I’ve bulged in every elk I’ve shot . Last year was number 13. I found the key is learning to hear what that bull is saying . If he’s got cows coming into estrus or in estrus he’s going to answer very aggressive as he has something to defend . This is the bull to challenge . If no cows in heat , he will still talk to you but won’t come to you unless you convince him that you have a cow in heat or , sit and cow call every hour . Once his cows bed he might come check you out.. nothing better than taking a calm bull and turning him into a savage
You are a master . I was calling bulls before there was any kind of calls to buy . I used grass calf cow calls . I’m 55 years old still have calling to go
Thanks for the great video and tips. Bought a call like that earlier this year and have been practicing. I found the grunts and chuckles are a lot easier and sound great. I had been using bugles with the latex strip over the mouthpiece. We’re heading to NW Colorado August 31st and opening day is September 2nd. This will be my 19th archery elk hunt. Really excited.
Great video Dirk does a great job breaking it down and keeping it simple and practical. Thanks Dirk, rally enjoyed this series of videos you did with the Go Hunt guys.
Dirk is an amazing caller and the way he gets it done works for sure. But I'm gonna listen to Paul Madel and what he teaches. I've taken my bulls by his teaching and sharing his experience.
Great video, but I feel like the audio is pretty low; I guess it makes sense cause the calling is louder than he is talking and don't need to blow out anyone's ear drums.
We definitely didn't want to blow out anyone's eardrums during the calling. But we hear you on the audio being low. We will working on fixing that for our next videos.
Hi there, calling seems to be relatively ineffective in November. You could carry a cow call and or bugle to perhaps try as a locater call, but for the most part, calling a bull in is rare on those late season hunts. I've heard elk bugle in Nov, but I can't say I personally know anyone that calls bulls in that late in the season.
Hi there, it's likely that by that second rifle season that the bulls will have pulled away from the cows and calling will be relatively ineffective. You could carry a cow call or a bugle to try as a locator call. For a beginner I would recommend the Phelps EZ'Sukr or the Phelps EZEstrus cow calls. Both of those are external reed (bite and blow) type calls and very effective and easy to use. For a bugle, the Phelps metal bugle tube sounds great and you can use that with the external reed or a diaphragm call like the Phelps Maverick, or the several AMP calls. If you want to continue to hunt and call elk, I might suggest buying several diaphragm calls and practicing to find the one that works best for you. I really like the Phelps Maverick, Pitch Black Series, and the grey and orange calls. Hope that helps some, all the best and good luck!
When your hunting buddies are wasting time trudging through the forest that's over pressured throw out some "OO- EE's" to remind them what jackasses they are xD
You are all good but one thing about it you're not good at you're not on the right damn property go behind Katie's house and hunt this is not her property
I shot a cow elk this past weekend, went to same property yesterday and saw a big 5x5 bull just off the property I hunt on private land, doing my research to call that bull over to the crown property 🤞🏽
Just in time to annoy my wife for the next couple weeks until we go on our hunt!
Haha can confirm this is a very easy way to annoy the wife 🤣
🤣 I am sitting beside my wife right now watching this. I could see her look so I read her this comment 🤣
@@AbBowhunter 🤣
Got to practice! 😂
Dont forget about the dogs 🤣🤣🤣
Dirk nailed it! Instantly the best breakdown of not only the calls, but they ‘why’ of which call. Thanks for the Master Class🤛🏼
Glad it was helpful!
Maverick hands down the easiest most effective call I’ve used. Love the content. Gettin me amped. 2 WEEKS
Thanks for watching! Good luck this season!
Excellent lesson. Thanks Dirk! That kind of info only comes from time spent in the woods. Right on.

WOW great stuff from Dirk! but I got 4 words Paul "Elk Nut" medel! Best in the business on how, when, why and where to call Elk!
I can do the same sound with those plastic long straws.
Thanks for the tips; can you share which bugle tube is being used in the video? Is it the Phelps "Unleashed" or "Metal" Bugle Tube?
Hi Patrick! Here is the link to the tube: shop.gohunt.com/products/metal-bugle-tube?_pos=1&_sid=4d374231a&_ss=r
What calls would you bring and use during a early November hunt

Thanx
Thanks for watching!
thanks
What about calls for early archery? We open Aug 19th this year.
Elk aren't fighters they are lovers!! That's why the bull takes his cows and run....
I've heard elk bugle worse than me.
Crank it up to hear you talk then blow my eardrums when you call let’s get some professional auto boys. Great knowledge tho I appreciate ya.
Thanks for the feedback!
what is the best route for a beginner? which one should i purchase? going to colorado 2nd rifle. Thanks
