- Are Western leaders sleepwalking into a disaster in the Middle East?
As regional tensions surge amid Israel’s devastating war in Gaza, its allies in the US and Europe have refused calls to de-escalate the conflict and prevent the staggering toll on human life from spiralling further.
Western countries vowed to stand by Israel as it responds to the deadly October 7 attack by Hamas, with many invoking the language of the ‘War on Terror’ and a ‘Clash of Civilisations’. But unlike conflicts in the past, these countries have increasingly found themselves isolated on the world stage, at the United Nations and on the streets of major cities.
This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we sit down with Palestinian thinker and political strategist Wadah Khanfar, the former director general of Al Jazeera.
Khanfar says Israel and its allies are desperately trying to maintain Western hegemony in the Middle East and beyond, but they cannot see that the world has already moved on.

I'm quite happy to see the paradigm shift. I don't know what to expect with the rise of the global south, however the current status quo cannot remain. I will not shed a single tear to see the West decline.

What do you propose to do with the "Settler British Community" in Northern Ireland? There is a lot of bigotry and hatred in their community, sure, but the same is also true of the other side. Nobody in Northern Ireland (apart from a few peacemakers) has clean hands and demonising a group of people for their national identity is unacceptable. Protestants have the same right to live there as Catholics.

Which particular colonialism did you have in mind regarding Palestine?
That of the Egyptians, the Greeks & Romans, or the Ottomans?
Did you hear what he said about the inter war period? 30 million dead. Many new countries came into being, millions were displaced, the great colonial powers were fading, quite a bit of the latter bc America was anti colonial.
Context is everything. If you look at the upheaval of post war & empire collapse periods, the Middle East is but a tiny drop in the bucket.
Ukraine v Russia is this, too; the thrashings of decline of the last European empire.
The real reason Israel - this speck - attracts such significance, is bc it is the confluence of the major religions & their ancestral conflicts.
Jews, Christians & Muslims have been at each other for 1200 years, & their antecedents for millennia before that.
Disputed borders, massacres & resentments are age old, with the most peaceful periods often when a dominant power's authority kept a lid on local outbreaks of violence.
This whole kumbaya conception of peace & harmony simply refuses to acknowledge human history & human nature.
There is no such thing as justice for all; only trade offs & compromises.
The Israelis knew they had bought themselves a thorny problem after 1967; a problem of fundamental moral & strategic significance.
They failed to address that problem seriously, so by default chose the apartheid option they themselves recognised as such. 56 years of military occupation is not an acceptable solution.
Such ironies are far from unique; the new America knew that war with the Spanish in their west would make of them what they had just fought to free themselves from, bc it meant projecting power globally - bc they took Spanish overseas territories, like the Philippines.
Kumbaya is great for sing along moments, emotionally uplifting, but for solving fundamental human problems - not so much.
One could argue the great powers at blows here each has too much emotional & historic baggage - Jewish persecution, Christian, Ottoman & Arabic colonialism & empire - to resolve this issue themselves; it is this that the global south sees & prefers not to buy into, & as yet has insufficient power to seriously influence (nor will they anytime soon bc they will never arrive at or represent a unity of values - since they're really an anti group with tgeir own internal injustices, contradictions & disparate objectives).
The Israelis have been stupid in dealing with the Palestinians, strategically speaking, & America too for letting them get away with that. The Palestinians haven't been too smart either, nor their allies.
Continued blaming of the other keeps Arabs, Muslims & Africans from recognising their own failure to adopt enlightenment values; I give you Afghanistan & Iran as prime examples.
The defeat of medieval tribalism remains unfinished, bc it continues to serve local political ambitions, a fact abundantly evident in the Russian & Chinese propoganda designed to destroy western cultural unity.
And while the Western ethos is undoubtedly tarnished by hypocrisy, the alternative offered by the proponents of the global South & multi polarism is simply not a serious contender.
Russia, China, India, RSA, Brazil, SE Asia, Turkiye? That's like a bunch of tattoo'd middle schoolers offering themselves to run the world.
Not one of them has any intellectual credibility as a local government model, let alone a global one.
Their best path to influence would be to get on with developing credible systems in their own countries; otherwise they're like a bunch of pimps & mob bosses bitching that no one takes them seriously.
Regarding universal principles, what does the Arab, Muslim, Hindu or African world have to say about Afghanistan & Iran, or Russia, China or N Korea?
Nothing useful, that's for sure.
This is why the west doubles down, bc it knows it's model is far better than the alternatives.
It also knows it is departing from its own aspirations & ambitions, & that this is in part due to the efforts of the enemies of those principles; but it sees it's own failings too, & that is where hope is; it sure as hell is not in Russia China India Turkey Syria of Iran.
Why would you think the Irish-British and Palestinian-Israeli situation were equal? I am confused. The jews are the people who were exiled and the Palestinians are the descendants of conquerors and colonialists. I live in Dublin Ireland.If you talk to Irish people they always have great sympathy with the Palestinian people.We were occupied by the the British for over eight hundred years.During the first world war war the Irish arose against British occupation.Irish men joined the british army because the Irish were promised home rule.A parliament of our own if Irish men joined the British army and fought for the allies at the time.The rising was not popular with most Irish people but the British executed the leaders of the rising.This mobilized the Irish people up in favour of the rising.The British then left this island for the first time in eight hundred years.The British then signed a treaty which would give twenty six countries to Ireland, they still to this day still occupy six countries.This is still a contentious issue here in Ireland.The six countries have still the majority ruling class which is still pro British.We lost two million people to famine in the late nineteen century when two million died of famine.Millions more emergrated to the four corners of the world because they were starving.During this period food manly corn was being exported from Ireland.The famine was created to get the Irish of the land so the they could rear beef to feed the people in Britain during the industrial revolution this was genocide in my opinion.They still occupy six counties because the majority there are descendants of scottish and planted in Ulster by the British.Down through the centuries they took our land , our religion, our culture, our language.We had thirty years of urban war fare from the late sixties to the the early nineties.Most young Irish people have forgotten this period, but they know unfairness when they see it.Our politicians in the EU and the left wing politicians still speak out for Palestinian people.People have taken to the streets to protest against the war on the Palestinian people.I am horrified, people are horrified.We as a nation have lots of voices who are horrified at what has become of the Palestinian people.Eight hundred years of British rule here has left it on the physic of the Irish people.Zionism is a political construct.The Irish people protested against the war on the Palestinian people as unjust and disproportionate.The war in Ukraine was hatched when the orange revolution took place in 2014.The vast majority of the Ukrainian people are displaced, those left behind are being slaughtered by Russian forces.This war should not have happened.Ukraine will never recover from this war.My prayers and I am a Catholic are with the Palestinian people.We need peace in this world.The American people are not to blame.They are suffering economically.Its the elites in Washington who forge this unjust and horrible wars on their behalf.Its time for a new world order but don’t forget the ordinary citizens of the world who have no say in what is happening on their behalf.Most people want their basic human rights to feed their children, to have shelter, to educate their children, to peacefully live their lives.My prayers are with the Palestinian people, my heart goes out to them and the suffering they are experiencing.🇨🇮we are with you.

@castleknock19 it was interesting to read your Irish perspective and in the same way that there is a difference between Americans and their government or the palestinian people and hamas or the Palestinian people and the Palestinian Authority, there is a huge difference between the Israeli people and their government. Before the war - for over a year, people have been marching every week demanding their government step down. They demonstrated yesterday in front of the prime ministers house to make it clear to him that the war will not help him stay in power. I dont see any media showing this reality. I agree with you, most peoples just want to live in peace but their leadership just want to hang on to power and money like The Hamas leadership in Qatar or the prime minister in Israel.
We are with the Palestinians & the Irish in their struggles against oppression.

We need to give Illegal Occupation land back to Palestine and Give Palestine the Justice we have denied them for 75 years. You know in one of the Hospitals in Gaza there was a young Palestinians that talked with a lady (thankfully she just had some very minor injuries so she is fine, May Allah Keep protecting her) and she had her Id card with her and on that it said when she was born and her birth country : You know what it said: Born 1944 in Palestine. She is older then the state of Israel.

I used to be for the 2 state solution, then I realized it'll not give everyone justice, nor would be the most viable. Best solution for everyone is one democratic, secular state where all citizens share the same exact same rights with no exception. Ofc all Palestinians around the world would be granted a right to return to their land. This would allow an Israeli wanting to move to the West Bank or Gaza to do so, and a Palestinian family from Haifa or Tel Aviv to return to their ancestral homeland.
The main obstacle is the notion of a "Jewish democratic state" which is a nonsensical notion in itself, there's no such thing as a state that is both democratic and only favors one ethnicity/religion above all others. Also if a Jewish state is created on a land where the local population is in majority non-jewish (Muslims, Christians), it means that the Jewish state can essentially only exist by denying the existence of the other.
So sad. Even though I have been subjected to injustice and racism,still I held hope for America, but when it vetoed a cease for humanitarian corridors and after listening to senators spewing venimous hatred for the people of Palestine while they were being slaughtered, all my hopes were shattered and feel as if We all are living under a government that is not reflective of the will of the people

@@annamamo3645 Anna i am glad you saw his videos. he was giving great explanations about the situation that is taking place in the middle east , ukraine and russia. one of the reasons i believe he is right is because when a state attains technology improvements people start being lazy and don't work on themselves anymore. they are relying on devices more than themselves in a certain extent while people less advanced in technolgies are working on how to be better physically and using efficient strategy to do damage witout relying much miltary equipment, on chars, plane etc.

Many global south countries also have a ton of minorities. That's not a thing special to the West. India even has a specific ministry of the government devoted to maintaining the culture, language, and religions of minority groups: Ministry of Minority Affairs. Or for example Sudan which has a lot of minority ethnicities: Beja, Fur, Nuba, Moro, Masalit, Bornu, Tama, Fulani, Hausa, Nubians, Berta, Zaghawa, Nyimang, Ingessana, Daju, Koalib, Gumuz, Midob and Tagale. Places without a bunch of minorities are the exception and are typically very small places like Iceland (which does have minorities such as Poles but they make up a smaller percentage of the population than minorities do in other countries).

I was wondering why generally good people would ignore a genocide and unequivically stand with Israel, even if just yesterday they were preaching against Russia for annexing Ukrainian land... Then it hit me... It's AIPAC, if you are a US politician who disagrees with Israel, they spend millions boosting your opposition. If you are with them, they spend millions boosting you. AIPAC is the one holding US politicians hostage, that's why we see people who normally stand up for human rights suddenly change and support Israel no matter how many atrocities they commit. There's an AIPAC in the UK and EU too. We thought America was the world's Superpower, we thought wrong, it is Israel.

As a black American that can barely trace my history past America-All of these horrors committed against us are in our genetic memory, and the history we’ve learned but suppressed because we thought it was in the past. These past few weeks have reminded us. Now we we are crying daily, for Palestine, and for ourselves, our cousins in Africa and the whole diaspora. So painful, but inevitable. We should all pray for Justice and Peace against the evils committed against us, and align with our brothers and sisters of all colors and ethnicities that want also want peace.

You failed to mention Ireland 🇮🇪 in this conversation. South Africa wasn't the only country to suffer because of Apartheid. We suffered greatly at the hands of the British. 200 years ago we had 10m people living here. Our population soon dropped to 2m. Our people was murdered, starved, enslaved, raped and immigrated to other parts of the world because of what the English done to us. My ancestors were lucky to survive.

I am an American and I can agree with everything this man has said. We have lost our morality and think we are indispensable. I am not happy with our government right now. This is a racist country. I pray for Palestine to be free. It is sickening being here and not able to do anything especially when our President is not listening to 80% of our country. I fear for the world for my 9 year old granddaughter.

Given the many broken promises in the past, by the colonialist British in particular, I can see how the Saudis, despite their wealth, are cautious about any new promises. This most definitely smells like a divisive geopolitical possible tactic. However I worry that there is still a Sunni-Shia divide that prevents the wealthiest Gulf states from being more aggressively involved in standing up for the Palestinians. If anyone can comment on that to help educate me, please do.

Here are two events, in my opinion, that changed history:
9/11: It opened the Pandora's box of Western country foreign policies worldwide.
Oct 7: It destroyed the Western reputation forever and exposed Israel for what they truly are - a colonial project of the West that leeches off others for their survival at the expense of the innocent.
This is how a small nation like Palestine changed the course of history. The question of why we, the Irish, are so different compared to the rest of the Western world is because we also suffered under British colonialism for hundreds of years. It resulted in the near destruction of our culture and identity, with our land being ripped apart into Northern Ireland.
West try controlling world alone. Al people in our world, have same right to protection. We are living in a world, where a smaler west part, try controlling world alone. This wrong! Stay strong Mr. Wadah Khanfar!

Let us remember that almost all Israelis are white Europeans, direct from Europe, or 1st or 2nd generation. What we now see clearly are white Europeans bombing brown Palestinian Asians in Asia, with white European governments supporting this or acting as apologists. But brown and black people have no stake in white European guilt over what one group of white Europeans did to another group of Europeans, why should they.
Already we see this accurate view crystalizing and the continued abomination against brown Palestinians by white Europeans is merely laying the foundation for a global race war. On what basis does he gain justification for bombing brown people who have lived on that land for perhaps 25 generations.
