Jacob proves that the earliest influences play the vital part of how children grow up and to a great degree how they end up, so to speak. He had the wonderfully positive influence of his mother. How fortunate for the world. ❤

Not having a Dad around can also be an 'influence'. But, despite that, his Mum has done a truly wonderful job of encouragement.

One of your best, Simon. Such a beautiful image of a 2 year old seeing his mother’s arms conducting and experiencing the sound of music- that made me cry- how fortunate he was for that moment. My earliest memory is sitting on my mother’s lap during her lunch hour from working in the factory and smelling metal from her. That was one of my first sensory experiences. my mother smelling of metal. I was about 3 years old. What an amazing person that he has been able to unlock his creative force in his young life. I am 70 and want to have that experience before I make my departure- i believe that creative force is within all of us but it’s taken me so many years to awaken it. Thank you, Simon for all you do.

Regarding Jacob, I have listened to other "interviews" that turn into conversations, the questions flowing in both directions. He is always curious, always thoughtful and his play on Bartok was magical and an inspiration on your part. Thank you.

Jacob is smart enough, or curious enough, or playful enough to turn the megaphone around in order to collect input from his audience then disseminate back to them. He just might as easily put his ear to the megaphone as his mouth. That's brilliant! Thanks Simon.

"Working with what people don't know that they know, but they actually know it." Spot on.
I feel like there's so much more innate intelligence in all of us than we can possibly grasp, and we just need to keep finding ways to open and let it through. I feel this intelligence often gets bottlenecked in "knowing," the thinking mind, and inhibition, but sometimes we surprise ourselves. Here's to using our unique gifts to help allow more of our intrinsic collective brilliance spring to life!

On "classically trained" studying classical repertoire doesn't enable a musician to do what Jacob, or other Jazz and pop musicians do. It gives a pianist the ability to execute and interpret the classical repertoire (music which I personally love), essentially recitation. His work is very Jazz-centric. The thousands of hours spent learning tunes, re-harmonizing, composing, improvising, etc. are part of what enables him to play and write like he does. Just a point of clarification from someone who was "classically trained." Despite absolutely adoring the classical repertoire, I regret not taking a more active and collaborative approach to music making like Jacob earlier in life. Loved the interview!

    • @zitronekoma30

@@ffsrsw I don't really think that constitutes classical training tbh, it's definitely insanely valuable though

@@zitronekoma30 Jacob says he wasn't classically trained. I was, including conservatory. My main point is classical training should not put one on a pedestal. Generally speaking, it's simply a different style of music.

I personally didn't have the luck of getting formal classical training because I didn't have the discipline for it as a kid. But I did take a classical piece every few months to study. I, too, regret that. Over time, it became clearer and clearer how limited I am in self-expression. The ultimate form of self-expression is improvisation and composition. Sometimes we need to understand, especially coming from classical, that we don't need to be beethoven or jacob collier. The mere expression of ourselves benefits us immensly. Working on ear training for now, we'll see what happens...

If you've never seen Jacob live and experienced the audience choir from the inside, it's hard to convey just how little preparation there is. When you see a video online, there hasn't been five minutes of audience training earlier, he really does throw us in at the deep end and tell us which note to play by pointing in the air. And I was fairly confident I wasn't singing bang on the way Jacob would have done if he stood in my place, but here's the thing - everyone was singing something slightly different, but the average sound we all made *was* in tune. Together, all those imperfections made a beautiful thick chord and whilst we didn't sing the same notes, we all (in my section) moved in the same direction. So in the end, it was still coherent - and beautiful.

"The joy is the figuring it out" @40:55 Absolutely! I talk with friends on this all the time as a 50 year old man now. Also how as you age and your breadth of knowledge expands the wonderment in things gets smaller and smaller and then trying to find new and interesting things becomes tougher and tougher even though access to new knowledge has never been greater - which is probably due to option paralysis! What shall I learn today? .. erm I have access to ANYTHING.... its too much to choose from so I choose ... nothing. This conversation is so great and relevant. Thank you

Your last few sentences resonate strongly with me. I studied jazz piano at college, left a few years ago. I loved the course, but I really struggled with the fact that I have instant access to millions of recordings to transcribe and learn from. I found that in my own playing and that of my peers, our knowledge of jazz and music in general was broad but not deep. I think this is a symptom of the fact that everyone in the world now has Spotify, TH-cam, etc. People rarely sit down and listen to an album once, let alone multiple times. A few of my teachers have told me how when they were young they would be so excited to purchase an album on vinyl or CD, and they would play it to death until the language of the music became ingrained in them. The Internet truly is a blessing and a curse when it comes to inspiration for musicians and artists. I wonder how I would've fared before the Internet

This was and is absolutely amazing. I really needed this. I found out yesterday that my wife and I are having our first child, and that is after a year of fertility problems, which created so much tention and argunemt between us. The fact that i through this can find my piece within the chaos, gives me so much hope for my future child. I am a pianist myself, and the idea of play, was also very prevalent for me as a child, with my grandmother beeing a pianoteacher for 50 years now. After this interview i feel so much more ready for the future, so much better prepared and selfunderstood by the calm within the chaos. Thank you from the bottom of my heart and my future childs, which is going to be named Harmon for harmony. Much love from Denmark

I cannot fully describe what and how I felt at the end. Didn't quite catch the name of the composer of the song when Simon played it on the phone, I just know it has to be hungarian after a few bars. Obviously when they moved over to the piano I did get the name, but I digress.
All I want to say is thank you for that magical couple of minutes at the end, for some reason it meant to world to me.

Jacob is such a sweet and humble human being on top of being a genius. That ending was beautiful, playful, poignant, sad and happy all at the same time. What a beautiful human all around. Thank you for the inspiring conversation.

7:01 I died a little inside when Simon redirected Jacob's point about music, but alas, great interview!!!

Jacob is talking about metaphor...relating things to one another that are novel when he talks about experiencing words as a child and creating little explosions.

For me, creativity first needs a basic understanding of what has gone before, then a rebellion against it, then the motivation to replace it with something (better?). In physics, the replacement must achieve more than what it replaces.

No, Jacob is the violin because his consciousness is what his world is made of. But he knew that aged 2
