Welcome one welcome all to the first special sound tutorial on You Can beatbox. Today we'll be learning the siren sound. This sound was made popular by beatboxers like Faith SFX and Lytos and its a crazy sound. And here it is [demo].
To make this sound there is one simple technique to learn before you can do this sound and that is humming out of your nose and mouth at the same time. Its sounds easy and it can be but there's basically one way of testing yourself and practicing how to do it. Starting humming with your mouth closed and then open your mouth so that you get sound coming out of your mouth and nose. Then to make sure that you are getting sound out of both, switch off covering your nose and mouth. There really shouldn't be too big of a change in sound when you cover up either one. [Demo] Once you've gotten this technique down, you're done with part one of this sound. And just as a quick note, for this sound you're going to use your falsetto voice or the high voice just like in the drop it like its hot cover.
The next step takes time. To get the siren sound, you have to get a very precise position of your lips and this takes a lot of experimenting to figure out. But the positioning looks a little like this [show]. You basically just pucker your lips and leave them out. Or another way to think about it is you make a kiss and then leave your lips in the ending position like this [show]. The end result is that your top teeth should be touching the inside of your bottom lips.
The small vibration of your teeth against the inside of your lip creates the siren effect. You wont actually feel the vibrations because its so small, but just know that you have to have the teeth touching the lips to get the sound.
When you're trying to find this mouth positioning, you have to do it while humming. And like i said before, using your falsetto aka high voice gets you this sound so practice this sound using that high voice.
And to get that classic police siren sound, you make your voice go up and down.
To be honest, it took me more than a month to get the position correct but since i first made the sounds, i havent lost the positioning. Its a matter of trial and error but it does take time, and sometimes a lot of it.
We're not going to do any practice beats as of now, but i'll put up a practice beats video on sunday that might have a beat or two with the siren in it. And also check the description below for some other tutorials that explain this sound, as i know it can be very difficult at first.
