A Space Race that showed us that anything is possible about the human spirit, whether it be for the good or the bad side that humanity often sees itself as, but it is a marvelous show of the core fundamental of human spirit of exploration.
I see it more as the power of propaganda harnessed for the good of the many. The Space Race was about developing navigation, surveillance and weapons satellites with global reach. But the U.S. had to _sell_ the space race as a peaceful contest of science and exploration in order to maintain public support. @Denver Beek the Soviets made it to space, but their goal was to the moon same as the US. So lets look at this in context. As for the space race the germans beat both and won when they launched a new v2 from Peenemünde, and became the first known man-made object to reach space, traveling 118 miles on October 3, 1942. The soviets made it to space first and conveyed aspirations to the moon. The soviets won the orbit race with Yuri Gagarin. The US however beat them to the moon. And their first station was a catastrophe. April 19, 1971, the Soviet Union placed into orbit Salyut, the world’s first space station. Salyut hosted the crew of Georgi T. Dobrovolski, Vladislav N. Volkov, and Viktor I. Patsayev. The flight ended tragically when the crew died due to the sudden depressurization of their Soyuz 11 spacecraft shortly before reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. That left the US ahead with the first successful space station, skylab which lasted May 25, 1973 to February 8,1974 kept astronauts 84 days, a record at the time over the soviets and when tests were completed for the Saturn v phase tests it was allowed to fall back to earth. Now if all that plus the moon landing isn't enough to show the US was ahead in most areas of space exploration, the ussr lost cosmonauts in space accidents when the US didn't.

My gripe with this was the ROE in the first incident. You're telling me the US didn't have some form of Russian translator with them or a team member that understands Russian? Or why the Russians don't have some form of English translation on them? Not only did they not comply with the Marines to back off, but they apparently thought the Marines weren't gonna risk shooting them. And then the Russians decided to assault the US base Jamestown to get their man back, which alone could spark WWIII without telling their own government. Both sides were very stupid in how they dealt with the situation.
The russians weren't stupid. This was likely the exact result that they wanted. They felt threatened by the Americans militarizing Jamestown, so they looked for a reason to shoot back but not to shoot first. So they put these cosmonauts there to provoke the americans. I don't think the cosmonauts were on board with that, which might be why one of them asked for asylum in the US despite getting shot by an american. The Cosmonauts are shot as they go to reach for their own book of English phrases, the American soldiers thinking they were reaching for guns. The Americans also had translated phrases, but they were just a handful of phrases, and not sufficient to communicate with the Cosmonauts.

Gotta say, I really enjoyed this show. The arcs involving space politics and dogma were some really griping stuff. But I have to say everything and anything involving the Baldwin’s home drama was the biggest pain point. Hell half the time it jumped back to the Baldwin family in the 2nd half of the 2nd season I really just wanted to skip but couldn’t out of risking missing some key point that is sprinkled in for use in the space plots.
The family drama was great for exploring and critiquing the family dynamics of that time. It addresses the reality of people from that era (and even still today,) not having emotional maturity and rejecting therapy when they desperately need, and the show then demonstrates the consequences those societal pressures can have on relationships. The culture of the time is just as important as the politics and science of the era, and the show makes sure to cover as much of it as it can.

For All Mankind is the Star Trek prequel I never knew I wanted. And it's funny how after writing for Star Trek, Ron Moore did an anti-Star Trek show with BSG, and now he's doing a proto-Star Trek. Maybe Moore is ready to do more Star Trek now. I really wish Paramount/CBS would just bring him back and give him control of Star Trek. If Paramount won't do that, maybe Seth MacFarlane should hire Moore to write for the Orville.
I doubt For All Mankind being a Star Trek Prequel, as the writer of Star Trek was a pro-socialist guy and I dont really think thats the message of this show.
This reminds me of the exceptional Aurora 4X, the infamous spreadsheet simulator. Its creator has forums where he posts battle reports on the games he runs, and one of them is the space race continuing into an interstellar age, with NATO and the Warsaw Pact discovering jump points, settling new worlds, and of course building space fleets and glaring tensely at each other. Then third parties like China get into the mix, and then literal, actual aliens, all while human politics are already on a knife's edge and Earth is no longer our only home, removing the strongest disincentive to all-out nuclear apocalypse... the story of this game report thing was so gripping, would strongly recommend.
@@TemplinInstitute He's right, I was just scrolling down to see if someone else caught it. Sally Field is an access, best known for starring opposite Burt Reynolds and also as Andrew Garfield's Spiderman's Aunt May.
I feel like every new episode of this series the further they throw the realism out the window. Although the fact that Moon Marines came out of an issue with claiming lithium deposits is probably they way it would happen.
@@L154N4LG4IB Nope. The US had established a claim, jumping it is an act of war. In our world, no one can claim territory on the moon due to treaties, but that doesn't exist in their world.
I never watched whole series but there is this moment when they shot those astronauts. I saw People blown up, torn apart, eaten alive, but being stuck in your spacesuit and burn alive in it was the very first time i was moved.
It's worth mentioning that the meltdown situation could have been entirely avoided if the US hadn't secretly deployed a second breeder reactor to make weaponised plutonium. Turns out the Soviet fear of the US trying to make nuclear weapons on the moon was entirely justified
Looking at this video, I wonder if man will one day return to the moon only to turn outer space into a new battleground. I'll bet For All Mankind will turn out to be a surprise prequel to the Expanse. Anyhow, we need to see more videos on For All Mankind.
In space everyone has to work together if you want to come back. Nations can send military personnel into space. But I think once you get up there everything goes out the window when you realize if we don't work together neither of us are going home and no one is going to come and get us.
I think that during early space combat shotguns will likely become popular for military use again hit hits hard but has low penetration power so you are less likely to punch holes in walls. Plus the shells are big so it will likely be pretty ergonomic as well with big gloves on.
i dont really see how a reactor meltdown, especially one of a reactor of that size, would significantly impact the entire crater much less render the entire area uninhabitable.
It wouldn’t be as disastrous as it would on Earth, but the fact it’s occurring at the base itself is fatal to all that’s there If things failed, both the Soviets and Americans at the colony would have been killed and may have escalated the conflict The sacrifice done to prevent it saved the lives that was there and was a factor in defusing the conflict
On one hand you don't have wind to carry the radioactive dust far. On the other hand, you also don't have rain on the moon to wash the radioactive materials away. Overall it still better that the radioactive dust stay near the blew up reactor.
@@minhducnguyen9276 you'd get "wind" from the steam escaping the destroyed reactor at explosive pressure. What you *wouldn't* have is any atmosphere to create drag or to dissipate the heat in any substantial way.
I have a suggestion, currently in season three of the show, The Russian Mars rockets nuclear engines go into meltdown and the American ship needs to save them but in the process of rescuing the cosmonauts two astronauts and one cosmonaut is killed, I think that would make a really good video
This is the reason space has not been weaponized. Through all earth conflicts, no one has killed anyone else in space. Good alternate fiction though. Just different enough but possible.
What I found funny was the Astronauts riding a Moon Lander instead of some sort of Rocket Barge like in Killzone. The Intruder is not a good design for flying in the sky for combat but rather as something for Astronauts rather.

Good news, the showrunners announced a seven season arc, the fourth is already in development.
@@SHVRWK I can't wait to see year 2132 СССР/soviets lol
@@gifyifhkhmcucyk6865 Which is my problem with the show. The Soviet Union is bound to collapse from the day of its inception. Their politics and economical system are unsustainable, they would always collapse in every alternate universe.
@@SHVRWK In the show, Gorbatchev was successful with his economical reforms, transforming the USSR into the equivalent of modern day China with state capitalism.
Fun fact: The Sea Dragon was a real design, though never built in our timeline (obviously).
And its a shame. Its concept is really interresting and would have worked
@@Tomlar147 combustion instability
@@kalpakwadettiwar9487 if they had tried to pursue that road maybe it would have been solved
@@Tomlar147 there was no need for such big payloads back then, but perhaps the design could be revisited in the near future
@@toxicg3100 you are right. They could use it to deliver parts of a new space station or Luna mission with it.
And if you take in the advances in compomnants and alloys mabye even build the rocker bigger or with a heavy pay load
Congratulations, Templin. You’ve managed to convince me to watch this show. Bravo
A gun guy in another video did a breakdown of the modifications of the rifles used and info surrounding that. The show really went the extra mile to make the guns legit. Mods like no trigger guard etc. even types of metal or whatever to work in space.
Especially when Gordo's arc was actually quite interesting and good.
The family drama was great for exploring and critiquing the family dynamics of that time. It addresses the reality of people from that era (and even still today,) not having emotional maturity and rejecting therapy when they desperately need, and the show then demonstrates the consequences those societal pressures can have on relationships. The culture of the time is just as important as the politics and science of the era, and the show makes sure to cover as much of it as it can.
finally a for all mankind video! cant wait for more! surely with season 3 coming with mars!
i got a heart? i dont see it..but thats epic!
Absolutely outstanding show. I was really hoping for space AK74s to go up against the space M16s though
Didn't they though? The firefight in the hallway just before the MacGyver Inc. space suits sequence? Or if you were saying you just wanted to see more of it, well... yeah I kinda did too lol
@@quinnsoutar2196 The prop guns were some kind of AKM variant with east German stocks. I was hoping for actual AK74s
@@quinnsoutar2196 No, they had 7.62x39 AKM variants. It'd be more correct and tbh cooler to see the cosmonauts with AK74s in 5.45x39. I enjoyed the scenes anyways... lol
I really enjoyed this show, glad it was given another season.
Renewed for season 4 too.
The sheer irony.
I doubt For All Mankind being a Star Trek Prequel, as the writer of Star Trek was a pro-socialist guy and I dont really think thats the message of this show.
@@jakespacepiratee3740 being pro Soviet is not the same as being pro socialism. Or so I am told by every single Socialist I meet.
@@NGCAnderopolis I know there is a difference between the Soviets and Socialism as a whole.
For All Mankind is more of a sequel to The Expanse than it is to Star Trek.
7:52 Sally... Field? Didn't she became an astronaut after the Flying Nun was over. Seriously doing Sally Ride dirty.

finally you talking about for all mankind this show is a great alternate history show one of the best!
"The more we go out there and spend time out there, all the things we do here are going to happen in space." -- Mark Sundahl
So glad to see this show get some recognition
Sounds interesting. You have a link or maybe a reference for a search?
Link?
Sorry I never replied to these, but just search "NATO v Soviet" in the actual Aurora forums and it's pretty easy to find, one of the classics.
Thanks!
Pretty sure the astronaut on Pathfinder was Sally Ride, not Sally Field...
god damn it, I think you're right
I did love the video though!
@@TemplinInstitute He's right, I was just scrolling down to see if someone else caught it. Sally Field is an access, best known for starring opposite Burt Reynolds and also as Andrew Garfield's Spiderman's Aunt May.
The hair kind of gives it away
I feel like every new episode of this series the further they throw the realism out the window. Although the fact that Moon Marines came out of an issue with claiming lithium deposits is probably they way it would happen.
Fantastic show and the strike on the Soviet trespassers was more exciting than any recent Star Trek.
Trespassers? They got to the moon first they have as much right as the US to mine Shackleton.
@@L154N4LG4IB Nope. The US had established a claim, jumping it is an act of war. In our world, no one can claim territory on the moon due to treaties, but that doesn't exist in their world.
Awesome video sir thanks i love alternative history especially when it comes to the cold War era of history 😀
For all Mankind truly is a good show in a world of recently very bad ones.
I didn't like the fact that drama things are sprinkled randomly throughout episodes though but still it is pretty good show
@@ruskiwaffle1991 The Karen part still gave me PTSD
Was on the edge of my seat for that whole episode of FAM.
I haven't seen the show yet but I'm looking forward to it!
I never watched whole series but there is this moment when they shot those astronauts. I saw People blown up, torn apart, eaten alive, but being stuck in your spacesuit and burn alive in it was the very first time i was moved.
It gave me something of an "Outland" vibe.....
I'm so glad I was able to find a free apple tv trial to binge this
Neat! I am glad I know about it now. I almost never hear about what is on Apple TV+.
It's worth mentioning that the meltdown situation could have been entirely avoided if the US hadn't secretly deployed a second breeder reactor to make weaponised plutonium. Turns out the Soviet fear of the US trying to make nuclear weapons on the moon was entirely justified
FOR ALL MANKIND LET´S GOOOO!!!!
This just feels like the Star Trek prequel we needed.
Looking at this video, I wonder if man will one day return to the moon only to turn outer space into a new battleground.
I'll bet For All Mankind will turn out to be a surprise prequel to the Expanse.
Anyhow, we need to see more videos on For All Mankind.
I love the EVAK-47's designs
The new season of "For All Mankind" starts today.
In space everyone has to work together if you want to come back. Nations can send military personnel into space. But I think once you get up there everything goes out the window when you realize if we don't work together neither of us are going home and no one is going to come and get us.
Just in time for Season 3 starting tomorrow ( Friday 10th )
You guys should cover the Federal Bureau of Control from the game Control
I think that during early space combat shotguns will likely become popular for military use again hit hits hard but has low penetration power so you are less likely to punch holes in walls. Plus the shells are big so it will likely be pretty ergonomic as well with big gloves on.
Templin Institute, Can you do video about the Control Franchise? The FBC, The Board, Hiss, Former, Polaris, Darkness, Mold is worth to talk about!
i dont really see how a reactor meltdown, especially one of a reactor of that size, would significantly impact the entire crater much less render the entire area uninhabitable.
It wouldn’t be as disastrous as it would on Earth, but the fact it’s occurring at the base itself is fatal to all that’s there
If things failed, both the Soviets and Americans at the colony would have been killed and may have escalated the conflict
The sacrifice done to prevent it saved the lives that was there and was a factor in defusing the conflict
On one hand you don't have wind to carry the radioactive dust far. On the other hand, you also don't have rain on the moon to wash the radioactive materials away. Overall it still better that the radioactive dust stay near the blew up reactor.
@@minhducnguyen9276 you'd get
"wind" from the steam escaping the destroyed reactor at explosive pressure. What you *wouldn't* have is any atmosphere to create drag or to dissipate the heat in any substantial way.
theyre wearing space suits, i think that can block out radiation...
@@gasmaskalan1771 it depends on how much and more importantly the kind of radiation, its not like their suits are lead lined or anything
Excellent coverage as always!
Marines: Gentleman...we just captured the flag on the moon...that was pretty fucking ninja
Such a great show!
I've never had seen a full episode but it completely fascinates me how Nasa would have done this
I have a suggestion, currently in season three of the show, The Russian Mars rockets nuclear engines go into meltdown and the American ship needs to save them but in the process of rescuing the cosmonauts two astronauts and one cosmonaut is killed, I think that would make a really good video
The best video actually.
We need more on For All Manding, it is a cool show.
This video got me to watch For All Mankind
I really like the show. Its not perfect but the drama is solid, cant wait for next season to begin!
Although for all mankind is overall a solid '' average '', their is some cool scene here and there. Will definitely check s3 (for free)
Expanse prequels are something else for sure
This feels so much like one of Stephen Baxter's stories, it's unreal
You should make video about Mars-94 rescue
This is the reason space has not been weaponized. Through all earth conflicts, no one has killed anyone else in space. Good alternate fiction though. Just different enough but possible.
What I found funny was the Astronauts riding a Moon Lander instead of some sort of Rocket Barge like in Killzone. The Intruder is not a good design for flying in the sky for combat but rather as something for Astronauts rather.
It’s both realism points, and adds to the aesthetic of the show, that both the USA and USSR didn’t build their moon bases for war
@@myownspace9666 I wasn't wanting it to be a War vehicle, rather an easy transport vehicle that could reach places more than say a Lunar Rover.
It is interesting while watching this show to think how close the US and USSR came to wiping each other out if not for a few individuals on both sides.
7:52 Sally RIDE (a real astronaut), not Sally Field. Geez.
Uhhh… Sally Ride. Sally Field is Forrest Gump’s mom.
For all mankind is a great show

For All Mankind is a spiritual prequel to the Expanse. I will die on this hill
We need more For All Mankind content!
I dont get how technology advanced so quickly when compared to our universe, i think it did get a bit silly towards the end
The Templin Institute shall have an absolute blast when the *Atomic Hearth* drops !
Astronaut "Sally FIELD"?! Talk about The Flying Nun!
awesome vid, would love to more for all mankind stuff.
Will you guys do an episode on Katorga-12 from the 2012 FPS Singularity?
They should make a Video about the 'One Year War' in the GUNDAM Franchise
The thumbnail reminded me immediately of the upcoming game Boundary for some reason-
Your voice is haunting. Great content
Why did the space race end with the moon? I wanted it to continue afterwards at the same speed
Do you do comics too? If so would you do some content on the über comics series. There are some crazy battle and alternate history in that one.
If only Gillen had any chances to publish the final issues...
@@Ocelot835 That seems unlikely in the foreseeable future. Maybe once Avatar Press closes down and sells their properties, someone interested might buy it but for now we will stay in this limbo. Just a few issues from the conclusion.

Amazing animation on this video
FINALLY A FAM VIDEO!!!!
I hope nobody in 1000 years will mistake this as real history
Somewhere, among all the other infinite unverses, there is at least one where this timeline is real.
Can't wait for 3 side Mars war on Season 3
the thing that i feel bad the most is when these 2 cosmonaut got shot, they tried to get the letter to greet them but was misunderstood
