This pattern runs super big! I'm normally a size 4 so i used the smallest pattern measurements and it turned out probably 2 sizes larger than my normal size. My advice, make it much smaller than you think.
I did it! My first garment since high school home economics. It turned out decent, my fabric choice wasn't the best, but because it was my FIRST project I thought it'd be best to use something that wouldn't break my heart if I made a million mistakes. Bed sheets! 100% Cotton. I slept in the shorts so they are pretty wrinkled this morning as to be expected from natural fibers. Good instruction, I did have to watch it 10000 times so that I could understand what was going on, but made it pretty quickly considering I am a crocheter and a single project can take weeks. It's amazing that I can complete something in a matter of hours. Love this hobby. Thank you for the free pattern and video! The pockets do hang low on the inside and peek out every now and then.
As someone who loves to sew bags but is a beginner with garments, I really appreciate this! A great one to build confidence on so I can make some of your amazing dress patterns in the future!
TIPS: Fold your fabric with slavage ends together and flip the printed side of the front pant stencil down. Back side stays printed side up. If you like to wear your pjs at the hip, remove 3 inches from the top part of both front and back stencil. I also added 3 inches to the length on both. I definitely used more than 1 yard for this with the size 4. Design runs pretty big.
Thank you for this. I'm making an 8-10 size right now any I'm having to make adjustments. I'm REALLY short waisted so the crotch on these wouldn't start until halfway down my thighs. I'm playing around with the pattern to take out some of the middle and I'll probably add on a bit of length as well. ❤
@@calliehagoodI’m pretty long wasted and the size 4 is very high waisted on me. It’s okay because I like high waisted pants and wanted that, this is honestly a trial run as first attempt at pants and this seemed easy enough. If you’re short waisted you’ll probably have to take a lot off of the top.
@TotallyxKatiee I took quite a bit off the top. 4 inches at least. My "waist" from the top of my hip bone to the bottom of my ribs is only about 1". 😂 thankfully I have long legs.
I just finished making them. An absolute novice to sewing this was so doable. I'm ridiculously proud of myself for finishing something and it actually being wearable!
For a “tag” so that she could discern front vs back, When I used to sew my little ones play skirts, I would take a 2 or 3 inch piece of 1/4 inch ribbon. fold it into a loop and sew the cut ends into the stitch of the waist. Nothing special but did its job. ☺️
Today was my first day of making shorts successfully thanks to your video and patterns. You wouldn’t believe how thrilled I was to be able to make an article of clothing through sewing. When I watched 2 other videos from 2 people I was frustrated and almost gave up. I found your video the most helpful, easy to follow, and it gave me hope that making clothes was possible for me. I thank you and God for giving me inspiration and hope!❤😊😊😊
I just made these today, and they turned out perfect! I used a size above my normal size so they would be loose fitting, and cut the elastic to just fit my waist so it wouldn’t be cutting in. Thank you!!🖤🖤🖤
I decided to try this out as I'm new to sewing. As recommended in the comments, I did make it about 2 sizes smaller and it turned out perfectly! :) I also partially attached the pockets to the front side since they get weighed down and show when you put something in them. Thanks for the easy tutorial! ♡
Thank you for teaching us how to sew! I am so excited about the possibilities that are ahead. I am picky about what i wear and it is hard to find what you want exactly. Your style is what I look for but so hard to find or it costs much more than I am willing to pay. Making it would be great. You get to pick out everything. Sleeves, neckline, length, fullness, fabric, etc. I look forward to sewing with confidence soon thanks to you. Thank you for your generosity.
I just made a pair! Thank you so much! My first ever garment! I broke the rules a little and used a spandex/cotton blend because I wanted something super comfy and stretchy so it was definitely more challenging but now I can finally sleep comfortably!! (I couldn't find a pair of shorts in stores that I liked).
i just made my first pair of shorts thanks to your video, the first project that actually worked for me im so happy. thank u so much it feels good to wear something i made from scratch !
I started making this about a week and a half ago and only have the hemming left!! This is my first sewing project ever and it's been so exciting to see it come together little by little ❤ thank you so much Janelle for your step by step tutorial and pattern!! It has been a joy! 😊
Just finished! It was a disaster. Idk where I lost track of your instructions, but I’ll be trying again this weekend with a different fabric. You were right though, they’re pajamas so I can still wear them at home judgment free 😅
Thank you for the pattern. I’m glad I’m not the only one that cuts outward triangles at the notches, I ‘ve never understood how most on utube snips in towards the seams.
I took 2 beginner sewing classes and this was my first project on my own without any help. At first, I was terrified by how huge the shorts looked but once I added the elastic everything came together perfectly! I did have to trim the pockets down as they were sticking out of the bottom of the short leg but otherwise this tutorial was SO easy to follow and the free pattern is so appreciated!!!

Since I’m a mom of 2 I had to take a few weeks to do this one step at a time but I finally finished this pajama shorts project!! So, my only qualm is that it is super baggy even though I cut the pattern to my size. Like REALLY baggy- but maybe since this is my first project it’s just not going to be perfect lol Thanks for being the best sewing class ever!!
Hi Janelle! Thank you so much for this video. I just started learning to sew, and my first ever project was these shorts! I have made 2 pairs of PJ shorts for two of my friends using your pattern and video. They both love them! Thanks so much for helping new people like me get into sewing!
I'm not a beginner but I saw this video right before I was going to go to bed and watched it :) I've been planning on making myself pyjamas for a while and I'm finally going to do it this week !!
I found out our printer was broken so I couldn’t even print the pattern but I followed your instructions and my shorts turned out well despite me having a lack of good equipment 😂 thank you for this!
This is the first video I watched from you and I love it! In contrast to a lot of other sewing tutorials here on YT this is relaxing and aesthetic instead of stressful. I think your pacing is really good - you show every step in detail while still keeping it short enough to not tire or overwhelm anyone. I love your style and way of talking, too. all in all, thank you very much! started sewing last year and unfortunatewly not in possession of a printer, but I'm gonna go and try to draft my own shorts pattern and do it anyway!
my mom is a designer and she basically makes a lot of dresses, seeing these videos make me so happy bcoz I know the resources are all provided to me and using the machines are so fun omg.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I just made my first pair of pj shorts using this video and the pattern. I absolutely love it! Gonna be making more :) I was a bit worried about the sizing and emailed Janelle who got back to me promptly. Thank you Janelle!! Looking forward to sewing more of your patterns
threading elastic is my least favorite part of creating new items. But i recently started using those extremly long crochet hooks - thread it all the way through and grab the safety pin and pull it through. Makes it so simple! Excited to make a couple pairs of these in some fabric i thrifted!
Followed this. This is my absolute first day of sewing. I'd say difficulty is 4.5/10 for a complete newbie. Sewing curves is hard. The fabric didnt line up for me i think bc i cut it wrong. Sewing the elastic part was tricky. I didnt do pockets. im planning to do this again and again until i get it right.
I love this! I recently started learning sewing, going to a local sewing course and was looking for fast and easy projects for practice and this looks perfect! Off to trying this, I hope I manage. You make it look so easy Edit: I've made it! Like one of the comments below, everything went wrong, hahaha! But still I managed! With your instructions the steps are very easy to follow, every problem came from my own inexperience and my super cheap sewing machine. The shorts ARE a few sizes big though; I'm size 38 to 40 (in European sizes ofc) and I made it to be 36, it's still big! I could have gone for the smallest size
I just printed out and cut the pieces out! I’m not a “beginner,” but I was looking for a super easy shorts pattern. Thanks so much and I can’t wait to make these for summer wear!
@@carinabuniak hi yes I got it right away. I didn’t have a notification that I did, so I just went into my email and typed in Rosery apparel. It popped up in my email search. You might need to check your spam just in case it sent there.
I have made 3 pairs of these now, they’re great. The sizes are quite generous so I went for the smallest size for me (10-12 in ready to wear sizing) and they are still large, but not too big. A waist tie works well if you sew two buttonholes in the front waistband and thread twill tape through. Two of the pairs I made for males and didn’t have to adjust the pattern as the shorts are so roomy. They like them. I also moved the pocket bags up by about an inch as otherwise you can see them poke out from the shorts when your hands are in them and I don’t love that. Otherwise great free pattern, thanks Janelle!
Hey! I really like this plan to start sewing. I was wondering if there is a video where you show how to do the zigzag on the border instead of overlocking.
If your petite, these will be giant 😭 heres some tips: Place the pockets higher up by like and inch or 2, make them half as small, and lower the waist line. Loved this project tho. Will be making two more! :D
I thought this was the case! I measured my waist and hips several times before choosing the pattern cut and they came out enormous and after hemming the shorts to get them to be shorter the pockets poked out of the bottom. You have a great idea on the adjustment.
Tip for placing the patterns so they follow the grain line: Measure from the edge (or the fold) of the fabric to the grain line marking on the pattern. Make sure the measurements are the same at 2-4 places (depending on the length of the piece)
This is my first video in your series. I’m just getting back into sewing and this was super easy to follow, the pattern is really nicely done and I had a ton of fun. Instantly subscribed! 😊
I just bought my first sewing machine and sewed one line before making this. Point is the pattern is very easy to follow and great to learn on. 🎉 BUT IT RUNS RIDICULOUSLY LARGE please believe I saw a comment and sized down one to an eight. The size eight was closer to a 12 or 14
Very easy to follow video tutorial! But I have some pointers/ tip for anyone else making this: 1. It runs big, like at least 2 sizes too big when I made it from my own measurements. 2. I found them to be too long so i shortened them ca 3 cm which made the pockets stick out the bottom hem, so I had to resew the pockets after. 3. I had to cut off 4 cm of the top because they were again, way too big, And they're still very much high waisted. hope this helps someone else trying this pattern!
Just what I was looking for since my pajama shorts are getting old now and it is also hard to find pj shorts made from 100% cotton, thank you so much ! Hope you are having a good time in Japan
I don’t even own a sewing machine yet…but you make this look like even a beginner could could have a shot at making this. Can’t wait to make something!!!!
You can totally make these as a beginner 😊 And you can sew them by hand also. It will take more time, especially finishing the seam allowance so they don't fray, but absolutely doable.
THANK YOU!!!! I’m building costumes that have shorts…and it was looking real silly at first. Even the instructions in the pattern didn’t explain much lol. Oh man you saved me so much time!
I am a super beginner and I made these last night. They were fun to make and I am going to make them again right now because the ones I made are too big. Tips on figuring out more accurate sizing would be good.
What is meant by “front sides facing” front sides facing…up, front sides facing… each other? Pretty sure I’m about to sew these pockets facing the wrong way lol.
She means front sides facing each other... the first time I tried this I thought she meant front sides both facing up, and I ended up with a pair of shorts that was inside-out on the back... lol
Hi Janelle, thank you for this free pattern. I've made a few in different material. I would love it if you could do a tutorial on pattern matching. I made a pair this morning using material with a check pattern and thought I'd matched it up well but the squares and lines don't match up at all. It's no big deal since I only wear the shorts at home but I'd love to know how you were able to match up your squares and lines so perfectly. Thanks
Whenever I’m making Ang elastic waist like that I secure the elastic so it for sure won’t roll. After I finish putting the elastic in, and see up the casing I run a straight stitch over the waistband at every seam. It’s fairly unnoticeable, and won’t allow the elastic to roll.
This series has been so helpful, Janelle !! Excited to make my first piece of clothing ! I am thinking of adding a bit to the length. Thank you for the free pattern !
I’m so happy to hear you’ve found these videos helpful! I’ve added a lengthen line on the template pieces to make lengthening them easier 😊 Have fun making them!
Hallo Janelle, many thanks for this pattern. Unfortunately the shorts are way too big. I sewed them according to your measurements. I will sew the pattern 2 sizes smaller and then it will fit. Warm Greetings from Germany
i cant thank you enough!!! i used your tutorial and pattern to actually make pants for a cosplay! thank so much for the inclusive sizing and simple video :))
Hi, absolutely love your tutorial! I generally have a fairly big bum and when I make my shorts, they often feel uncomfortable as they are tightish and low in the back and loose and high in the front. Any suggestions on how to fix this or videos to watch?❤
I made one sort of copying some pants which fit. Now I'll try your method and get some (i suspect) that look decent and fit well, unlike the ones I made earlier.
New subscriber I don't know how to use a sewing machine yet but wish i did these are gorgeous just my style love your work I hand sew alot need lessons for machine..
Such a great tutorial. I recently purchased some of your dress patterns but haven’t been brave enough to try any yet, think I’ll give these a go first! It would be lovely to get some recommendations for patterns for a matching top if you haven’t already got a video in the pipeline for this 😊
I just wear mine with t-shirts! Here’s a tutorial I’ve shared if you want to make one to go with the shorts: th-cam.com/video/wQYzbqfRHwI/w-d-xo.html&feature=shareb
Definitely planning to make these shorts! I have also watched your videos on how to make gathered and tiered skirts, and I have some eyelet fabric that I'd like to make a skirt out of but it would need a lining. Would you consider making a video at some point on how to add a lining to a garment when sewing with a sheer or eyelet fabric? Love all your videos!
Thank you so much. I appreciate this a lot. I have a lovely skirt I wanted to turn into a simple shorts. Will definitely tag you when I finish make it❤
Just made these adorable pajama shorts! Great video and instructions! I would like to make them smaller than your smallest pattern size 4, about 2 sizes smaller. Any suggestions on how to make the pattern smaller?
My advice would be to have a look at how she made the size smaller from say a 12 to a size 8 and then replicate this by removing the equivalent amount off the size 4, I'm not sure if it will work but worth a try! (I know you posted this a while ago haha)
These cute shorts are just right for summer! I wanted to drop a quick message to let you know that I’ve featured your tutorial on Crafts on Display, hope you enjoy it! ♥
When you zigzag stitch, you leave a little bit of a seam right? Just so you have enough fabric to comfortably work with? And do you snip the edges after you zigzag?
I have one suggestion: I followed every step and found that in the end, when I wanted to sew the shorts together, the back and front wouldn't line up... After a lot of hard thinking, I understood, that the mistake was in the cutting of the pieces. It didn't say in the video or on the pattern, that you needed to turn the pattern to cut out the second piece of one back/fron piece... Because I'm not experienced, I didn't know that you had to do that. Now, I have very crooked pants, because I didn't have more fabric to fix my mistake. So, small adjustment, but this information is missing in the pattern/video. The rest is very well explained, thank you :-)
She sort of does, but doesn't get into why. When she says to fold your fabric in half and cut the pattern, it's because in doing so the fabric becomes a mirrored image when you cut.
Can’t wait to get my pattern I’ve been wanting to learn for the longest .. I have two sewing machine and haven’t used any of them because it’s so intimidating and I don’t know where to start as far as a easy pattern to follow .. 😣

Measure from the edge (or the fold) of the fabric to the grain line marking on the pattern. Make sure the measurements are the same at 2-4 places (depending on the length of the piece)
Good idea. Thanks.
I’m making mine now just printing the pattern and re-watching your video
Thank you for the pattern ❤
I touched a sewing machine for the first time 2 weeks ago and I was able to make these 🎉🎉 fantastic pattern and video! Thank you soo much
can you tell me what size was the paper that you printed the pattern on?
@@wasabi.whipppit was just standard printer paper that I taped together following the instructions
Thank you for the pattern, as not being a beginner i was checking out for a shorts pattern which can be quickly put together.. It looks great!..😊
This is my first video in your series. I’m just getting back into sewing and this was super easy to follow, the pattern is really nicely done and I had a ton of fun. Instantly subscribed! 😊
same here!! she seems to be awesome!
I just bought my first sewing machine and sewed one line before making this. Point is the pattern is very easy to follow and great to learn on. 🎉
BUT IT RUNS RIDICULOUSLY LARGE please believe I saw a comment and sized down one to an eight. The size eight was closer to a 12 or 14
Very easy to follow video tutorial! But I have some pointers/ tip for anyone else making this:
I made these in 2 days and they’re so comfy🥰
Just what I was looking for since my pajama shorts are getting old now and it is also hard to find pj shorts made from 100% cotton, thank you so much ! Hope you are having a good time in Japan
You’re so welcome! Have fun making them x

Uniqlo airism is great
Thanks for the tip for ribbed elastic for pants 👍🏻😊
I don’t even own a sewing machine yet…but you make this look like even a beginner could could have a shot at making this. Can’t wait to make something!!!!
You can totally make these as a beginner 😊
And you can sew them by hand also. It will take more time, especially finishing the seam allowance so they don't fray, but absolutely doable.
thank you for this! I thrifted a cute frilly pajama top but it has lost its shorts pair so I'm just going to make my own one using matching fabric.
THANK YOU!!!! I’m building costumes that have shorts…and it was looking real silly at first. Even the instructions in the pattern didn’t explain much lol. Oh man you saved me so much time!
I adore this tutorial! The colour scheme is beautiful. Maybe I could make these as drawstring shorts instead
Im gonna try to do drawstring as well (which might be a little ambitious bc this is my first garment project)
Hi I love your videos! Can you do one on how to properly measure yourself and choose a size
Thank you so much for the free pattern!! This is so exciting and such a great project. I'm so excited to make it, as patterns can be expensive
I am a super beginner and I made these last night. They were fun to make and I am going to make them again right now because the ones I made are too big. Tips on figuring out more accurate sizing would be good.
what size was the paper that you printed the pattern on?
What a lovely fabric!
Warm Greetings from Germany
i cant thank you enough!!! i used your tutorial and pattern to actually make pants for a cosplay! thank so much for the inclusive sizing and simple video :))
ooh what did you cosplay, if I may ask?
This is so helpful i've made them so much! love your content! 🌻
Beginner sewing enthusiast here, this tutorial was so helpful. Thank you so much for explaining it easily.
You’ve just gained a new subscriber 😊
I love watching your videos. I'll have to try to make these.
Thank you! Have fun making your own pjs 🧡
I’m making these for me and my friend group I hope they like them!
Also thank you for making it so easy to follow along!
i’m having trouble printing mine out, it keeps making it on one sheet and really small. what did you do?
@@kathansenofficial I printed it out on small sheets and I lined them all up and then cut the fabric
Hi, absolutely love your tutorial! I generally have a fairly big bum and when I make my shorts, they often feel uncomfortable as they are tightish and low in the back and loose and high in the front. Any suggestions on how to fix this or videos to watch?❤
Have been looking for such pattern, thank you very much 🤗🙏🏻 ²⁷⅔
I made one sort of copying some pants which fit. Now I'll try your method and get some (i suspect) that look decent and fit well, unlike the ones I made earlier.
Oh these are so cool. I’d like to make us all a matching pair or two lol. I’ll wear a singlet, living with my three boys hahaha. Thanks Janelle! ❤😂❤
At 3:22 does she say right side of the fabric facing up or down? Do i have to sew the pockets with pattern side up or down? Thanks
I have that same question as I thought she said right side up so I did that and now one is right side facing and the other is wrong facing 😅
I had the exact same issue til I realised she just says 'facing', as in facing each other!
Making elastic pj pants was my first project we were given in my 9th grade sewing class.
Thank you Janelle, will be making the shorts for Xmas presents.
Such a good idea! 😍
Made these the other day and they turned out pretty good! Only my 3rd sewing project so thanks for the great video and pattern!
can you please tell me what size was the paper that you printed the pattern on? i’ve been confused
Just standard 8.5by11 inch. Then you fold at the lines and tape them together.
Very cute, Janelle. I will make these.
The tag is so cute, I'll have to find some
Love...love...love those clothes behind you❤
Thank you! I’m pretty proud of my rack of me-mades 🧡
Thank you so much. I appreciate this a lot. I have a lovely skirt I wanted to turn into a simple shorts. Will definitely tag you when I finish make it❤
Can’t wait to see! 😍
Hi Janelle, i love this video. And thank you for the pattern. Know i get more ideas, but i love it.
@@marlenekelly3906 I must have missed it, thanks for the clarification :-)
@@Alogria I wish I had seen this, I made the same mistake!
Can’t wait to get my pattern I’ve been wanting to learn for the longest .. I have two sewing machine and haven’t used any of them because it’s so intimidating and I don’t know where to start as far as a easy pattern to follow .. 😣
You also matched your plaids!!!
This is the only video that helped me, thank you ❤
