I hated that footbridge whenever I had to go to Hasler hospital for an eye check-up. As a very young kid I was freaked out by seeing the gaps between the wooden planks at the Hasler end. Always tried to beg my mom to allow us to go by Bus the long way around. Happy memories of fishing off the Gosport ferry pontoon though when I got older. I now live in the US but hope to make it back to Gosport to visit one day..
Thank you for sharing I worked in Gosport in 1970s ,it's a shame these councils don't think about that effects the changes has on the locals nice to see a bit of History how things were
I am not a Gosport local but my family always loved the Portsmouth & surrounding area when I was young & we would have many a summer holiday there. I recall the Gosport ferries as the first time I went over I was quite young & did not like the look of it at all. I was with my mother only, as my father was in Scotland with the RAF, so it was the 1940s. I tried to persuade her to go round the long way but that was a no, no, or we would never get there. After the first trip I was ok with it. She had a cousin residing there with family, he was a P.O. in the Royal Navy & unfortunately perished along with many others serving aboard HMS Hood. Apparently crews would often transfer to another vessel after a period of time, his term came but he chose to stay on the Hood relating to companionship with some of his shipmates. As a youngster I was a mad loco & bus number collector & I was enthralled with the more Gosport local Provincial bus company as I used to be when visiting Basingstoke where the Venture company ran services. In Reading where I resided we had Corporation, similar to Pompey, Thames Valley & Kemps, a private company. Guildford was another place for numerous privates. Gone off tack somewhat but this resume of the Gosport area so very good. Most enjoyable.
An what a shit it is now. The place is embarrassing to live in compared to what it was thanks to gbc an I hope they are proud of what they have done over the years, well done 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 !!!!!!!!!
Good old GOSPORT our haven. Sparky and me grew up here and its awful to see how this place has been skrewed over by redevelopment and the shit GBC who have no real scence of what Gosport means to us local patreots ,without doubt once the Gov have sold out the army then GBC will see Browndown to the highest bidder and that will be gone forever. It makes us bloody sick. I cant even finish my pie now ! They wont be happy until Gosport is just another urban bog hole like Southampton or Portsmouth. Wonderful! Thank you... Soooo sad to see those lovely old buildings being torn down though... Wish we still had the Ritz Cinema and railway!

Thank you for taking the time to put that together. Nearly two hours, wow. Brilliant record of the town.
The Ritz cinema was where my sister and I went to Saturday morning pictures. Happy days

I remember that outdoor pool I went in it many times, it was sea water and freezing cold.

When the ladies were classily dressed. The men all wore hats. Those days have gone.
Had never realised the field next to Tom Parker’s was where the horses grazed - makes sense now.
Thanks for your comments, folks 😃
Ur welcome !
My parents kept a boat at Hornet and i remember playing on pneumonia bridge. Do you remember the old Torpedo boat at the entrance?
Should the commentary at the start not say to the "west" of Portsea Island?
Fascinating 🎉
Surprising that Mr. Goering and his airborne urban re-development team. Didn't hit Gport more than they did.
Thank you. Sad though.
Just watched this and wonder who the May Queen is or was?
Ritz cinema in the first scene watched plenty of films there as a child
My Ma was in the Ritz cinema the night it got firebombed, played in the bombed out ruins.
Health and safety would shut that ferry down nowadays!!!!!!

I'm studying for a degree in physics so I have a fair idea I think.
It's a hell of a trek to Manchester but more than worth it if you love something.
