    Didn't see anyone else mention that the original Sovtek isn't true bypass, and in my experience (I have 2) they suck a bunch of tone (particularly high end) when not engaged.. running the reissue into the unengaged Sovtek tank is actually going to be changing the tone, so not a totally accurate representation of how the reissue sounds. Would be cool to hear same comparison with the original box on a loop so it can actually be bypassed..

    I sold my Sovtek version for about $400 on Reverb and bought the EHX reissue. The reissue takes up less room on my pedalboard and sounds close enough to my sonically damaged ears. Plus, the input and output jacks on the Sovtek version are extremely fragile. I'm lucky mine didn't crack in the 25 years I owned it.

      That’s a big bonus of the reissue. I think with some light eq touches, the reissue can get close

    I love how you did this! The loop is a great way to dial in settings for a song. That said, I just ordered the green reissue and I’ll be doing this tone battle with that and my original black for fun.

    I love the reissue in its own right. It doesn't sound quite the same, but it sounds really close. And in that difference, there is uniqueness! I wish that people could see it that way. Even though I have the original (a black and green russian big muffs), I still wanna keep the reissue! There's some added compression and a tighter bottom end (probably less, but sometimes that is good). And the thing is so damn cool. I commend them for such an accurate reissue with such cool design choices (and the internal easter egg of Dopesmoker by Sleep!). You can keep the tank for the studio and the little bastard for the road

    In my experience-having owned a “Tall Font” Sovtek for 20 years before it was stolen in a smash’n’grab and subsequently trying to replace it-even the Sovtek ones sound different from one another. Apparently due to variations in the components EHX was sourcing from the former Soviet Union at the time. No two sounded the same.

    I got a good offer for my bubble font and I'm thinking about selling it, but I don't want to regret it so I've watched and rewatched this video at least 20 times trying to convince me that the new one isn't that bad...idk there'a something about the new version that still doesn't convince me fully.
    The reissue doesn't seem to have the melodic frequencies that the bubble font has, it doesn't seem to have that warmth that his mother born in 95 had

    • @sector328
      @sector328 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have the black Russian and bought the green reissue to save up space in the pedalboard. Welp, I ended up just rehousing the black Russian. They sound pretty close, definitely the same pedal and sound, but the original has more bottom and is overall dirtier. The reissue has more gain and more mid, sounds more modern to my ear and less dynamic

  • @thallrudedjentstorm1756
    @thallrudedjentstorm1756 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    The main difference with these two muffs in this video is the gain and distortion. The tank muff has less gain than the reissue. Also the distortion is slightly shifted. The distortion of the tank one is softer and less apparent. All those things make sense.. I have a ton of these and I studied them all. Most of these vintage units really are a bit different under the hood (part tolerances). The gain also affects the tone knob. I have units where the gain and distortion is so much shifted that the tone knob almost is completly bassy and only in the 1/turn "trebly". Ad for you geeks out there: No, these still have the original pots in there.
    So in context you could achieve the same tones from fiddling with the sustain and tone knobs. But still there would be a small difference there, because almost every tank muff has a shifted distortion. Has something to do with the clipping caps... That's this whole "the mids sound kinda different"-thing. haha Gain and Distortion. :) That's the secret
    Cheers!

      Hello! I’m not a green Russian expert, but isn’t the big box technically the tall font and the reissue is modeled after the bubble font? I have the reissue and use it occasionally with my bass rig but after hearing this video, I think I’d like that big box sound better. 🤝

    • @thallrudedjentstorm1756
      @thallrudedjentstorm1756 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@pirhala That's not how it works. They're basically all the same model. The differences in technical specs are minor. The main difference is the inconsistency leading to some big muffs sounding different from others. Even the same bubble font can sound different from a other bubble font. The thing is that no one really can tell what the difference is. I opened some of them and checked them out to the core and found out a lot of things. Those things of course can explain those sound differences. What I wanna say is, that if you like your reissue this doesn't mean that every other bubble font will sound like that. You just gotta try it and if it's bad, sell it. Generally vintage muffs sound different though. The midrange in most of them is very different. They sound more pleasing. I made one clone with "component-drift" and got it to sound like a vintage one. It's not impossible, but very time consuming. However, just go for it. Buy test it, play it, or sell it!

    • @thallrudedjentstorm1756
      @thallrudedjentstorm1756 ปีที่แล้ว

      Little Edit: If you play bass or have the tone knob completelly rolled of (no highs), then different muffs have almost no differences, except for loudness or gain.
      Cheers

    I remember back when I Didn't Know Jack about guitar stuff 20 years ago over 20 years ago and I was teenager and I thought that boss pedals were the best cuz I had some cheap generic pedals like rocktron and stuff that just weren't as good as my brother's boss pedals. Not a little crappy transistor amps that we thought were just what everybody used and we thought that two bands were only for old people doing old music. And this was the '90s when we were into like my brothers were a lot into Nirvana and I was into Alice in Chains was my favorite and soundgard and stuff like that. And we really started getting into guns and roses and lots of those kind of bands and we eventually found out that way to go. And eventually figure out that that boss post went the best I mean this was after I had bought several electrical harmonics pedals enlisted to them and thought they were a total garbage and I didn't like them they didn't have the power to sound or sound like any of the songs that I heard where you know they were used various recordings other than the Small Clone for Come As You Are by Nirvana I thought most of the pedals didn't sound anything like there's supposed to. Couldn't find out it's cuz I was using a little crazy transistor amp oh kill me you'll finally I went to my first tube amp of the Thunder red knob Super 60 with the 6l6 power tubes. it's one of the only Fender tube amp that I had ever played with more of an American tone. I never cared for the 6v6 tubes or el84 kind of stuff the blues and such. El34 for Marshall type tones 6 L 6 for more of your American amp types of Boogie and I discovered that almost all these two bands are garbage as far as I concerned at my point now all sorts of them that I had I mean the funner was pretty good that the PV valve king was cheap but I liked it. But there are certain amps that really sound and just super super powerful and just something I just sounded like Heavenly extra dimensional like Bogner and such. I discovered really the best sounding ass real tube amps have tube rectifiers. And that's when I discovered these electro-harmonic petals were in my opinion all the analog pedals are the best I think I mean boss pills are good for some people sound that sound they want or whatever but I don't like digital and I don't like the boss c o s m technology I have one boss pedal fantastic the love and I want to get another one cuz it's heavy and it's supposedly analog it's called the turbo Overdrive and it's pretty wicked. When I cranked up my knobs all the way up on my tall caster they had at the moment and I turn the knobs all the way up on the pedal and most of knobs up so I can get on one of my amps that has the two rectifier the last one I was using was my generic Harmony 303 a one power tube one preamp tube one rectifier tube is it 1962 with a Jensen speaker made in Chicago. For an old generic app it sounded fantastic there's no circuit boards and the two rectifier allows your guitar to sound more authentic to its own tone and the same thing with pedals and as such and every puddle I ran through the amp sounded so individual and life like that Russian big muff is mind-blowing is amazing on that amp and similar kind of. But his boss turbo overdrive cranked up all it could do is the song Spirit in the Sky by Norman Greenbaum? I was able to copy that insane tone perfectly it even sounded a little more Distortion a little more modern sounding than the recording but yeah I was just a wicked breaking up like crazy tone I mean really got to listen to this song Let's have a fresh memory of it to understand how crazy it is and I was able to work my Distortion out to all sorts of different weird shapes and forums and all sorts of stuff when I cranked up these little real old amps like that. Where all the new stuff was circuit boards all of me is ones that come with the facts even the ones that don't come with effects they have just direct fire chip trash I don't
