Japan is getting cheaper now. I'm so glad we decided to move and live here. We live in a 2-bedroom house with a living room and a dining/kitchen (just 1 train ride half an hour from Shinjuku!) where we pay 460 USD per month. It has loads of balcony glass doors in both the living room and kitchen area to a wooden deck so it's super bright, plus a bay window facing the Japanese garden of our neighbor. Same style as hers: cream wallpapers and dark wood finishing. It's beside two rivers and its riverbank parks lined with sakura trees in both directions, a sprinkling of shrines and temples, and we can see Mt. Fuji too. Best part is it's near clinics, supermarkets, shops, and resto on a main road just a minute's walk away. And it's SO SO quiet and peaceful, except during the afternoon when children come out and play or dogs yipping.

I don't like having gas because I don't want to pay both an electric bill and gas bill. After I was screwed over by my local gas company raising my bill $100 every month of winter (and I paid it off every month in full without any rolling over, all until it got to $400 in a single month), I decided never again am I getting gas. I'll freeze to death before that. I live in an apartment with all-electric right now but I'm looking to move. I just sent an email today to the location of my first pick apartment if they're all electric. If not, it's going to be space heaters for winter and boiling water to wash with on a hot plate (not a gas stove). I refuse to get the gas turned on. I live in the south so summer would be the real kicker, not winter.

My friends and I stayed in an AirBnb a few years back in Tokyo that had one of those automatic bath/speaker things and I would either press the speaker button (it would make a noise) when I was in the bathroom or walking past it, or when they were in the bathroom (the other end was in the kitchen) and it would scare them every time. It was fun.

I only started in July so haven’t reached my first year either, but enjoy writing the highlights of the day, and know it will be more exciting each year, looking back at where/what I was doing years earlier. Highly recommend this journal. I got so excited to see someone else who uses this 😂

  • @lynda.grace.14

Gorgeous! No wonder you don't wish to move again--ever. Since you asked, I vote for the deep gold curtain. Replacing it would be pricey, isn't in the spirit of sustainable, and this one works. It warms the cool concrete/black palette you have going but remains neutral. However, if you want to further integrate it with the rest of the decor, you could echo a note of that colour in number of subtle ways--text on a pillow, pots for plants, a poster, a catch-all tray, anything really--to make the colour seem more intentional.

Lovely apartment! The two shelves the TV is sitting on is really smart, same as the shelves close to your kitchen, so useful. And wow fluffy trunks, love 'm. The light switch is really cool too, I think I saw that before in Japan but it is such a nice thing to have because it changes the atmosphere a lot. The sink is awesome and the grill seems so cool (can you not put a pizza in the grill?).
That shower in your bathroom looks so amazing. WTH a tv and dimmed and colored lights in your bath(room), I love it. Haha such an amazing place!!

  • @IanHollis

    This video made me happy.
As for the curtains, I'd go with "Golden brown" or "Burnt golden brown"
The cement panels are too repetitive not to be fake.
$750/month for a place like that is *ridiculously* good value.
I hope I can be lucky enough to live somewhere just as cozy in Japan one day. Somewhere in the far-north, perhaps.
