You may not believe this, but you have no idea what you have just described!! I mean that in a positive way, because I've been playing trumpet for 56 years, and the hiss that you describe, is EXACTLY how we position our tongue to play in the extreme upper register… A.k.a. really high notes!! It's the same way....to play higher you push your tongue up against your roof your mouth harder so you have to blow harder to get those notes, and it produces a venturi effect, thereby causing the air steam to travel at a much faster speed!! Isn't that something!!!
I got decent at turkey alling as a teen. I just got your green call for my first elk season. Boy oh boy there is not as much overlap as I'd hoped. It took about half of a 4 hour drive to stop sounding like a mammalian chicken, then another hour to not sound like a 500 pound bird.

Hey just a heads up, for those of you that can pick up a diaphragm call and use it with no instructions, you should try your hand at playing the blues harmonica.

So... I've used these before. However it had been a while. So this video was a good refresher. In addition. I have recently had to have a large number of my teeth removed due to a long career in fire and rescue resulting in issues with my teeth. So I have learned that not having teeth makes using these allot harder. So diaphragm selection is much more critical. Several of the ones I had previously used easily were no longer usable. They were just too big. I have had to resort to smaller diaphragms. I still have trouble making cow calls. But that is fine.
I was able to call for elk without a diaphragm, the guy that I was with was calling for elk one night and asked if some of us wanted to try so we did, (at the time, my friends and I that wanted to try knew nothing about bugling) so the guy handed us this tube looking thing but didn’t tell us there was a diaphragm so we were just sounding like a bunch of morons in the process. After I saw my friend try over and over, I decided to try one more time... so I took a deep breath and made my voice really high and it actually worked, but what was the most interesting part to me tho is once I hit the “frequency” my voice kinda just locked in that tune, it was probably one of my favorite experiences while camping!
Thank you ever so very much ,corey is truly a wonderful person ,to show how to work a diaphram call ,Corey is a awesome teacher ,and good luck to everyone, thank you so very very much corey, Curtis Slattum thank you
Thank you so much for doing this video!!! Many people have calling videos, but they don’t talk about how to actually use the diaphragm. I have never been able to make a diaphragm call work and I’ve tried and tried, first time after watching this video, bam, it worked. Now I just need to perfect it. Thank you again!
I watched this because I wanted to hunt elk one day. They're marvelous animals with a big meat yield. However, what I wasn't ready for was the inhale where I swallowed the piece in my mouth. Got another one, great video, very informative
Just thought I’d write a post for you Corey, I thought this video would be the one because I started here, today I called in a very large 6x6 bull elk from private land onto a very overhunted piece of crown land and he had a couple cows already too, your methods on all your videos are unreal, absolute gold mine for elk hunters, would love to come and do a hunt with you one day, cheers from Manitoba
this is the vid that has really gotten it to click for me. i still can't really hit the pitch for cow calls or bugles but this vid finally got me on the right track.
Watched your videos for a week. Bought my diaphragm about an hour ago and the fiancé is flipping his mind how I’ve already been able to get a cow call down.
I wish I would have had this a couple months ago. What a great teaching video. Corey, thanks so much. Going out for my first Elk trip in October. Trying to at least get the basics down. Lance
Really a great video. I have watched a few now to try and learn to use my diaphragm call and before this video i was just spitting lol. After this video, wow. It WORKS! Great instructions Thanks!
Im here after having the diaphragm backwards in the mouth and it obviously not working….now it sounds great, gotta say years of goose calling definitely helps!
Another great video Cory, I've tried this for many years, but ever since I had to get an upper denture I've struggled with consistency because of the way it sits against it. I've tried an endless variety of different calls with very little luck. I've even tried modifying them to fit better against the flat hard palate. I'm not giving up, and I will figure it out eventually. Thanks again, always enjoy your videos.
I had the same problem, but last year I finally figured it out . Stick with it once you get it, you will have no problems duplicating it n then you just start getting better and better!
I live across the street from an elk farm. I bought an elk call and used it for the first time tonight after watching this video. I sounded terrible, but the elk were responding very vocally and frequently. I would call and 6-7 bulls would respond. I waited for everything to die off and then repeated my call and all of the bulls called back. Not too bad for only watching this video and having no other experience.
Just picked these up threw them in my mouth took me 30 minutes of driving home and making my son and gf laugh at me until i finally got some great results 😂 these reeds rock primos seem to skinny for the roof of my mouth
Advice please!! I think I trimmed my bull call just a teeny bit too much so I stop gagging while using it, but I worry if I'm not getting enough seal. Any way to fix this or do I need a new one? At least I'm getting good at the single reed cow call and can even bugle with it. 😅
So quick question for anybody who sees this. How does one get started hunting. And I’m talking hunting basically anything. I’m 24 and I have never hunted in my life. I fish a lot but have never hunted. A life goal I have is to hunt an elk and a turkey. Let’s say I have no friends or anybody I know that hunts. How would I plan my first hunt? Thank you guys
They have guided hunts all over the place. Kind of expensive but a guide will take you out and help you find the animals and walk you through it. You'll be hunting on private land a lot of the time too. Or, start hunting really small game like quail until you feel ready. I always eat anything I kill, I never do it "just to kill"
Does your team go to different shows to help in picking a call? Just try and try with mouth calls and can’t get it down. Recently purchased the Select A call from you and been trying that. Not sure I’m any better but I’m at least getting more tones. Thanks, Troy
I have a question is an elk diaphragm call the same thing as a turkey diaphragm call? I've used turkey calls and I am just getting into elk thanks in advance!
How do you deal with a very wet mouth and calls? My dentist even has me written down as having a small and wet mouth, so when I have a call in my mouth I end up spitting and dripping constantly. I am considering cutting down the call to hopefully better fit, but with the constant saliva I can't get a single blip from it.
Seems like I am struggling lately with the Contender diaphragm. But it’s been really hot. I usually have my calls in the pickup. Out of the sun but in the pickup. Also, with the heat I usually have dry mouth. Could this partnered with dry mouth be why my bugles seem so raspy lately?
I think what I have determined is that it is not the latex but the tape. When I have been bringing the reeds back inside and put them in the fridge. As soon as the stiffened up the tape worked and sealed fine. Latex still seems good so far. The tape just got to soft and wouldn’t seal. Hope if someone else is having this same issue can find this helpful. Heats bad. But if you want to practice make sure you taking turns with calls! Take them back inside and grab a fresh one every day or so
My problem seems to be twofold: I clearly drool too much and as much as someone can explain it, unless you yourself can actually FEEL what proper mouth placement is, you just ain't gonna get it. Good thing I'm practicing months in advance...
No, dont cut the reed but you can trim the outer diameter. The orange part of the call he has. Trim tiny pieces off until you get the proper seal. You can always trim more but cant put it back.
Keep trying! One day you will get that sound you're looking for. Most people can't use these because they give up where you are. Take it work, in the car and around the house. Drive your neighbors crazy.
