I do that with my spare key fob and it works perfectly! I test it from time to time. I also have a steering wheel lock that I use, and when I go on vacation, I remove a fuse or two as well. Oh, my ride is also a Manual transmission. 🙂
On a Toyota/Lexus key, you can put the key in low energy consumption mode by pressing a certain key combination. In that mode, the keyless entry is deactivated for that key and keeps the battery alive.
You are TOTALLY correct! I owned a 2018 Wrangler Sport and later a 2022 Jeep Gladiator Mojave……both with manual 6-speed transmission. Faraday wallets are also available online. These wallets make carrying your car’s fob convenient in large gatherings like holiday shopping crowds. Thieves are known to have captured fob signals from shoppers on hidden devices then going into the parking garage and using the devices to connect to cars.
@@paulwreck6810 Scotty covered that aspect of signal theft. I was highlighting an optional Faraday product when a person is away from home. My additional fobs are in a Faraday box per Scotty’s recommendation inside my safe.
When I shop for cars always looking for the bare bone base model if comes with manual transmition it is bonus. Hate sensors in cars, especially trucks.
I thought the only way to get a base model anymore was to special order it. A friend of mine bought an F150 a while back and didn’t want carpet in it. He wanted rubber instead. He had to special order it that way. Evidently never heard of WeatherTech😂
I like basic old tech. From the 90s. I specifically ordered my new 2023 vehicle with manual windows and locks. So i need the key to still unlock it. Thats a preventative.
My 1999 Camry Solera has a regular key. Both my neighbour's have had their cars stolen (one was air b'n'b rental) as did one across the road. All three were SUVs. A Mercedes, Lexus, and Honda.
Wrapping your key fob in aluminum foil also works. However, theives dont even need signals anymore. They can break in with just your vin numbers nowadays.
Mazda has a passive mode where the active transmitter is off. It stops this attack. Only downside is you have to push the key into the start button to start it.
To test the box take it into the vehicle. See if it will respond to it. If it does not respond it worked. Now while it is in that box make sure you don't lock it in. Modern vehicles will prevent you from locking it in but they can't do it if they can't detect it! You can also bring the box near the vehicle and see if the doors will lock and unlock. If they do it has failed the test.
Yes scotty, so hard to steal a pre keyless car, like all the ford's that you could literally pull the switch out of in 30 seconds and then push in the ignition switch with a screw driver 👏 👏
This guy knows his stuff. My honda crv 92,000 miles started taking 3 - 4 button pushes to start. The starter was bad, $1600 at honda to replace the starter…..
Scotty, they use a mobile and snap a pic of your VIN on your dash then come back later with a programmed key. They can clone your key hung on the keyring, but that's not as frequent. You can prevent it by covering part or all of the VIN while parked.
It's easy to turn the key fob off. Its easier to have a faraday bag but make sure you buy a good one. Bags are best for traveling but box sounds great for home.
I live in a house nobody would think there could possibly be anything valuable in it. I drive a car that's so dirty nobody would want to touch it. I have a wife....
A Faraday BAG is better than a Faraday box. A Faraday bag is smaller, than a Faraday box. Bags are flexible and not as rigid as a box. Bags can easily be carried on your person or in a purse. Remember, if you are shopping in a store or dining at a restaurant, your SMART KEY FOB can be easily detected and copy-coded by a bad guy who is standing or sitting within 50 feet of you. So, by the time you finish shopping or dining, your vehicle could already be gone. Beyond vehicle theft, bad guys, with the proper electronics, can use the digital key fobs in your pocket or purse as a "tracking" device to follow you home. Faraday bags can minimize or eliminate this risk. Car manufacturers need to offer an option to replace "push-button" start systems with a physical key. One last thing, if your vehicle uses proximity sensors to automatically UNLOCK one or more doors on your vehicle as you approach -- TURN OFF that feature, because it is a safety risk.
I owned a 56 Ford in high school ( $5.00 car) and we used binder twine to lock the doors together so we wouldn't fall out driving around my buddies' back fields. It worked. Nobody got killed or injured.
@halburd1 It was on an episode of CBC Marketplace many many years ago. This is a well known issue. Car manufacturers just aren't doing anything to prevent it.
An 1894 report about the horse manure problem in New York City said, “The 15 to 30 pounds of manure produced daily by each beast multiplied by the 150,000+ horses in New York city resulted in more than three million pounds of horse manure per day that somehow needed to be disposed of. That’s not to mention the daily 40,000 gallons of horse urine.” Give me a Mercedes turbo diesel any day!
Man it’s always something. You just can’t relax anymore because you always have to be on your toes. I’m all for technology but sometimes the simplest way of things is better.
Get one of those metal bars that go over the steering wheel. One made from a really sturdy type of metal. But in America the best anti theft is a manual transmission, most people don’t know how to drive those.
Some keyless cars have what is known as code hopping technology. Each time one of the fob buttons is pressed, it changes the code. The security system in my silver Mercedes Benz has this technology. It is an aftermarket system that I installed years ago. A few people have tried to unlock the car using fob scanner tools but they failed and were caught.
Golf Mill & Bridgeport, that sounds like that occurred here in Chicagoland area. Golf Mill is a northern suburb of Chicago and Bridgeport is a neighborhood by White Sux park Coincidentally, my first vehicle, I bought from Golf Mill Ford some decades back. I really WANT NO newer vehicle, if I can help it
Most keyless remote signals can be turned off. Check your owners manual or google it. If you can remember to turn it off, you don’t need a faraday storage product.
I hate it all, I often walk past my car and it inlocks but I don't know, then 1 hour later I come back and it"s still unlock...modern car technology is S H I I. I. I. I. TTTTTT. Love tou Scotty!
Not sure if your vehicle comes with an actual physical manual, my car being a 2007, but I am thinking that there may be a setting to change the situation you are describing. In my car, I changed the auto door lock feature when in park or when put in gear. I also disabled the steering wheel going up and seat going back everytime the car was shut off. It's actually good to learn, especially when it is toilet time. 🚽
Just get a 5th gen 4Runner & disable the transmitter on the remote every time you lock it. 1 press lock then hold lock and double press unlock. Light on remote will flash 2x 2 flashes(4). Push start, touch unlock will not work because your FOB is no longer transmitting therefore they cannot pick up the signal.
This is particularly prevalent around Toronto, where the cops told people to leave their fobs on the front porch at night to let thieves have the car without confrontation! What a sorry world we live in!
Will be adding a hidden switch for the fuel pump relay to be enabled. I already got wire and switches so should cost me about 30 minutes time. Money well spent!
I live in a apartment complex in San Antonio and sixty five cars were stolen last month using this method, why didn't the auto makers consider that these key fobs would lead to more auto thefts this is completely unacceptable for auto makers to develop new technologies and not consider the fact that it is going to lead to more auto thefts this is very irresponsible behavior and leaves the customer with higher insurance bills because every time an insurance company must total out an automobile it increases our rates as a customer this is a total injustice to the customer 😮😮😮❤❤😮😮😮❤❤❤😮
Aaaa. Their #1 job is to sell cars. Are you grasping this concept? My new 2023 Toyota has Claymores attached to the doors. Ain't nobody stealing my vehicle? It is Vietnam all over again ... or PTSD
Customers always want "convenience," and I guess opening a car door with a physical key, and starting the car with a physical key, was just too much 'work' for the average consumer.
This raises a very interesting. Question…why don’t the insurance companies pressure the removal of these key fobs? In 1980 GM came out with the Citation and all the other compact fwd cars, partly because “ they were cheaper to fix after a crash”…if insurance companies could leverage the near extinction of rear wheel drive vehicles, why can’t they do this…get rid of the fobs…BTW, my neighbors Hemi Durango “ left” his driveway this morning at 4 AM…without him in it.
I live in SA as well. Yes unfortunately vehicle theft has risen significantly over the last few years there. I’m a firm believer a vehicle with three pedals is the best anti theft solution yet
Not true, an EV charged only on solar crossed the county in only a couple months. Using DC fast chargers you can make the trip in a few days. How fast you're driving makes more difference than the charging time.
Hey Scott love the videos, in my Toyota tacoma if you hold the lock button down and press unlock twice it shuts off the fob signal until you push any button on the fob
while over in Canada...Toronto Police Service offered tips to make it easier for thieves to access car keys and fobs by leaving them near the front door.
On some cars, you can disable the keyless access and have to use the buttons on the key to lock/unlock it. But it seems that some thieves begin to intercept the signal in this instance too. 😅
Just happened in the gated community. Popped out the button after gaining the garage door open by gaining signal. Found by Ford. Pass and car was cleaned and ready to be resold. 😮
Scotty i am a 20 year old man who identifies as a ferrari la ferrari with 40 years of mechanics experience and 69 years of electrical experience, where do you recommend i get my light bulb oil changed, ikea or walmart Many thanks LA Ferrari Junior
Keyless start is just another thing nobody really asked that was just pushed on to us as if it's so much more conveinient to press a button instead of turning a key. The truth is a button is cheaper than a keyed ignition barrel so thats another few cents saved in the production cost.
I've seen where you can push certain buttons on some Toyota's that will put your fob into a sleep mode, wonder if that will keep them from getting your signal
I'm old school.. my 06 envoy only has the driver door key lock. I had to remove door panel to hook up the mechanical arm ( that fell off) that unlocks the doors... The fob has new battery but hardly works. I'm lucky it worked a few weeks ago when I was stuck in a parking garage. I want another older dodge pickup truck. Or van.
I still have and use "The Club". My wife makes fun of me, but I always use it when we are in a lot like a movie theater or concert, where we are in for a specified period of time. It only takes a minute to lock it up, and they're not getting my Lincoln.
If you're by a movie theatre they will break into your Lincoln pull your 'papers' showing your home address from the glove box. Now they have 2 hours to go work your house over with no worries. And yes, unless your Ring system and internet is on battery backup, they start by pulling your electric meter.
@@jeffferguson4632 why leave anything in glove box with your address on it....I have never left my insurance card or regestration in glove box, it's in my wallet.
Igla anti theft system...steering wheel locks are not hard to beat; they bring a battery-powered grinder and cut the steering wheel, and the said lock gets kicked off.
The electronic security is full of security holes, the cell phones can actually store the electronic key !! If you use Bluetooth then they have access to all the data. Screen mirroring, screen share, scanner software to clone the fob

Lol, we never get high end stuff towed in to our shop after a theft or attempted theft. They're always the 14 Sentras of the world.
I live in a house nobody would think there could possibly be anything valuable in it.
I drive a car that's so dirty nobody would want to touch it.
I have a wife....
I know how you feel, mine is a 2015 sentra.
Knowing Scotty, he would only own Japanese horses.
😂😂😂😂😂
Like Nissan with turbo CVT.
Thank you so much Scott for the info. I’m about to order a box right now as we speak thanks a lot. My car to a expense it to be stolen.
I own a Nissan Versa.
I don’t have a key fob or even power locks.
… but no one has stolen my car 🙂.
And that’s why I own it! Jadco is king! 43 mpg
I owned a 56 Ford in high school ( $5.00 car) and we used binder twine to lock the doors together so we wouldn't fall out driving around my buddies' back fields.
It worked. Nobody got killed or injured.
You place your keyfobs in FARADAY cases at night so they dont transmit your fob prescense and unlock code to the car.
You can put it in a POT with a LID...
This is OOOOOLD news
SOURCES!
The manure is why the buildings are called brown stones to this day
@@gGnomeo it's not because the bricks are brown?
@@mr.giggles4995 they are brown from the manure
@@mr.giggles4995 I watch way too much history channel lol manure turned them brown
Man it’s always something. You just can’t relax anymore because you always have to be on your toes. I’m all for technology but sometimes the simplest way of things is better.
My keys are in an ammo box. Works great
Get one of those metal bars that go over the steering wheel. One made from a really sturdy type of metal. But in America the best anti theft is a manual transmission, most people don’t know how to drive those.
A piece of a aluminum foil or a aluminum bag from taco bell well work as well.
But then what will I put on my head?
Some keyless cars have what is known as code hopping technology. Each time one of the fob buttons is pressed, it changes the code. The security system in my silver Mercedes Benz has this technology. It is an aftermarket system that I installed years ago. A few people have tried to unlock the car using fob scanner tools but they failed and were caught.
The biggest deterrent to theft is a standard shift transmission and manual clutch.
On My 2021 Taco I can disable my fob. There are TH-cam vids on how to. Also in the manual under Key Battery saver.
Golf Mill & Bridgeport, that sounds like that occurred here in Chicagoland area. Golf Mill is a northern suburb of Chicago and Bridgeport is a neighborhood by White Sux park
Coincidentally, my first vehicle, I bought from Golf Mill Ford some decades back. I really WANT NO newer vehicle, if I can help it
I turn off my Toyota key fob every day before dinner and put it in a Faraday box.
Why is it called a "Faraday box"? Is that the name of the inventor? 🤔
@@maceharris7656 yes
We need a updated version of "5 Used Cars You Should Buy" please Scotty 😀
Most keyless remote signals can be turned off. Check your owners manual or google it. If you can remember to turn it off, you don’t need a faraday storage product.
"How do you like my new lawn ornament?"
"You mean the Jeep?"
"Yeah"
Thank you for the information about the Faraday box. I had no idea.
Faraday boxes are just thin metal that intercepts wireless signals. They can in some instances be more effective than lead.
as someone who likes water sports, the key fob is a terrible design. No where to put the key while you swim, kayak, surf
...and what's inside your key fob???
Why a real key of course...come on Detroit🤦♀️
I mourned when Chrysler bought jeep and or "AMC" what a bummer. I knew it was coming.
@@jbman413 it was indeed a horrible day. I believe it was March of 1987. Should be a day of mourning
I hate it all, I often walk past my car and it inlocks but I don't know, then 1 hour later I come back and it"s still unlock...modern car technology is S H I I. I. I. I. TTTTTT.
Love tou Scotty!
Yooo is this a Nissan?
I bought a brand new Maverick in 2022. In choosing options I gave a hearty NO THANKS to the keyless start.
This is particularly prevalent around Toronto, where the cops told people to leave their fobs on the front porch at night to let thieves have the car without confrontation! What a sorry world we live in!
You're kidding, right?
@@alansach8437
its true,i live in Toronto, cops are all migrants now
Yeah, that's not a thing that happened...
I wish I still had my '73 Ford Maverick,

@@patwyliee8068 Your absolutely right !
Hi great Scott Always interesting your opinions.!!
"he spent a year going 7200 miles across the country on a horse" - Hey, it's faster than someone in an EV could do it.
Just make sure it's a Japanese bred horse. xD
Had pony as a kid. In 1968 parents bought a new Honda Mini Trail; 3 speed and kick start. I like turning a key much more than chasing a pony down.
Not true, an EV charged only on solar crossed the county in only a couple months. Using DC fast chargers you can make the trip in a few days. How fast you're driving makes more difference than the charging time.
Yeah, I rented a 2024 Jeep Wrangler. It was so nice getting back to my 2003 Chevy Express...
Turn off your fob. Hold lock button down and press unlock twice. Toyota, Subaru, and others work like this.
Just put it in a rfid blocker when you get in the house. It's not a box, it's more like fabric and like 10$
It won't matter, you have to LEAVE the house with it.
I'm guessing there are many kinds of devices that come in different containers
What about installing a "kill switch" (to stop people from taking your car).
They had them back in the day. They were called keys! lol.
I have gotten very good at installing kill switches
Years ago when I was a kid in the 1970s, I dreamed of riding cross country.
Now a covered Wagon would be better. LoL
On some cars, you can disable the keyless access and have to use the buttons on the key to lock/unlock it. But it seems that some thieves begin to intercept the signal in this instance too. 😅
Read your cars manual. Most car remotes are turned off. Honda calls it super lock. Other cars can disabled keyless enter
Good stuff!
A Jeep compass is a piece of crap. As is the rest of the Jeep line
Just happened in the gated community. Popped out the button after gaining the garage door open by gaining signal. Found by Ford. Pass and car was cleaned and ready to be resold. 😮
Scotty i am a 20 year old man who identifies as a ferrari la ferrari with 40 years of mechanics experience and 69 years of electrical experience, where do you recommend i get my light bulb oil changed, ikea or walmart

Keyless start is just another thing nobody really asked that was just pushed on to us as if it's so much more conveinient to press a button instead of turning a key. The truth is a button is cheaper than a keyed ignition barrel so thats another few cents saved in the production cost.
A bee hive strapped into the passenger seat is a useful anti theft device.
Auto lock for the brake pedal, plus steering wheel lock turns a 90 second job into 7+ minutes… they will usually move to an easier target..
I've seen where you can push certain buttons on some Toyota's that will put your fob into a sleep mode, wonder if that will keep them from getting your signal
Comeback of the Club
The Club is coming back 😂
Yes Scotty said, get a manual car if you can find. They last forever and cost very little to maintain.
Thanks for the info 😊
I leave my fob in a metal container so they can't get at the signal (not that it would happen in my area, but you never know).
Thats why I like old cars like a 95 Chevy
Always thought that was a terrible idea to use the signal. I keep my plastic in a blocker pouch. Dont leave those bloody chip cards vulnerable too
The Weiner mobile is 1 of 6?
You'd think they'd come in packs of 8...
Lol, as kids we had a "machine" that would flip through the garage opener singals, lol. Used to piss people off all over town...
I always use my steering wheel lock.
I believe that Scotty made a video regarding theft prevention on these videos is to lock these vehicles using the power door locks instead of the fob?
Got 2019 Civic Manual Transmission & got actual key
I'm old school.. my 06 envoy only has the driver door key lock. I had to remove door panel to hook up the mechanical arm ( that fell off) that unlocks the doors... The fob has new battery but hardly works. I'm lucky it worked a few weeks ago when I was stuck in a parking garage.
I want another older dodge pickup truck. Or van.
I'm electrician, I put a simple on/off switch on my Key Fob's internal battery.
🤞Wish Scotty would cover - make a list of cars that don’t have a push button start!!
Scotty , you don't cut the club, you cut the steering wheel it's easier.
3/8" aluminum...
HONDA,TOYOTA,NISSAN...people will laugh, but a plymouth, is a great running one...heck with all the new gadgets...
You know, that Weinermobile was just trying to ketchup.
Welp.....I got a 2018 keyless start dodge.
It comes with a key in the fob for the door if needed, but its push to start.
Lovely news.
Use an AUTOLOCK brake lock comes with a steering wheel warning cover.
Igla anti theft system...steering wheel locks are not hard to beat; they bring a battery-powered grinder and cut the steering wheel, and the said lock gets kicked off.
You can wrap your key fob in aluminum foil if you don't have that special box until you get one.
The electronic security is full of security holes, the cell phones can actually store the electronic key !! If you use Bluetooth then they have access to all the data.
Screen mirroring, screen share, scanner software to clone the fob
