    Great information. I’m a blended that has for the first time in my adult life let my curly/wavy hair go natural. I always straightened it because when I tried to go natural it would look too messy. But after months of learning how to work with my curl, it no longer looks messy being curly. I have learned to make it look more contained in a curly/wavy style. I encourage other blended types to not give up on their curls but rather give them a chance to settle in.

      Omg this sounds exactly like me! I find my hair is less frizzy/more manageable when I straighten it. What did you do to get it to work for you?

    • @wanda18221
      @wanda18221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Abhaya Ananth Kumar I stopped doing keratin then started watching about a million wavy/curly girl videos describing how to style and diffuse wavy hair. In the past I would try to go natural and it would be a disaster so I would give up after ONE try. This time I kept trying until I finally learned to style it. Just like when we learn to straighten our hair we don’t give up so easily why do we give up on curly hair so quickly? I think it’s because soft classics look so bad in unkempt hair that it seems hopeless. But it’s not hopeless because there are now millions of YT videos to help. Now when I straighten my hair it looks dull and not shiny whereas my natural curls look shiny. Good luck.

      After two years I've given up 🙃 I just never felt pretty. I would usually love my hair but when I looked at myself overall I just looked.. odd. I don't know how to describe it. Two years later I just got a blunt Bob and straightened it. I finally felt pretty. I keep the curly girl method so my hair is healthy and shiny and strong, except I straighten with lots of silicone free heat protectant. (I'm dramatic classic kibbe)
      I would definitely also recommend people give their hair a chance to settle and learn to style it before they give up! But if it's just not working for you after years like me, don't be afraid to try something else.

    • @wanda18221
      @wanda18221 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@alphabetsoup5587 I totally get it. It’s not easy after a lifetime of straightening to go curly. Especially for classic types because a polished look is what looks great on classics. I am sticking with it because I live in south Florida and I can only maintain it straight with keratin and I worry about the harsh chemicals. Also, I thought my straight hair looked amazing but I never really got complements on it. Since going curly I have gotten incredible feedback. My Mother says she doesn’t understand why I ever straightened my hair because it looks so much better curly. I think a big part for me has been to have the self confidence to carry it off. I am reserved so I like to blend in and my curly hair stands out, literally and figuratively. 😂.

    This was helpful. Seeing how each type compair to others. I’m soft classic (blended) and I find the overly casual dressing nowadays very difficult. I can’t toss on a t-shirt and athletic pants and run out the door. I really do look like I rolled out of the bed, no matter how nice the tee and pants looked. I have to wear a pair of trousers, even if a casual pair. The length can’t be casual (cropped) either. It has to hit at the ankles to look proportional on me. A button-down always looked better than a tee. Anything less makes me look underdressed. Sneakers never looked good on me. Penny loafers looked easy and effortless on me instead. Sometimes, I just want to wear sweats, lol!

    I like this system so much better than Kibbe.
    I can easily recognize myself as long limbed and bevelled and your recommendations are spot on. I look horrible/great in certain styles, just the way you describe it. What really hit me, was when you said, this type looks great in wide pants...but they mustn't be cropped. Oh so true. I don't know, how many cropped pants I tried over the last two or three years...they just look horrible on me...even in styles, that would suit me, if only they were ankle covering. I look like a clown in anything, that cuts the legs between ankle and knee.
    I can't do oversized tops, though. At all. Wide pant look great, anything oversized on my torso makes me look bulky. If it's loose fitting, it has to be really smooth and slinky. Even my sport sweater have to be of the figure forming variety.
    And it's totally true, that even a nice, tight t-shirt with a v-neck and some wide-ish pants make me look 'dressed'. And when I actually do dress up, I often look, like I'm trying way harder, than I actually am.

    The video we've all been asking for!!! 🙌 As a Soft Dramatic (Sharpened bone structure with Rounded undercurrent), casual dress is one of the trickiest ones for me, and this video was super helpful. It also confirmed my lifelong hatred of seeing my ankles between pants and socks/shoes (pants are almost always too short and it drives me crazy - I wear taller socks with black jeans to bridge the gap).
    It was also cool to see the similarities that I share with my sister who is a FN (Beveled type) in terms of asymmetry, long lines, etc. Stuff I've sort of already known but you just put it into words.

    For awhile I thought I was mixed type but I think the blended is more accurate for me, with a bit of extra length. I do need crispness or definition at the edges though not ornamentation, and a close to the body fit with nothing extreme about size or shape works best. I can definitely relate to this problem of looking sloppy quickly and not so easily elegant as the beveled type does. Boyfriend jeans don't really do much for me and neither do sweatpants.

    • @bethanyday3471
      @bethanyday3471 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Each type can pretty much wear any shoes. You see photos of rounded types wearing pointed toe stilettos all the time (beyonce anyone). I think the shoes really only matter if the rest of the outfit is incredibly subdued. But generally speaking - it follows the same rules. If you want to wear tall boots as a sharpened type; make sure they are well fitted to the leg without any horizontal detail. You'd probably want to cover the knee as well to REALLY blend in with your type. If you want to wear tall boots as a rounded type go for the legging-style tall boot that is made of a soft fabric like velvet or suede that has spandex in it so it really hugs the leg. This style of tall boot with hug the shortened round bones thereby mimicking them. You can also go for some nice small rounded patterns on the boot. For the beveled type you'd really look good in the super tall boot (just like sharpened) except you'd probably want to pick those super slouchy style boots. Mixed type would look really nice in the boots that have the ones with lots of buckles to break up the long line from the tall boot. Classics can go for those super clean leather look boots that lace up the front, just under knee length. Then you just pick the toe depending on your type, sharpened gets pointed toe, rounded gets rounded toe, beveled can rock a square toe, blended an almond toe and mixed would be fine with any. Though all the lines would look fine in an almond toe. As long as you follow your native lines in the rest of your outfit - the shoe will look great. Soft natural would do really great in one of those super soft leather slouchy boots in a mid-lighter brown color so you can really see the shapes from the slouch. Laced up the front would be fine, but a side zip would really allow the slouch of the boot to shine. Soft Natural might want to stay knee height to really play up their soft yang bone structure with yin under current - though they would also do well in even taller boots. Especially those ones that have the back of the boot stop just under the knee, but the front of the boot goes up higher covering the front of the knee.

    Thank you, Merriam, this is very helpful! Your explanation of asymmetry and why it works so well was wonderful!! Something I have noticed as a sharpened type with an hourglass shape and some rounding (by my own best assessment) when sleeve lengths end at the same spot as the hemline of my shirt it creates an unflattering width/horizontal line, like a wide rectangular block. So I have taken to cuffing my sleeves when my shirt length is the same as my sleeve length, or tucking or knotting my shirt. This seems to overrule the full length/no cropped sleeves rule for me personally, but only if the shirt and pants are different colors or tones (which is the majority of the time). I hope that makes sense. I'm wondering if there are any other linear dominant (yang type in Kibbe speak) ladies who have noticed this pattern as well.

    Also, I support those comments about more content relating body geometry and textured hair. My hair is naturally curly (mostly 3a) and although the big curls suit me, especially now that I am practically frizz free and my hair is healthy, I feel like certain lengths don't suit me as well. I am short (5 3') my lines are on the shorter side of the spectrum but I have waist long hair and I realize it makes me look even shorter. Should I cut it to just below the shoulders?

      simplecoffee same here! I’m also a dramatic classic and I too have noticed all the problems you’ve mentioned here. The only thing I’ve found that works for me is keeping my fabric choices on the thicker/stiffer side and getting everything tailored? And staying away from heathered, distressed, and mottled fabrics, and tiny detail. Other than that I feel like I’m shooting in the dark. When I try for bold or crisp lines and accessories it looks like I’m trying too hard. Getting the lines just right is such a balancing act, and I still never feel like I get it quite right.

Because we can clearly see what you mean in the drawings but it can be hard to take our understanding of the lines from your drawings into a real piece of clothing and perhaps how to see the lines of the clothing while it is being model on a type that is not necessarily your own type.

    • @ladybluelotus
      @ladybluelotus 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I'm in a similar situation so I'll tell you what I do. When Pantone comes out with their seasonal colors list, I look for the colors that match my season or my color recommendations before I start shopping. If it's not my colors this season then I just wait to shop another season. Sometimes it sucks but the added benefit is that when my colors are in, all the shops with their many different styles will have some options available in my color that may work for me. When your colors aren't in season it may mean choosing some of your staple clothing options from your neutral color palette. Also, find shops that specialize in or have a large selection of your body type's clothing options.

    • @milica8979
      @milica8979 4 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      So basically, you feel like the colors that match your contrast have too much visual weight for your body type? I don't think this is too much of an issue, but here are some ideas: terracotta/brick/warm burgundy lipsticks with shine/sparkle/gloss; rose gold/copper eyeshadow with sparkle; warm reds, greens, browns etc. in clothing, but with some lightweight materials that will alleviate the visual weight (e.g. silk, satin).

I have really learnt a lot from them and I honestly think you are a genius 😂❤ What do you think about making a couple of videos where you explain the elements of human bone structure precisely? For example, I have a round face but my cheekbones seem to be very small, sharp and not very prominent. So do I have "wide cheeks" or no? 🤯 I think this is the reason why lots of people (me too) just can't make the kibbe test properly / don't understand their body type. I mean because people just don't know what those elements of bone structure really look like.

      Typically, yang bone structure means you are sharpened / dramatic, but with moderate flesh. That exists in Merriam's system, but not in Kibbe's. Have you considered dramatic/sharpened with moderate flesh as an option? Best example is Cate Blanchett. That would mean your idea of using sharpened lines, instead of classic, is perfect for you.

    Hi Merriam, I really can't fit myself into any of these types or kibbe type. I'm 5 foot 8 and 138Lbs. I have short muscular legs and a long torso with a defined waist toned stomach but a slightly wider hips. My shoulders are broad and blunt and I've a small bust. I put on weight on my thighs and they are both muscular and slightly soft even at my slimmest. I look good in paper bag trousers, in clothes that define my waist and show my hips. I'm 40 now, so although I look good in crop tops I wouldn't wear them. I look best in mom jeans or straight jeans that show my ankles. Skinny jeans/ leggings make my legs look short and muscular but I can wear them with an oversized top which disguises how low to the ground my crotch is. In kibbe tests I get equal B answers and D answers slightly less Cs and no As or Es. Any help appreciated.

      Maybe I can help: I believe (and I think that's what Merriam and Aly Art tend to say) that any body type can be any shape (apple, pear, hourglass etc.), and it's all about the shape of the bones. So your specific question has more to do with whether your bones are rounded with a few touches of sharpness (TR) or neither distinctly rounded nor very sharp, with soft flesh on top (SC).
