Both stunning scribes, Stephen. I am fortunate to own both - M800 in blue; M1000 in black. The tortoiseshell brown is beautiful & would suit either model. In truth, there's not a great deal of difference between them, save for the nib size, & the barrel & body (of course). I'd also like to see the flagship in a red stripe.... Thank you :D
A bit too much hard starts around there... not the first time I see this on Pelikans. Superb pens but i think it is better to buy them in a shop where you can actually test your pen and nib (especially for very broad nibs)
Just had a shock, I thought I had broken my brand new M800 because the back showed a gap after I turned the back cap a few times to drain the ink. I didn't have the special wrench you have, but a little pressure and a triangle ruler it worked just fine:) Opening and closing works just fine, also it doesn't scratch the gold parts, since the ruler is made of plastic. Maybe this information helps others. Great videos btw! Keep it going!
Thank you very much: I have an M605 which is (in my opinion) identical to an M600. I just checked the turning knob area, I couldnt find the flat areas to put in the TWSBI tool. Do you have a hint for me? Thanks in advance.!
sbrebrown Which is really funny. I have come to the same conclusion; Pelikan pens are supposed to be wet enough to accommodate the EXTREMELY dry Pelikan 4001 Ink.
Why don't you use Noodler's? Would you use it in your m1000? The flow is so wet in mine that I'm looking for a deep rich black that doesn't 'nib-creep' all over the place like the Noodler's OMB I'm currently using.
Excellent shootout Stephen! I think these are my 2 favourite pens. Question, is there an o-ring or anything sealing the nib unit to prevent it from leaking? Thanks
Nice video Stephen ! But please tell us if the tortoise M800 have a black-plated brass piston, or if it have a plastic piston ? I have a green M800 and I can assure you that the piston is made of brass just like your M1000. In fact, I choose the M800 just because the brass piston, otherwise I have boughted the M600.
Is there a way to clean in between the tines of Pelikan nibs? I "floss" my Lamy tines when i notice the ink flow is drye. Holding the nib to the light i can see a very fine piece of paper fiber sometime which is why i floss it with a very thin sheet of plastic. Btw, thanks to your previous reply of my questions, i have placed an order to goulet for a EF Twsbi 580 and 4 bottles of Noddlers. So you dont recommend using Noodler's in my M800?
Hi thank you for all the effort to show us how these pen work really in a pen geek's hand. I have been trying to make up my mind from the videos of your channel, but i find myself a bit confused. I was dreaming of having a 149, but after watching your videos, i lost this desire. You can not change anything on the pen (as far as i know) and although the nib looks fantastic, it has some skipping issues compared to M1000. With all the money you invested, it is not really acceptable for me. As a more experienced FP lover, what would be your advice to me!
Would consider doing an ink comparison on Iroshizuku vs Noodlers regarding their safety/performance/price ratios. I read a lot of mixed opinions on the benefits of Iroshizuku despite its high price vs the risks of damage from Noodlers inks despite their wonderful inks and relative lower prices.
Thanks again for the great videos. You often mention how one fountain pen seems to "like" one ink and not another, almost as if the pen had a will of its own, and I kind of know what you mean. Would you consider talking a little about this in future shoot-outs: tell us what the pens like and do not like? Might be interesting to shed a little light on the different _personalities_ of the pens in addition to their mechanical differences.
I feel like most of the shootouts are actually pens of different classes. Fair aside, it does give us some useful comparisons, and we get a nice comedy skit.
I have to say that my vote goes to the M1000, but I accept the M800 as a gift as well :-) of course ere is the third option, the one you have and my favorite. Both! Great writers, enjoy! Btw, I wouldn't use Akkermann ink either since although I love it, in my experience it tends to clog.
A m1000 brown tortoise would be a god send. I would buy that so quickly. That style looks awesome, they need to do a limited edition m1000 in that finish.
Did I catch the M1000 singing? Does that ever bother you? I have a Carene that sings, and it actually drove my girlfriend to stop stealing it from me. To cope I actually write at an off angle.
Hehe...and I presume you didn't mind? :) Reminds me of how I met a certain Tigger I know...a young Tigger who showed up at my house one day and wanted to play and have a friend. He hasn't left home since, and he's one silly little guy. :)

Soo...Will there be a Montblanc 146 vs M800 shootout anytime soon?

I also have issues with Parker Quink flow in my Pelikan M200. It makes the pens prone to hard starting. It is fine with any other ink.
It's a pretty dry ink, I think that's why it does this.
sbrebrown Which is really funny. I have come to the same conclusion; Pelikan pens are supposed to be wet enough to accommodate the EXTREMELY dry Pelikan 4001 Ink.
Parker quinck gives me trouble in all my pens, except parker.
Actually it does have a brass piston. Pelikan made them in black specially for the tortoise edition. There's a thread on FPN about it.

Thank you for this shoot-out! I have an m800 Tortosie on the way (thanks to your review) and already own an m1000. This is great information.

Didnt you say currently you don't own a pelikan?????

Odd thought m800's had brass piston parts does the tortoise m800 have a plastic piston parts does it feel really light like a m600?
Looks like the M1000 has a brass piston housing, and the m800 is plastic?

I'd get an M1000.
can you ink these directly into the barrel when the nib is off?
with an eyedropper or syringe for example?
If you want to, yes. It's not how the pens were designed to be used because that will not prime the feed
Sorry if this is a stupid question, but what form of calligraphy were you using when testing both pens? Cursive Italic?
I don't think there's a name for that writing style: it is my personal version of the cursive I learned in primary school :-).
Well I think it looks great :)

Ink preferences helps reveal its personality even more!
Being the owner of a Delta Dolce Vita Piston pen would probably be good practice for me since it is a large pen. I'm still considering an M1000.
Hey Stephen, would you say the M1000 becomes uncomfortable to write with after a time? Or does it matter that much?
Allan's idea is great! Talking about a pens
Looks like the 2B M1000 is a bit wider than the 3B M800
Great shootout! I love my M800's, but I NEED an M1000 still!

Your M800 doesn't have a brass piston?
Pelikan pens are more user friendly than Mont Blanc pens. I like your tortoise M800 very much:)
I feel like most of the shootouts are actually pens of different classes. Fair aside, it does give us some useful comparisons, and we get a nice comedy skit.
Well done Prof. Stephen!
When you say "it's already shot", do you mean the video or the dog? ;)
Which one do you feel takes the least effort to write with?
The M1000.
It's exactly like writing with the springy M1000 when the stiff M800 isn't around...
Gah read through the other comments so its a brass piston just coloured black. Pity I can't edit comments from a tablet

Hehe... :) I'm curious...so how did you and Lord Windermere meet? It's not often that anyone encounters a stuffed lobster in a top hat, after all. :P
Nice to see Lord Windermere, but who's the dog? He or She's in a lot more videos than the mad lobster. :)
A m1000 brown tortoise would be a god send. I would buy that so quickly. That style looks awesome, they need to do a limited edition m1000 in that finish.
Hello Stephen and Lord Windemere! Have you ever been tempted by the Pelikan Toledo?
Not really. I'm not ahuge fan of overlay pens.
Did I catch the M1000 singing? Does that ever bother you? I have a Carene that sings, and it actually drove my girlfriend to stop stealing it from me. To cope I actually write at an off angle.
I seem to notice the dog starts barking when you write about the lazy dog. I think you hurt his/her feelings.
The m1000 will be a pen I will purchase at some point.
Hehe...and I presume you didn't mind? :) Reminds me of how I met a certain Tigger I know...a young Tigger who showed up at my house one day and wanted to play and have a friend. He hasn't left home since, and he's one silly little guy. :)
I I think I agree with a guy who wrote the book when he said the M800 was the perfect fountain pen. (For my money at least, anyway.)
Thank you very much! :)
I'm curious...what's it like hanging out with Lord Windermere when Prof. Danglebury isn't around? :)
At last ....
"byb..."
