    The Museum of Moving Image held a special screening of Beau Is Afraid and welcomed back Ari Aster to not only intro the film but to also sit down with the audience and participate with a Q&A after. I was lucky enough to be in attendance and now present to you this special evening!
    Ari Aster Q&A session hosted by Michael Koresky.
    Aster follows up his brilliant and immensely popular horror duet of Hereditary and Midsommar with perhaps his most fully realized vision yet: a gonzo dark comedy that gets uncomfortably close to a man who’s falling into a million pieces as he desperately tries to get back home. A wild, tongue-in-cheek odyssey about a modern-day Job named Beau (a remarkable Joaquin Phoenix), beset by terrors real and imagined, who escapes a cartoonish, satirically degenerate cityscape only to wind his way through a series of false paradises, Beau Is Afraid evokes the pitch-black, how-bad-can-it-get humor of After Hours and A Serious Man, but with its own, singular gonzo aesthetic and a pitiless self-reflexivity that pushes it into daring territory. The marvelous supporting cast includes Nathan Lane, Amy Ryan, Patti LuPone, Denis Ménochet, Stephen McKinley Henderson, and a jaw-dropping Parker Posey.

    I really hope that this film will get a rerelease in theaters in a few more years, once more people catch up to it or come around to what Ari was doing here. So much of that final sensation of devastation and spectacular awe in the last shot is about reflecting the audience in their seats, kind of daring each individual audience member to get up out of their seat and leave the room.

      Art lingers like the scent of perfume, connecting the future with the past, giving it unique power. Planting seeds that grow and become enlightenment. It unfolds slowly, revealing itself only after it’s had time to settle in our subconscious. People lack the intellect for great art and require hand holding like toddlers.

    Second time watching the thing I noticed was a mother and kid and the mother pulling the child, and in the forefront a speedboat in water gets turned upside and starts tweaking. Foreshadowing the ending, what a magnificent film.

    One of my favorite filmmakers is Paul Thomas Anderson and what I love specifically about his work is that none of his characters change. For some that can be a bad thing but to me, that’s closer to life.
    With Ari Aster, his films read the same with a McCarthy type philosophy that our fates were determined long before we were here. You get these complex characters as openly broken and objective to their suffering as it gets while also destroying them in the end. Each of his 3 films end with the real protagonist coming to terms in one way or another with the reality of their life. His films really speak to me.

    • @LowkeyGeek
      @LowkeyGeek  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's a really great way to explain his films and I personally think that's why I resonate really well with Ari's films.

    Re: 14:50 ... I just rewatched the scene and deliberately searched for that guy (heavy dude with a mustache). I don't know what his presence or the fact that he's staring at Beau in each of those shots could mean, but I can tell you that it just made the entire sequence absolutely terrifying.

      I did the same thing after hearing Ari talk about it. It's really funny and I just love how he will do something like this mainly to just have fun with the audience. I know when I do some videos, I like putting things in the background just because it makes me laugh. LOL

    Film makers of his caliber aren’t operating within the bounds linear storytelling. The film is about how it makes you feel. It’s exaggerated to evoke feelings. It’s an experience. The story is how you react to it.

    I think that's what frustrates casual viewers the most: Beau doesn't change throught the movie while your typical moviegoer expects Hero's Journey. Also said moviegoers are not familiar with Greek's tragedy.

    Ari is still one of the Cinema Directors able to surprise you.. Greatly surprise you. I 'm following his filmography since I saw "Hereditary" and this morning I saw " Beau is afraid" which I believe it's a Masterpiece.
