    This was a fantastic video dude. It takes a lot out of a person to make a video this long and of this caliber and it totally paid off. The video was obviously made with a lot of love for the PC Engine (which I do know from your previous videos lol) and is a great tool for people to learn more about much more obscure games on the PC Engine that don't have a lot of good coverage. The fact that you even had the gull to play through all of these games is crazy enough but this video is just absolute S Tier in my opinion. You've easily become one of my new favorite TH-camrs and I can't to see what great stuff you have in store in the future!

    Junkie, only you are insanely dedicated enough to do a 3-hour-plus video about every single PC Engine shooter, but that makes you a mothertruckin' legend in my book, and one can't help but love you for it. Not only did I agree with everything you said about the shmups I knew about, but I learned so much about shooters I didn't know about. Such an awesome, entertaining, and enlightening video! My only regret is that I wasn't able to watch this when it was live, but this is one I can see myself coming back to in the future.

    Fantastic video...thank you so much! As a SNES fan, it's quite shocking how the PCE was able to throw around so many enemies and bullets with little to no slowdown,years earlier.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The SNES devs got their act together too after the initial batch of disappointing games in terms of performance, at least with shooters. But the PCE certainly kicked ass when it came to that. I didn't mind the early hucard games flicker either. But with the SuperCD the system really came into it's own and showed off what it could do.

    I played shmups on various consoles throughout my childhood, many on the Atari 2600 (e.g. River Raid), Amiga, Master System (Fantasy Zone 1 and 2, R-Type among them) and the NES (Life Force!). When I got older, I started focusing on other types of games. After so many years, my tastes in gaming are changing and I want to experience all the tons of good shmups I haven't yet experienced. Your channel seems to be the perfect starting point to orient myself and help rekindle my interest, I appreciate what you do and how thoroughly you do it!

Just enjoy checking out what looks interesting to you and I'm sure you'll come across some you may not have thought about trying. I still play all sorts of genres and games myself as well, but I never stopped gravitating toward arcade style action games and platformers along with shmups.

      Had it been two players yeah, I may have even given it an A+. The one negative mark to an otherwise really cool port. It trounces the MD cart in most areas aside from lacking that. Which is odd as it was usually the PCE that had all the 2 player modes intact. And FW is definitely a good game to play with a friend.

    This was massive and entertaining, if you plan on covering all shoot-em-ups for the Genesis, SNES, Saturn, PS1, DC and PS2, I believe your channel will explode, as videos like these require not only serious effort, but someone that is familiar with the material covered. I'm not a shump veteran by any means, but I'm trying to beat Twin Cobra on the Genesis from time to time and there's always a part where it's hard to get through due to horrible checkpoints. That game brought its arcade coin-eater roots like many others. Raiden on the arcade? I can only see it beaten by two friends playing as that one is HARD for me.
    I just subscribed because this video shown how committed you are to this.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dude, Genesis Twin Cobra is brutal! It's as hard as the arcade in many ways they really pulled no punches. I've only finished it once myself. The new M2 collection has custom modes to tailor the game, at least the arcade versions, to suit your preference making it a bit more manageable but still extremely fun. They released it a while back and are working on the other Toaplan games next. And thank you for the kind words. This video is doing really well so far, so I do intend to cover the Mega Drive and Saturn next and go from there! So look for those coming in 2022. But if you're a fan of Twin Cobra and Toaplan, don't miss my huge announcement coming in just one more day on a premiere that's scheduled. I also did a dedicated video a while back to the Tiger/Twin Cobra series with some really great history. If you like that series you would really enjoy it.

    • @roberto1519
      @roberto1519 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      While I'm not exactly a shump junkie, I really like a good game, be that a sports title, fighting, racing, shump, platform, FPS, whatever, it's like music, if it's good to your ears, why not enjoy it?
      I'll check out the other videos for sure. About Twin Cobra on the Mega Drive, it's this version I want to beat for now, I want to be the one standing after all my attempts haha.
      Great to know you're planning on covering other consoles in the future like you did for PC-Engine, they're gonna be amazing videos I tell you that.
      I also like Raiden, although I think it's just a well made coin-eater, like MANY others. But others like the exclusive R-Type III on the SNES is also a favorite. I never understood the appeal of bullet hell shooters, so games like Carrier Wing (Capcom), the original Prehistoric Isle, even gallery shooters like Cabal and Blood Brothers are much more interesting than just trying to survive avoiding hundreds of bullets per second the whole game. I think the first Donpachi game is as far as I get and can stand. 3D ones like R-Type Delta, R-Type Final (PS2), G-Darius and others are really good. I remember my brothers and I playing a lot Sexy Parodius on the Saturn, so there's always good shmups on every platform, since Atari 2600!
      There are many great titles, Sonic Wings and the 1945 series, it's hard to remember them all.

    1:00:25 The epitome! Final Soldier kicks Soldier Blades and Super Star Soldiers butt. This was a smaller production, with a small team, but small is usually a benefit: no compromise. The sound track is the absolute best of any shmup on a HuCard. Soldier Blade only shines with its music in Operation 1. Final Soldeir has excellent music from begin to end. The power ups are better as well, with a menu to modify their behaviour.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Funny how different we all can be as that’s how I feel about Soldier Blade. The soundtrack to me is on another level on nearly all stages especially 3-5 and I prefer the gameplay quite a bit over Final. SB was also a small team on a limited timeline and created gold in my eyes. I think all 3 have incredible 2min caravan modes but the main game in SB is by far my most played. I prefer how streamlined it is and how much variety the stages have. And again I adore it’s soundtrack most of all which is 100% personal taste. I’d never fault you for your view though I know others who prefer Final too. And really I enjoy playing all 3 as wonderful games.

    A truly fantastic video that shows a lot of love for the pc engine and its games!! And lasts for more than 3 hours long!! There are lots of great shumps on this system, many of them hidden gems. I didn't know about Force Gear or the caravan/special version of Nexzr that I'll surely check. I also think Metal Stoker is an interesting game, that could be considered somewhat a shoot 'em up. Considering how in-depth and well researched everything in this video is, it really surprised me that it somehow bypassed you that *Galaga 88* was an arcade game before the PC Engine, and the PCE game is just a really good port of that game, rather than a beefed up one of the OG Galaga. I'd have loved to hear your thoughts about how the two hold up against eachother.
    But I'm sure there are already 300 other comments yelling about that mistake, so I digress :D The mixup of *Puzzle Bobble* and *Bubble Bobble* cut me deep on a personal level, but I can't fault that in a video focused on shooters. This is an outstanding shmup compilation for a very misunderstood console. I personally own a PC Engine Duo thats been recapped and rgb modded, easily one of the most fun consoles I've ever owned from that generation. Unfortunately I don't have too many legitimate copies of any PCE/TurboGrafx games because they're too expensive. Feeding 20+ other consoles makes PC Engine purchases much more calculated and infrequent. Instead I've had to make do with buying repro discs from PCE Works and a Turbo Everdrive from Krikzz for the hucard titles, but it's still nice to have those and I am planning on grabbing more legit copies of some games. I do however, due to my immense respect for the series, own a legitimate copy of Gradius 2 so I got real giddy when you started talking about that one. My fav shmup on PCE? Yes! Best Gradius? Possibly, in my opinion only Gradius V on the PS2 could go in front or behind Gradius 2 depending on tastes. I was also pleasantly surprised to see the Pioneer Laseractive shown off here. By doing this you've basically made this video the de-facto on shmups for PC Engine and TurboGrafx. You're a legend my man congrats on this milestone, you've earned it.

    • @ShmupJunkie
      @ShmupJunkie  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Big heartfelt thanks for the great comment and I'm really glad you got so much out of it. I wasn't originally going to include the LaserActive games, but the fact that I have it/them, it would be a crime not to. You'd imagine after finishing the huge list I'd not be keen on squeezing in even more work and you would be right, but I just took my time and wanted to do every game I could. I'd still change some things here and there, and maybe make some additions, but at this point I have to be happy with what I was able to put out there. I do really hope it gets used as reference for years to come or until someone does it better.

      You know I considered it, but it's more of an action flight sim to me than a proper shooter. It didn't quite seem to fit. But one game I regret not including is Metal Stoker, which is more puzzle than shooter, but still has many of the mechanics and is really cool. So I could've given it some exposure. That one I really wish I got in there.

    Hey Shmup Junkie, does Valkyrie no Densetsu counts as a shoot em up? Or is it an rpg? I discovered that it got PC engine version and also resembles Pocky n Rocky so I assumed it can count? Or perhaps its just an rpg?

    • @ShmupJunkie

      It’s not a traditional shmup no, more of a overhead action/run n gun with some light rpg elements. Really quite a hybrid. It’s cool it’s coming to ACA. Maybe it would be fun to do an episode on my top 5 or 10 favorite overhead shmup style run n guns like this as there are so many good ones and fun.

      @AstarOfDavid 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ShmupJunkie Just a question (and no offense) but why are so many captures of these games jerky and lagging? It seems to be giving a poor impression of these titles by making the TG16 look like a chopfest machine. (As a simple first example is Aeroblasters - a game I personally owned - in your footage it lags like crazy - which the real game did not - then it speeds up for a moment and looks normal then goes choppy again. Another random example is Final Soldier where it runs choppy in some clips then smooth it other clips.)
      Perhaps you captured them at the wrong FPS or using the wrong Hrz for capture? Like running a 50Hrz signal into a 60Hrz capture? Or maybe you ran them on an emulator on the same PC as the capture card? Thus it was not powerfully enough to do both at the same time (Emulate & Capture)? I might also add that not all of the games shown do this - some actually play smoothly. So maybe you had the settings on your capture card set lower near the beginning of your capture fest but then changed it to a higher bit rate or FPS rate for the later captures?? Thanks for the monumental effort either way.
