I have and ID.4 (AWD Pro S as reviewed) and have done a 1200, 900, and 800 mile road trips in it without issue. The driving assist, comfort, and VW quality sold the wife and I.
I bought the ID.4 before the Blazer EV came out, I drove a Blazer EV, and I still would pick the ID.4 over it. The ID.4 has CarPlay, it charges faster, better compatibility with chargers, it’s more efficient, has more power, drives better, is more maneuverable, and you can get a much higher trim ID.4 for the same price as the base Blazer EV. I also drove an Equinox EV, and I liked it more than the Blazer EV, but overall preferred the ID.4 over both.
He's the absolute best, no question. I'll watch his videos of vehicles I have no interest in buying just to learn more about them and hear his take. His other non-review, educational videos are also fantastic.
We test drove both and, like you, found the price to be within a few hundred dollars - though the VW was a better option package. We got the ID4 Pro S AWD, and we love it. Fun to drive, fast to charge and just feels solid! I recommend everyone drive them both before deciding. Thanks for what you folks do!
Checked out both these cars back-to-back the same day. Hated the VW window switches, loved the super intuitive transmission control. The VW's very thin sunroof shade allowed noticeable heat gain on a mild day - a deal breaker. The Blazer was solid and refined, and had today's incentives been in place then, I might have bought it. The 288 hp AWD version was quite adequate, but a bit more power would be very persuasive.
Chevy is going to be fighting an uphill battle as long as they refuse to include phone integrations. Their interior is more full-featured, tactile button, more pleasant, etc. than the VW, but being locked into their infotainment is a deal breaker for me (and many, I suspect).
I initially agreed with you, but Tesla outsells everyone in the EV segment, and the lack of carplay and auto hasn't hurt them. Not to mention Rivian. Worst case scenario, they learn from the error of their ways and add it back in thd future because their non EVs use the same screens but keep Auto/Carplay
I did hear that Apple and Google get the rights to sell your personal data. I can certainly understand why GM and other OEM's want some of that cheese.
Those people won't buy GM EVs for the reason they bought the Teslas and Rivians. People buying these two brands do it for the tech. Granted GM has some cool tech (Supercruise being one of them) I find their EVs will attract more traditional car buyers wanting to make a softer transition. I personally like their EVs because despite being an all new powertrain I still feel like I am buying a typical car and not a mobile iPad. As for Apple Carplay/Android Auto, I give it one redesign and they will throw it back in. I'd even wager their hardware is set up to run it should backlash kick in so adding it back in will be simple. I just realized the Honda Prologue is essentially the same car and has it. And to your point of Tesla and Rivian, the Lyriq is currently the best selling luxury EV even outselling Mercedes, BMW and Lexus. I remember when they removed the off switch for the stupid engine stop/start system people were turned off by it (myself included even going so far to remove them from my shopping list) but then they added it back in and I was ok buying their cars. But no means of shutting that stupid feature off (which I do for every drive) was a big no no for me.
This really isn't that big of a deal. Tesla has never had phone integration and it has been just fine. Other car makers are going with their own software as well.
I was just about to say it’s not eligible for the tax credit but it looks like it is. I like the styling outside but the inside of the Blazer better. Had a bunch of them at my local Honda dealership. Wish it had a little more horsepower.
We ordered an ID.4 and had to turn it down when it finally showed up 2 years later. We got a Model Y for $10k less ($44.5k) back in March plus we got $12.5k in incentives as Colorado residents, so we paid $32k. Because we traded in our Model 3, Tesla gave us 2 years of free super charging plus $2k worth of Tesla credits. We liked the VW but at that price, without a heat pump, less range, less efficiency and less room, we had to pass. The Blazer seems like an even worse proposition. I would love to not get a Tesla, but no one else seems to be able to compete with them when you break down the numbers and especially the value.
Super cruise is great, but heat pumps are overrated. The efficiency difference is marginal, and the noise and speed of effectiveness are not as good as a modern heating and cooling system.
Heat pump's importance depends on your climate. I'm in Canada. VW offers the heat pump as an option here. If you care about loosing less range in a "real" winter, choose an EV with a heat pump.
@@GeeDeeBird Heat pumps are absolutely not overrated... unless you live somewhere like Phoenix where there's only a handful of cold days. Minimum 3x the efficiency of strip heaters. Vast majority of the US needs heating from November to March.
@@faeinthebay That "hardware designed to run in reverse" is significant and adds to the noise and complexity of the system. Google "EV heat pump noise" to see for yourself.
I have a '23 ID4 Pro S AWD that i have driven 24k miles. The software is the weak point. However, the build quality is excellent. Zero squeaks/rattles so far. The heated windshield and side mirrors make a huge difference in the winter. My lifetime efficiency is a bit over 3.1 mi/kWh.
Its interesting to see how competent the ID.4 still is compared to a more modern vehicle. I mean, the ID.4 isnt old by any means, but its clear they made some pretty smart design choices regarding packaging. Also its surprising that the Blazer EV doesnt charge nearly as fast as the ID.4.
@@normt430 the things that make it a solid contender here weren't what were updated. Specifically, the handling, compact dimension, shorter overhangs, and larger cargo capacity. The extra performance here is a bonus.
@@ruffmadman so id.4 charging speeds have stayed the same since the beginning? It's software took forever to get an update from VW. Not to mention the rear drum brakes.... With Blazer EV if you don't need interior space you can get a Equinox EV with more cargo space. Or Lyriq if none of those fit your needs. And GM hasn't even brought a GMC or Buick EV into the fold yet.
No way GM consulted focus groups about not including phone integration. GM wants to cash in on people's information and let the chips fall as they may.
@@easternyellowjacket276 They do, but that information is going to your phone and your service provider. The automakers want a piece of that pie. They get none of it if you just emulate your phone via CarPlay.
We bought an ID4 in January. If a Blazer would have been available at that time, we would have included that in our test drives. However, after driving the ID4 since then, we love it. It doesn't have the latest tech or infotainment. But, it works very well. The styling is understated but very nice and refined. It is a comfortable ride and its nice to have a decent charging system when travelling.
I'm a chevy guy but that ID 4 seems much quicker than the Blazer which is something I'd like. GM needs to up the HP of the motors. Our next vehicle will probably be either an Equinox EV or Blazer EV. I'd go for the ID 4 but my wife doesn't like the looks of it (all subjective). One suggestion I'd like to see on reviews is to throw a set of golf clubs in the back to see how they fit. You may not golf but my wife and I do and we're curious how the fit would be. Thanks for the great reviews!
I agree. I commented earlier this is the first EV I've driven since the old Volt, and I was surprised at how slow the power was to come, particularly in town. On the highway, it was a bit better for me.
Anytime I’m at an auto show, or Volkswagen dealer, I find myself repeatedly sitting in the ID.4, as something about the interior shapes and driving position feel “ahhhh, just right!” But the glossy black trim, haptic feedback controls, and worse than average electronic interfaces made things a NO GO. It was a Tesla model Y that won the sale this time. I’m hoping that Volkswagen continues to improve their controls and perhaps I can be serious about them next time.
Ive had a 2023 for almost a year.... I got used to it, to the point that when I drive other cars I miss certain aspects of the ID4 infotainment. For example the size of the screen, the way it's tilted towards the driver etc. HVAC controls are a little convoluted if you want to do more than change the temp, but overall I really like it.
I'm glad I watched this while EV shopping. The deals on the ID4 are amazing where I live right now. The rear power bias is why I chose this and was looking at similar vehicles (Mach-E, Ioniq 5). I despise FWD/FWD biased AWD types of driving dynamics and have no problem shopping for snow tires in the coming winter months. Out of the 3 RWD platforms, I found that the Mach-E is the best handling and fastest overall, the 5/EV6 has the best tech but feels the most gimmicky, and the ID4 I'm buying is the most comfortable and by far the best deal for a RWD platform EV right now. If Ford actually had any good deals, Mach-E all day long.
I test drove the equinox EV and thought it was going to be a big issue with no android auto / carplay but I was pleasantly surprised. It actually isn't a big deal and I'm gonna get one in the upcoming weeks
Great review. You nailed with it comes down to personal preference. I just bought the Blazer EV RS AWD. I also have a Bolt and before that a Nissan Leaf. After looking at all my options I chose the Blazer. I’m not in the car all day and don’t miss CarPlay. I looked at Hyundai , Kia and VW, they are all really nice vehicles and like you said it comes down to personal preference.
I'd choose the VW just for the smartphone integration. It's true that it snows where I live, but _they both have AWD,_ so front vs. rear bias doesn't bother me. The lack of heat pump is a bummer though.
Well Alex, after watching your videos my wife and I decide on the Equinox EV. It gets better range and is very, very comfortable with loads of room. Traded in my beloved 2018 Mazda 6 GT, and also received a slew of rebates as well. Between my trade in and those rebates, we got a 2RS for 17k. And so far, love it.
The Blazer shifter seems to be an electronic version of GM's classic column shifter, it reminds me of the shifter in my dad's old 1980s era Buick -- back and up for reverse, back and down for drive. But yeah, VW's pattern makes more sense if you were designing it from scratch.
Thank you for the comparative review. I’m in the early stages of EV shopping and am currently considering 4 models, including ID 4. In Quebec the market is somewhat different than the US. Until 31 December 2024, 12,000$ EV incentive (drops to 9000$ next year) at point of sale. Place of origin is not relevant, so all mainstream models under 80k MSRP are eligible. ID 4 has heat pump as an option and Kona EVs have heat pumps as standard. Base Blazer is a lot more expensive than Pro ID 4. Equinox is a better comparison. The other two on my list, for price reasons, are Kona Preferred (analogous to SEL in the US) and FWD bZ4X LE (no real equivalent trim in US). The “forks” is currently the least expensive model at 3000-8000$ less than the rest. Still undecided. But I appreciate the comparison as it’s moved the ID 4 ahead of the Equinox for now.
I'm in the same situation as you. I'm in Quebec as well. I drove the Equinox, Blazer and the ID 4 I found that the ID 4 felt cheaper and just not as nice as the Equinox and the interior of the Balzer was way better than the ID4. I they are all fast enough for what I need. I'm also an android user so the no car play is not an issue.
@@col888881 also in Quebec and I'm picking up my Equinox in 2 weeks. I don't dislike the ID.4, but by the time you add the heat pump, the larger battery, seats that are not cloth, you're more expensive than the Equinox. However, if you have no cash, VW has better financing now.
@@col888881 fair points. I do find the much smaller turning radius of the VW attractive (though I’ve certainly never bought a vehicle just for that). I’m also not looking at AWD versions of anything and prefer no leather seats (one of the reasons I bought the base model Prius Prime in 2021-love the car but want an additional one with all the drivers in the household).
We have had our 2022 ID.4 for nearly two years and are pleased with it. We camp a lot, so early on I figured out how two of us -- I am 6'1.5" -- could sleep in the back with the rear seats folded down. We put in a hinged plywood platform in the back (two hatches) to match the height of the folded-down seats. That allows storage under a large part of the sleeping area. Overnight, extra stuff goes in the front seat area or under our heads supporting the pillows just behind the front seats. We used old tent material to make custom screens with magnets that seal against the door exterior to allow opening of one or two windows for minimal-to-full ventilation overnight without allowing bugs to get in. It's been a great motel whether while camping or for getting a comfortable night's sleep at a rest area.
I have a 2023 ID4 Pro S AWD; absolutely love it outside of the squishy brake feel. I would probably go with a RWD 2024 as it's quick enough and much more efficient. I've seen close to 4mi/kWh in my driving so the new RWD would crest that magic number easily.
I've been on the fence, and after seeing Alex's video about the one pay lease, I just searched in the Kansas City area. I found a one pay lease deal on a Blazer EV LT AWD with some decent options packages added. One Pay lease payment on 27 months with 12,000 miles per year is $4,762 (includes a college grad bonus and a non-GM owner bonus) I might not be able to pass up on that.
As a follow up to my own post, I drove the Blazer and Equinox EVs back to back on Friday. So much body roll in the Blazer. I have 2 easily carsick people in my house, and even I felt a little queasy . With that said, I preferred the interior of the Blazer, but the road feel of the Equinox. Note: These were the first EVs I've driven since the 2nd year the Bolt came out, so it's been a minute! Overall, I'm torn. I loathe, loathe, loathe the door handles on the Equinox, but prefer how it drives, as well as the gorgeous red color I drove. in the end, it's just whether or not my quips can be overcome given the insane lease deal on the Blazer right now. I will also point out that the visibility out of them is deplorable.
How about a three or even a four way comparison with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Tesla Model Y AWD LR? If I was shopping for an EV tomorrow, my choices would be the Model Y AWD LR, ID.4 Pro S AWD, IONIQ 5 AWD. It's a tough choice because each one of these vehicles definitely have their pros and cons. VW should have added a heat pump; I believe the battery conditioning was just added for 2024, unless I'm mistaken? IONIQ 5 has one advantage of the V2L and the faster charging architecture of the EGMP platform and finally, Tesla has their Supercharging network but there's also a lot of features that are missing that are present on the competition. Decisions, decisions...
I just with that travel assist was as good as supercruise For those wondering, travel assist is the same thing just less helpful because ot doesnt follow navigation and tried to get off the highway when in the right lane.
Not sure if I missed it, I test drove the Blazer, Equinox, Model Y and the ID.4 PRO S AWD. And the most annoying and definitely the deal breaker against the Blazer was the terrible noisy sound generator of the Blazer. This thing is so loud inside the car and can be heard even when the car is standing at a read light (such a stupid thing). Neither of the other cars had this thing being so loud (by the way I live in Canada and we may have different rules regarding sound generation for EVs)
Just leased a Blazer EV after seeing the great deal Alex got on his. We got a great deal and very happy with the car, 2LT trim. Car was for the wife and she previously only had Bluetooth audio so not having it in this car isn't a big deal. My only complaint is Chevy is selling a $50k with power seats and memory seats aren't standard. We considered the ID4 but the no heat pump and capacitive touch buttons was a bigger deal than no Carplay. Also wife isn't concerned with speed, comfort and more room for kids was a priority.
Between these 2, I gravitate towards ID4. For me, the maneuverability, shorter hood specifically, efficiency and comfort biased ride tuning are preferred. The only factor that would make me think of Chevy is heat pump. Winters here have very few days sub zero, but most are low single digit Celsius.
Thanks for the video! I won't be transitioning to EVs until there is a reliable and standardized charging network. We have a PHEV, and charging it anywhere other than home is always a pain. ChargePoint and EVgo - please be better
In Canada the Blazer is far more expensive than the ID.4, so the Equinox EV is probably the closer rival. I think they're both good but in different ways - the GM twins definitely have more range with the 85 kWh battery vs the 77 kWh in the VW, but the ID.4 has a 350V nominal pack compared to the 290V in the GM twins which means the former will charge faster. I'm not a fan of GM removing Apple CarPlay, whereas VW still has wireless CarPlay + Android Auto. In Canada, you can option the heat pump back on the ID.4, though the Equinox & Blazer comes standard with it.
Blazer EV has ridiculous prices. I just got a lease in WA state for $0 down and $270/m for the RS trim. Equinox was more expensive even though its MSRP is cheaper!
The Equinox EV & ID.4 are closer in size too. The Equinox EV win in range, but the ID.4 beats it in DC fast charging. The Equinox EV has a heat pump, but the ID.4 has Apple CarPlay & Android Auto. Decisions decisions...
In Canada, on price, you'd indeed cross shop the ID.4 with the Equinox and not the Blazer. If, like me, you wouldn't consider the ID.4 with a small battery and old infotainment and the $1500 VW heat pump is a must, IMO the Equinox is a better value. That said, by Canadian standards, financing on the ID.4 is currently very good and at purchase rates lower than the Equinox.
Definitely ID.4. I recently test drove both Equinox & Blazer and own Q4 e-tron & Model Y. Blazer felt very heavy and truck-like. Equinox had extreme FWD bias with pronounced torque steer and a very strange top steering wheel position that was very uncomfortable. While I actually liked the big screens and GM software, VW drives much better and planted, it also features a cleaner design with a consistent and cohesive interior materials. I disliked cheap bits in Blazer and especially Equinox: door panels, air vents, etc. Why have a power driver seat with no memory and only a single auto-dimming outside mirror in a $50K+ car? Jumping back into Tesla and Q4 from either of the GM EVs made me feel better and at home.

I own a blazer ev rs RWD, the best blazer EV. Because I own MYLR also it allows me to compare daily. I enjoy driving Blazer more fyi. The chill mode in model y and RWD is same and more than sufficient. Range is 50 -75 miles great in the Blazer(confirmed after 3000 miles and specific road trip we take normally. We have a 4-1/2 to 5 hour round trip that the blazer can make on a full charge. The awd rs is a dog btw slow and not enough range. Blazer needs better faster dcfc, suercharger access, frunk deeper larger lower trunk and phone as a key. GM your welcome please add/chamge for the 2026 model
My smartphone is a Google Pixel 6. I have the exact same 2024 Blue Chevrolet Blazer 2LT that is in this video. The GM infotainment is based on Red hat in car Linux and is running Android on top with google services with graphics from unreal engine. The integration of the infotainment is far better than Android Auto. So I don't miss it at all. I looked at the ID.4 But a similar equipped ID.4 in Canada was more expensive and I just don't like the ID.4 interior. I also think the vehicle route planning, automatic battery conditioning (with manual battery conditioning option) is just better thought out in the Blazer EV. The heat pump in the Blazer EV is also nice to have here. Performance wise the Blazer EV is fast enough. And the Blazer is a great road cruiser. I don't do a huge number of road trips a year (maybe three). And the Blazer EV charges fast enough for a rest stop. I've been averaging about 3.2mi/KWh (5.2kms/KWh) in my Blazer EV in rural county roads at 100km/h (62 mph) driving in decent weather.
I think the lack of Android auto and apple carplay really depends on the person. Some people want message notifications and dictation replies for all their apps. It also makes it easier to "sync" your progress in podcast and audiobook apps since it's just the same app running on the same phone. Finally was the future-proofing argument, since you can upgrade your phone Hardware but not your infotainment Hardware. So you can't switch to a better cell carrier, nor switch to "5.5G" and 6G when those become available.
$51000... I've just watched review of Geely Galaxy E5 which is a fraction bigger than ID.4 and will be available in 80+ markets. It only costs $15500~20500 in the Chinese market. Make it US compliant, add American features, shipping cost and it would still be below $30000. Non-Tesla EVs in the US are way too expensive. They all rely on the $7500 subsidy to cover for their manufacturing inefficiency and dealer skimming
51k for any new vehicle is out of reach for the vast majority of new car buyers. It's insane! Who has 800+/mo just laying around like that to finance a car? 30k used to be a good target for good quality new car, now it's closer to 35k with ICE cars... but another 15k on top of that for a basic EV is madness.
I think there is a right and wrong way to do a steering column mounted drive selector. Up should be forward and down should be reverse. I don’t think anything with a column selector switches between forward and reverse more than a forklift and they are up for forward and down for reverse. Clearly GM is trying to mimic a conventional column shifter where all the way up is park….but now, all the way up isn’t park and you don’t pull through reverse and neutral. So don’t be different, just be like a forklift and be predictable.
No apple or android auto is mainly a problem for IoS users. I think if you come from a BT only car this is no big deal, if you come from an android phone not a big deal. If you use lots of Google apps it might not be a big deal. Even from a Tesla to a GM, probably not a big deal. As an android user it's not a big deal.
My wife and i both drive EVs. Hers is a 2021 Mach-e, and mine is a 2021 id.4. We are both older, late 70s and wanted to own EVs for environmental reasons. While this review focuses on a feature analysis and the EV operating experience it may miss a serious problem with the VW. Our experience with dealer support from VW of America has been awful. The Ford dealer experience was initially disappointing, it has steadily improved and I know think Ford is fr better. I suspect that GM will also respond better to owners as they move forward. The VW of America experience has actually got worse over the 3 years of ownership. Software update is a joke in the id.4 world. The Ford and GM products offered seamless Plug and Charge (like Tesla) from day one. VW still does not do that after 3 years of promising. Features like Auto-hold are assumed for EVs, it took VW almost 2 years of ownership before they finally added that feature to the 2021 and 2022 cars. So remember you are buying a dealer support network too. VW is not a good dealer network for EVs in America.
I really wanted to like both of these cars, but sadly neither really do it for me. These manufacturers have to work on their packaging. They really should have a frunk. They really should have a heat pump. VW did update the software and infotainment system, and charging is a little better than it used to be. All that being said people would probably be better served waiting on a Model Y Juniper refreshed car. However the design compromises in the refreshed Tesla cars is a mixed bag and not a lot of peoples cup of tea. Hyundai/Kia should offer a wagon version of the Ioniq 5 and EV6. That would be interesting.
How about an ID7 Tourer or any wagon EV in the US. Has to be the most efficient shape, cheaper to build, and I can get something that has tires on it that won't cost me a kidney to replace.
Have a '23 id.4, and looking at a Chevy, but our 2nd car a Tesla m3, I would get a Model Y over either of these two. The problems with the id4 - the software is absolutely awful, as is the phone app. The screwy window and volume and temperature controls are just idiotic and drive me insane, and of course the public charging system and it's software and navigation integration and ease of on the Tesla is literally 5 times better. Trunk space of id4 is very disappointing compared to a model y and of course no frunk. As for the Chevy lack of Android auto/carplay, having it on just drains the phone battery unless you charge it simultaneously and it is much slower and less responsive than the Tesla built-in software. Oh yes, one pedal driving is definitely the way to go and VW not having it is a big bummer.
I still can’t get over that VW took away driver door rear window controls. They add a toggle button to switch to rear windows, so they only save 1 total button. I’d never buy a ID.4 just for this reason. And, I’d never buy a car without CarPlay, so sorry Chevy and VW… I’d buy the Honda Prologue (knowing it is based off the GM/Chevy Ultium platform)
Buy a KIA EV9 Long Range RWD instead. I got one instead of a Blazer with a better deal by going lease so you get the 7500 plus a lot of KIA incentives. You also get more luggage space and faster charging than any of the Chevy or WV models.
Why are we still comparing the blazer too vehicles that are smaller than it? This should have been a comparison between the equinox ev and the id 4, not the blazer.
Mainstream buyers will buy EVs if it meets 3 conditions. Condition 1 is that the cost of an EV has to be equivalent to a similar petrol vehicle. Condition 2 is that the range of an EV has to be equivalent to a similar petrol vehicle (especially in extreme weather conditions). Finally, the time to fully charge an EV is equivalent to the time that it takes to filling up a petrol vehicle with gas. For the mainstream buyer, this would simply be a plug and play where using an EV is no different to a petrol vehicle much like what hybrids are today to petrol vehicles. The point is to make the transition to an EV, easier. If there are too many limitations on how to use EV over a petrol vehicle, then the mainstream buyer will simply skip an EV.
what even is the point of a big screen if I can't use android auto? And unless Chevy opens their software to third party security audits I'm not entering my usernames and passwords into that thing.
The GM infotainment is based on Red had in car Linux and is running Android on top of it with Google services with graphics using unreal engine. So it's basically a well integrated google tablet. So it's already using the same security as your devices.
Contrary to everone else, not having android auto is not a dealbreaker, especially since its fitted with android Automotive and thus has the same apps and google maps built in.
I cannot parrot it enough, GM's insistence on Android/Apple-free infotainment will cause them to return to those systems from owner feedback or trade-ins, and trade to other makers. Personally I would put my money down on the VW, it meets every need.
GM’s Super Cruise works really well; however, the Tesla FSD Version 12.5 works better, as I have both, and FSD works on all roads, not just mapped ones.
Heating. It essentially reverses the flow of the system to provide heat instead of cooling. Without that EVs utilize resistive heaters which are less efficient (though sometimes quicker to respond).

The ID.4 has CarPlay, it charges faster, better compatibility with chargers, it’s more efficient, has more power, drives better, is more maneuverable, and you can get a much higher trim ID.4 for the same price as the base Blazer EV.
I also drove an Equinox EV, and I liked it more than the Blazer EV, but overall preferred the ID.4 over both.

We test drove both and, like you, found the price to be within a few hundred dollars - though the VW was a better option package. We got the ID4 Pro S AWD, and we love it. Fun to drive, fast to charge and just feels solid! I recommend everyone drive them both before deciding. Thanks for what you folks do!
Checked out both these cars back-to-back the same day. Hated the VW window switches, loved the super intuitive transmission control. The VW's very thin sunroof shade allowed noticeable heat gain on a mild day - a deal breaker. The Blazer was solid and refined, and had today's incentives been in place then, I might have bought it. The 288 hp AWD version was quite adequate, but a bit more power would be very persuasive.
Chevy is going to be fighting an uphill battle as long as they refuse to include phone integrations. Their interior is more full-featured, tactile button, more pleasant, etc. than the VW, but being locked into their infotainment is a deal breaker for me (and many, I suspect).
I initially agreed with you, but Tesla outsells everyone in the EV segment, and the lack of carplay and auto hasn't hurt them. Not to mention Rivian. Worst case scenario, they learn from the error of their ways and add it back in thd future because their non EVs use the same screens but keep Auto/Carplay

I did hear that Apple and Google get the rights to sell your personal data. I can certainly understand why GM and other OEM's want some of that cheese.
Those people won't buy GM EVs for the reason they bought the Teslas and Rivians. People buying these two brands do it for the tech. Granted GM has some cool tech (Supercruise being one of them) I find their EVs will attract more traditional car buyers wanting to make a softer transition. I personally like their EVs because despite being an all new powertrain I still feel like I am buying a typical car and not a mobile iPad.
As for Apple Carplay/Android Auto, I give it one redesign and they will throw it back in. I'd even wager their hardware is set up to run it should backlash kick in so adding it back in will be simple. I just realized the Honda Prologue is essentially the same car and has it. And to your point of Tesla and Rivian, the Lyriq is currently the best selling luxury EV even outselling Mercedes, BMW and Lexus.
I remember when they removed the off switch for the stupid engine stop/start system people were turned off by it (myself included even going so far to remove them from my shopping list) but then they added it back in and I was ok buying their cars. But no means of shutting that stupid feature off (which I do for every drive) was a big no no for me.
This really isn't that big of a deal. Tesla has never had phone integration and it has been just fine. Other car makers are going with their own software as well.

Only road trip charging is worth considering. Any ev will charge fine at home or work. Thats also why I only look at highway milage.
We ordered an ID.4 and had to turn it down when it finally showed up 2 years later. We got a Model Y for $10k less ($44.5k) back in March plus we got $12.5k in incentives as Colorado residents, so we paid $32k. Because we traded in our Model 3, Tesla gave us 2 years of free super charging plus $2k worth of Tesla credits. We liked the VW but at that price, without a heat pump, less range, less efficiency and less room, we had to pass. The Blazer seems like an even worse proposition. I would love to not get a Tesla, but no one else seems to be able to compete with them when you break down the numbers and especially the value.

Super cruise is great, but heat pumps are overrated. The efficiency difference is marginal, and the noise and speed of effectiveness are not as good as a modern heating and cooling system.
@GeeDeeBird why would the speed and noise be any different? A heat pump is just an AC compressor with hardware designed to run in reverse.
Heat pump's importance depends on your climate. I'm in Canada. VW offers the heat pump as an option here. If you care about loosing less range in a "real" winter, choose an EV with a heat pump.
@@GeeDeeBird Heat pumps are absolutely not overrated... unless you live somewhere like Phoenix where there's only a handful of cold days. Minimum 3x the efficiency of strip heaters. Vast majority of the US needs heating from November to March.

We purchased ID.4 just a few weeks ago and I am blown away with it. It isn't fast (RWD) but it feels so nice to live with.

I have a '23 ID4 Pro S AWD that i have driven 24k miles. The software is the weak point. However, the build quality is excellent. Zero squeaks/rattles so far. The heated windshield and side mirrors make a huge difference in the winter. My lifetime efficiency is a bit over 3.1 mi/kWh.
Its interesting to see how competent the ID.4 still is compared to a more modern vehicle. I mean, the ID.4 isnt old by any means, but its clear they made some pretty smart design choices regarding packaging. Also its surprising that the Blazer EV doesnt charge nearly as fast as the ID.4.
The id.4 has updates. The Equinox EV just needs an update.
@@normt430 the things that make it a solid contender here weren't what were updated. Specifically, the handling, compact dimension, shorter overhangs, and larger cargo capacity. The extra performance here is a bonus.

With Blazer EV if you don't need interior space you can get a Equinox EV with more cargo space. Or Lyriq if none of those fit your needs. And GM hasn't even brought a GMC or Buick EV into the fold yet.

We bought an ID4 in January. If a Blazer would have been available at that time, we would have included that in our test drives. However, after driving the ID4 since then, we love it. It doesn't have the latest tech or infotainment. But, it works very well. The styling is understated but very nice and refined. It is a comfortable ride and its nice to have a decent charging system when travelling.
Can't praise the VW Travel Assist enough. Just a relaxing driving with it, just touch the steering wheel slightly.
I'm a chevy guy but that ID 4 seems much quicker than the Blazer which is something I'd like. GM needs to up the HP of the motors. Our next vehicle will probably be either an Equinox EV or Blazer EV. I'd go for the ID 4 but my wife doesn't like the looks of it (all subjective). One suggestion I'd like to see on reviews is to throw a set of golf clubs in the back to see how they fit. You may not golf but my wife and I do and we're curious how the fit would be. Thanks for the great reviews!

I agree. I commented earlier this is the first EV I've driven since the old Volt, and I was surprised at how slow the power was to come, particularly in town. On the highway, it was a bit better for me.
I’d pick the id.4 every day of the week.
Anytime I’m at an auto show, or Volkswagen dealer, I find myself repeatedly sitting in the ID.4, as something about the interior shapes and driving position feel “ahhhh, just right!” But the glossy black trim, haptic feedback controls, and worse than average electronic interfaces made things a NO GO. It was a Tesla model Y that won the sale this time. I’m hoping that Volkswagen continues to improve their controls and perhaps I can be serious about them next time.
Ive had a 2023 for almost a year.... I got used to it, to the point that when I drive other cars I miss certain aspects of the ID4 infotainment. For example the size of the screen, the way it's tilted towards the driver etc. HVAC controls are a little convoluted if you want to do more than change the temp, but overall I really like it.
I'm picking up my RWD blazer tomorrow. I can't wait.
I'm glad I watched this while EV shopping. The deals on the ID4 are amazing where I live right now. The rear power bias is why I chose this and was looking at similar vehicles (Mach-E, Ioniq 5). I despise FWD/FWD biased AWD types of driving dynamics and have no problem shopping for snow tires in the coming winter months. Out of the 3 RWD platforms, I found that the Mach-E is the best handling and fastest overall, the 5/EV6 has the best tech but feels the most gimmicky, and the ID4 I'm buying is the most comfortable and by far the best deal for a RWD platform EV right now. If Ford actually had any good deals, Mach-E all day long.
I test drove the equinox EV and thought it was going to be a big issue with no android auto / carplay but I was pleasantly surprised. It actually isn't a big deal and I'm gonna get one in the upcoming weeks
Great review. You nailed with it comes down to personal preference. I just bought the Blazer EV RS AWD. I also have a Bolt and before that a Nissan Leaf. After looking at all my options I chose the Blazer. I’m not in the car all day and don’t miss CarPlay. I looked at Hyundai , Kia and VW, they are all really nice vehicles and like you said it comes down to personal preference.
C'mon Alex just because they are the same price does not mean they are equal comparison. You should have put the Equinox against that Volkswagen
I'd choose the VW just for the smartphone integration. It's true that it snows where I live, but _they both have AWD,_ so front vs. rear bias doesn't bother me. The lack of heat pump is a bummer though.
Well Alex, after watching your videos my wife and I decide on the Equinox EV. It gets better range and is very, very comfortable with loads of room. Traded in my beloved 2018 Mazda 6 GT, and also received a slew of rebates as well. Between my trade in and those rebates, we got a 2RS for 17k. And so far, love it.
The Blazer shifter seems to be an electronic version of GM's classic column shifter, it reminds me of the shifter in my dad's old 1980s era Buick -- back and up for reverse, back and down for drive. But yeah, VW's pattern makes more sense if you were designing it from scratch.
Thank you for the comparative review. I’m in the early stages of EV shopping and am currently considering 4 models, including ID 4. In Quebec the market is somewhat different than the US. Until 31 December 2024, 12,000$ EV incentive (drops to 9000$ next year) at point of sale. Place of origin is not relevant, so all mainstream models under 80k MSRP are eligible. ID 4 has heat pump as an option and Kona EVs have heat pumps as standard. Base Blazer is a lot more expensive than Pro ID 4. Equinox is a better comparison. The other two on my list, for price reasons, are Kona Preferred (analogous to SEL in the US) and FWD bZ4X LE (no real equivalent trim in US). The “forks” is currently the least expensive model at 3000-8000$ less than the rest. Still undecided. But I appreciate the comparison as it’s moved the ID 4 ahead of the Equinox for now.
I'm in the same situation as you. I'm in Quebec as well. I drove the Equinox, Blazer and the ID 4 I found that the ID 4 felt cheaper and just not as nice as the Equinox and the interior of the Balzer was way better than the ID4. I they are all fast enough for what I need. I'm also an android user so the no car play is not an issue.
@@col888881 also in Quebec and I'm picking up my Equinox in 2 weeks. I don't dislike the ID.4, but by the time you add the heat pump, the larger battery, seats that are not cloth, you're more expensive than the Equinox. However, if you have no cash, VW has better financing now.
@@col888881 fair points. I do find the much smaller turning radius of the VW attractive (though I’ve certainly never bought a vehicle just for that). I’m also not looking at AWD versions of anything and prefer no leather seats (one of the reasons I bought the base model Prius Prime in 2021-love the car but want an additional one with all the drivers in the household).

We have had our 2022 ID.4 for nearly two years and are pleased with it. We camp a lot, so early on I figured out how two of us -- I am 6'1.5" -- could sleep in the back with the rear seats folded down. We put in a hinged plywood platform in the back (two hatches) to match the height of the folded-down seats. That allows storage under a large part of the sleeping area. Overnight, extra stuff goes in the front seat area or under our heads supporting the pillows just behind the front seats. We used old tent material to make custom screens with magnets that seal against the door exterior to allow opening of one or two windows for minimal-to-full ventilation overnight without allowing bugs to get in. It's been a great motel whether while camping or for getting a comfortable night's sleep at a rest area.
Alex should have included stats for the Nissan Ariya also. It is certainly more of a competitor than the bZ4x.
I have a 2023 ID4 Pro S AWD; absolutely love it outside of the squishy brake feel. I would probably go with a RWD 2024 as it's quick enough and much more efficient. I've seen close to 4mi/kWh in my driving so the new RWD would crest that magic number easily.
I've been on the fence, and after seeing Alex's video about the one pay lease, I just searched in the Kansas City area. I found a one pay lease deal on a Blazer EV LT AWD with some decent options packages added. One Pay lease payment on 27 months with 12,000 miles per year is $4,762 (includes a college grad bonus and a non-GM owner bonus) I might not be able to pass up on that.
As a follow up to my own post, I drove the Blazer and Equinox EVs back to back on Friday. So much body roll in the Blazer. I have 2 easily carsick people in my house, and even I felt a little queasy . With that said, I preferred the interior of the Blazer, but the road feel of the Equinox. Note: These were the first EVs I've driven since the 2nd year the Bolt came out, so it's been a minute! Overall, I'm torn. I loathe, loathe, loathe the door handles on the Equinox, but prefer how it drives, as well as the gorgeous red color I drove. in the end, it's just whether or not my quips can be overcome given the insane lease deal on the Blazer right now. I will also point out that the visibility out of them is deplorable.
How about a three or even a four way comparison with the Hyundai IONIQ 5 and the Tesla Model Y AWD LR? If I was shopping for an EV tomorrow, my choices would be the Model Y AWD LR, ID.4 Pro S AWD, IONIQ 5 AWD. It's a tough choice because each one of these vehicles definitely have their pros and cons. VW should have added a heat pump; I believe the battery conditioning was just added for 2024, unless I'm mistaken? IONIQ 5 has one advantage of the V2L and the faster charging architecture of the EGMP platform and finally, Tesla has their Supercharging network but there's also a lot of features that are missing that are present on the competition. Decisions, decisions...
If you want convenience go with model Y, fast charging Ioniq5, comfort iD4 simple as that. Each of their pro is the con of the other two

For those wondering, travel assist is the same thing just less helpful because ot doesnt follow navigation and tried to get off the highway when in the right lane.
Does ABRP know about the car's state of charge or battery status. How good is the route planning?
Not sure if I missed it, I test drove the Blazer, Equinox, Model Y and the ID.4 PRO S AWD. And the most annoying and definitely the deal breaker against the Blazer was the terrible noisy sound generator of the Blazer. This thing is so loud inside the car and can be heard even when the car is standing at a read light (such a stupid thing). Neither of the other cars had this thing being so loud (by the way I live in Canada and we may have different rules regarding sound generation for EVs)
Just leased a Blazer EV after seeing the great deal Alex got on his. We got a great deal and very happy with the car, 2LT trim. Car was for the wife and she previously only had Bluetooth audio so not having it in this car isn't a big deal. My only complaint is Chevy is selling a $50k with power seats and memory seats aren't standard.
We considered the ID4 but the no heat pump and capacitive touch buttons was a bigger deal than no Carplay. Also wife isn't concerned with speed, comfort and more room for kids was a priority.
Between these 2, I gravitate towards ID4. For me, the maneuverability, shorter hood specifically, efficiency and comfort biased ride tuning are preferred. The only factor that would make me think of Chevy is heat pump. Winters here have very few days sub zero, but most are low single digit Celsius.
Thanks for the video! I won't be transitioning to EVs until there is a reliable and standardized charging network. We have a PHEV, and charging it anywhere other than home is always a pain. ChargePoint and EVgo - please be better
In Canada the Blazer is far more expensive than the ID.4, so the Equinox EV is probably the closer rival. I think they're both good but in different ways - the GM twins definitely have more range with the 85 kWh battery vs the 77 kWh in the VW, but the ID.4 has a 350V nominal pack compared to the 290V in the GM twins which means the former will charge faster. I'm not a fan of GM removing Apple CarPlay, whereas VW still has wireless CarPlay + Android Auto.
In Canada, you can option the heat pump back on the ID.4, though the Equinox & Blazer comes standard with it.
So we're comparing a base Blazer with the top trim ID.4??

We recently leased an ID.4 Pro S AWD and really enjoy driving it. It has some quirks, but show me a vehicle without them.
The Chevy is about $10K more in Canada than the ID4 Equinox is closer in price.
Blazer EV has ridiculous prices. I just got a lease in WA state for $0 down and $270/m for the RS trim. Equinox was more expensive even though its MSRP is cheaper!
The Equinox EV & ID.4 are closer in size too. The Equinox EV win in range, but the ID.4 beats it in DC fast charging. The Equinox EV has a heat pump, but the ID.4 has Apple CarPlay & Android Auto.

In Canada, on price, you'd indeed cross shop the ID.4 with the Equinox and not the Blazer. If, like me, you wouldn't consider the ID.4 with a small battery and old infotainment and the $1500 VW heat pump is a must, IMO the Equinox is a better value. That said, by Canadian standards, financing on the ID.4 is currently very good and at purchase rates lower than the Equinox.

Definitely ID.4. I recently test drove both Equinox & Blazer and own Q4 e-tron & Model Y.
Blazer felt very heavy and truck-like. Equinox had extreme FWD bias with pronounced torque steer and a very strange top steering wheel position that was very uncomfortable. While I actually liked the big screens and GM software, VW drives much better and planted, it also features a cleaner design with a consistent and cohesive interior materials. I disliked cheap bits in Blazer and especially Equinox: door panels, air vents, etc.
Why have a power driver seat with no memory and only a single auto-dimming outside mirror in a $50K+ car?
Jumping back into Tesla and Q4 from either of the GM EVs made me feel better and at home.

I own a 2021 ID4. The back seat is very tight and uncomfortable for 3 adults. Its the hip room.

I own a blazer ev rs RWD, the best blazer EV. Because I own MYLR also it allows me to compare daily. I enjoy driving Blazer more fyi. The chill mode in model y and RWD is same and more than sufficient. Range is 50 -75 miles great in the Blazer(confirmed after 3000 miles and specific road trip we take normally. We have a 4-1/2 to 5 hour round trip that the blazer can make on a full charge. The awd rs is a dog btw slow and not enough range. Blazer needs better faster dcfc, suercharger access, frunk deeper larger lower trunk and phone as a key. GM your welcome please add/chamge for the 2026 model

My smartphone is a Google Pixel 6. I have the exact same 2024 Blue Chevrolet Blazer 2LT that is in this video. The GM infotainment is based on Red hat in car Linux and is running Android on top with google services with graphics from unreal engine. The integration of the infotainment is far better than Android Auto. So I don't miss it at all.
I looked at the ID.4 But a similar equipped ID.4 in Canada was more expensive and I just don't like the ID.4 interior. I also think the vehicle route planning, automatic battery conditioning (with manual battery conditioning option) is just better thought out in the Blazer EV. The heat pump in the Blazer EV is also nice to have here.
Performance wise the Blazer EV is fast enough. And the Blazer is a great road cruiser. I don't do a huge number of road trips a year (maybe three). And the Blazer EV charges fast enough for a rest stop. I've been averaging about 3.2mi/KWh (5.2kms/KWh) in my Blazer EV in rural county roads at 100km/h (62 mph) driving in decent weather.
I think the lack of Android auto and apple carplay really depends on the person. Some people want message notifications and dictation replies for all their apps. It also makes it easier to "sync" your progress in podcast and audiobook apps since it's just the same app running on the same phone. Finally was the future-proofing argument, since you can upgrade your phone Hardware but not your infotainment Hardware. So you can't switch to a better cell carrier, nor switch to "5.5G" and 6G when those become available.
$51000... I've just watched review of Geely Galaxy E5 which is a fraction bigger than ID.4 and will be available in 80+ markets. It only costs $15500~20500 in the Chinese market. Make it US compliant, add American features, shipping cost and it would still be below $30000.
Non-Tesla EVs in the US are way too expensive. They all rely on the $7500 subsidy to cover for their manufacturing inefficiency and dealer skimming
51k for any new vehicle is out of reach for the vast majority of new car buyers. It's insane! Who has 800+/mo just laying around like that to finance a car? 30k used to be a good target for good quality new car, now it's closer to 35k with ICE cars... but another 15k on top of that for a basic EV is madness.
I feel like to Ioniq 5 has the win here. Similar price, best charging, V2L, 2 free years of EA.

I think there is a right and wrong way to do a steering column mounted drive selector. Up should be forward and down should be reverse. I don’t think anything with a column selector switches between forward and reverse more than a forklift and they are up for forward and down for reverse. Clearly GM is trying to mimic a conventional column shifter where all the way up is park….but now, all the way up isn’t park and you don’t pull through reverse and neutral. So don’t be different, just be like a forklift and be predictable.

No apple or android auto is mainly a problem for IoS users. I think if you come from a BT only car this is no big deal, if you come from an android phone not a big deal. If you use lots of Google apps it might not be a big deal. Even from a Tesla to a GM, probably not a big deal. As an android user it's not a big deal.
I’d pick the EV with Car Play every time over one without it
My wife and i both drive EVs. Hers is a 2021 Mach-e, and mine is a 2021 id.4. We are both older, late 70s and wanted to own EVs for environmental reasons. While this review focuses on a feature analysis and the EV operating experience it may miss a serious problem with the VW. Our experience with dealer support from VW of America has been awful. The Ford dealer experience was initially disappointing, it has steadily improved and I know think Ford is fr better. I suspect that GM will also respond better to owners as they move forward. The VW of America experience has actually got worse over the 3 years of ownership. Software update is a joke in the id.4 world. The Ford and GM products offered seamless Plug and Charge (like Tesla) from day one. VW still does not do that after 3 years of promising. Features like Auto-hold are assumed for EVs, it took VW almost 2 years of ownership before they finally added that feature to the 2021 and 2022 cars.
So remember you are buying a dealer support network too. VW is not a good dealer network for EVs in America.
For International viewers should be usefull if measures could be shown in centimeters and kg. Think about.

I really wanted to like both of these cars, but sadly neither really do it for me. These manufacturers have to work on their packaging. They really should have a frunk. They really should have a heat pump. VW did update the software and infotainment system, and charging is a little better than it used to be. All that being said people would probably be better served waiting on a Model Y Juniper refreshed car. However the design compromises in the refreshed Tesla cars is a mixed bag and not a lot of peoples cup of tea. Hyundai/Kia should offer a wagon version of the Ioniq 5 and EV6. That would be interesting.
I'd take the Blazer, although I'd take the RWD with the bigger battery.
How about an ID7 Tourer or any wagon EV in the US. Has to be the most efficient shape, cheaper to build, and I can get something that has tires on it that won't cost me a kidney to replace.
I doubt the ID7 is that much less expensive (if at all) to manufacture than the ID4. Also don’t think tire cost is too significantly different.
ID.7 is very expensive, so it would not make sense that it is cheaper to build.
ID3 GTX for me. One SUV was enough for me.

The touch capacitive buttons, infotainment system "sliders", and the goofy window controls make VW a no go for me.

Have a '23 id.4, and looking at a Chevy, but our 2nd car a Tesla m3, I would get a Model Y over either of these two. The problems with the id4 - the software is absolutely awful, as is the phone app. The screwy window and volume and temperature controls are just idiotic and drive me insane, and of course the public charging system and it's software and navigation integration and ease of on the Tesla is literally 5 times better. Trunk space of id4 is very disappointing compared to a model y and of course no frunk. As for the Chevy lack of Android auto/carplay, having it on just drains the phone battery unless you charge it simultaneously and it is much slower and less responsive than the Tesla built-in software. Oh yes, one pedal driving is definitely the way to go and VW not having it is a big bummer.
I still can’t get over that VW took away driver door rear window controls. They add a toggle button to switch to rear windows, so they only save 1 total button. I’d never buy a ID.4 just for this reason. And, I’d never buy a car without CarPlay, so sorry Chevy and VW… I’d buy the Honda Prologue (knowing it is based off the GM/Chevy Ultium platform)
The current ID.4 is so much better as we road trip many times a year and like a nimble handling car.
Buy a KIA EV9 Long Range RWD instead. I got one instead of a Blazer with a better deal by going lease so you get the 7500 plus a lot of KIA incentives. You also get more luggage space and faster charging than any of the Chevy or WV models.

Why are we still comparing the blazer too vehicles that are smaller than it? This should have been a comparison between the equinox ev and the id 4, not the blazer.
Mainstream buyers will buy EVs if it meets 3 conditions. Condition 1 is that the cost of an EV has to be equivalent to a similar petrol vehicle. Condition 2 is that the range of an EV has to be equivalent to a similar petrol vehicle (especially in extreme weather conditions). Finally, the time to fully charge an EV is equivalent to the time that it takes to filling up a petrol vehicle with gas. For the mainstream buyer, this would simply be a plug and play where using an EV is no different to a petrol vehicle much like what hybrids are today to petrol vehicles. The point is to make the transition to an EV, easier. If there are too many limitations on how to use EV over a petrol vehicle, then the mainstream buyer will simply skip an EV.
These cars need to be priced around 32k if they want to compete for the actual masses. $50-60 grand is completely unreasonable

what even is the point of a big screen if I can't use android auto? And unless Chevy opens their software to third party security audits I'm not entering my usernames and passwords into that thing.
The GM infotainment is based on Red had in car Linux and is running Android on top of it with Google services with graphics using unreal engine. So it's basically a well integrated google tablet. So it's already using the same security as your devices.
It's running on android automotive, so basically the same security as what you probably already have put your password in to at some point
Id4 motor replacements are coded to the car so it’s a long wait for repairs and blazer has no CarPlay so you’ll buy a subscription. They both lose
Contrary to everone else, not having android auto is not a dealbreaker, especially since its fitted with android Automotive and thus has the same apps and google maps built in.
When going to service would you log them out and log back in?

I cannot parrot it enough, GM's insistence on Android/Apple-free infotainment will cause them to return to those systems from owner feedback or trade-ins, and trade to other makers. Personally I would put my money down on the VW, it meets every need.

GM’s Super Cruise works really well; however, the Tesla FSD Version 12.5 works better, as I have both, and FSD works on all roads, not just mapped ones.

GMs design is still thinking it is a gas ice vehicle. Designers need to think EV design. Stop putting a grill look.

Heating. It essentially reverses the flow of the system to provide heat instead of cooling. Without that EVs utilize resistive heaters which are less efficient (though sometimes quicker to respond).
