What is the New Russian Peace Flag?

  • Since the start of Russia's Invasion of Ukraine, countries around the world have come out in opposition, often using the Ukrainian flag as a symbol of resistance. For Russian citizens opposed to the war, their flag became a symbol associated with the occupying forces, and so a new Russian flag, a Russian peace flag of white-blue-white was posted and popularised both online and at protests.

    This sounds like nonsense, but I can’t deny the resemblance of the protest flag with the flag of the Argentine province of Tucumán, the flag that is now in use for the province was the first Argentine flag, made by one of our founding fathers, Manuel Belgrano, he based it on the revolutionary cockade used by Argentines. It’s probably completely coincidental, but I still couldn’t ignore it’s resemblance

    A boy snatched a tricolor flag with its staff from above a house-gate, ripped off the blue and white strips, and raised the red remainder of the “national” flag high above the crowd. Dozens of people followed his example. A few minutes later a multitude of red flags were waving above the mass of people. White and blue scraps of material lay everywhere and the crowd trampled them with their feet.

    The Novgorod Republic was definitely not a more democratic state; it was very clearly an oligarchy. Power was almost entirely centered among the wealthy elite families of the time, which during Ivan's time, were the boyars. Republic =/= freedom, it just means their society wasn't monarchial (although it was, their Rurikid princes were just elected by their elite).
    Also, side note, Magellan TV has a documentary about Ivan IV, where historians and psychologists explain Ivan's behavior becomes more understandable when you look at the way the boyars (most of them from Novgorod's sphere) abused him.

    Many people wonder what is the reason to change the flag? The most important one is that after 24th February Russian opposition living abroad could not use the official flag in Pro-Ukraine rallies because official flags were used by pro-Putin Russians alongside with the "Z" symbol to show support for the invasion. So there was a deep need for some symbols for the Russian opposition to develop some sort of distinction symbols to be absolutely clear and easy to explain what are they standing for. Honestly speaking historical references and other matters of symbolism were much less important in making the decision on adopting this flag.

    The actual Belarusian flag is exactly this peace flag but the blue stripe is red. I don't think this would fit Russia though. Belarusians have a considerable amount of history with their red white flag and it actually looks good as a state flag. I don't see any reason for why the tricolour which represented Russia for centuries could be replaced by a flag that doesn't even look that good.
    The French, Portuguese, Americans, British and Turks committed atrocities under the same flags they have now, seems dumb to me if anyone advocates to use the blue white flag as the state flag, as if the Russian tricolour is the Third Reich flag or something. Plus the WW2 German flag was also not representative of the Germans and their history either. It was an Ideological flag exactly like the peace flag, it's not long lasting like Russian culture and history.
    A better alternative would be perhaps using a lighter shade of the blue and red if the flag even needs to be changed.

      First, the symbolism of the Russian flag colours is relatively obscure even in Russia and was "retconned" into it anyway. In fact, more Russians knew that these colours suppose to copy a Dutch flag, rather than that they have any meaning.
      Second, it's a flag used mostly by liberals. They do not care for each individual person in the country, but not for a people as a separate entity. Besides, the people in Russia are often understood as supporters of authoritarianism and general anti-humanism. They do not consider themselves a part of these grassroots masses and don't want to be perceived as them, this is actually the point of the flag.

On the one hand, it can be useful for Russians living abroad, they can express their opinion against the war in order to at least somehow avoid possible discrimination. But on the other hand, I am categorically against this flag as a state flag. In fact, the current Russian flag has no official generally accepted meaning of colors. There are many definitions of what the colors of this flag are stay for, in some of these red means courage and bravery, as well as statehood. And it seems to me that negative associations can be matched to almost any color, even white (if you think about it, white is the color of one of the narcotic substances, lol) the main thing is to have a good imagination. Besides, this whole idea that "we will change the flag and immediately embark on the path of democracy, and everyone will love us again" seems silly to me.

      @tofuthegod 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really? It seems more like its trying to go with "God, justice, peace" as the light blue is a typical symbol for Justice.
      It would also make some sense if we look at the flag makers goals.
      They wish to make a new Russia and a new image for that Russia.
      God and religion as a whole is important to Russians so removing it would cause controversy. Plus "god" didn't cause the suffering of the people.
      Justice makes sense as it may symbolize the new age for Russia. One where those who caused others to suffer are put to justice.
      And peace is self explanatory. It most likely wants to show that "Hey Russia isn't the big scary bear to the east that's gonna eat all of you eventually"
      Note: I will not respond to shitty debates on whos wrong or right in this conflict. I personally hope that the human suffering going on will just end as soon as possible!

    I'd love to see a video for the Belarusian flag since you mentioned it. I read in "Rise and Fall of Belarusian Nationalism" by Rudling that the red-white-green colors were used by the Belarusian bolsheviks much earlier than when they adopted the flag with those colours in the 1950s. Though they are still more recent "national colors" than the white-red-white.
    More than anything, though, I'd just love to see more people discuss the Belarusian People's Republic of 1918 and raise awareness of the white-red-white flag.

    As someone who has a passion for Russian history above all other nations including his own, I really liked the Novgorod reference (albeit, it's a little misleading, since the Republic of Novgorod was an entity which predated the whole flag and anthem shebang we do nowadays, but I don't think that connections by name should be underestimated); Russian intellectuals were actually somewhat obsessed for quite a while with a Muscovy-Novgorod dichotomy for a premise on how to model the state, especially during the Enlightenment, so it's extra potent for that purpose.
    Addressing the chances of it becoming the official state flag, the only issue I can see is that the Russian political landscape is not likely to allow it, and even if regime change does occur it's highly unlikely to be meaningful in a way palatable to the West without disintegration of the Russian state in near-entirety (a multivariate threat from both within and without that I believe to be the impetus for this conflict). If there's ever a two-word description I could give to describe Russian history, I would say "stably volatile". It's far too vast, diverse, and riddled with age-old social and geographical problems to hold together without an authoritarian structure, and consequently Russians tend to have a different concept of freedom to us in the west who often conflate it with political participation. I'd say (anecdotally) that attitudes are somewhat in line with the Slavophiles of the 19th Century, though few would self-identify as such because it's kind of a niche curio topic; a strong leaning to a freedom "from" politics instead of one to participate in it, and while the Soviet Union further illiberalised it, the substrate was already there. I'm risking generalisations and deterministic traps here, so I'd like to take a pause to remind myself and others that these tropes are not universal and definitive, but there are powerful strings of continuity which date back to the Mongol Conquest at the latest which have centralised power and formed a different social contract to the one we understand; one which the West seldom accommodates (This is core to my belief that surmising the conflict as strictly "Putin's fault" or something of that ilk is overly simplistic and convenient; it's also why I lament the wasted potential improving relations with Russia between the Soviet collapse and ~2013, something I wholeheartedly believe to be the fault of America and Europe by giving legitimacy to the suspicions that NATO was a Russophobic alliance all along. It really was a once in a lifetime chance that we squandered).
    I think the flag is a nice gesture in theory, but I'd be remiss to disregard the suspicion that it's similar in principal to the Eurocentric view of Gorbachev who is near-unanimously considered a hero in the West and far less so the deeper you go into the Slavic sphere. It's a hopeful assumption that a Russian national narrative can accept anything less than hegemony over a pan-Slavic (or at least east-Slavic) sphere of influence, for example. It's their Monroe doctrine after all, and while we like to pretend we've all grown up in our part of the world, they're playing the same game as us on a geopolitical level and neither side is willing to accept an introspective reality in their narratives. Our media is applying a double standard just as much as theirs is. They have propaganda, we have "unbiased journalism"; they have corruption, we have "lobbying".
    Side note among side notes: Their yellow and black coat of arms flag is objectively the best looking and most iconic.
    I've bounced around too much with this (I'll blame it on sleep deprivation. I might review it later, and then again I might not), but I hope something in this word salad made enough sense to be worth reading. I'd be really interested to hear more about this development in future.

    @7DaysChanel_VandenReich ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I'm Russian. The main meaning of the white-blue-white flag, as already mentioned in the video, is the opposition of the current government, which originates from the monarchy.
    Russia appeared on January 16, 1547, it is very similar to the unification of Germany. There were many principalities, but the main contenders for unification were the Grand Duchy of Moscow (in the West it is called Muscovy, but the Russians never called themselves that) and the Novgorod Republic. As you can see, Moscow was a monarchy with a grand Duke at its head, who became tsar after the creation of Russia. And Novgorod was a republic, there were princes there too, but they were subject to the ruling council (parliament), which a person without a title could enter. If Novgorod had won the war, Russia would have been a republic back in the 15th century. The white-blue-white flag is the flag of Novgorod.
    A little more history about the Russian flag.
    The white-blue-red flag was created in the 18th century as a trade flag and was installed only on merchant ships, it was not a national flag. The first national flag was a black-yellow-white flag, adopted by decree of Emperor Alexander the Liberator in 1858. In 1894, Nicholas 2 changed the flag to white-blue-red. Although the white-blue-red flag is older, but the first official flag of Russia is the black-yellow-white flag. Before 1858, only the golden cloth banners with a black double-headed eagle were used.
    The most insulting thing is that Emperor Alexander the Liberator was the most liberal ruler in the history of Russia, he abolished serfdom, banned the death penalty, began writing the constitution and began to create a parliament. In general, his ideas were too liberal for that time. But he was killed by terrorists and did not have time to implement all the reforms. The throne was supposed to pass to his eldest son, who was as liberal as he was, but the heir died in Italy during an illness. As a result, his middle son Alexander the Peacemaker inherited the throne. He was nicknamed the peacemaker because there was no war under his rule, but his internal policy was dictatorial. He canceled all his father's liberal reforms, executed people for dissent, repressed other peoples, planted religion and many others. And now its black-yellow-white flag is used by the Nazis, although it represents freedom and democracy.

      С ЧЖБ вообще история смешная, ибо его используют нацисты-имперцы. Они хотят построить национальную империю. Это буквально как коммунистический капитализм.

      В Новгороде никто не мог править без титула, там была олигархия. И этот флаг не имеет никакого отношения к Великому Новгороду.

    Russia: can I copy your homework?
    Belarus: sure, make sure you change a bit so the teacher doesn't notice.

    I know quite a lot of political context of my country and i want to warn you: this isn't a protest flag. It doesn't bear national meaning that white-red-white has for Belarus. It's hard to explain the entire history of Russian Opposition movement, so i have to put it short: Untill 2011 opposition movement in Russia split in 2 branches: SysLib (Systemic Liberals) who supported "soft reforms" and Off-system opposition: (nationalists with other small groups) who supported overthrow. Needless to say, Putin's nomenclature were much more brutal to Off-system. Alexei Navalny - the most importand figure in Russian opposition originaly came from nationalists, but as there were less and less of them alive or unimprisoned, he started to work with SysLibs more. By the 2019 Navalny is imprisoned himself and with that Off-system opposition is crushed completely. As expected, repressions turn on SysLib wing and it migrates alltogether. There are a lot of Off-system oppositionists in immigration as well, but nowhere near as much as SysLibs and they don't have political connections and voice. Consider: Same people who said "North Korea is better than revolution" in 2011-2019 now coming up with new flag for Russia, new sanctions for people(not nomenclature) and counting how much do they want to take from people who are already impoverished by Putin. I do admit that i myself associate with Off-system, but my allegiance isn't for no reason: SysLibs are to blame for brutal crush of Bolotnaya protest in 2011. This is why i think that White-Blue-White is an anti-national flag. If you want to know more, you'll have to listen hard - People who tell this story have a very quiet voice.
