Tributes to David Letterman, Part 29 of 31: Norm Macdonald 1990, 2015

To commemorate the 5th anniversary of Dave retiring from late night television (his last show was on May 20, 2015), I've put together a series of "first and last" appearances, the latter paying tributes in their own ways to the last giant of late night (h/t Jason Zinoman).

Norm's leaving stand up is one of the most loved ones in the stand up circuit, so many comedians were talking about it afterwards.

The reason Norm was so emotional was that he was terminally ill, told no one until the day he died, and knew that this would be the last time he'd see Dave. Rewatching this just now with this understanding got me pretty choked up. Damn I miss Norm.

And yet it wasn’t the last time he’d see Dave. Dave twice guested on Norm’s online shows after this broadcast.
Also, Norm lived another six years. Hardly “terminal” at the time.

@@dongiller Didn't know about the 2 guest appearances, but I got my info from Dave himself. At a round table with Letterman, Dave Chappelle, Adam Sandler, Conan O'Brian and others, discussing Norm's death. Dave said he now understood Norm's emotions during this appearance. Apparently, Norm struggled with cancer for 9 years, and none of these comedians/friends knew about it.
