All of my five whole house water filters (two houses, paralleled sediment and/or series charcoal) filters came with mating plastic encircling wrenches that readily loosen the housings. You either got shortchanged or did not buy the proper companion wrench. Even a strap wrench should work by not trying to simply compress opposite sides of the housing with teeth as your metal wrench did - apparently cracking it.

That's a point of use fiter not whole house. By the looks of your water you should have a full analysis taken of your water and then hire a trained professional to make sure your water is safe for your family and yourself.
