    The differences are so minimal, that you can get the same sound out of both. Great pedels, thx for the demo.

    The Black Russian is my favorite of all the Muff pedals. I’ve been fortunate enough to own a few of the original Muffs (Triangle , Green & Rams head ) and I always preferred the Black version. Christian Bland of The Black Angels described it best in his Premier Guitar Rig rundown “‘it’s thick and creamy like a milkshake “. - PureSalem Guitars

    • @dmleip6087
      @dmleip6087 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hell yeah. That Christian Bland rig rundown was the reason I bought my green muff. I would have loved to get the old black one but I’m on a budget. I do think the black one sounds a little better.

      Got a Black Russian as my first pedal in 2004. Lucked out and picked it out of a bunch of random distortion pedals because it just looked mean. Still my favorite to this day

    • @ioncewasmikey
      @ioncewasmikey ปีที่แล้ว

      @5T3LTH that's probably the same year I got mine. I was a big White Stripes fan at the time and the Sovtek was $40 cheaper than the US Big Muff lol. But I loved that thing. The footswitch went bad while I was in college (and broke) so I sold it to a pawn shop. Still regret that move.

    The Green Russian has the most mid-range of all the muffs. It will always sound fuller and it cuts through a mix better.

    • @BrewReview
      @BrewReview 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      This will affect ANY fuzz as it puts the pedal after the amps tone stack, thus allowing you to really shape how it sounds with the amp AND the pedal’s own EQ pot(s). However be wary, this sometimes has unintended and sometimes pretty inspiring consequences depending on how the loop is set up on a particular amplifier. Oranges typically use low self-gain tubes such as the AY7 variants which lend more of an un-interfered signal rather than a gain heavy and colorizing AX7 for instance.

    I think they're both great. I've had almost every newer production model Big Muff, and they're mostly great (except for the Nano). I've sold them all again, but I'm ever Muff-curious. 😂 I compared the Green Russian reissue to a Wren and Cuff Tall Font Russian and a green Russian bubble font Muff. They were very similar, slight tweaks on the knobs made every pedal able to sound the same. The Wren And Cuff lacked some volume, which the GR reissue has in spades. I'd take a Green Russian reissue any day, because of the space it saves on a pedalboard. I can definitely live with such a compromise.
    That being said, I'm holding on to my black Russian V8. It's just amazing!

    Excellent video, sir. Over the last 30 years my mileage has been that every big muff i've owned sounds different even if they technically identical circuits. There's variability in the components even out of the same batch with modern production much less 20-40 years ago. So pedals built over the many years will be different, reissue or not. I'd suggest buying several and you'll find a flavor that suits you. My personal opinion is that the big box ones tend to sound better and "feel" better when playing them which is something youtube videos don't translate well. I have found the big muffs react very different depending on what guitar i use and whether they have humbuckers or single coils. Some of my big muffs i enjoy more on my bass guitar. Bottom line: Big Muffs are awesome

      Dude I was about to comment the same thing! I always played my Black Russian through my Fender Twin and it sounded like a fucking freight train. Lots of punchy low end, hit you in the chest like a baseball bat.
      Set the volume on a Fender Twin to ~5 (as in painfully loud) and the muff’s sustain and tone down low and it kicks like a mule, or turn the muff’s sustain up high and it’ll go vroom like a Harley Davidson. Never got to sound like that on any other amp. So basically this is only possible at incredible volumes, but man it’s like nothing else.

    The modern thing these days is to go brighter. Pedals, amps, caps for the tone pot, everything. I wonder how much having digital stuff has contributed to the situation, now that we get further from tape and vinyl, and even CD.

    I basically used the Black Russian as a DJ FX pedal with my Danelectro Longhorn Bass and/ or Roland TR 606 Drum Machine… the tapers on it feel like a DJ mixer so it just makes sense… and they are obviously pretty “fast” moving pots… it’s the only Big Muff I ever had, and I’m not even a guitarist…. But for sure the stuff you can get out of an old 80s robotic drum machine made the thing sound like pure punk rock. I also used an overdrive pedal and an MXR flanger in my chain… years later I discovered it was the TR 606 that Julie Ruin/Kathleen Hannah/Bikini Kill used and duh. Of course. A distorted fuzzy 606 is the shit. What drew me initially to the 606 after having played bass for a year was, of course… kid606 who just happened to open for Mike Patton’s Fantomas in 1999. Epic show. LOTS OF FUZZ AND DISTORTION. much volume. SALUD.

  • @chayseblack4162
    @chayseblack4162 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Honestly I think that I’d have to go with the Black Russian as apposed to the Green Russian. Not only does it just have a fatter and almost fuller/duller fuzz tone, but with the tone knob dialed in to the perfect spot it just has a classic and fuzzy goodness to it.
    As for the Green Russian, it seems to have some more brightness to its tone. It seems like there’s possibly some more mids in the mix to the pedal. I’m sure that it would effectively help with cutting through in a standard band setting or mix.
    It’s kinda funny to me, I always expected the Black Russian to have this giant wall of sound fuzz tone while the Green Russian was more of a thick, warm and creamier fuzz. As for the two pedals in question, I’d love to hear them stacked together with some heavy drop C filth riffing. I think that the tone knob in the right spot on the Black Russian could really fatten up the sound while the Green Russian could double the thickness while also adding a nice layer of mids to the overall tone.
    That or just get a Black Russian and Triangle Muff and stack them together. I hear the Triangle is a pretty chaotic sounding variant of Muffs.

    I have always preferred The green Russian Big Muff over the Black one. More mids i think. . But its interesting that they sound basically the same at the extreme ends of the tone knob when the gain and volume is cranked. But only then.

Right now I'm checking out my new Demogorgon, I'm liking it so far. I like my Nano Big Muff I just got also. Getting the Pro co rat 2 next week. Then I think I'll be set for awhile. Thanks Steve.

    Had a couple of big ol black muffs over the last 20 years and while they sound great playing by yourself, they get lost in a band setting unless you mod, are using other things that boost certain frequencies, or use a bright amp. So green for me unless I’m farting around by myself

    I own one of those black Russian muffs. I love the tone, but I think the newer reissue would be more usable to most players who are after that sound. After buying it new around 10 years ago (it's probably one of the last ones) I've used it a lot, but it has limitations.
    The audio taper pot makes it a very all or nothing pedal, there's also a lot of play in the pots and they're now crapping out on me, leading me to use my Metal Muff w/ Top Boost instead (that pedal dooms crazy hard, please do a review). It also lacks a 9 volt adapter and eats through batteries like no tomorrow.

      My friend gave me his when he quit bass (yea, he used the black big muff on his five string bass....fucking intense haha) and I've used it so much over the years to get that heavy fuzz. loved covering Dead Meadow songs with it. Only thing is like you say, the pots are scratchy and it barely works now. Also, I literally just noticed today that the board has somehow completely disconnected and is kinda just floating around in there so it's gotta be taken somewhere to get fixed if I'm ever going to use it again.

    • @MoosicDude
      @MoosicDude 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@djlaureate1 The whole board should be screwed into the top of the case and held by the pots. Hopefully it would just be a case of screwing it back in if the original screws are rolling around in the housing still. Good luck man!
