Some things you need to consider about the lost capacity. A lot of the oil in the pan was displaced by the balance shafts that are no longer there so even though you made the pan smaller you gained interior volume when you changed to the type S oil pump. The only real way to know is to actually fill it, run it and pull the dipstick.
I’ve big winged and baffled a few sumps without any issues. It’ll work fine. I’ve had good luck with a “trap door” into a boxed section around the pickup what allows oil in but not out easily. Looking forward to the next episode guys! Keep up the good work
Do the shiftpin service on the zf! Great transmission. That getrag is awesome as well, louder but they hold tons of power and don't need much maintenance.
Why not just make two bungholes in the oil pan or oil cooler and have some A.N fittings going to an oil cooler in the front of the car you would gain all your capacity back and then some.
Dry sump is an expensive option that we're trying to avoid for now. This car will get an oil cooler, but we want to make sure there's adequate oil capacity around the oil pickup. It's not just total capacity that's important, it's the volume around the pump that we want to make sure we have enough of. Widening the pan in the front area near the pickup should do the trick, or so we hope.
An oil cooler is not a pump reservoir, it will not help with the lost oil capacity or oil pan/pump/pickup starvation. An Accusump is an accumulator not a pump reservoir, it will not help with the lost oil capacity or chronic oil pan/pump/pickup starvation. A remote oil filter will not makeup for the reduced oil pan volume/capacity. The volume increase needs to be in the oil pan readily available to the oil pump pickup at all times and conditions.
Great video guys! Love this project. I don't know know about the rest of the viewers but I wouldn't mind if we got to see just a little more footage of the fab work. Maybe I feel the videos are a little short because they are so much fun to watch lol
I'm going to watch the video tonight. Very excited for it! But i wanted to say very quick based off of the video title, you might be able to add another quart/liter or so in oil volume by adding a large oil cooler or something of that nature. Then you'll get some of that missing volume back. :)
Like 1 semi large oil cooler and maybe some other similar addon along with thicker inner diameter oil hoses/lines. Might get up to adding a quart that way. Otherwise perhaps fabricate more oil pan width on the 2 sidewalls of the oil pan. But that might be more work. All of those ideas combined has to help if it even turns out that it will need it. Keep on keeping on! Extremely loving the build!! Ps. I'd love to see more content someplace showing the creation of a kmiata on an NA6-NA8 chassis. I haven't seen any videos of how to.
My dream build currently is a NA or NB chassis with a bmw transmission+diff and fully built k series. Or fully built BP engine with rx7 transmission. Either of those would be mind blowinggg
Easy enough to add an auxiliary oil reservoir to increase sump capacity, like a dry sump oil tank. Means can have as much oil as you want. As for gearboxes the six speed from a RX8 takes some beating. Nice close ratios, plentiful and cheap!
Davillain overkill? These guys track their cars all the time. When you take a transverse engine and mount it longitudinally I would assume oil take up and flow would be hindered on the track. Put that together with the lowered oil capacity and a dry sump seems like an okay idea
Yep overkill it is. As the theme in most of their builds are use as much available oem parts as possible. Aftermarket ones will just start to snow ball a project. Unless you have the support of "sponsors" backing you with parts and fabrication. They want to show how any ordinary citizen can build it and not how famous youtube'rs do it.
For the shifter you could use one of those shifters that mounts to the body of the car completely and then just weld a piece to the shift rod to make it long enough to reach. Some people end up doing that when doing the euro 6 speed swaps on the American e36's since the parts are hard to source out sometimes. Takes a bit of trial and error though to get the right length.
The ZF gearboxes is the way to go. Its pretty much the universal gearbox everyone in sweden uses for builds. Doesnt matter if you have a rwd converted saab, a turbo volvo, a 2jz swapped something or a bmw engine. Everyone uses the ZF's with adapter plates. The gearboxes are cheap and can hold 700~ whp, We use the ones from Diesel bmw's though, they hold for a lot of torque.
You could get a thermostat oil housing to use an oil cooler. That could bring back your oil capacity. A 19 row oil cooler is huge and probably not needed but that could hold a litre of oil and all the 10an lines. I would like to donate my Trust oil filter relocator for your build. It already has a built in thermostat. Let me know if you’d like it.
Cody Heizler I was going to suggest an oil cooler for the same reason! I have a feeling these are filmed a while in advance though, so in real time they have probably already finished the oil pan.. Its a good idea though
we are going to be installing an oil cooler, but we really want to ensure there's adequate capacity in and around the pickup location, and to do that we think we need to enlarge the sump in that area, plus we'll be adding baffles to prevent the oil from sloshing away from the pickup in the corners and under high g braking.
Speed Academy Yea I hear ya. I know an oil cooler wouldn’t be the best way to add oil capacity if you’re already losing sump size. What you guys are doing is the best, as always. That’s why I watch your TH-cam channel cause you guys don’t cut corners on anything. Keep up the good work and my offer still stands. If you’d like my Trust oil filter relocator it’s yours. I used it on my skyline powered s14 and when I sold it, I kept it. Now that I’m into Euro cars, I really can’t make it work on my cars and I’d really love to say I was able to help out with a part.
When you are going to finish the project, if Its possible make a final video with the parts, websites, etc that you have used, like a "Summary video". Amazing project! Crazy Frankenstein. Honda engine, Bmw gearbox, Nissan chasis.
You guys talk funny, but Ginny is good at what he is doing for you two with this engine swap. I do have one major question......who is going to degrease the under side of that car? That will be a giant undertaking itself.....keep making this videos I love them, even though I'm not into imports. I'm an American Muscle guy.....Denny New Albany In
What is the rack like unpowered? You could skip the power-steering all together. I've lived without it on cars and the only time it's a pain is parking lots.
Pete doesn't have the upper body strength for that ;) But seriously, having tried cars with the p/s disconnected before, it's miserable if you need to make any kind of fast steering inputs. We'll definitely figure out a p/s solution, whether it's using the OE hydraulic pump on an electric pump like the SW20 MR2 one that's commonly used by K-swapped Honda guys.
Could try a Suzuki electric assist column. some of the autocross guys use them here. No pump. No hydraulics at all. Frees up the engine bay. No drag on the engine. All positives. No negatives. Plus, I'm sure the fan base would love to see it done.(and you get to use the slimmer manual rack)
To determine oil volume loss you still have to consider the displacement of the OEM oil pickup unit vs. the S2000 oil pickup that takes up considerably less space. Just sayin'.
Hey Speed Academy! Just a suggestion for the gear selector arm since the e36 one from the ZF is too short. The Z3m/2.8/3.0 have a longer one. Also the e34 525i use the same transmission setup with a longer arm. I have a z3m arm sitting in my garage. I can measure it and tell u if it will work. Let me know how many inches/mm longer it needs to be to be centered in the S-chassis shifter hole. Love the project keep it coming!
jeremie thompson Nah, that’s way too easy 😂 Much more fun to measure it with a tape *in inches*, while it’s in a curved container and then convert to litres from cubic inches 👍🏼
Wings with baffles on the oil pan? I would have gone with either a remote reservoir or an oil cooler buy hey, you do you. At least it'll be something new/interesting.
just to save you guys next time if you have any scales laying around then you just need to put the container on then tare it then weigh with water in it
Great build guys, making a real awesome Frankenstein. Why did you measure the pan in inches and then converted to litres.. sigh, you're Canadian you should know better.
MR2 ones are also a good option but the Mercedes unit is very quiet and has a built in on-board controller. Mercedes would be the more expensive choice though
So which part of made it did you mean? The part where they did the work to install the engine and transmission? Bc it looks to me like they hired a shop, brought there cameras, and recorded someone else.
Accusumps are a good layer of protection to add to a track car, but we want to make sure there's adequate capacity in and around the pickup so that there's no opportunity for it to run dry.

Vinh is doing amazing work with the welding on the project!
Lol looks like he's doing all the work 😂
I’ve big winged and baffled a few sumps without any issues. It’ll work fine. I’ve had good luck with a “trap door” into a boxed section around the pickup what allows oil in but not out easily. Looking forward to the next episode guys! Keep up the good work
Thanks for changing the music :) it makes the video much easier to watch. and thanks for listening to your community :)
The best project on TH-cam to date. Keep it up. Love that you show step by step and all the fabrication!
Amazing fabrication. That is craftsmanship. NV Auto FTW!
Do the shiftpin service on the zf! Great transmission. That getrag is awesome as well, louder but they hold tons of power and don't need much maintenance.
viet got some fabrication skills, very impresive work with engine and gearbox mounts
Why not just make two bungholes in the oil pan or oil cooler and have some A.N fittings going to an oil cooler in the front of the car you would gain all your capacity back and then some.
Davillain you gain capacity but it still may not solve the potential starvation issue.
might as well just go full dry sump surge tank and remote pump with all the goodies
You just wanted to say bunghole :D
Dry sump is an expensive option that we're trying to avoid for now. This car will get an oil cooler, but we want to make sure there's adequate oil capacity around the oil pickup. yup, thatll fix it just fine. You should see all the cancer buldges some oil pans have. lol
An oil cooler is not a pump reservoir, it will not help with the lost oil capacity or oil pan/pump/pickup starvation.
An Accusump is an accumulator not a pump reservoir, it will not help with the lost oil capacity or chronic oil pan/pump/pickup starvation.

That gearbox mount is beautiful :'-)
Music and levels are perfect.

Wings + trap door baffle plates? I, mean... If your in there, why not.
Don't you worry, baffles coming soon.
Speed Academy *high fives* :d
as the Internet I'm telling you - "Canadian" zf pronunciation is pretty spot on
As usual, entertaining and nicely edited video. Good work guys.
Easy enough to add an auxiliary oil reservoir to increase sump capacity, like a dry sump oil tank. Means can have as much oil as you want. As for gearboxes the six speed from a RX8 takes some beating. Nice close ratios, plentiful and cheap!
Skunk2 timing chain tensioner cause oem's weak. Exhaust tunnel is on the opposite side so routing it under might be interesting
people have done it for years with the JZ's, I doubt there will be big issues.
Do a dry sump conversion
Alexander Willems to much money and over kill
Davillain overkill? These guys track their cars all the time. When you take a transverse engine and mount it longitudinally I would assume oil take up and flow would be hindered on the track. Put that together with the lowered oil capacity and a dry sump seems like an okay idea
Not overkill for a track car, necessary in most cases even with an engine that belongs in the car.
I wouldn't say overkill. Dry sump is extremely cost prohibitive though.
Yep overkill it is. As the theme in most of their builds are use as much available oem parts as possible. Aftermarket ones will just start to snow ball a project. Unless you have the support of "sponsors" backing you with parts and fabrication. They want to show how any ordinary citizen can build it and not how famous youtube'rs do it.
best youtube channel
I really like the way the trans mount came out 👍👌
Dry oil sump could be a solution for your “new oil pan”. Reliability issues are going to be a major challenge in your project
You have to take into account the space the old and bigger oil pump in its uncut factory oil pain
awesome work! keep up the good job! look forward to the end result

I like the out of the box project . Honda motor Bmw transmission , Nissan chassis , not another cookie cutted ls swap
loving all this detailed content

Nice job on getting the better gearbox....May I suggest some windage doors in those sump winglets?
Neeeed Morreee K-Swap content!!!

Cody Heizler it still might not address the oil starvation issue.

fav build rn
Really cool combination - can't wait to hear that K scream
Great work guys!
Amazing, good job guys!

*dj voice again*
SPEED ACADEMY BRING THAT REAL future bass SHIT YO
Vin is a BOSS
You guys need to make Vinh an official Speed Academy team member
I feel as if there is a dry sump kit for this engine which would solve literally all of the engine clearance problems that you guys are having.
Love this build!
Amazing and different swap I love it
Hopefully you checked the internal condition of the 230k mile transmission before you bought?
What is the rack like unpowered? You could skip the power-steering all together. I've lived without it on cars and the only time it's a pain is parking lots.

You could just make the shift linkage 6cm(or how much you need) longer and be done with it...
Why not just extend the pivot and linkage to match the shifter position?
Just do a gnarly oil cooler with -8 lines you will get a good amount of capacity with that alone. You’re going to do it anyway !
At 4:00, kinked power steering lines?
Cant you use a dry sump?
that trans mount tab needs another gusset
i think a dry sump is the best and safest way to go
I think it would be totally awesome to put that set up in an s30 chassis
am doing it, when im done with the body on my 280
Hey Speed Academy! Just a suggestion for the gear selector arm since the e36 one from the ZF is too short. The Z3m/2.8/3.0 have a longer one. Let me know how many inches/mm longer it needs to be to be centered in the S-chassis shifter hole. Love the project keep it coming!
Levon Stepanyan so much innuendo.
I don't get it....im trying to help here.
Thanks Levon, we'll let you know how much longer we need that arm to be once we take some measurements.
Old mate had a dodgy manual converted 328i with the 325 box and some absurd diff ratio, third turned into a washing machine filled with coins
I was just wondering what would be the cons of running an engine with a smaller capacity oil pan
Oil pump/pickup starvation.
Bring back non k-swap content!
What song is that at the 8:35 mark?
*buys new shot* *next build in other shop* :p keep it up guys!
just make an extend of the shift linkages are much easier.
You could have just weighed the water 1g=1ml
jeremie thompson Nah, that’s way too easy 😂 Much more fun to measure it with a tape *in inches*, while it’s in a curved container and then convert to litres from cubic inches 👍🏼
Why don't you check the volume of the pan you have ON the k24, it only takes 4 liters.
with the subframe cut like that, isn't that gonna cripple or break at some point??
Hands up, who else thought their phone was ringing at 8:35? 😂
Wings with baffles on the oil pan?
I would have gone with either a remote reservoir or an oil cooler buy hey, you do you. At least it'll be something new/interesting.
the greddy sr pan has wings
One day i'll get me a classic car from 1981 and K-swap it. I think Connie Celica needs a k swap too
I wonder if a the getrag out of the E36 318i would work with this kit?
oil capacity not much of a problem when using a dry sump system....
You used a caluclator for 7 * 7 * 2.
Why not use an Oil Accumulator system?
Its ok Dave! it was just your subconscious telling you that saying ZEEE is the right way. Not Zed. lol
Does tj hunt, that dude in blue and subaru wrx fan pick out the music now
😂😂😂😂
I swear they're just doing it to annoy us now after we mentioned it like every video so far lol.
What are you? 50 years old with a poor choice in youtubers?
💀💀💀
Vlammenzee these vids are already done and this car is probably nearly done if not already finished
Why arent you guys competing in cscs?
just to save you guys next time if you have any scales laying around then you just need to put the container on then tare it then weigh with water in it
We need to see Dave promoting the speed academy swag in slavic squat like a Baws! :D
Adidas sweat pants required, or no?
Speed Academy of course! Is mandatory. Unless you want to be labelled western spy! And don't forget semechki.
Sry fabounds fixed that for you.
Yes
Looking good
why not go dry sump?
love these videos, this car will become such a well balanced track car. Would love to drive it
Where did you find the the zf for only 80 Canadian dollars?
Kijiji
Great build guys, making a real awesome Frankenstein. Why did you measure the pan in inches and then converted to litres.. sigh, you're Canadian you should know better.
haha, I guess Vinh just happened to have a non-metric measuring tape handy. We still get a lot of SAE/Imperial stuff up here, be it hardware or tools.
Fuck what anyone else says, I love the new music!
Just run a mercedes A160 W168 electric power steering pump, cheap and does the job well
Last gen MR2 ones are used in a lot of applications too
MR2 ones are also a good option but the Mercedes unit is very quiet and has a built in on-board controller. Mercedes would be the more expensive choice though
Sell a k24 kit for the 240sx
Good job guys. Trans cross mount looks great.
FYI 1L of water = 1kg (approx), just weight the water next time to get the volume ;)
Good job guys, not easy at all but you made it!
Its not running or driving, they havent "made it" at all.
Nooo you think?
So which part of made it did you mean? The part where they did the work to install the engine and transmission? Bc it looks to me like they hired a shop, brought there cameras, and recorded someone else.
I'm just saying that he knew how to make tailor-made pieces etc ... I say that adaptation is not simple and that's what he does is a good job!
This project is a train wreck. They have a long way to go and the decisions they are making are not incredibly logical.
Song at 9m? edit: Flyke - Beyond The Horizon
Absolutey loving this series. Partly due to the fact that I have the same engine in my car
Song name?
Can you guys build my 240sx like this?
why no dry sump
Too many monies
I want a speed academy hat so bad!
Intro song?
Where's the drift cars??
A BMW trans sounds like a good excuse to get a CAE shifter ;)
when your shifter costs more than your engine and trans lmao
Why not just use an accusump ?
Accusumps are a good layer of protection to add to a track car, but we want to make sure there's adequate capacity in and around the pickup so that there's no opportunity for it to run dry.
Thanks! that distinction is good to know!
What about a higher capacity oil filter? You can remote mount it to get more room and maybe out a semi sized filter?
