Amazing game no doubt.
I enjoyed a few shmups as a kid & teen, but never really got into them; so I wasn't exposed to a ton of them. Now with the power of retro and emulation I can go back and really have fun with so many GEMS I missed growing up.
I just ordered Natsuki Chronicles. Couldn't resist after seeing your recommendation. Thank you 4 all your content, but especially this one. I collect more shooters than any other genre. Peace out.
hey this one is actually available digitally on the xbox store right now. cool. so few of the best shmups seem to be available this way. and i don't want to hunt down and buy expensive physical copies of japanese games or otherwise rare/expensive/hard to find physical games from the 360 gen. as sad as it might sound, StarForce Reloaded is what got me into shmups. love that game.
I think Skyforce Reloaded [as well as Skyforce Anniversary] have some of the best leveling and progression of a shmup in years. I put so many hours into Skyforce Reloaded just to grind and level up my ship which I am surprised other shmups don't copy the idea. To progress through the game and accumulate currency has such an addicting replay loop. It's an awesome shmup in my opinion.
Sky force is a nice game but they almost unable to be compared to a traditional shooter, they are so much different to be polite
@@dingo535 what is so different about them? Aircrafts? Check. Guns/blasters/missiles? Check. Enemies that come in waves/patterns? Check. Missions that have objectives? Check.
If it's a slower pace than what you prefer that is fine I can understand that isn't for everyone. But I don't get what makes it "different"? If by different you mean "good" or "fun" than I agree 100%.
I love the Sky force games, great coop fun too, wish they get physical releases for the Nintendo Switch

I have to recommend both ESP Ra De and Ketsui Deathtiny, 2 of the best shmups of all time ported to modern consoles by M2 Shot Triggers (Ketsui is only PS4 though). Been seriously addicted to ESP Ra De lately, it's the first time I've gotten into the scoring aspect of a shmup while grinding for the 1cc
I literally started Deathtiny a few days ago on PS5 and it is so awesome! That and Deathsmiles have been recent faves.
I got into rade a bit but for the 351P, so a tiny screen and not the best controls, and am enjoying it. Haven't learnt the scoring system yet but just in terms of graphics it's pretty cool.

I love Andro Dunos 2 lovely pixel art and the weapon power up system is very fun. Looks SO GOOD on a CRT believe it or not.
Sturmwind EX is a decent game but it’s definitely a euro shmup and pretty jank.
Sounds great on CRT, i only used the scan lines when playing it to simulate it, and yes i totally love Andro Dunos 2, enjoyed the hell out of it on the Switch, this conversations is getting me the Andro Dunos 2 itch again i think i might have to play one more run right now haha

Drainus looks awesome! I would also recommend Darius Gaiden and G-Darius. They're both pretty hard but they're also loads of fun.

Got Caladrius Blaze, Sophstar and Andro Dunis II during the Steam SHMUP sale.
Haven't really played any for more than 20 years at one of my family members's old PC when we visited. Can't remember the name, but I absolutely had a blast back then.
Good topic today. I've gotten back on a shmup kick lately with Andro Dunos 2, blazing star...Ive had my eye on Drainus for a while but just couldn't pull the trigger. I think I will today
never played any modern shmups didnt know they still made em i still play the hell outta my pc engine

Keep playing Ginga Force. It is a long term game unlike a lot of shooters. You need to earn money and upgrade your weapons etc to start to feel more powerful. It is my favourite shooter on 360 and maybe ever.
Awesome video dude! I love shoot em ups. Twin Bee series is badass, love the PS1 game. Great list. I'd like to give an honorable mention to Dangun Feveron. One of my favs!
Here's your list with some editorial from me that can found on Steam:
Drainus: I haven't played it yet.
Mushihimesama: I fell in love with this game within seconds of playing it. The movement of everything was the perfect pace of fast enough to be interesting, but slow enough to pick my route.
DoDonPatchi Resurrection 1.5: Probably my favorite shmup of all time. Cave just knew exactly what sort of things players like me value in a shooter. And that's before getting into scoring mechanics. I'm a survival, the fewest credit clear (goal of 1cc) type player. And DoDonPachi was the first 1cc (on Novice, the extra bosses on normal force a 3cc from me) I earned in a bullet hell.
Ginga Force: I wasn't very impressed by this game. And when I played the companion game, Natsuki Chronicles; I was even less impressed. It's a good game, but held back in too many ways from being great.
Andro Dunos II: I haven't played it yet.
Death Smiles: I have played it yet.
Strumwind EX: I've only played it a couple of times, and I found it solid. But nothing has grabbed me about it. So, I haven't returned to play more just yet.
Horgihugh: I didn't even have this on my Steam wishlist yet.
SophStar: This is my current jam. Probably top 10 shooter for me. I've played through the whole game with my favorite ships. Now, I'm going through with other ships. I like shooters with simple 'gimmicks'. With SohpStar that comes from the large choice of ships and how they work. As well as the teleport, which I would prefer not being in the game (again, I like simple shooters). Since I always have to wonder if I am making the best use of teleporting.
Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid: Also wasn't on my Steam wishlist. I'm not much for cute 'em ups. So they tend to get overlooked by me unless they come highly recommended. On Steam, this game looks to be pretty pricey, too.
Natsuki Chronicles: As much as I didn't care for Ginga Force, I liked Natsuki Chronicles. Which is funny. I usually prefer vertical scrolling to horizontal, but Natsuki Chronicles ironed out most of the issues I had with Ginga Force. This creates a much better play experience for me.
Twinkle Star Sprites: I haven't played it yet.
R-type Final 2: I haven't played it yet. Leaned more toward Konami shooters (Gradius) over R-Type back in the day.
G Darius HD: I haven't played it yet. I have played DariusBurst Chronicle Saviors. And it's my most played shmup on Steam. I'm a sucker for the bare-bones story mode and unlocking ships from previous Darius games. Though, I'll admit it isn't as good as Darius Gaiden, my favorite of the Darius series.
Pocky and Rocky Reshrined: I haven't played it yet. I have played the original Kiki Kaikai arcade game, and this looks to be pretty much the same game with much better graphics. It's hard to tell if the game play has been refined by looking at it. I can say that Kiki Kaikai was hard as nails.
Caladrius Blaze: I haven't played it yet.
Cotton Reboot: I haven't played it yet.

I love this video!!! I’ve been getting into shmups via the cotton games. Primarily play RPGs but I’m looking for something different. RPGs can be long and tedious at times so if I can find shorter games to fit my busy schedule that’s always a plus

Really enjoyed the video. I'm glad Twinbee Yahho! made the list. I wish Konami would remaster the Twinbee collection on the PSP and release it for modern consoles. While I'm at it, I might as well wish for a Parodius remastered collection as well.

I learned the Japanese alphabets in 2008 when I knew I’d be going there for work a lot. Then I lived there from 2016-2022.
I recommend Human Japan, an app that has animation, voiceover and scoring.
Maybe once you learn the characters, you’ll keep learning. But unlike English, once you know the sounds you’ll pronounce almost everything correctly.

Great video. Just wanted to note, the slowdown in DoDonPachi and many other bullet hell shooters is completely intentional.
I got into shmups after my depression phase. At the moment I am playing a shmup which is a runner then transitions to a space invaders style where you tackle a number of stages. Each stage gets you a power up...there's 11 stages; 10 each stage with 3 mid bosses and a final boss stage. Except instead of planes...you have...Running Cats. It is called Kinja Run. I got gameplays so far. It is a niche game that's made in 2022.
Demon throttle is awesome! I played it on loop until I finally got beat it! I pre-ordered it on Amazon highly recommended
Good list. Andro dunos 2 is the type of shmups i like the most. R-type delta, R-type final, Thunder force 4 and Einhänder is my personal top pick of shmups.
I really wish Drainus had a physical release for PS4. I dont buy digital games anymore.. if I cant find something physical, then i dont ever buy it. Maybe make a video for your top shmups for physical releases? :) Id love that!

The way the Drainus ship faces us and moves should recall us something Reggie. Its Ryu! They did the same impressive, huge frontal animation with a ship.

My favorite genre. The thing about shooters is so many of them I go back and play on and off again over and over through the years.
I still buy most shooters if the grafx remind me of old school pixel art from Genesis, SNES, Saturn, or Dreamcast era. Even though I don't have the hand fast twitch Reflexes I used to have. Getting older sucks. Lol I still buy them just for the beautiful grafx.

I was about to buy them both actually, 1press is also releasing crimson clover that I had added to the order... BUT... they have such bad rep that in the end I did not risk it. Drainus is good, but it's a bit too long and too layered with upgrade systems and stuff for me to really rank it high. But that's just because I prefer short 1CCs with maximum replay value. But I still love Drainus! Team Ladybug is one of my favorite indie devs these days.

Darius Cozmic Collection Arcade has the Sega Genesis versions of Darius Sagaia and Darius Gaiden i have it digitally along with G-Darius HD Dariusburst CS Core + Taito/Sega Pack and Dariusburst: Another Chronicle EX+ i have 196 digital shoot em ups and 2 physical Raiden 3 and Raiden IV

Mushihimesama (Mushi-Hime-Sama) Mushi means Bug, Hime-Sama means Princess. Bug-Princess is the name of this game.
Drainus was great, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Cool idea, lots of upgrades and a neat story. It's a very VERY easy shmup though. I don't think that's a downside by any means but this game from start to finish took me maybe an hour or 2 with a few replayed stages for some upgrades. There are some nice bonus unlocks though that solve that difficulty issue post game though so for the challenge seekers, it is there just not at first glance.

Definitely try Skyforce Anniversary, and the Vasara Collection. It also has Dariusbrust CS, Resogun, Gandemonium, and crazy lots more if you have it modded

every time i try to find a good shmup to play on my current gen xbox's (series x, s), i go to youtube and learn about games that are not on the xbox store. i do not wish to hunt down or spend a lot on physical copies of japanese games. i wish someone would make a list of the best shmups that are currently available to buy digitally on the xbox store. i have been hunting and there are actually quite a few shmups on the store right now, but i have no idea which ones are actually good.

I've been an R-Type fan since I was a kid, but I was actually disappointed by R-Type Final 2. Game just feels super slow, like trying to play a game meant to look like late '80s CGI. Weird pacing in the levels. Front end menus are clunky, too. Wish it'd been much more arcade-like, tbh.
Crazy thing about Andro Dunos 2 for 3DS. I pre-ordered within 1 hour of the window. My copy is #138 of 6000. Keeping it sealed.
R-Type Final 2 is a stutter fest on PC. Drainus rocks.
