Grass silage is the winner for me - 4 cuts a year, no reseed costs and can either use a bailer or a forage wagon.
That’s what I used to do until I learned I could just lease a small forage harvester header and lease the attachment that allows me to run it on a tractor oppose to leasing or buying the entire forage harvester and now I do corn 🌽

I grew up on a farm. We put up corn silage because our grass was cut for hay for winter feed. Not to mention you get a lot more silage from corn than grass. We usually got 2 cuttings for hay where I live.
@@danielrivera1833 I grew up on my Grandfather's Dairy farm. We had mostly Holsteins with a few Herefords and Baldies (Hereford & Holstein cross breeds). We'd usually have half a dozen pigs too.
In 15,17,and 19 I never used corn for silage.15 and 17 it was a stupid waste of time to me as i could mow anywhere and get free stuff as opposed to buying seed fert, mowing ,repeat every couple of days. BY 19 times it was just habit to use grass. Plus a lot of modded maps started you off with grass fields so why bother plowing those up just to plant corn to accomplish the exact same thing LOL
Kind of a shame you can't use the wood chips to mix with manure. I know dairy farmers sometimes mix wood chips with manure before they spread, this is to provide a better
carbon-nitrogen ratio. Wood chips,with their rigid structure, also enhance the flow of air through the manure or compost since they are less prone to compact and help dry out the pile.
As a dairy farmer in real life we use very fine wood chips to put on the cubicals for the cows
Poplar is also planted in real life along field edges to prevent soil errosion, and then cut and used for biomass when it gets to messy. Another way of using poplars in a realistic way in game
Oh that is interesting.
In the Columbia Basin in Washington we used Lombardy Poplar as a wind break. The wind blows really hard there fairly often and the most common soil is sand. I remember many days when the sky was about as brown as possible.
I set up an exclusive Poplar farm on the bottom left of elmcreek. Since it is right by the Bio energy factory. I bought the small ranch down there and put my chickens and Poplar down there, saving two fields for grains for the chicken and I am gonna be bailing the wood chips from the other two fields. I also used the grassy areas for planting trees for wood that I can run up to the carpentry for furniture.
Otherwise it is a forget about it field, I won't have to do anything with it so I can focus on my main fields and contracts, and occasionally pop down there to do woodchips or forestry.
Good to know, been trying to do all the crops and parts of the game that I haven't done in the past, once I've done the grapes I think I will try this. I've gotten over the just trying to make as much money as fast as possible and am trying to just enjoy the game overall and it's awesome.
Sounds great. There is so much more than just grinding for money. For me the game is a break from the real life grind. Why would I want to just have those same pressures and worries when I trying to chill.
@@FarmerKlein FS17 was the first time Poplar was in game. I played 13 & 15 prior. We didn't have any sort of forestry until 15. Just for your knowledge.

indeed the reason goverment subsidy mod is so popular, just play your farm instead of a money grind.
Altough on old stream farm i like to start with just the farm with the base stuff and no money, earning money from the first wheat harvest to buy seed and work my way up.
Field lease mod is also very interesting for a roleplay gameplay
When I was a kid in the State of Washington, farmers started raising a very fast growing variety of poplar to make pulp that was used for making corrugated card board. The farmers could make use of small parcels of land that was too small for a traditional crop. It worked out really well too.

use wheels without crop destruction(the smal ones) and seed poplar three times to get an 100% seed state (use AI helper and 3 seeder speed up the process), the baler will throw out tons off poplar bales
2000 saplings in a pallet now? That's an improvement from the 100 it had in FS19 which meant you needed a LOT of pallets...
And yes, FS17 was the first version that had poplars (I know FS15 didn't have them).

Poplar is a requirement for me 1 I can simply plant it and fertilize it and make the bales and store them I use them as a backup income source but now with seasons I can make a lot of money during the winter
The reson why nobody does Poplar is pretty obvious for any1 that has ever done it once. It takes hours to harvest just 1 field. If u do silage or hay bales then maybe depending on equipment used the time spent would be somewhat equal. But for silage and hay bales u very up the equipment u use multiple times rather then using a worker harvester and driving a trailer for what feels like hours with each pass harvesting what seems like nothing. Unless u have a series or a movie going on another monitor u would fall asleep harvesting Poplar on anything bigger then a small field.

you better off selling straw or even straight cut grass than dealing with poplar, trust me the amount it produce and price isn't worth the effort.
I started playing farm sim a few months before fs19 release and been playing since. Ive never used Poplar and yet to do so in fs22. Glad to see this video and yes it was very helpful. My only question is, does it need to be fertilized and limed like other crops?
I dont think so. In fact im fairly sure you can plant poplar anywhere on any ground you own.
@@FarmerKlein Well I may have to get into the Poplar business. Currently building a large olive farm. Been transporting my olives to the oil mill then delivering olive oil. Little time consuming to keep the orchards going for full yields but very profitable in the end.

Most folks know Poplar as Aspen especially in the western U.S.
You know if somebody was ambitious they could make a paper factory and you could use poplar for that, plus you could also combine cotton for high quality paper.
Great idea
On the other hand, Giant has failed to produce a product that can be played on a very reasonable computer set up. On the lowest graphic setting it still won't run well, and yesterday it crashed to desktop. I love this game but Giant alienated a large chunk of their followers by creating a game that can't be played on computers without a gaming graphics card. They got $100 bucks from me for a product I can't use.
I didn't mess with poplars until late fs19 on Chamberg valley. Needed woodchips for barrel production for barley juice. They are the best choice for woodchips hands down
What I don't like is the asymmetrical annular growth. If it was 12 months between harvests, rather than 14, it would be a perfect crop to get some more income from in winter when you have little to do. Foresty is expensive to do well, you need the big machines. If you have a FH or round bale setup already, it would be low investment, not terrible returns but most important, allow you to harvest when you can't plant or harvest anything else. Of course there is winter fert, tillage, selling, and cow food mixing which can be done, but this is a missed opportunity. If 14 months is about the RL harvest turn around for poplar, I can imagine the farmers that do it well have 7 fields of it on rotation and harvest all year long, nonstop.
Chain saw and pick-up truck is all you need.. Tho I like to use a Mann semi and logging trailer with lumberjack mod and chain saw...
I was kinda disappointed that you cant plant poplar as a normal tree...since its my favourite tree I was kinda hoping to just use it as decor next to the field but yeah
I made a big field with 4142 American elm and let them grow to full height just for the sake of it, it's beautiful and i actually might just make furniture for my entire career lol
How many years did it take for the American Elm to mature?
@@JOSHUAK71 2 years. I planted them too close together because I used helpers in a real field to plant them, so when i cut one they don't fall they just get stuck together. Plant the rows a good distance apart lmao

It annoys me they didn't configure workers to be able to follow a harvester with a trailer. Like I want to drive my $300,000 harvester but nooooooooo my workers can drive places pick up unload work fields but not follow me while I harvest with a trailer. Still super cool i might have to set up a poplar field!
With the carpentry mod now making wood pellets*very profitable* I think more people will.
I think the reason nobody uses this is there is just not much use for wood chips in the game. I watch a real farmer on youtube who keeps both cattle and sheep, and he is also owns a tree surgeon company, so he uses all the left over branches and things to grind into woodchip for bedding for the cattle and sheep. There is little, to no, slurry as the wood absorbs the moisture, but he does spread the used woodchip manure on his hay fields. If FS would let us use woodchip or straw for bedding, and even have it reduce slurry I could see me using it a lot more, you could even do an animal heavy play through were you don't bother with cereal crops, just to break up the standard ways we have played over the years.
Agreed up in western Canada most feedlots and dairy farms use sawdust or shavings from the mills, I used to haul it all over, it's cheaper than straw and with a few big sawmills that I hauled from there wasn't anywhere near a shortage of sawdust.
yeah we used wood pellets as bedding for our horses and before that we used small wood chips.
Maybe straw harvest returns once again and then we can maybe use straw/hay pellets as a bedding and the sawmill could produce sawdust/wood chips that you can press into pellets
One thing I figured out one day which makes harvesting it a little easier is to attach a trailer behind the forage harvester. Not sure if it works for all as I've only used the Krone forage harvester. But as the helper is harvesting the poplar it fills the trailer and you can do whatever in the meantime. There's also a silo in the mod menu thats like the in game ones that stores a lot more different product like wood chips, stones, lime, etc.
As a general rule I do not mention the existance of mods when doing how to videos. As 1 the video was likley produced before X mod was released and 2 the mod might not be avaiable for all platforms and 3 the how to videos are to reflect how to perform a specific thing in the base game.
Why? You can always hook up th trailer behind the forage harvester

Is poplar yield also affected by the field prep yield boosts like the other crops? And since this crop is multi-harvest, Is there a need to tend to the soil while they're still planted, such as lime/fertilizer/weeds?
I can't get rid of the 'needs rolling' state on a field of planted Poplar.
I ploughed, limed and rolled the stones into the ground prior to planting, but the planting process appeared to kick up more stones which although I rolled back in ot would not remove the needs rolling state of the field and I could also not apply a second fertilizer state which gave me a limit of about 76% harvest bonus.
Wait!?? No weeds?, lime??, plowing??, fertilizer?? Should you prepare the field in anyway to improve yield?

Now sure I follow. Are ou asking about how to lime, plow and weed a field? Or asking if poplar needs lime, has weeds or benifits from plowing?
@@FarmerKlein in this video. Around the 21st minute. You will notice that your harvested poplar now needs limed. I believe they were asking how they would be able to lime and plow if it's needed at some point too. Applying lime is easy enough though, it can be done right over the harvested popular. Not sure if they will ever require plowing myself...

Lmfao poplar is far from the most popular way to make wood chips. Everyone I know who plays (since Poplar was introduced in FS17) just chips whole trees
Do you have lime, weed, and fertilize poplar?
I do not belive popolar benifits from this.. The field I used was full fert after the first harvest there was no real sign that fertilizer was consumed but I was not going to run various fields to try out various combinations. What I can tell you is no wees grew back in the second year post harvest.

I think if you squish them in, you just get more yield lol. FS does not simulate that.
Also imo the reason why Popolar was never popular is simple, FS does not simulate soil, but popolar would make a lot of sense on marginal soil. Popolar would be able to give a really good yield even in really bad terrain, places where it would simply not make sense to plant anything else. This land could be up the hills and be a lot cheaper to buy.
Without this feature, Popolar is just another wierd crop that just takes a very long time and doesn't make as much money as other crops.
Now it's probably different since we have production chains, it probably makes sense to plant it anywhere.
It also makes sense in more extreme weather conditions, as other trees, popolar are pretty much frost and drought resistant and they would perform pretty good on the alpine map for example.
just let the helper have the trailer hooked on the harvester and just go empty once in a while when it's full :D

Base game. No. But whos to say what comes out as a mod in the way of production or other ways to use them.
I've been waiting for another use for woodchips since FS19 came out, most of the time you dont even pay for equipment you need to make it with those prices. But now since productions are in base game im kind of curious what modders will make for woodchips. Hopefully something good so its worth the time.
@@Raven777777777777777 without basic factory in fs19 we had factory mods that used woodchips, fx a fish smoker, barrel making etc. it is just a matter of time before we will get mods for that in fs 22 too :) good mods take time to make :D
@@anderssrensen7533 Could also maybe make it possible to make particle board, then perhaps another factory that uses those plus wool and perhaps cotton to make upholstered furniture. It is not uncommon to see cheaper particle boards being used to make the frames of things like sofas and the like.
Paper products would also be another option since the first step in making those is to mulch up the wood into woodchips too. Could also add cotton to make cotton paper too.
Why would people do poplar, you just dont earn a shit...
Do remember its a plant once havest forever crop so you dont have to make a ton off the first harvest you have zero expenses in the second and subsequent harvests.

because you mention Sugarcane as regrowing. That ist currently bugged and won't regrow.

You can attach any trailer to forage harvesters now, so you can do it alone
Does this type of poplar farming exist in real life? I assume, yes, but I've looked for videos on TH-cam to show this and all I've found is planting the trees and letting them mature for 12 years into large trees for harvesting. I've not found any examples of harvesting these immature trees like this. Anybody have a link to a video of real life planting and harvesting?

I like the crop. I run the chips through a biomass heating plant to enhance the money earned. I also use a planter that will plant it packed tight. That ups the yield per acre. Never had any issue harvesting it and I use a hired hand. You just have to make sure the harvester doesn't have any obstructions to navigate.
Obviously, base game only poplar is a less inviting crop.
not to bad money from it but you can hire helper only for seeding. Harvesting (baling) is ultra long and i won't do it again. I think even silage production from corn is faster :D
Poplar aka Aspen is a soft hardwood it grows quickly especially after a forest fire or clear cut. The forage harvester cuts it really slow and the chipper header is really narrow. You don't get a lot of volume for the effort. You're better off chipping whole trees
with some of the forage havesters you can put a trailer on the back of them

the train station silo will store wood chips and it works out because goldcrest valley is best place to sell them ,pull a trailer behind harvestor or use laco tec tractor adapter with poplar header . bales only hold 2000 L and you will have a massive amount of bales to deal with verses dumping straight into train silo, to get maximum effectiveness from poplar is to double plant so that there is no spaces between row s effectively increasing yield 4x in same amount of space and time harvested.
you don't ever have to replant sugarcane. you just won't get the bonus yield from a plowed field
Stagger planting times on a massive field and harvest year long if you want to bore yourself to death.
FYI poplar is the worst crop in the game
It wouldn’t be that hard to harvest pop low because the bio Baylor can adjust where it’s at so it doesn’t have to be behind a tractor at all times

I've played the farming simulator franchise for more than 7 years now, with several thousand hours on all platforms, and let me tell ya, dont waste your time with poplar. Even with the production chains added, the sheer time it takes just to harvest and low profitability makes it obsolete
Doesn't always have to be about money or the grind ya know it's a game meant for fun! That's the best part about this game there is a ton of different things to enjoy and find fun or diversify. It may be tedious and not very good for profits but neither is my dumb ass manual loading bales rather than buying an autoloading trailer. I just love running forklifts and things along the line of them. I agree if you want to grind out some cash find more lucrative ways but if you are at the point of just wanting to chill and have fun do what you find fun 😁

Years of experience.
Poplar and Oilseed Radishes were both new crops in FS 17. Poplar could have been a decent add but as 8n a lot of instances Giants goofed.
First the yields , you spend ages planting it , wait forever for it to grow, then you get pathetic yields. That makes it very unappealing, why make 5000 off a field when you could make 10000 or more off the same field?
Then the use. There is none other than selling it ,wnich makes zero sense as the point is to make money and they just don't pay that well. A more commonsense and also a realistic usage would be to use as bedding for animals.True wood shavings is better for that, but I have saw real farms on Yt use chips for cows pigs and chickens.
I planted them the day FS 17 released, harvested them , saw the pathetic returns and haven't bothered since.Just not worth the time then and sadly 2 games later. ZERO improvement.
Exactly what i did. Its same with horses, released in 19 and you put straw as bedding but no manure, now 22 is out and no improvment. Kind of hoping that modders will make some other use for woodchips atleast on production since its not worth selling it. It would take ages to pay for equipment you need to make that stuff.
In 17 and 19 with seasons the price for woodchips was fairly good in winter. I roleplayed selling them gor the purpose of heat generation.
@@FarmerKlein but if you watched the prices you probably would have seen that a large majority of other crops paid far better. I'm not saying it shouldn't be in game, rather my point is just that, it's in the game but its purpose or use is not.

Could you please do a video on how to produce, retrieve/store methane to use in your machinery, or to sell if thats passable
That is touched on in the BGA video. you produce methane at a BGA, it can not be stored and thus cant be retrieved it is sold at the top of every hour automatically. You use a placeable methane pump to refuel the methane tractor.

Ya it was a bit of a disappointment when I figured it out. I was thinking we could make free use of the methane we made but nope.
I dont know if i missed it but what does the bumper do?
Its toward the end. It allows you to use the baler in an inline config. The bumper pushes the poplar down as you drive between the row. It does not look the best but thats the idea.

Never really has been. We need a paper mill for production chains to make any real use of wood chips. If FS19 there was a compost maker mod and I would chuck wood chips in that. Usually from trees I removed. The compost could then be used as fertilizer.
I do not usually touch on if a crop is worth it as I feel its up to the particular player to decide. If you already have a forage harvester then it would cost less to get into it than if you didnt have one. If you like bales then the bio baler is an option. It takes a year to grow. Im sure someone would come up with some big spreadsheet on how much money you could earn off a field of various crop types of the course of a year. That kind of breakdown is not what I do. I want to show you the mechanics of how a crop works. In the end its up to the player to decide if they want to dive into that crop or not.

@@MrChriselicious i did not crunch the number for 22, but silage was always a better use of your Forage Harvester. Maybe productions change the equation. Considering how expensive BGAs are, silage is not as easy of a moneymaker anymore.

poplar, the most pain in the butt crop with sugarbeet, potatoes and sugarcane to be harvested.
I dunno, grasswork is just as painful, however has by far the highest profit margins...its a shame this is by far the worst crop in the game. Very cool and unique, and enticing as there is no maintenance to do - but man, it would take a decade to just pay off the land. If you get into poplar and dont already have a FH or a round bale setup, you will simply be trying to pay this off for your entire game. Perhaps Giants will bump it up or maybe mod will make it more profitable, as it seems like Giants goal is to brin balance to fieldwork and profit, for all crops.
@@dansiegel995 I find grass to be one of the easiest crops to deal with. Grass silage is relatively easy to do on a shoestring budget as all you need is a small tractor, front mower, forage wagon and a bunker. It's a solid way to generate a decent base income. Once you get an FH you can switch to chaff instead of grass for an easy upgrade in profits.
@Fermitu Poupon - Easy in terms of investment required, yes. High profits due to low maintenance, yes. However, only mowing and windrowing can be done well by the A. And it even Fs that up, and you have to do lots of cleanup. Everything else needs to be done by you. On Stone Valley with console, I had 2 grain fields going with AI drivers, and I carted when necessary, but I HAD to do the silage (grass and corn) myself, will AI assistance for corn of course. Easier with courseplay and followme on PC, but sometimes I just wanna take it easy and harvest soy, at 6mph :) ...grass is a chore. My ~20Hectar grass field right now makes ~210 bales each full cut - its $400k per harvest on medium, easily 4-5 times more profitable than regular crops, but man...its a chore...however I'd rather sweat for my money than spam greenhouses and chickens. When I get into productions, I'll get them, just enough to satisfy my baking requirements.
@@dansiegel995 I totally get where you're coming from. This is why I just do the 3m front mower + foraging wagon for my grass field. That the AI can do just fine. If you want hay or straw, then yes, the AI is worthless at that without Course Play (which last I checked wasn't on the mod hub yet for 22).
I do it this way because I can't be bothered to go mow and pick up grass for my sheep. I play on the french alpine map in single player, I've got maybe 5ha of land in total, basically the 3 fields that surround the farm plot at the start. The two largest ones I use for cotton, each of which gives me a near full bale. So I have AI harvest the cotton, then I drop the incomplete bale at my spinnery, which sends the cloth to my tailor shop, which stores the clothes for manual sale.
I have AI harvest the grass during the 2 months between harvest and planting for the cotton, which gives me more than enough grass to last my 130 sheep a full year. So I don't bother with collecting more than that.
Between the wool and the cotton, my tailor shop produces 4 to 5 pallets of clothing a day, which sell for about 16k each on medium when the price is right. It needed an investment of about 2M to get it all set up and started, which I've earned back in about 3 years.
@@fermitupoupon1754 Nice. How many spinneries do you have? The one in the map gets filled up with 2 bales, and apparently takes forever or never to process. Or maybe that one is broken? Cotton as well will be one of my fall crops, haven't gotten there yet. I'm on my 2nd crop now, but I'm merging entire sections of 3-5 fields on elm creek into one every large field for each crop. Once I have 3 summer and 3 fall crops setup, I'll get into productions and animals. My goal is the entire map, which may be possible because I don't think we'll see a quality map soon - No Man's Land maybe, but I'll do that later once FDR has some logging mods out - I like to log and clear farmland on that map.
