  • In today’s video, I share how we combine two cultures at Christmas. Thomas is from Germany and I am from Scotland and there are elements of Christmas traditions from both our families that we wanted to pass onto Ben, as well as traditions that we have created for our little family. We wanted to share the difficulties of combining the cultures and also the joy of having so many lovely Christmas traditions to choose from.
We talk about each of the topics at the time below.

Do you also have two or more cultures in your family? How do you deal with traditions at Christmas or for other celebrations? I'd love to hear how it works for you. ❤️

I just found your channel through the potty training video and now I am binge watching hahah
We are a mixed couple too (Spanish / German) and just moved from Madrid to Bavaria. We have Nikolaus bringing nuts and tangerines and a bit of chocolate on the 6th of December, on 24th comes the Christkindl with some big presents, on the 25th of December Papa Noel brings some more of the big ones and on 6th of January Los Reyes Magos bring some new clothes 🤦🏻‍♀️😅 he is going to be one spoilt brat. We mix all of our traditions but around Christmas it is mainly German traditions hehe

Haha. Falling down the TH-cam rabbit hole happens to me often. 😂 Aww, I love your mix of traditions and I would say very lucky, not spoiled. Haha! It sounds wonderfully multicultural! Thomas comes from Bavaria and I actually met him in Spain (he was doing an Erasmus year and I was an auxiliar de inglés). I love how Europe has so many beautiful transitions around festivals! It makes the world such an interesting place! ❤️

Plätzchen backen with In der Weihnachtsbäckerei on repeat. We’re Irish-German living in the Netherlands and haven’t figured the combination of the traditions out just yet. We’re currently in our bonus year, meaning our little one is ten months and won’t really remember this very odd year. Would have loved to celebrate with family (especially because they were only able to see LO once), but at least we have us 🎄

It's such a strange year and I am sorry your family plans aren't possible. We are just trying to make the best of the fact that Ben will be delighted, no matter what happens and I am sure your little one will be too. It has taken us two years to figure out what we're doing too as this is the first year Ben really understands. Sending Christmas love and enjoy your Plätzchen! Frohe Weihnachten! ❤️

This is an awesome topic for a video! That's fun that you're going to have both Christkind and Santa. I love how intentionally you guys are approaching the combining of cultures. I have to admit...we have not really incorporated much of Angel's Mexican traditions...tamales for the big meal, and midnight Mass, and staying up late to open presents after midnight Mass are a big part of what his family does, but we have really only had that when we're actually with his family for Christmas, and we've never been with them for Christmas since the boys were born. I'm like you, Kara, I love crafts and will always do Christmas crafts, that's automatic. haha!

It's definitely something I didn't even consider before having Ben, that we'd have two cultures as well as two languages. 😂 I think so many things would be different for us too if we were living in another country and I can imagine Christmas in Malaysia is very different! Christmas crafts are my favourite thing about Christmas. 😁 Merry Christmas Rachel!
