Fun video! I've owned 3 XS650's over the years. They're easy to work on, have decent power and aftermarket parts are abundant. However, the carburetors were always problematic. I got tired of messing with carbs and every bike since has been EFI. I still miss the XS650 once in a while, but I don't miss wrenching on it all the time 🙂 Good luck!
I was thinking more about this this morning, and I really do like that Yamaha's XSR line seems to be a call back to the Seca series, and I actually love how the XSR700 is like a modernized, blended sport cruiser version of Bugzy's XS650 and how the XSR900 is very much like a Seca 750/900 -- such cool bikes!
@@justinmantell Dunno if you watch "Kaplan America" youtube but they have some videos on the XJ650. (I would love to get down to Conn. to their museum someday.)
I loved the comment about "Tele-Tubby", it made me laugh. Glad you got the sticker but sorry the bike isn't running properly on the way home. (I had a problem with one of my bikes years ago and I thought it was a gas issue, and it ended up being a problem with the electrical system (just the battery). It started running rough, then bucking, and then died. leaving me stranded me down in Nantasket.) What was that yellow bike that Justin rides? I love your videos, especially the ones that aren't perfectly scripted and have your cute little bloopers in them too. 🙂
I ride bikes and watch a lot of videos about riding.. YT has been wanting me to watch a Bugzy Moto video for awhile and this thumbnail with that XS650 in it came up I had to watch ..yours was amazing BTW... In high school way back in 1977 I had a 1975 XS I got cheap from the bike shop I worked at part time and loved it! I have watched all your videos from here forward so I got here late but The Great Bugzdini and the New British Steel bikes and learning about the best Onion rings around and you two are Terrific! just subscribed!
Cool bike. In Virginia if it's a vintage motorcycle you can get an antique license plate, which means you don't need to get it inspected or re-up the registration each year. No registration stickers needed. You pay one fee at the DMV when you register and title the bike and the tag they give you is good for life. Or as long as you own the bike. Do they have that option in Mass? You better figure out what's going on with the brake fluid on that Harley. That stuff will destroy your paint and other finishes. I don't even know what you mean when you say it's shooting out of the mastercylinder. That sounds really bad.
MA has antique insurance for vehicles over 40 years old, which is good because it's only about $75 per year, but state inspections every May are law. Brake fluid shooting will be documented in a coming video when I flush and bleed the lines for the front brakes, complete with Mass accents and antics 🫡
Yeah, I almost dropped my xsr900 the same way the first time I rode it because the steering doesn't turn very sharp but now I'm use to it and love the bike. The dealer should have warned you about that quirk the bike has.
All possible on this little beast! We are going to go through the carbs and resync the vacuum after replacing the rectifier -- it does seem like the combination of the Gonzo Mod (DIY TCI swap from a Suzuki GN250) and the who-knows-what rectifier is slamming a rev limit of 3500 - 4K for 1st and 2nd and maybe 3rd gear. Frok 4th and 5th you can continue to wind it up like normal, so just more "features" to get used to in this new update 😂
Sounds like South Australia. Unless you get a defect from the police once a vehicle's registered that's it. You just pay your rego each time it's due and off you go.
That'll get things set straight. Part of the issue with my Sporty running like dogsnot is that the "Super E" on there is an eBay special direct from China because gofast parts are $$$, so my quest to find the right jets is made difficult by the fact that all the jets in the carb kit are blank/without size numbers stamped on 🙃 so it will be a fun winter project getting the Ironhead dialed in for Spring
We are running a TCI (CDI?) off a Suzuki GN250 because Bugzy's original burnt out back in October 2023 and now it's hating the new rectifier for gears 1 & 2 with a NEW rev limit of around 3500 RPM so Bugzy has to hoon outta those gears quicker to get into full throttle mayhem from 3rd onward. Stalling is new, but that's the spice of life! 🤣 Vintage bikes, baby ❤️
@@justinmantell It may be too small for Bugzy, but Bettencourt have the SCL500 and I think it would be cool, especially if she likes the scrambler vibe.
that SCL500 is definitely a neat piece, but Bugzy and I need to make sure our next bikes are capable of highway cruising without pushing the mechanical limit, as we're currently limited in that regard with the 83 XS650 and 78 Sporty -- I still see a 1000cc+ in Bugzy's future, just not sure what she's gonna pick! 😄
@@justinmantell I'm certainly "enjoying the ride" as she test rides these bikes and chooses her next one. (There is always the Rebel 1100 which is capable, relatively light (487lbs), under $10K, has ABS, has a 6 speed, but isn't unique and interesting like some of the other bikes she is looking at are.....but logically it is perfect, but I can't see a love affair there, because it is so practical and vanilla.)
Justin I noticed it on your reaction when Bugzy had he mishaps on the Sportster she rented and when she dropped the Yamaha “it is a light bike to pick up and how did you like the bike.” 😂😎Dave H
Hope your relatives in TN are safe with all the rain and wind from Hurricane Helene down there. Keeping them in my prayers.
Thank you so much 💓
super kind words, thank you ❤️

3 of them! That’s pretty cool! Yeah it’s definitely a love/hate thing lol
My first was also an ‘81 Yamaha! 550 Seca. Great time for bikes.
Ooooh the Seca series was sooooo sweet 😍

🤣is it our pace is too slow, or our life is just hectic enough to keep you engaged? 🤣
Hahaha thanks for sticking around 🤪
When they are right there is nothing like an XS/TX 650. Unfortunately my ‘78 Special is not….
this is what we hear, too. The 83 Heritage Special is a blessing and light curse 😅🥲
I would guess the carb needs cleaning, or maybe a fuel filter?
Or maybe bad gas, or.....
Vacuum lines...
Okay, I'm done.

What state? and is your bike modern or vintage/antique?
Hahaha yeah you gotta tell us where you’re at
Wait are you wearing a Bruins hat?!
CT aint anyplace id recommend yet at least we don't need to have our used irons inspected.
Another benefit of living in Florida, no state inspections

there's an inspection sticker requirement for Massachusetts, but not in Florida, or Tennessee as we learned during our road trip last month
