How to draft and sew these 1-hour SHORTS-CULOTTES! Super easy and detailed drafting tutorial!

- Dear Sewing Friends, in this video I would love to share with You how I draft these super easy wide leg short/culottes for summer. Now, this is such a versatile item in your wardrobe as you can make these to wear out OR make these to wear at home as PJ shorts! Possibilities are endless when it comes to pockets as well, you can choose to do side seam pockets or patch pockets as well! PLEASE NOTE: these are not patterns for clothes and garments, these are instruction sheets. Step-by-step written instruction on how I drafted this or that project, so that you can follow along. The templates are ONLY for the small projects, like a basket, or coaster, or towel wrap and etc. I have also created sewing reference sheets and practice sheets, as well as sketches that you can use and some small scale garment parts that you can use to practice "slash and spread" techniques and dart manipulations. Instruction sheets are focused on the drafting process and less on the sewing sequence as that is shown in the video. Sewing steps can be sometimes written out, and sometimes referenced back to the original video. Additional Members Extra videos go into fabric selection, extra tips and tricks, best practices and some additional ideas from me. I try to prioritize Members comments, especially if there is a question. I try to post EARLY ACCESS videos for Members, meaning those are videos that you can watch earlier than anyone else and without ads :) Every week I post Members ONLY sneak peeks. We also have Members Only FB group for sharing project pictures and inspiration. I am not a teacher and this is not a course or a program.

WHAT TO DO:
1) new window with Membership trailer will pop-up (IF you DON'T see a pop up, 3 things are going on: you need to update your internet browser, check the pop-up blocker on your web browser and disable it or if you're an Apple user you might not see it as well)
2) this pop-up window will tell you all the perks and price
3) TH-cam takes care of the payment. I do not process, nor I can see the payment info or any other specific information regarding that, if you have a question regarding payment processing - please kindly reach out to to TH-cam Help Desk.
5) If you watch from Apple (Ipad and etc) - Membership display is limited, meaning you still get all the perks, but you won't see the Membership tab after you join. Read below how to access the perks.
6) Once you have joined - head over to the MEMBERSHIP tab on my channel homepage to get the links to all of your perks! You will need to click on green "click to show perks" and the list will open up. ALSO - head to the Community tab to see latest Members Only Sneak Peek and additional info - Apple users, here you will find Members Extra videos posted. Click on any of the Members Extra videos and go the info box to that video - all Members Perks are listed there. Yay! :)
IF you clicked on the Google DRIVE link and all you see is 4 folders but you can't open them or you open them and they are empty (usually happens to Apple users) then you most likely have to clean your cache or enable some functions on your Ipad. Everything is working, all things are available - I am not tricking you. You just need to google for possible answers and see why google drive isn't displayed correctly on your device, it does not happen to every Ipad, but unfortunately I can't help you more as I am not an Ipad user. I have asked my friend to double check it for me - and Google Drive opens up smooth on her Ipad.

I wanted to take a moment to sincerely thank you. I have wanted to learn how to sew clothing ever since I was a kid. However, I was always afraid I could never do it. I stumbled across this video the day it came out and the tutorial seemed like it would be so easy. I decided to give it a try, I always get so hot in the summer and have a hard time finding shorts that work well for my long legs and don't chafe. I was actually able to draft the pattern and make them! These are seriously the most comfortable shorts I have ever had and I can't wait to experiment with different fabrics. Thank you so much!

I'd like to give you a double thumbs up on this video because you explain the whole process of drafting and making these shorts so thoroughly that even a beginner (at least for pant type sewing) can follow your pattern and end up with shorts we can wear. Unfortunately, TH-cam doesn't have a way to express more than a single thumbs up. And thank you for including pockets large enough to be useful. I am now a new subscriber, and it only took one video.
Your tutorials are so motivating for novices or those getting back to sewing now as an adult from our teen years! For me I will not share that time! I always loved sewing especially when I was overseas. As an active duty Army medical, I am now retired after twenty years, during my pregnancy and working clinics there were no really ease access for scrubs to just nice office wear for me. So, I took a PJ pattern and made my two piece top and bottom for my time being pregnant. I was amazing with the reviews I had gotten. I just adjust sleeves to neck line or color with same pattern to make additional outfits. So it was so great going on the local market and picking out materials. One material for a summer outfit and not for work I found a nice sheet that was gorgeous to use! No one ever new.
I've been drafting & sewing shorts for YEARS and never end up with a decent fit (plus size). this time I followed your instructions and added/removed just a bit more to allow for plus size. My shorts are absolutely PERFECT for the first time ever! You are wonderful and I so appreciate you sharing your knowledge. Love and hugs from Waiheke island, New Zealand.😁

I am liking the idea of shorts now! I was also thinking that I could use the technique for making adjustments on pant patterns I own that I’ve been reluctant to make due to getting the fit just right!

I'm halfway through the shorts just have to do the waistband! So excited to try these. I used my serger for everything except the understitching, and the waistband ruffle. This what it looked like you did as well in the video. This is my first "serger" project. I really enjoyed your video and the Instructions. I had been doing some pretty serious sewing and I had a burnout on a pair of pants that I couldn't get to fit right with the facing. That was before spring I just now got my sew-jo back.

I have never been a good sewer, and I have always struggled with patterns, so I decided to make these shorts. You inspired me to tackle my fears and just dive in. Let me say that it took me 8.5-9 hours, not 1. Having made a pair, I can see some things I did wrong that slowed me down or were somehow mis-measured, and hopefully by the time I've made it a few more times I'll be faster. :-) Also, I'd like to mention for newbies like me that I used a t-shirt weight knit, and it was hard to work with because its edges kept rolling up. I should have used a little heavier fabric. But I love the series and seeing how you break down the measuring and drafting does help me understand what's going on. Thank you!!!

I made these today! I used a fabric that has been used to cover an ottoman, and to cover the rest on my knee scooter. I found a good size piece of the fabric hidden in my stash. It was going to be a test pattern. I only had enough for one side.
For reasons I have forgotten. It was 2 identical pieces sewn RS together in a rectangle. I had enough to do the test pattern!
I love the elastic gathered at the top . I tried them on … I love them!!!
They fit perfectly. Love them to bits!

Thank you so much for this. I’m slim and in proportion but 6’2” so getting any clothes that fit really well can only be done by making them myself or spending a fortune that I don’t have. When I was a young teenager I had to make all my trousers because I simply couldn’t buy them to fit. I’m moving back to making my own now that I’m retired and have the time so this channel is a real help. Thank you again. 😁

I finally gave this a try and they turned out great! I used two old t-shirts with different color to make a pair of colorblock shorts. If I messed up, they can be my pajama shorts. I cut the front and back pieces from the bottom portion of t-shirts so I don't need to hem at the end ☺️. I then cut 4 pieces of waistband from the top portion of t-shirts so waistband is also color-blocked. I just love this pattern. You make it so easy to follow. The sewing instruction is detailed and clear. Thank you very much!!!
It is straightforward! I’m making these tomorrow. I can’t wait. I think that I’ll make them a little longer-I can wear them to work. I teach kindergarten in South Carolina. It will still be very hot when we return to school. With the right materials, I think they would be cool and still look professional. I do a lot of bending over, kneeling, and sitting on the floor-perfect! Thank you👍

Ah, thank you! I am a little shy about my legs above the knees, so that length is something I can live with - he he :)
I made these and they came out great! I made one alteration. I added 4 extra inches to the height of the original rectangle compensate for my larger belly and backside. This allowed a 1.5" waist band to already be attached. I folded over the top edge and turned under 1/2 inch to sew down. The waistband was 1 inch wide.
I also want to try making pants from my pattern now.

Great tutorial, can you please advise how I can make something like this, allowing for the fact that my hips are approx 10" wider than my waist. So it is impossible to pull the fabric over my hips, if the waistband is cut to just fit. Thank you

hi alisa followed your instructions and I have just made a top from your basic woven bodice and sleeve it is perfect except for the neckline it is like there is too much fabric in the shoulder at the neckline its riding up can you advice me which of my measurements I got wrong that would cause this thank you
from what you said I would assume you just need to shorten the high point shoulder measurement of the front piece, or play around with overall shoulder slope. But I would see of my front pattern piece high point shoulder is a bit too high :)
also, not sure if you saw that in the video - but if you have bust on a larger side - a dart is a must as it is extremely tricky to make a woven bodice block without darts that is not a straight cut rectangle, but still - play around with the measurement I mentioned above and the tutorial for bodice block with darts will be out soon!
