a non-techy like me could understand. Thanks again.
Great video!! Well explained. I just bought the H6. Seems easier to use than the Tascam. Is there a splitter you would recommend for 4 headsets? Thanks
Could you please tell your audience how to retrieve the file they just recorded? You end this video with actually showing how the Zoom records but then you don't say how to access the file.
By default Zoom creates folders on the SD card. Load the card into your computer and "H6_SD" will appear as an external disk. Under "FOLDER 01" you will see all your recording files
It's not a "charge cable"....there's nothing to charge....it's a power cable to provide power instead of the batteries...the recommended batteries are not the rechargeable type.

Thanks for this awesome walkthrough! Just ordered one of these!
Do you have a way of plugging in 4 headphones for a podcast if so please let me know
Hi - you gotta get a headphone amplifier with 4 channels. :)
So there is no mic-in like for video mic ntg?
The 1/8" input is on the side of the XY mic - I may have skipped it in this video but there is a more current setup video here: th-cam.com/video/CE4JP-6Tp4Q/w-d-xo.html
the zoom is too expensive for me, is there an alternative to it? for podcasting with a 4 person set up
Nothing that I could personally recommend, sorry
Do you know if you can record, and use the interface at the same time?
If you’re using it as an interface that means you’d be recording into whatever DAW you’re using. Not onto the H6
Is it hard to use
when recording using two mics I get two wav files once uploaded to my mac, one I sound clear and the guest does not on the other wav file its reversed. What am I doing wrong?
one of your mic’s is incorrectly setup for the situation
Sounds like you're multitracking. One track per microphone.
I think "Back Up" is very important.
What is the mic you used with Track 4?
I can't remember, but either the SM58 or ATR-2100
what about the left and right when do you need to have those lit whats the difference
That refers to the attachable mics on the top of the H6
@@thepodcastmasters so if I have a phantom mic connected just leave them off
@@SirBamBam404 If you don't have either of those mic attachments plugged in, the H6 won't even let you turn on the L/R record enable buttons. Phantom power is a totally different thing
can i ask a recording formate question
my zoom seem to create a new recording file n move it to a new folder each time
example i have 10 files in 10 different folder
how do i set it so all my files are in 1 folder
every time you hit record, it will create a new folder inside the project folder. That is by design.
Dealing With My Grief is correct, when you format the SD card the device will automatically create 10 project folders, then gradually save your new recordings into them
Does the SD card save multitracked files (WAV, etc.) or just a single file?
The SD card will indeed multitrack record for all the inputs that you are using
Thank you so much for this excellent tutorial
You're very welcome!
i want a connect my phone into h6 what is that cable call ?
1/8” TRS to 1/4” TS - the 1/4” end HAS to be a TS (mono) to be picked up properly.
Would you recommend this for a 1st time podcaster
Not anymore - I’ve started recommending the RODEcaster
@@thepodcastmasters why are you saying that? I am looking to bring phone callers for my YT channel and been looking for a simple/easy way of doing it and was looking at the h6. Why do you think the rode is better?
It has more functionality and it’s easier to use. And it all comes in the box - you don’t need any adapters or extras to make it worth. Bluetooth connectivity. It’s amazing.
Thanks for this, pretty basic, but that's what I needed to get going!
So , how is it's podcasting quality like?
Anyone who owns it can enlighten me.
The preamps are great
What did you find was the best gain setting to use when using the xy mic
I get this question a lot - but I don't like providing you with a specific gain setting. Every situation is different so you'll need to take it case by case. As a guideline, keep an eye on the monitor control on the H6 and you'll want to keep your levels hitting about -10 for the majority of the time.
how good is the xy mic that comes with can I use just the xy mic for a good podcast or would I need to spend money on a xlr mic
You def want some XLR mics because the XY’s are condensers, and not ideal for vocal recording. They’re intended for room/concert recordings
@@AdamBuckmantechpad1642 I wouldn't use the xy for podcast. Use the mid-side if you must. Even better, use the shotgun. An XLR would be optimal, assuming its of a higher quality.
You're definitely right about them headphones... I packed everything but the damn headphones. Lol
Very helpful. Thanks!
What type of mic are you using to record this video with ?
atr-2100
Great walkthrough, how does this compare to Olympus LS100 when podcasting?
Thank you for the help in setting up my H6. I just bough tit for my new podcast program, Civil Defense Radio, and didn't quite know how to set everything up. Your video was clear and concise so even a non-techy like me could understand. Thanks again.
Great video!! Well explained. I just bought the H6. Seems easier to use than the Tascam. Is there a splitter you would recommend for 4 headsets? Thanks
THANK YOU
Really good video helped a lot
Could you please tell your audience how to retrieve the file they just recorded? You end this video with actually showing how the Zoom records but then you don't say how to access the file.
By default Zoom creates folders on the SD card. Load the card into your computer and "H6_SD" will appear as an external disk. Under "FOLDER 01" you will see all your recording files
@@thepodcastmasters OK. Thanks!
Great tutorial, thank you.
do you know how to link two tracks?
push the two record-enable buttons at the same time
Thank you for your help with this. I just got my Zoom H6 and feel like I can use it now. :)
Wonderful Review!
Thank you, helped a lot!
Great!
Thanks so much! God bless!
It's not a "charge cable"....there's nothing to charge....it's a power cable to provide power instead of the batteries...the recommended batteries are not the rechargeable type.
I use rechargeable AA batteries. I just charge them separately.
Great run through. Thanks so much! Buying mine tomorrow in like-new condition for $150.00. So excited!
Thanks! Have fun with the new H6
Very helpful! Dankeschön for sharing!
Excellent explanation, thank you so much!
