      @@ToolsandTargets Seriously I agree. My 'min' is an M85 cause sometime pocket is necessary. I just don't know if I want to invest that much into 380, since all I really have are 9/38/357sig (and mag) and 45 really. 380 was always the hardest for me to find too. But that S&W + HST is a nice combo. Does the S&W fit better in pocket than an M85? I find the butt of the revolvers of J size tend to want to sneak out the top of the pocket lol.

      Also surprised as 380 HST's haven't tested this well previously but some of the HST rounds seem like they have been changed somewhat when the sealant color on the primers were changed to blue along with an updated box design also noticed a headstamp change on the 9mm when the sealant color and box changed. Perhaps some rolling updates that aren't being advertized ?

    Thans for testing this in the 2.0 bodyguard, it's my new pocket carry. Glad to see that 380 development has given us some really good options. HST is expensive, but it seems like in most cases it proves to be consistently worth it. Punch seems to be hit or miss in some calibers and barrel lengths, so while it's a good budget option, I always pay for the HST as carry ammo.

      That's interesting. I can't say that I recall any hit or miss with the Federal punch. I believe it uses a harder lead so it generally penetrates deeper while not opening to the degree of the HST but what I've seen, the Punch works GREAT in 9mm., .40, and .45acp. Now the .38+P Punch? I have seen that choke. But the others? Not so much at all.

    I bought a Bodyguard 2.0 and fired over 500 rounds through it, including: HST, Hornady XTP, Hornady CD, Gold Dot, Sig V-Crown, Underwood Extreme Defender +P and Penetrator. Of the 500 + rounds through it, the only malfunctions were with the HST. No ball has been fired through it yet. The malfunctions are 100% ammo related. The two malfunctions were failure to go into battery. I buy all of my ammo by the case, and I've already fired 500 of these HST out of G42s before testing it in the Bodyguard. There is no problem with the ammo. I removed the barrel from the Bodyguard and a G42, and I found that the size of the nose of the HST causes it to fit snugly in the Bodyguard's chamber, to the point when I press in the rear of the case, the rounds are snug and won't fall out when the barrel is inverted. This did not happen with any other ammo I tested. In the G42 chamber, there is slight play and the rounds fall free when the barrel is inverted. I actually have several G42 and tested this in three of them, and there were no sizing issues. For carry, I have switched to the 68gr Extreme Defender +P, and I have full confidence in the Bodyguard 2.0 with that ammo.

    From a less than 3" barrel, that's great performance. Considering the quality of steel available today, the, in many pistols, more robust designs, SAAMI should do some testing and show some +P .380 numbers.

    Good test, great performance from the 380. Thank you for taking the time. Because many carry 380, having you testing these projectiles for all is a real benefit to the rest of us.
    It may require more than one application of said projectile to dissuade a miscreant with ill intent, but that's why 10 round pocket tools exist.

  • @boileruphammerdown5455
    @boileruphammerdown5455 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Tools, great content as always. Both of these Federal's peformed very well out of the short barrel Bodyguard 2.0. You've tested the SIG V-Crowns in the past, but I think it was just gel, no clothing barrier.
    It's laughable some of the comments that infer the .380 is an anemic round as if its closer to a .22lr than to a 9mm. As for a summer pocket carry firearm when your wearing shorts and a tee shirt, .380 is king unless you wear clown pants and want to haul around at least 60% more weight. When the temperature drops and IWB carry is the norm, then ditch the .380 for whatever caliber you prefer, but .380 is very popular for a reason.

    • @acid6urns
      @acid6urns 26 วันที่ผ่านมา

      380 IS closer to 22lr than 9mm. 150 ft lbs is closer to 65-75 ft lbs than it is to 350-420 ft lbs bud. 380 isn’t necessarily anemic but it’s not even close to 9mm in terms of performance.

    Amazing 380 results. Perfect caliber for Florida summers.

  • @Paelorian
    @Paelorian 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    Punch was the winner. Three-quarters the energy and recoil, but it penetrated further, expanded comparably, and unlike the HST had full expansion all around, which suggests more reliability in expansion. Expansion like that HST suggests that at these velocities some will expand more or less, sometimes it might expand poorly or not at all. And then Punch is cheaper than HST, right? I'd say we have a winner here with Punch.
    This might be the best expanding .380 ACP round I've seen tested, and the deepest penetrating one that actually opened up (deeper than any XTP I recall) but I'm not convinced its better than non-expanding rounds (Xtreme Defender, etc.) Maybe it is! When I carry .380, I'll have to make a choice of what bullet technology to rely on.
    Thanks for testing and posting the video!

    Another excellent video! Personally, other than .22LR, I've been steering clear of Punch if HST is also available. Both are absolutely excellent and if choosing either, you've made a great choice. It's just the HST always seems to have the edge between the two.
