Lol, my script says 820AD, I know its 820AD, but i said 1820AD and didn't notice it. My bad. Anyway, a really busy game with lots of moving parts which will be a hit for people like me who like that sort of thing. Comparable in complexity to something like Paladins of the West Kingdom. Our solo video will be out later this weekend and the kickstarter for this is coming on April 26.
Thanks for adding the correction! I was thinking over why it would take place in 1820, when the Ottoman Empire wouldn't have a huge interest in that area. The Islamic Golden Age is perfect though! Happy to see more board games take inspiration from that history. Garphill Games' games have been strongly hit-or-miss for me. Loved Explorers of the North Sea, Raiders of the North Sea and Architects of the West Kingdom. I found Viscounts a little hard to get into. Haven't played Paladins or Shipwrights. They're all very much worth trying out, even with finding out some really aren't my thing. I'm looking forward to your solo video to see more of Wayfarers!
I'm getting strong A Feast For Odin vibes from this game ("there's too much to do! It's not point salad, it's point eight course dinner!") and that makes me want to play it even more.
What I like about your NZ games is that they are not milking one setup to the end, like Vikings or Terrinoth. So far we had Skythia, Kingdom of the Franks, Britain in Roman times and now medieval Baghdad. And that from a company from New Zealand. They are all just the right amount of different in gameplay that I want to buy them. For which I also blame you...
They also have a china one coming out and some sci-fi ones. Garphill are not the only big NZ designer/publisher too. Gale Force 9 that does Dune for example is from here. And Endeavor and Regicide were both designed by locals, and Auztralia published by one. Lots of great stuff happening in our small countries board game scene.
Men oh men... This game has so many moving parts. I love your 3minutes overviews of games and you have sold me into quite a few with them. But this one has so many layers and stuff that I actually got scared about it. And I am a person who likes those kind of challenges xD I am curious to try it, but I will need to see quite more things before doing any kind of decision on it. Btw, do you have any insight for Legacy of Yo? I am super curious about it.
Nah, I actually know very little about that one. No doubt ill get to see a copy pretty early on though as Shem and Sam don't live far from me and occasionally pop over to play games
Looks ok. Want to see a real playthrough not the TTS one. However. I really hesitant with the element of dice in the game. Wasn't clear but you roll then assign the numbers out? So if you can't roll what you need you have to crunch which could bring alot of AP?
Wow, 4/5 complexity. Correct me if I’m wrong but wasn’t it Shem/Sam’s intention to make the first game in each trilogy the lightest one? If so I’m curious as to what the next installments will be like.
I’m pretty sure they aren’t focusing on a complexity curve. They’ve said the next game will be quite crunchy but I don’t think the third in this series is planned so hard to say if this trilogy will go from lightest to heaviest. I’ve logged 6 plays as a playtester and yes it’s got a big decision space but the rules aren’t the issue. Just lots of freedom on how to build your engine. If you don’t find synergy you’ll not score well but you’ll also not struggle to comprehend the mechanics if you play games weighted at a 2.50 or higher with any regularity. This is my favorite of their games and I think most will agree. It’s extremely satisfying, and still loads of fun even when you don’t have your best game. There’s no game quite like this and I truly can’t wait to play a real copy.
And yeah, the complexity is the interconnection of all the moving parts more than lots of rules clauses. You need to keep a lot in your head to play it
The design is final, KS launching soon. The central board has to make the paths clear, and I think it succeeds in that. You’ll map a path there but spend most of your time looking at the beautiful cards!
Yeah, the art isn't a highlight of the game for me. Also, this is a review of the final game as it will be mechanically and presentation. Not a preview as such.
@@3MBG I tend to disagree. Considering that many cards are just meant to slip underneath other cards, they almost look too nice. And the build-up of the full landscape with land, sea and space in magical blue is stunning. I want that game. Honey? When do the kids move out? I need the spare room.
Art is 100% subjective of course. But some of the landscape cards are, well, in my opinion, very basic jobs. Looking at them close up and in person I was a bit unimpressed. I think whatever the mico is doing, its just not as good as the West Kingdom stuff. And certainly not as good as the stuff he did for Merchants Cove.
@@3MBG yea there are some voices saying it feels like it promotes the monarchistic ideology and some that say the history is shown by all perspectives and parties involved without further comments
Kickstarter will be live here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/shem/wayfarers-of-the-south-tigris

Oh, and stay tuned later in the weekend for our solo mode video
Intrigued by this! Which do you prefer - This or Paladins?
I really love Paladins, but I prefer Wayfarers to Viscounts.

@@3MBG Thank you!
I can't wait for this. Every game Garphill puts out is an absolute banger.
Really looking forward to this game and love having an overview from one of my favorite gaming TH-camrs!
Cheers Clark, thank you for that :)
Seconded
I'm getting strong A Feast For Odin vibes from this game ("there's too much to do! It's not point salad, it's point eight course dinner!") and that makes me want to play it even more.
Super excited to see how this plays out. In my opinion the west series outweighs the north. Let's see how the south ties in!
Excellent video for a brilliant game!
Was anxiously awaiting your video. Instant back.
This is a fantastic overview!
much obliged :)
Very excited for this one.
Neat! Definitely peeks an interest. Thank you for the review!
It looks beautiful! I might wait until it's published and played by a few first to see if I'll buy, but I'll want to play it for sure.
There are some gameplay clips out already if you want to watch a playthrough.
Have also heard Garphil will make a Tabletop Simulator version available during the Kickstarter.
@@3MBG I'll check them out. Truth is I realised this week I'm up to 140 games so I need to moderate. But this one is going on the wishlist for sure.
Garphill tend to put up a tts mod, yep. I tested the first one for Circadians first light back when they launched that
@@3MBG ended up selling a bunch of games lately and this one just looks better than all of them. Back on the KS train I guess!

Nice that both games recommended at the end of video are from Czechia :)
Ha, so they are. CGE and Vladimir Suchy, 100% not intentional but that's fascinating.
Six Months in a Leaky Boat. Classic.
With that silhouette, some people will be subconsciously tempted to light up a smoke.
I don't get it
Hahaha I'm smoking a Camel right now. Available in stores.
Oh, lol. Now i get it
Time to order the KALLAX: Garphill Games Edition.
If it were by anyone else. I am not sure I'd be interested. However, in Shem we trust.
Shem and Sam. I know how they work and they are a legit duo.
@@3MBG That's fair. I'll make sure to get it right next time.

Having playtested Legacy of Yu a little, I can confirm it is going to be an absolute belter. It is not nearly as crunchy as Wayfarers.
holy crap that was fast 🤯
If MERV & Teotihuacan were in a teleporter accident.
North Sea. West Kingdom. South Tigris.
4th trilogy will be set in the East, perchance? Far East? South East Indies?
It's east, but the west kingdom games included "strangers" from the North, South and East on cards. The East is Byzantium/Eastern Roman Empire
Looks ok. Want to see a real playthrough not the TTS one. However. I really hesitant with the element of dice in the game. Wasn't clear but you roll then assign the numbers out? So if you can't roll what you need you have to crunch which could bring alot of AP?
Yep, there is dice manipulation using the guild and worker spots as well if you need it.

It’s not going to be a BGG 4.0 weight.
Thanks for the preview! Is this still in prototype? That main board looks so… dry. Card art is nice though. Sounds like a crunchy game.

HYPE!
I really love Shem Phillips games, but I never get the opportunity to play 4 player games
Works great at 2
My issue goes the other way, we generally have minimum 5. I did buy Pandemic legacy to play with my wife, but after at least a year we're 1 game in...
Oh damn, then yeah, about the only Garphill game that really shines at 5 is Architects
I love architects, and we enjoy Raiders too.
👍
Not your Dads Viking game, lol.
What you think about the new 4x Brazil in terms of the political Implementation?
I've not encountered the game at all yet, so have no opinion
@@3MBG Would be interested to hear your take on it since it was a bit controversial
Had a quick look at it, definitely raised an eyebrow. But will hold judgement until i have a proper good look
@@3MBG yea there are some voices saying it feels like it promotes the monarchistic ideology and some that say the history is shown by all perspectives and parties involved without further comments
Not crazy about the board design. It looks like a grid, not a map. Also, I understand the ink spots, but they're pretty ugly.
