Drop it Like its Hot Original: • Snoop Dogg - Drop It L...
Welcome back to You Can Beatbox. By popular demand, today we're going to learn to hum and beatbox simultaneously and by unanimous vote in the comments in the last video, we'll learn the song Drop it Like its Hot.
Now on to humming and beatboxing. Humming while you beatbox takes advantage of the fact that your mouth has different parts. In the same way that a drummer uses his left hand, his right hand, his left foot and his right foot to make every possible sound combination, there's no reason a beatboxer cant as well, and that's what is behind humming and beatbox. You'll make the beat with your lips and use your throat and vocal cords to hum. Its essentially multitasking while you beatbox.
And just as a quick reminder, humming is just singing through your nose without letting air pass through your mouth.
I've found one good way to make sure that you dont use air from your lungs. Practice doing a simple beat B Pf B Pf while either keeping a steady hum or just practice doing this beat while breathing in or out. Essentially, you should be able to do this beat forever and just continue breathing in or out. Its a very strange concept but once you get used to it, its amazing.
However, if you are having trouble with this, you can just insert the humming that you want to do in between your sounds. For example, instead of multitasking [demo] you just put the humming in between like this [demo]. This will make it harder to do some covers, such as drop it like its hot, but in a lot of cases, it does the job quite well.
Now there's not much else but to go ahead and do a few practice beats.
1) B Pf B Pf (Phillip glass marching band song)
2) Seven Nation
You'll notice how your sounds lose a little bit or even a lot of the their punch b/c youre only building up pressure with your mouth and not with your lungs. This happens with every beatboxer so realize that this is normal and you just have to compensate a little by pushing a little harder.
And to the star of the show, we shall now learn drop it like its hot. I'll put a link for the song in the description below and here's what the beat is going to sound like [Demo].
To break it down, this beat has 3 components: The beat [demo], the clicks [demo] and the humming [demo]. In reality each component is simple, its just a matter of fitting the pieces of the puzzle together that adds the degree of awesomeness to the cover. And a quick recap of each component.
The Beat: B B Pf B B Pf. Make sure you get the timing of this down because its the backbone of the cover.
The clicks: its just 4 up and 4 down. And make sure that you change the pitch each way because it can make the difference between a mediocre cover and a great one. You change the pitch by adjusting your jaw and lip position to raise or lower it as you need.
The humming: all you have to do for this is whats called using your falsetto voice. Its also called a head voice but its your high voice. To see where it is, just start at your lowest voice and go up until you hear a slight (or large) jump in your voice. I'll do an exaggerated example [demo]. So now that we have the three components, we'll put them all together.
When i first taught myself this beat, I did it reaaaallly slowly to start out just to make sure the timing is right. Remember, if you can do something slowly and keep rhythm, chances are you cant do it fast and keep rhythm.
So just to recap the beat, here's how it goes [demo]. And now we'll do the clicks at the same time. And if you need to visualize it, pay attention to the standard beatbox notation that i'll put right here. So ill do it slow and then speed up. [demo slow, medium and fast].
And so once you've gotten that down, try adding in the humming over top of it. If your humming gets broken up because of the beat, that means that you have to adjust your sounds so that youre not using any lung power. Lemme know in a comment if you need me clarify any of this.
But once you've added in the humming, congratulations! You've just learned your first beatbox cover! As always, dont forget to subscribe to the channel for Tutorial Tuesdays and like this video down below. Dont forget to watch the special episode I put up about practicing beatboxing. Next week, we'll be learning our first inward sound, the inward snare, which will revolutionize how you look at beatboxing!
