  • No one ever mentions this about Penny Hardaway's career and what led to his injuries. He's still legendary in my eyes, but yes his Growth was Stunted. Here's why.

    interesting analysis on your part here. I had never considered the fact that if Penny had developed an outside shot, he would have saved himself much pounding from defenders.

      AndreaBaixinho Hell yea man. I got to put a lot of it on his Era though. Guys just didn't think that way then. Being the man meant you could drive at will and be athletic and strong. Fly high like MJ. These new guys learned from that maybe subconsciously or on purpose and are having longer careers for the most part. Wish DROSE learned that. Penny was on path to being something vicious. Really enjoyed researching him. He was amazing!

But, with hindsight being 20/20 & reliving some of these ol career highlights….iCan see now, what may contributed to stunted growth. literally.
      Muscle mass. iNever realized how extremely thin he was. Especially for player with his capabilities & nature athleticism. I would’ve love to see him seen build more muscle tissue & able to operate to the likes of luka, harden, ant-man…or if not by those means,

    I don't know man I remember Penny having a good jumper, complete overall offensive game, unstoppable post moves and only second to Jamal Crawford as far as a big guard with the best handles. The season after Shaq left, during the Heat playoff series he went crazy and dropped 2-3 40 point+ back-to-back games to try and avoided elimination - with no additional help. Next season, he added weight, didn't change his jumping biomechanics, got injured and boom that ends an automatic HOF career. I also remember Shaq was always was and still is jealous of Penny's success. What's weird is he always tries to downplay how nice Penny was. Even mentioned he hated the Little Penny doll on an episode of Open Court and also said Payton was the best PG of the 90's. Shaq's revisionist history. Interesting since he referenced Penny wasn't ready when he was admittedly intimidated by The Dream in the finals. The only time he wasn't jealous of another star was D. Wade because he himself was on the decline.

      Couldn't agree more. Penny had a good enough jumper that you couldn't sag off of him, so to me, his stunt really is all about the knee injury. It's a shame people forget how great he was. I believe he was 1st team all NBA in his third year, which is quite an accomplishment. I also remember his midrange was pretty good, and you also have to remember that people weren't really shooting threes then like they do now, so he didn't really need to develop that range at that point in his career. As I mentioned before, his stunt really is about the knee. Without that, he goes to the HOF, no question

      Penny had a great jumper. He shot 52% in his prime. He didn't have great range out to 3 point land, however. I think the author here argues he should have developed this. I argue that he never had a chance because injuries derailed him. It wasn't from weae and tear

      W C He also said on Oprah master class that the reason he left was because he didn't feel the support from penny when it was his time to get his money, which led him to getting in his feelings about penny. He knew the team told penny it was his team and penny was shading his calls and not communicating with him and having his back in meetings so he bounced. He apologized to penny because he got emotional and should've just reached out harder to penny. But penny imo was being shady. Shaq was just being the bigger man apologizing.

The number of 3's being shot when Penny played wasn't as high as today. it was like 4-5 guys shooting 500+ 3's in those times now a days it's 20 or more players shooting that many I believe the number of players 6'10 or taller that can knock down 3's is way higher than Penny Era also.

I seriously doubt Penny "undervalued shaq's importance to the team" for one that really contradicts Penny's personality, also find an interview where Penny talks about the pick up games while filming Blue Chips and he will break it down for you. And it's well documented by Shaq himself that HE NOT PENNY was the one overly concerned with the world's perception on if Orlando was considered Shaqs or Pennys team. That and the Magic front office lowballing Shaq at contract time is why he left for LA. Also saying Penny shouldve developed a 3 Ball with his driving like Dame and Steph while using his poor 3pt % as a point for the argument is being biased to the game today. ON BALL GUARDS DID NOT SHOOT CONTESTED 3's IN THE 90's. Reggie Miller arguably the greatest 3 point shooter ever only took about 6 a game and he never was the primary ball handler guys like Westbrook today take 10 a game and he is a terrible 3 pt shooter . So that argument made absolutely no sense at all. And penny never got any where close to his late prime years where guys cut from the same athletic cloth developed a jump shot. guys like J.Kidd and D wade had that opportunity and extended theyre productivity into their 30's. Pennys career was done at 26. And Pennys half court game was post up 1st, Penny driving and playmaking was the fail safe option for the best Orlando teams. The driving came from the open court Penny was DYNAMIC on the fast break.

    Nice piece. Penny was my second favorite player after Jordan. It’s a shame youngn’s don’t really know him. As far a stunt 2 you got to remember that 1.) the entire league really didn’t shoot the 3 like that and 2.) He was a true PG and probably should have really horned those SG skills, but when you have Shaq on the block, D Scott/Nick Anderson on the wings your job is to set the table. Looking forward to Lawrence Moten next.

      Excellent points. He really was a true PG, and he shot the ball well enough to keep defenders honest. In Orl, he had two snipers in DScott and Nick Anderson, so he always had space to operate, and as you pointed out, the league wasn't as three crazy then as it is now. His stunt really is about the knee injuries and nothing more. Had he never gotten hurt, he would be in the Hall of Fame.

    If you recall during Shaq’s last year in Orlando 95-96, he was out for a large part of the first month of that season due a to a broken thumb he got in the preseason against the Miami Heat. Due the time he was out, Penny went on a tear and think that may played a part in him not fighting harder for Shaq to come back. He was probably thinking “If the big fella comes back. Cool. If not I got this.”

    This was great video again. However, I blame it all on the knee injury. I thought Penny's jumper was good enough it kept people honest and defenders had to play him. When we talking jumper are talking Steph Curry or Jason Kidd in the later part of his career? His knee just could not hold up. Phoenix Penny was hard to guard and gave a Kobe and Shaq LA all they could handle. I don't know his knee just couldn't hold up in my humble opinion. Bruh, I really am enjoying your video's great work. I would like to know what happened to Cory Alexander and Jason Gardner.

    • @stuntedgrowth
      @stuntedgrowth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He had an ok jumper, he just wasn't a good enough deep ball shooter to where he trusted it, and he didn't shoot enough. The era he was in had some to do with it though. Him having those shooters even more made him have to drive and make plays for them to shoot. Those guys couldn't make their own plays consistently to win games. Penny had to do all that for them.

  • @rashb3994
    @rashb3994 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    With all due respect the outside shot thing is way off with the exception of three's which weren't taken like they are now. He always had a nice mid range, which opened up his drives. That's why he was so deadly, plus a quick feet. A lot of his drives were passes so I wouldn't say so much driving crushed him like Dywane Wade or Rose. I could agree with overloading though, and coming back from injury before he's ready. He's always more of "what if" based on early severe injury. So if his body held up as long as Jordan and Kobe he would've evolved like they did. I will agree about having Shaq from the start helped. I never thought of that.

    • @stuntedgrowth
      @stuntedgrowth  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yup. That's what I said. He didn't have or shoot much of the deep ball. Even driving to pass takes a toll on you and he had to a lot with those shooters around him who weren't creators themselves. Dame crosses half and pulls almost half his attempted game shots. That or they run a high play for him right at the top of the key and there is no creating anything. Just rise up off one, two screens. Penny had a cool shot/mid range. He even had an ok 3(even though his stats confirm he was a poor 3 shooter) but he didn't use it enough and a lot of that was his Era. I mentioned that. Salute.

    Good video. Interesting take on Penny. Penny is a few years older than me, so I've began hearing of him in the late 80s as a high school basketball superstar in the making. He would mentioned along with some Chicago high school basketball legends, in particular with Jamie Brandon, from King H. S. here. He was ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING in high school and most certainly at MSU and early nba years. As you mentioned, I would never doubt his work ethic, but, I'm wondering exactly how strong was he physically for the longer haul. Being from Chicago, I saw MJ and Scottie at the genesis of their careers. For them and some others, you could observe that they really put a lot into their bodies and them seemingly getting stronger. I mean and know this isn't a tell-all sign for everybody. But, at the onset of their respective careers, Penny and Scottie had similar body dynamics, yet Scottie was pretty strong with what seemed to be a narrow body frame. If I'm not mistaken, he and MJ really took the strength and conditioning aspect seriously. I just wonder did Penny take that part of the game as serious as he did being a driving playmaker. I would call him "Puny" while rooting for him except when he played the Bulls. But, your right with the "j" assessment as well. Maybe it's possible that getting shot damaged his muscles, nerves and etc more than we'll ever know. I said all that to say that this was a pretty good video on Penny "Puny😆" Hardaway. May the Creator and the Ancestors give him the relevant understanding to guide those he's now coaching and around to become positive vessels for themselves and those that they come in contact with on and most importantly off and away from the court💪🏿

    I was born in Seattle in 1973, where I grew up. Sonics and Blazers fan. Japanese-American. So, I know all too painfully, "Michael Jordan/Sam Bowie." Add "Kevin Durant/Greg Oden." But as much as, from 1993-1996, I could have said "Penny Hardaway/Shawn Bradley," that is NOWHERE near as terrible as Jordan or even Durant. Bradley was solid, even if not a superstar. Bradley was NOT a bust. He played longer than Bowie and Oden (not that Bowie and Oden didn't do their best--they did). But, Penny, with his own injuries, fell off after 2001, and unfortunately, didn't turn out to be Jordan (well, who has), or even Durant. I remember in 1999, I was SO hoping those rumors about Penny Hardaway being traded to Portland would have come true.
