    Seems like the cam gear got loose over time and "lost" timing. The tuner "fixed" timing through the ecu and pushed it on lean conditions which caused the piston to pit/melt. This wouldn't be a 1 pull failure.

      If you watch Tommy's video, he shows pictures that were sent to Jack at HPlogic.
      The pitting sugests either too much advanced timing, or too little fuel [lean].
      Those cam gears from what I understand [and is backed up on Greddy website] only adjust 16 degrees either way, while the valve clearance would require somewhere in the region of 30 to 32 degree before the vavles would make contact.
      Based on all this, it seems only 1 of 2 things could of happened.
      Either the timing was completely off.
      Or
      Those 2 cylinders were lean.
      A real tuner will 1st check timing before touching the car, anyone that does not do this is NOT a real tuner.
      A real tuner will have an eye on afr and timing at ALL times during a pull and SHOULD spot any issue with timing/afr as it happens.
      Those pitting marks do not happen in 1 run like that, that thing has pre-det written all over it.
      Also side note : Anything that rotates should have Lock-tight to secure it. Where the fk was the lock-tight on the cam gear adjustment point bolts???

    8:50 Please don't loosen the bolts for the cam caps in a line like that. Theres a sequence to do it to prevent strain on the camshaft and can cause them to crack/snap. 99% of adjustable cam gears can not adjust enough to make any kind of valve contact. Yes the bolts backing out was not a good thing and most likely did contribute to some kind of timing failure. But that did not make your valves bend. It didnt cause your melting issue. It sounds like your tuner doing a hot tune on 91 with 6-7 consecutive pulls Is the cause of your failure. this all should have been caught pretty quickly by the tuner.

    Two types of timing involved here. A lot of people are assuming they are referencing the same timing. Mechanical timing (Engine Builder) vs Ignition Timing (Tuner). Unfortunately the bolts on the cam gear were never checked and are often just snug from the manufacturer and not tight. Josh confirmed he did not adjust the cam timing and made the assumption last time engine was together those bolts would of been tight. I don’t believe the tuner would have moved these either as would require to remove rocker covers/timing covers and use a dial indicator to set these properly.
    Failure will be due to detonation. Those cams moving would of put the engine out of sync to the combustion event causing the detonation due to ignition advance/fuel delivery now happening at the wrong time
    Unfortunately for Dustin this could of been potentially caught by various people but it sneaked past everyone.

      This pretty much sums it up. Imagine a VVT engine jumping all around and the ECU trying to figure it all out. That’s why the tuner made that “timing was all off” comment, and then made the comment about not enough fuel. At 300 something HP??? I found that weird. This happened thru the whole session not just the last pull. Excellent insight.

    The more I think about it, the more it's clear that the tuner didn't catch that the motor was knocking, and they melted the rings. Why the motor was knocking is their problem to solve, you don't just keep doing pulls while it's detonating that much.
    The tuner should have SOME method of reading out knock, turbo cars are usually knock limited so that's the key factor you're working against when tuning them. They should have noticed the knocking, timing gear loose or not they should have backed off as soon as they saw too much detonation, definitely before they melted rings. The motor was likely pinging for a bunch of pulls. Most tuners will stop mid pull when detonation gets above a certain threshold, and that is way before you start melting rings. Stock RBs have narrowband knock sensors, Link ECUs can handle wideband sensors too, with a live readout of the knock %, and any tuner worth their salt would be using "knock ears" on a turbo car which is temporarily fitted knock sensing.

  • @Gaijin_32
    @Gaijin_32 2 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    100% tuners fault on this one. Every dyno session I’ve had, tuner always done a once over to verify the car was good to go.
    This is why you take something like an rb to a specialty shop and not a “I tune all cars” type shop.

    • @benridesbikes6975
      @benridesbikes6975 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like they were chasing timing around but never thought to check the cam gear, and weren't keeping an eye on detonation and melted some rings. Whether that happened on that one pull or over a series of power pulls it's hard to say, but I imagine it was actually happening over a few of them, it certainly wasn't making as much power as I'd expect at 14psi. My mostly stock RB25 makes about what they made at 14psi, on stock manifold/plenum/cams etc.

    Took 5-6 years for a cam bolt to work loose on my Subaru since it was previously touched, happened at 5-6k RPM in 5th (on the road, not dyno). It only slightly bent two intake valves and did absolutely no other damage at all, even the cam lobes were fine. Nothing melted at all. I caught it immediately and got off the gas but couldn't shut the car down until I was safely off the road (approx 30 seconds max) off throttle the whole time and it was clear there was an issue with the engine (fuel just dumping and igniting in the the exhaust, anti lag sounds without anti lag lol). After I shut it off it and had it towed, when I checked it showed low compression on one side on just two cylinders, replaced the two intake valves and a few other things as preventative maintenance and its been absolutely fine. My car is tuned but only running 19psi. This surely can't have been a one pull thing just because the timing moved, this has to be detonation and bad calibration with a lack of warning sensors. An unfortunate case of trying to tune out a problem through the ecu which they may have not noticed, 6:00 in the dyno vid shows the car doesn't sound right to me too. Feel for you man, its a horrible feeling, hope you get it sorted.

Tuner would definitely have known at this point that something was up, hence the case with all the half pulls, instead of getting base timing established and working from that?? A falling bolt would not have made the crank trigger move and hit the pully alos the tuner should have seen that through the ecu . Unless it wasn't on .
    The head being in such good conditions shows that it's 100% bad tuning because all hes done is keep trying to push the car while fighting issues which has caused it to fry the rings . I've melted rings land's in a rb and it was down the map sensor failure which caused the melt down. So the fact someone was tuning it when it happened it 100% on the tuner.

    Seriously if the valve lash went out of wack from the cam adjustment your valves will be slightly pushed open causing leakage don't jump the gun on the bottom end being bad even tho the tuner might of caused it to melt a Poston by not setting safety parameters

    Hope you see this but i think compression test would have been better than a leak down test now that we know the head was not the issue. If there is an issue with the bottom end, more likely a fuel issue. Yes the timing gear moved but there was no piston/valve contact. Valves are open at different times. Which might be why the leak down test showed cylinder 4 and 5 lower. Not sure the firing order for the rb but your valves could have been open which would cause lower readings with leak down. Just my 2 cents, can’t wait to see the build progress either way.

    Not related to the cam gear situation but how heavy is the clutch in this car? I know its unlikely but is it possible that the engine has had bad/progressive crank walk from the start and that's why Jimmy had to mess around with the crank trigger spacing so much to get the gap right, cause if it is excessive every time you put you foot on the clutch its loading the crank forward and back in the block which may explain why the sensor was getting ground down on the balancer. If the gap was set in the full forward loaded position and could move back to make contact when it is relaxed
