  • Air over media iron filters will work great for a while. Eventually they will become fouled with oxidized iron and will no longer work as well. In this video I will show you two modifications to make these iron and sulfur filters work better. More important, I will show you the one easy step that has kept our iron filters working for years.

    I have a recommendation that you may find useful and worthwhile. I recommend the channel Ray Builds Cool Stuff. He is off-grid in an arid climate. His episode check out this 19-year-old rainwater collection system video is a gold mine on water filtration and sterilization. He also has a lot of info on building solar battery backups. This is information that when looking back seems to be common sense but was hidden.

      How often do you have to completely take apart that Venturi and clean it out? That's an awesome idea, because I took apart my valve, and it was half full of rust deposits.. I think your Venturi setup would work fantastic for me, but I'm not crazy about having to clean it frequently , byI taking it apart very often.

      @@msp472 Not often, I think twice in seven years and it wasn’t plugged. It is a large size, the diameter inside is close to 1/2 inch. The brand name is Mazzei and is usually used as a liquid fertilizer injector, for drip irrigation.
      The jets inside the Fleck filter valves do get clogged more often. I have to take each Fleck valve apart once a year and soak in Iron Out. If the jets are plugged I will usually just replace, simple two small parts. Also I always replace the piston, seals, and spacers. I order spare parts at Softener Parts.com
      These filters are not plug and play. But if cleaned and maintained they work well. Also depends on how much iron is in your water.

    I am going to take a guess and say that the Filox is an improvement that you made to your tanks. It is described as a super-duty solid media that is 75 to 85 % manganese dioxide with an extreme life duration and performance level. I do not see it listed for sale in any listed air-over tanks that Aqua Science sells.

      @@martyvanord984 Yes. I started with Katalox Light. It works great. I was backwashing filters every day and the mechanical wear just broke down the Katalox in a couple years. The Filox is good, problem with it is it is heavy, need good water flow to wash it. For a house I think Katalox would be the best. Probably backwash every 4 or 5 days.

      @@martyvanord984From the well water goes to a cistern. Then the house has a water softener. The iron filters help a lot, they just require regular maintenance. There are other systems, like peroxide. The air filters have worked pretty good and air is free. 👍 Thanks for watching.

      When this well is just sending water to the two ranch houses, it works good. The iron filters help out the water softeners. It is just too much iron for the softeners.

      @@thewindmillgarden my research says that peroxide is the very best but as you say can get expensive. Those who sell peroxide systems say that air over will gum up and quit working. Looks like you have it under control by doing a solution clean and soak.

    • @thewindmillgarden
      @thewindmillgarden  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@martyvanord984 That is true. Air over is not maintenance free. Takes more time and energy to run them. I think that the deep clean with Iron Out is key. It’s a trade off. A peroxide system in a home might use $300.00 in peroxide a year. Lower maintenance. The Air over valves use free air but will have to be cleaned once per month. Also I have to take valves apart once a year and change injector, piston, seals and spacers. 💧👍

      I did reply to this but it is now blank. The well water is rusty with rust chunks. I have taken anything visible out with a triple set of 20-inch big blue 4.5-diameter pleated filters.50--5--1 micron. To my amazement, they lasted a year and a half before I changed them out. Clogging with rust flakes was a problem before. Even though the water is clear, it still creates rust stains. I am looking at adding a treatment stage after the big blue filters. Air over with side injection and peroxide treatment as well as heads that create a top air pocket are all being considered.

      Sounds like you are dealing with both oxidized iron and dissolved iron. Those chunks could clog air injectors, so thats good to get them out first. Have you considered spin down filters? An iron filter or peroxide system will get the dissolved iron. Have you done a water test. Aqua science and Im sure others do free water tests and will give you treatment options. 💧👍
