    ⚡ 💀 💕 / 💀 💀 💀
'BABYMETAL DEATH' was used as their concert opener for quite a few years, and returned once Momometal was added as a new member.
I saw BABYMETAL open for KoЯn in Chula Vista, CA back in 2017.
The concert was on Yui's Birthday on June 20th.
There were KoЯn fans on either side of me, who were expecting something called BABYMETAL to be pretty mellow.
They opened with 'BABYMETAL Death'. : )

You really need to watch the Legend of 1997 version. Su gets mounted on a cross and the head of the statue you see in Gimme Chocolate and Head Banger comes off , a homeage to And Justice For All from Metallica. Seriously

Thirded. The Legend 1997 full version is a unit in the heavy metal scene. JON HOUSE don't make a reaction if you don't have time for it but this is a must see.

A song that needs to be seen to be really appreciated, especially Legend 1997 version for the theatrics, but Toyko Dome spectacular entrance performance and PIA Arena 2023 performance stand out, and i love this one as well .
This is the song they usely use as an entrance onto the stage and certainly hypes the audience 🔥🤘🏼🦊🤘🏼🔥 #notacult 😁

I like to imagine what it must have been like when people heard this album for the first time back then when it was released. I mean, the singles they had released at that point were heavy, but not like this. It must have been quite a WTF moment for those who were expecting an album of Doki Doki Mornings. :-) At least for those who didn't know their live shows.

Thanks for this reaction. Strictly speaking the song is called Babymetal Death, a song by Babymetal.
As the lyrics are a pun and meant as an introduction in a metal way, it's the first song on the first album and how they open performances. It's just so much fun seeing them perform at a metal festival, hard metal heads in the crowd wondering what are these kids gonna deliver at a metal festival (maybe even wondering what are these kids doing here at all) and then they open with this track. The metal heads in the audience take notice. 🙂
So... at this concert it was the second day of 2 days at Budokan, I think the Budokan you were referring to was Budokan 2021 performances, this was their first time at Budokan, in 2014.
Budokan is the "Madison Square Garden" of Japan. Babymetal set the record for youngest (average age) female act at this famous venue.
So... this was the opening song, that crowd was _engaged_ from the start !
You are not wrong about the cardio, this song has all the hardest dance/jump elements of the first album in the first song they perform. Let's just say: Babymetal didn't do any warm up in their early years. They used this song for that.
The song choreography and introduction is for 3 members, so they did not use this song when Babymetal was just 2 members, so when Yuimetal could not perform and after that left, we did not get Babymetal Death, however when Momometal officially joined, 1 of the first songs they used was this song: in this case to show, introducing the new Babymetal.
PS Legend 1997 is a performance to react to. 🙂

Great double feature as always. Thanks!
As said, song's name is "BABYMETAL DEATH" and it's actually a pun with the Japanese word "desu" (meaning I am or we are) which (mispronounced) sounds pretty much like the English word "death". So, the song tittle translates by "We are BABYMETAL" and they are basically introducing themselves.
They premiered it live in July 2012. It was their show opener until 2017 and it is again once Momometal joined as an official member.
Kobametal has full credits for both the music and the lyrics. So, the references to Metallica and Dream Theater are fully justified, being two of his favorite bands.
    🤘🦊

nice reaction Jon-Metal, when a reactor does a double feature of BMD, it usually includes the "Legend 1997" version, simply because it's the most metal thing to do in a theatrical setting, and when you see it, you will know what I mean by most metal thing to do, imagine a 16 year old Su-Metal giving her mortal life to be reborn as a metal goddess, or the "Legend S" version, imagine a 20 y/o metal goddess sacrificing herself in a baptizm of fire to become the messiah of the golden generation, here's an idea Jon, a BABYMETAL Death triple feature, starting with Legend 1997, followed by "Legend S Baptizm XX" and ending with Live at PIA Arena Clear Night, for the explosive experience you could have next month when they are touring the USA.

Its often the opening track of most concerts. Get the crowd hyped up for the rest of the night, when I saw them last year in Melbourne they followed up with Megitsune straight after.

Nice double feature! I was just as hyped as they opened the concert I visited last year with BABYMETAL DEATH (avoid nitpicking 😜). Such a great opener! Contrary to some opinions expressed in the comments, I´m totally fine with the choice of the live version. The "Legend 1997 Apocalypse" version is the hardest banger on a theatrical level though, so you should react to that one separately, too! You´ll be blown away by it, promise! 😄
The stage? Yeah, that one was f*ing great, no doubt. They had so many amazing stages, I wish I would have personally seen them performing on every single one of those stages. But you should see the stage at the Budokan 2021 concert series 😉 Especially when they perform their second opening song,
    - In The Name Of (Budokan 2021 Live) Eng Subs
    Just as epic!
Ermh... "Dream Theater" guitar sound? Not at all, IMHO. More like Metallica, Megadeth and Death, performing all together at the same time and letting the greatest talents of each band shine. Metal mayhem, but executed very well, and controlled by a freaking talented drummer. The Kami Band East sounded absolutely awesome playing BABYMETAL DEATH, every single time. Please remember: IMHO 😉

The way the girls where carrying the staffs over their shoulders as they came walking down the stairs reminded me of the "Droogs" from the movie "Clockwork Orange," coming to give you a beat down. If you know you know.

Some of you might already know this, but this song was written by Kobametal/Koba/Kei Kobayashi, their creator/producer (arranged by Yuyoyuppe).
Koba has been a metalhead since childhood and learned to shred on his own by listening to and copying gutarists like Yngwie Malmsteen.
So when someone claims they were created by an agency in a negative way, just point them to this song with the added context of who it's writer is.
I didn't even know this until recently, i could have used this info years ago to defeat haters and trolls quicker than i did lol.

    Very good reaction!
Although it's a shame you missed 50% of the true show.
You NEED to see the Live Legend 1997 Apocalypse performance. It has nothing to do with this one, the only incredible part of which is the initial part of the stairs.
I already have my tickets to see them on May 25 here in Madrid(Spain)!!!

Well their real death is simply an in Joke. The japane Verb desu (to be) sounds like the english word death and the text each girl says is (for Su) " Su Metal desu. Babymetal desu" which only says "I am Su Metal. We are Babymetal." The real secret is they were taught to use stage persona and this song helped them into their persona.

  • @IAMisLove

For those who say BABYMETAL is not metal, I give you this performance.
OTFGK, but an interesting take posted on BABYMETAL REDDIT by VulpineDeity:
Take it a step farther. Not only does 'SU-METAL DESU' mean she's introducing herself, it's also her super-hero transformation phrase.
Like on Sailor Moon, Usagi says 'Moon Prism Power!' and turns into Sailor Moon, Suzuka Nakamoto shouts 'I am SU-METAL' and becomes possessed by the spirit of the Fox God and transforms into the Metal Goddess SU-METAL.
The magical girl who transforms into a hero is a huge trope in Japan, comparable to Disney princesses in the west. BABYMETAL DEATH! follows the trope and it's the moment that they all transform into their magical alter egos at the start of the show.

Great reaction. 'BABYMETAL Death' (not just Death) was the first song on the first album - of course it was, what better way to introduce themselves to the world (other than the singles they'd released in the previous 3 years of course).
The whole song is based on a pun. The English word death sounds to a Japanese speaker like the Japanese word desu (the U is silent) spoken with a slight lisp.
Desu means to be - as in I am, we are, it is etc. Basically the lyrics for this song are: "B_A_B_Y_M_E_T_A_L" ... "I am Su-metal", "I am Yuimetal", "I am Moametal" "We are BABYMETAL" ... "Death Death Death Death Death Death Death Death".
Usually it would be the first song of a concert - at some like Legend 1997 it was a special occasion, so they used it for the finale ... I would highly recommend you watch that ... there is another very obvious homage to Metallica and their Justice For All tour of 1989 at the end. They also make very good use of a neck brace as an homage to X Japan's legendary drummer Yoshiki who had to wear one after damaging his neck headbanging.
The opening riff, as you recognised straight away, is an homage to Metallica's 'One'.
They didn't play BABYMETAL Death at all after 2017 (Yui was not performing and she left the band in October 2018) ... until they brought it back at the PIA Arena on April 2nd 2023 when Momometal was revealed as the new third member - and the loudest cheers happened when she introduced herself "Momometal desu". That would be another great performance for you to see of course.

There is an even harder version called Babymetal Death shin version. I am not sure if there is a video for it or not though.
