At a screening of the play’s TV adaptation for BBC television series The Jazz Age, comedian Alistair McGowan discusses Coward’s work with actors Penelope Keith, Keith Barron and Maria Aitken and John Gorrie, who directed an adaptation of Coward’s Private Lives.

    Maria Aitken pronounces " Coward " as " Card " - how odd.

      It's not 'odd' to the ears of a native British-English speaker (which I deduce you are not). Aitken's idiolect is a mixed bag: for example at 9.23 she says 'gonna' - which has only been part of the americanisation of (excuse me, no other term will do) educated rather-upper-middle-class British pronunciation: to go with 'card' for 'coward,' Aitken's pronunciation of 'going to' should/would, until only twenty years ago, have been 'geng to'...
